With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we may be beginning to enjoy life again. However twelve months after the first lockdown we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of Covid 19 nationally if we don’t adhere to their regulations . Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past few months. This means shopping locally so that our local businness need not only survive but our local employment is secured. Many of us can recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them. In other words all of you our readership. With some experts predicting yet another phase if we are not careful, we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. The Balbriggan Roadrunners Summerfest 5km fun run Balbriggan Roadrunners will be hosting their annual Summerfest 5k from the 28th of May to the 4th of June, in a virtual fromat this year. This has always been a great fun event to look forward to.The Balbriggan Roadrunners Summerfest 5km fun run will be going virtual this year taking place between 28th May and 4th June 2021. Registration costs €10 and can be done online.

This will also be part of some great North Dublin virtual events that have been taking place since early Jan this year, when Raheny Shamrock AC kicked off their virtual 5 mile. Balbriggan Roadrunners will be helping North Dublin and the rest of the country to keep smiling and enjoying our running.The club is very mcuh about participation and including all runners, walkers and joggers to the enjoy their events. We hope you can be part of this great event and share your experience on the Balbriggan Roadrunners Balbriggan social media pages and the My Run Community page. Hospitality and tourism providers invited to apply for funding now Fingal County Council is encouraging local hospitality and tourism providers to apply for grant funding under Fáilte Ireland’s new Outdoor Dining Enhancement Investment Scheme aimed at assisting the sector increase their outdoor dining capacity.Grants of up to €4,000 are available under the Outdoor Dining Enhancement & Accessories for Tourism & Hospitality Business strand of the Scheme to facilitate greater capacity in outdoor dining by supporting hospitality businesses with upgrading and enhancing venues and public spaces and implementing weather-proofing solutions to facilitate year-round outdoor dining. Individual tourism and hospitality businesses where food is sold for consumption on the premises including hotels, attractions, cafes, restaurants and pubs are invited to apply for funding.Its aim is to expand on the work carried out by local authorities last year in supporting businesses and will support individual independent hospitality and tourism businesses towards the cost of equipment to provide additional outdoor enhancement and facilitate these businesses to increase their outdoor dining capacity for the summer of 2021.Costs for outdoor tables, chairs,umbrellas, electric heaters, screens, wind breaks, plant stands and wooden platforms will be covered under the Scheme. Expenditure must be incurred between April 1 2020 and September 30 2021.

Foróige supports our LGBTI+ young people In Foróige we know that for many young people in Ireland, being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex means for them that they are living with daily discrimination or with constant fear of being themselves. This has long lasting effects from the treatment in the education system such as namecalling and bullying or even being denied equal opportunities as their peers because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.In Foróige, we always want to make sure that all of our young people feel welcomed, accepted but most importantly safe! We offer dedicated places where our young people who are part of the LGBTI+ community can feel comfortable and protected to explore their journeys and the challenges the community often face. Our LGBTI+ Groups will return from the 26th of April for face to face group work OUTDOORS! In this space young people decide what actions and activities they’d like to do, whether it’s exploring terminology, having a casual chat or planning for pride, we listen to our young people. Our Senior LGBTI+ Group is open for young people aged 15-18. Because of the success with this group we are very happy to announce our Junior LGBTI+ Group for young people aged 12-14. We understand how important it is for young people to feel heard and seen and the importance of creating a space where they can share ideas and be creative whilst being themselves. Take a closer look at what you have

By Dave Kavanagh There are many aspects of life that people take for granted, especially if it’s something that is long running and gets paid by direct debit from your bank account. I regularly see clients that have had the same cover plans in place, without ever checking if they are still suitable for their current circumstances. Changes in employment, income, new additions to family, or moving home are just some of the things that could completely alter your requirements. You could even be paying for something that is no longer required or needed.

If a plan was taken out directly with a bank or insurance company (where it was not compared) you could be paying premiums way higher than necessary.

What kind of details should people be aware of?

For a start, just knowing the basics would be helpful. With things like life cover, mortgage protection or serious illness cover, what premiums are you paying? How much cover is in place?

When is the plan due to expire? Does it have a conversion option that would allow you to continue cover beyond the end of the plan if your health deteriorated? Is it “dual” or “joint” cover?

Grasshoppers early years arts festival

Grasshoppers Early Years Arts Festival was set up in 2019 as a partnership between Acting Up! founder Cliodhna Noonan and Our Balbriggan - Get Involved. We opened with a wonderful Buggy Parade to the Square where we had an outdoor Capoeira performance for families followed by tea and cakes at Aster Family Centre. The 2019 workshop weekend for families with children aged 0-6 was a sellout success! We were determined to do more in 2020. Unfortunately, Covid had other plans.

However, we were back in force with a fully digital festival in February 2021 and what a week it was!!! We presented zoom workshop performances from Croatia, Lithuania, Greece and Romania commissioned specially for our audiences. The programme was sold out within days of being released! We would like to thank everyone who participated especially our Balbriggan audiences!!! As schools reopened a week after the workshops, we invited them to participate further in Grasshoppers 2021 and to create an exhibition of artwork based on the theme of the local Lighthouse. We would like to thank Millfield Shopping Centre for the great exhibition space they offered us for the youngest artists in Balbriggan! You may have seen the magnificent display of colour and positivity just outside Tescos over the Easter break!

We are moving into our final event for children and families aged 0-6.

Watch it Grow 2021! in collaboration with Tidy Towns Balbriggan, and Balbriggan Libraries, offers school and preschools a chance to grow seeds, water them, watch them and investigate what insects might visit them over the next four weeks. Schools are invited to plant in a public space near them, on their school grounds or even on the windowsills of their classrooms! We will be visiting all schools in the area in the coming two weeks to drop off our packs! Happy Growing! Balbriggan on a sunny day and Anne was asked if she needed help crossing the road. Anne was wearing dark sunglasses at the time and the person thought she was blind. We will all miss Yarrow, especially

Anne, and wish him ‘Good Luck’ in his training and future life as an Assistance Dog.Looking back to

the 1980s, Issue 10 of Guidelines, the newsletter, of then called ‘Irish Guide Dogs Association’, featured ‘The Beginning of the Balbriggan Branch’ by Tom O

’ Neill Chairman.Tom qualified with his first Guide Dog Frank, a black Labrador in 1985, and

returned to Balbriggan which at the time had a population of about 8,000.Tom found out that there were no branches of the association in the North Dublin area so he and his wife Breege formed the branch ‘if only to show the local people what a Guide Dog could do for a visually impaired person’.

In 1987 £3,500 was raised and the branch continues today with the help of our loyal supporters and volunteers.

Thanks to sponsorship received from Progressive Credit Union, Balbriggan and the H.S.E., along with money raised through a Monster Raffle and other fundraising ventures in 2019, we are thrilled to have been able to purchase our new vehicle.

Whilst the project was delayed considerably due to the constraints of Covid-19 over the past year, we are finally on the road. We would like to express our thanks to Progressive Credit Union in particular Brian Howard, the H.S.E. and all those who contributed in any way to raising funds for our minibus.

Balbriggan Meals on Wheels currently provides more than 80 meals per day, with meals delivered to the most vulnerable people in our community. We look forward to using our new bus to deliver meals to our clients as well as transporting our clients to and from our Dinner Club as soon as it is safe for us to resume this service. We are also announcing that our fundraising appeal has been launched. As everyone is aware, the present circumstances this year have once again meant that we have been unable to host any fundraising events. We are, therefore, at this time launching a fundraising appeal to assist us in continuing our work, cooking and delivering meals in the wider Balbriggan area. Donations may be made directly to our base in Hampton Street or through the donate button on our Facebook page.

Funerals during Covid are proving very stressful

By Siobhán O’Neill White So many of us have lost loved ones over the past year and grieving has been made even more difficult with lockdown and restrictions. In January we lost my beloved Nanny Tess. She was a fabulous woman and we were so sad to lose her. It was extremely difficult that only 10 people attend her funeral. Then, in March, we suddenly and unexpectedly lost my husband’s Mother. She was a very active woman and as she was only in her 70’s, the shock of her passing has been very traumatic to process. Our children are devastated. They have had days where they cried in school or couldn’t get to sleep because they were so upset. Again, the funeral was very restricted and caused us alot of pain and sadness. Not being able to have her siblings and son-in-law in for the service felt cruel and wrong. As so many of us are navigating bereavement, we asked parenting coach, Allen O’Donoghue, from Help Me to Parent, for some advice on dealing with bereavement as a family. He says:1) to take care of yourself and look at what is going on for you as a parent;2) try not to hide your own grief from your children,

seeing you be upset or know that you are upset, may give them “permission” to grieve themselves;3) try not to force them to talk or worry if they don’t show emotion, sometimes they need to just try and process things for themselves;4) just listen to them, if they come to you upset, let them experience their emotions and reassure them that it is absolutely okay to feel how they feel;5) if you have a child who generally doesn’t want to show emotion, let them know that it is okay to cry and be upset, but that they don’t have to do it in front of anyone;6) you could get a notebook to let them write how they were feeling if they need to;7) get professional support if they really need it.For more advice, contact Allen at: r 086-805840 for support.

Strolling on the beaches in Balbriggan after lockdown

Now, as lockdown eases, its time to get some good sea air into our lungs and where better than Balbriggan’s beach. Balbriggan beach is situated close to the Main Street, behind an eleven arch limestone and brick railway viaduct. There is a working fishing harbour beside the beach where trawlers enter and leave on high tides. The Front Strand is Balbriggan’s main beach. It is a natural inlet and is ideal for building sand castles, bathing and soaking up the sun if the temperamental Irish weather permits. During the summer months, a lifeguard is on duty when the appropriate flag is flying. A pleasant walk further up the coast takes you to the Martello Tower built in the 1800s to ward off any invasions by Napoleon.

Just below the Martello Tower are the ruins of the Boathouses. In by-gone days this area was well-known for hot seaweed bath.Balbriggan beach is an ideal walking spot.Rich with history and natural vistas. Beyond the Martello Tower, heading further north you will see the imposing structure of Bremore Castle on your left. The beach stretching north from the Martello Tower is called King’s Strand. Walking along to the north end of King’s Strand you can spot The Sailors Grave, a mound of stones so called as it commemorates the dead of the ships such as the Belle Hill and Sarah of Runcorn that were wrecked off the nearby Cardy Rocks. Tradition has it that visitors add a stone to the cairn. A

plaque was placed here in 2013 to commemorate the lost lives. You can walk along this stretch of coastline eventually arriving at the long beaches of Gormanston. (Note, this is a natural terrain without a man-made footpath). Hampton Cove Beach on the southern end of the town is a nice pebble beach popular with dog walkers.

From here there is a nice view of the Rockabill lighthouse and of Skerries. NEAT - An underestimated element of weight loss

By Ciaran Russell Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT, refers to unplanned physical activity which is the largest component of caloric expenditure that you can readily change. People are more sedentary than ever before and this contributes to an increase in chronic illness, all because we are spending more time staying still.

Many people working office, or now home office, jobs will likely be sitting down for the majority of their work day, which is followed by sitting down to watch the next must see TV series for the evening.Over time this compounds into a population of people that don’t move their body

as much as the can or should and can then lead to further health concerns later in life.Thankfully there’s some steps we can take to increase our levels of physical activity which not only benefits you when you want to lose some excess body fat but it will also positively contribute to better health. For example; things like walking to school with your kids or cycling to the shop instead of getting in your car. When you’re back in the office or shopping centres, opt to take the stairs over the lift. Even park your car as far away in the carpark as possible. These small actions will become habits over time and will have a really big impact on your levels of activity.For the office workers, set regular alarms to trigger you to take

a movement break, leave your bottle of water or your phone on the other side of the room so you have to get up to get them. Better still get yourself a standing desk if possible. The aim is to move as much as possible throughout your day. Some might find it helpful to set a daily step target. By setting a number of steps to be achieved every day you are giving yourself some more motivation to get moving. By putting more emphasis on your NEAT and increasing your levels of physical activity you are building better habits for the future more active you. Having a more active day will have a positive impact on your physical and mental health, your energy and your weight loss.

Niamh’s Grilled Chicken and Grape Salad May is officially the first month of the Summer season and hopefully we will have lots of nice sunny weather which ‘May’ entice us to eat more salads! This recipe is quick to throw together but has lots of variety with crunchy and juicy textures and flavours!!

Really handy and can help avoid food waste too, especially if you have left over cooked chicken or salad ingredients that need to be used!!!

Ingredients: (Serves 1 person) • • • • • •

1 chicken fillet 1 handful (approx. x10) grapes (green or red) 50g pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds 6 cherry tomatoes 200g spinach and other leaves (Fresh Basil leaves add a beautiful flavour of Summer!)

60g Feta cheese

Feel free to add any other ingredients of your liking such as red onion, scallion, peppers, diced beetroot, shredded carrot, cucumber, slices of apple, Goat’s cheese, couscous, walnuts or pecans.

Tip: For more flavour, toast the seeds by heating them on a dry pan over a medium heat for 1-2minutes until they turn golden brown and produce a rich, toasty fragrance. DON’T take your eye off them though as they burn quite easily and toss them around on the pan to ensure even toasting!

Optional Balsamic Honey Dressing (alternatively use a dressing of your liking) (Makes 4 servings. Store any leftover dressing in an air-tight container in the fridge and use within 3 weeks) • • • • •

3 tablespoonsBalsamic vinega 1 tablespoon honey 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 5 tablespoons olive oil Pinch of black pepper.

To make the dressing, place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth (approx. 30 seconds). Alternatively whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl until they are well combined.

(Although using a blender will result in a smoother consistency). Stir well before serving to ensure the ingredients are combined.

Method:

(1.)Grill the chicken fillet with spices or flavouring of your liking. I like Cajun spices or paprika.(2.) While keeping an eye on the grill, prepare the salad ingredients by washing and chopping/slicing. (3.) Place all of the salad ingredients into a large mixing bowl (spinach, sliced grapes, tomatoes, feta cheese and seeds).

When cooked thoroughly, slice the grilled chicken and add into this mixing bowl. Then add a dressing of your choice and toss all the ingredients around in the mixing bowl. Ensure the dressing coats all of the ingredients evenly.

(4.) Assemble the salad on your serving dish.
