With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new dawn for us all. However we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of Covid 19 nationally. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past few months. This means shopping locally so that our local businness need not only survive but our local employment is secured. Many of us can recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them. In other words all of you our readership. With some experts predicting a second phase we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Let us all stay safe, obey the regulations and enjoy the sunshine and remember please shop local!

Balbriggan Tidy Towns- new signs and oral history

Here we have some lovely new hand made signs for our gardens from Joe Griffin. Made from reclaimed timber and slate. We really appreciate the gifts (and your help planting our new holly tree). Also, We’d love to hear about people’s good memories of the Bracken or Matt river. Follow the links to upload your video. Some people’s stories will be very recent but it would be great to get some of the older folklore too. If you know someone who would like to talk about the river but may not have the technology let us know and we will try to facilitate them. Balbriggan Tidy Towns is very excited

to join with Fingal County Council and LAWPRO in establishing an oral history project on the Bracken river. Our volunteers have been working hard improving many aspects of the river recently so we think that a collection of stories and anecdotes about it is a great way to celebrate this important ecosystem which runs through our town. The Great Gatsby passes on to Doggy Heaven 2010-2020 We are very sorry to tell you that The Great Gatsby passed over the rainbow bridge on Thursday 2nd July peacefully in Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Headquarters in Cork. Gatsby, or Gats, as Tom called him, was one of a kind. He was loved by everyone who met him and by Tom in particular. He guided Tom for almost 8 wonderful years and was looking forward to his retirement when illness suddenly overtook him.

We’ve all seen Gatsby with Tom around the streets of Balbriggan, Skerries, Longford, Dublin and further afield. Gatsby was a fantastic tutor to the many students he visited with Tom in various schools and colleges around the country. Among other events he accompanied Tom along with Qeb, Breege’s guide dog, and Yarrow, puppy in training, with Anne Mulligan, to Skerries Community College in 2019 and 2020.

He was a brilliant fundraiser for the Balbriggan North County Dublin Branch of IGDB and if Tom couldn’t attend an event Gatsby went along willingly with whoever was trusted with him. Anne Mulligan local puppy raiser was one of his favorite people. Once he saw Anne he knew that it was time for his free run.He loved going to Ardgillan Park, the beach, Longford and many other places. Gatsby knew when he was working and when he was playing and thoroughly enjoyed his life. He always had a waggy tail waiting to greet anyone and everyone who called to the house.

Gatsby joined the O’Neill household when he was about 2 years old. Unice, Breege’s guide dog at the time, was a great help to Tom when Gatsby arrived as she taught Gatsby, among other things, the route 4

to his son Eoins house. Gatsby returned the favour when he welcomed young Qeb into the family in December 2018, co-incidentally he arrived on the day Unice, Breege’s retired Guide Dog, went over the rainbow bridge herself. Gatsby helped Qeb become familiar with his new surroundings, locality and family. Gatsby was in Longford, one of his favorite places, with Tom and Breege for a few days when he started to deteriorate.Tom was in contact with IGDB in Cork and they offered to collect Gatsby from Longford to bring him to Cork for medical care and assessment. Unfortunately it was found that Gatsby had Lymphatic cancer which had spread and could not be treated so it was decided to let him pass peacefully. Gatsby never showed his illness and was with Tom every step of the way.There are so many happy memories of Gatsby, lots of stories to be told but they are for another day. Gatsby will be sorely missed by Tom, Breege, their family and the extended family of volunteers who knew and loved him. Commemorative Sack of Balbriggan Coins to be minted

By Balbriggan Historical Society August is an important month for Heritage as Heritage Week takes place from August 15th to 23rd. Of course due to COVID-19 restrictions it will be very different this year as no public events can take place, instead there will be an emphasis on projects, research and online events. This year’s theme is “Heritage and Education Learning from our Heritage” and what better subject for research than the 1930’s Schools Folklore Collection. Balbriggan Schools were included in this project and a wealth of knowledge about our town and its history and traditions can be found in this fantastic resource available at Duchas.ie.

The collection was initiated by the Irish Folklore Commission under the direction of Séamus Ó Duilearga and Seán O Suilleabháin and between 1937 and 1939 more than 50,000 children from 5,000 schools were enlisted to collect folklore in their own district. Why not delve into the stories of our grandparents when they were children and share them with your own children today. We will be sharing some insights into the School collection and of course Balbriggan on our website so watch this space.The Centenary of the

Sack of Balbriggan is fast approaching so we will be focussing on this on our Social Media and Website during Heritage Week. We also have exciting news, we will shortly be taking delivery of a limited number of beautiful commemorative coins which will be available to purchase.

The coin depicts a scene from the Sack of Balbriggan and the Balbriggan town crest and comes with a booklet which contains a short history of each. We anticipate that this coin will be in huge demand as a momento of this important commemoration, along with the Calendar we produced earlier. Our Chairperson Brian Howley gave a historical tour of Balbriggan for Fingal County Council during July and if you haven’t seen this already you can check out a link to it on our website and Facebook page, you’ll be delighted how much you will learn about your town. The Centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan takes place in September and in line with Government Guidelines it looks like much of that may have to be online also, but we will keep you updated with our plans. Foróige Summer Programme goes ahead

Foróige Balbriggan have been busy providing summer programmes for young people between 10 and 18, throughout July and Early August.

Programmes included, health and Fitness, arts and crafts, activity weeks, graffiti, sports, Leadership, Football and Employability. The Youth Service have been continuing to provide care packs to families engaged with the project and encourage families to contact us should they need any further support.

Foróige Balbriggan will be providing transition programmes for young people going into first year and any young people who need support in transitioning back to school after the long break away. Foróige will be running employability programmes for young people between 16 and 24 assisting them to upskill, explore career options, develop CV’s and interview skills. An LGBT group for young people is taking place on a weekly basis and new participants are always welcome. Foróige Balbriggan are starting a young mothers group, for any mothers under 24. Personal development activities for mothers will run within the group. New participants are welcome. Foróige Balbriggan are seeking volunteers to run Foróige Clubs in Balbriggan and also to help staff with the running of the youth service. All volunteers must go through an application process and will receive training. Fingal C C commences planning application for Harry Reynolds Road

Fingal County Council has commenced the Part 8 planning application process for the Harry Reynolds Road Pedestrian and Cycle Route in Balbriggan.Mayor of Fingal Cllr David Healy said: “I welcome the start of the application process for the Harry Reynolds Road Pedestrian and Cycle Route scheme.It is fitting to have a cycling scheme on the road named in honour of the first Irish person to win a world cycling championship, the ‘Balbriggan Flyer. As a Council, we are committed to bringing our streets and roads in Fingal up to standard with safe designs for people walking and cycling. This design is part of that work. We are making these changes to our roads and streets in consultation with the local and wider community. In particular we are committed to listening to groups representing people who walk and cycle, and disabled road and street users, and to learning from good design practice in Ireland and abroad.I urge all in the community to engage with the proposal which is opening to public consultation this week and to give your feedback on the design.”Plans and particulars of the proposed development are available for inspection or purchase at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy from Tuesday 7th July 2020 to Wednesday 5th August 2020 at the following location: Fingal County Council, County Hall, Main Street, Swords, Co. Will video calls become the new normal for financial reviews?

By Dave Kavanagh A survey by one of the life companies has revealed that 9 out of 10 people in Ireland were not aware that financial reviews can be done by video call. Many of those surveyed would be in favour of doing a review this way. Some of the reasons cited were: personal safety - no risk of COVID-19, convenience - no driving or parking to meet, easy to arrange, and time saving - no journey to and from a meeting. The feedback from those that have availed of this service was also very posi-tive.

Why video and not just phone call?

It is often said that communication is about 20% what you say, 30% tone and 50% body language. It is far easier to understand what someone is explaining when you can see them.

The reverse is also true, it is easier to gauge the pace of how you’re explaining something when you can see the reactions of those you’re talking to. Also, screen sharing gives the ability to display a variety of graphics, screens or documents from both sides.

So what kind of things can you cover in a review? Most aspects of your current, future and

unex-pected income and expenditure. Your day to day budgeting, planning ahead for the short, medium and long term. Planning for unexpected events with things like life cover, serious illness cover and income protection (and making sure you are not over paying for existing plans!)

Calculating what you may need in planning for retirement, including looking at anything you may already have in place. Overall, keeping you up to date and in control of your finances. It could be the most im-portant video call you make this year!

Snapshots of Fingal’s Past – Fingal Heritage Office wants to hear from you!

everyday life, sport, farming, industry and crafts? The Fingal Heritage Network together with the Fingal Heritage Office wants to capture the snapshots of our past and the stories that they tell, for a virtual

exhibition.‘Originally planned as a live event we have had to adjust to

the current situation’ said Fingal Heritage Officer, Christine Baker ‘As a

project for National Heritage Week 15-23 August, we will tell the stories of our past through a virtual exhibition on the Fingal County Council

website’.To take part we need your photographs and a short paragraph

of no more than 500 words telling the story behind the ‘snapshot’. You

can email your photographs directly to the Heritage Officer at Christine. baker@fingal.ie. We can also arrange to have your photographs scanned and returned to you. The deadline for submission is 20thJuly 2020.This is an opportunity to record and share those fleeting stories caught on camera for the future and to remind people of events of the past that make Fingal such a special place to live.

Enjoying the Summer after Lockdown!

By Siobhan O’Neill White Finally, restrictions have been eased and we can get out of the house after being cooped up for so long. Here are some suggestions for family friendly places to visit this summer.

First off, Leisureplex. With all the rain lately, this is ideal indoor family fun. Their 6 locations have re-opened in accordance with Covid safety guidelines including hand sanitisers, social distance floorgraphics, “lane closed” bowling cones, safe-queuing floor graphics and safety shields at food diners.

For days out, Irish National Stud Kildare is fantastic. Explore the beautiful gardens, follow the fairy trails, see the horses and lunch at the café.

The children should sleep soundly after a day here!

Dublinia is a fascinating place to learn about Vikings and medieval Dublin. Our teenagers loved this especially discovering the weapons.

Interesting for all ages.

Niamh’s Summertime Frozen Yogurt Bark!

A satisfying and scrumptiously refreshing summertime snack! Packed with protein and calcium.

The ingredients are fairly flexible so tailor to your tastes and use whatever flavour of yogurt/ fruit/toppings you like! Vanilla yogurt or adding some honey make it scrumptious!

Multi-coloured yogurt bark • 250g Greek or Greek style yogurt • 1x passion fruit • 20g cocao nibs • 10g goji berries

The most important ingredient to use is Greek or Greek style yogurt as this will prevent ice crystals forming.

Here are a few other ideas as shown in the image

Ingredients: Blueberry yogurt bark 14 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-AUGUST 2020

200g Greek or Greek style yogurt 100g blitzed blueberries (in a blender or simply mash with a fork)

Tip: The size of the lunchbox you use determines the thickness of the bark.

I used a 12cm lunchbox for the yogurt bark in these images which made the yogurt bark 1cm thick. If the yogurt bark is too thick, it will be difficult to bite into it!

Method: 1. Line a lunchbox with cling film.

2. Mix the yogurt in a bowl with your choice of ingredients. Keep a few to sprinkle on top.

3. Pour the yogurt into the lunchbox.

3. Sprinkle the remainder of the ingredients on top of the yogurt.

4. Put the lid on the lunchbox and place in a freezer for 2-4hours or until completely frozen.

You will need to allow a few minutes for it to slightly defrost and become soft before eating.

Balbriggan Rugby restarting within Covid guidelines

We are pleased to inform our members that we have completed the Health & Safety Plan, as required before our return to Rugby. Our preparations for our return to Rugby continue at the club! Balbriggan RFC was delighted to take delivery of our customised pitchside and mobile sanitising stations today, which were designed and produced by local business Retink Graphics. job as always. Recently we also received our sanitiser and hi-vis vests for our Compliance Officers. We also received a very generous PPE package, courtesy of Irish Rugby. Thanks to them and Leinster Rugby for all their assistance in helping clubs like ours get back on the road to rugby. Thanks too to our volunteers on the Covid Compliance Committee for their hard work getting us to this point.
