Fingal Student is Young Scientist of the Year!

Fingal has celebrated the success of its students and schools in the 2019 BT Young Scientist competition, as Young Scientist of the Year Adam Kelly was recognised for his impressive achievement.Tributes were paid at the event on March 11 (Monday) in County Hall, Swords to his family, his teacher Ms Lennon, and his school, Skerries Community College, for supporting and aiding Adam’s winning efforts.

Students, teachers and family in attendance from Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan, St. Joseph’s in Rush, Portmarnock Community School, Le Chéile Secondary School, and Coláiste Pobail Setanta were also praised and recognised.Adam’s win continues a tradition of victory for Fingal students in this competition.

In 2016, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura claimed the prize for Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan.

Adam’s project, entitled “Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits”, explores efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.Quantum computing uses subatomic particles to drive computer calculations and processes.

It is a complex, emerging field with exciting technological and scientific applications, including the possibility of increased computing speed and power.Following Adam’s victory in the all-Ireland competition, he will go on to represent Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists

Fingal County Council has been active in promoting STEM to students and children, with Fingal Libraries hosting STEM Saturdays events in 2018 featuring coding, robots and engineering through LEGO.

Active Age Pickleballers make history

Active Age for all Pickleball event

History was made recently when Active Age for All hosted the largest group of Pickleballers to ever come together in the Republic of Ireland at a fun event . It all started a year ago when Sean Buckley from The Burrow, home on holidays from Canada introduced AafA members to the game.

Westmeath came to the event hosted by AAfA Peninsula Pickleballers.They were very impressed with all the facilities of Donabate Portrane Community Centre and thé fantastic Sportshall which we have on Tuesday & Thursday afternoons courtesy of the Community College, for Bowls & Pickleball.

On arrival, they had a tour of the peninsula, then went to Keelings Pub for a fantastic fish

lunch before two hours of Pickleball 3-5pm. This was followed by delicious refreshments provided

by Wayne Hand in Café Naturale.

Our American super coach Debbie Browne was really delighted with the standard of Pickleball played by all. Most importantly it was a great bit of craic!

Balbriggan Historical Society table quiz Balbriggan Historical Society held our first talk on Wednesday March 27th and it was on the subject of Séamus Ennis, the 100th Anniversary of whose birth is being celebrated this year. Many people in Balbriggan would have known Séamus and the other members of the Ennis family so it was important to make this anniversary.On Thursday April 4th we will be hosting a Quiz upstairs in the Milestone Inn. This is now an annual event and always provides a good night’s entertainment. Brian Kavanagh is busy putting together a list of questions to test you on the night - but he promises they won’t be too tough!. Teams of 4 €40 per team - but don’t worry if don’t have a team as we can fix you up with one on the night. Come along at 8 for an 8.30 start.

On Wednesday April 24th we will have a talk in theTown Hall Balbriggan at 8pm called Ardgillan Revealed - A lecture by Aiden J Herron author of the recently published and hugely popular book of the same name. The book was launched by Pat Kenny in Ardgillan last year and features beautiful photography by Eamon O’Daly. ‘Cult drinks’ - fingal’s enterprise award winners for 2019 A drinks business from Donabate is this year’s winner of the Fingal Enterprise Award for 2019.

Organised by the network of Local Enterprise Offices nationwide, Local Enterprise Week was held during the week 4th to 8th March 2019 and featured 370 events running throughout the country, aimed at stimulating and supporting enterprise. Estimated attendance nationally was over 11,000. Fingal events accounted for over 1,000 businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs Cult Drinks took the top prize of €5,000 and will now represent Local Enterprise Office Fingal at the 21st National Enterprise Awards on Wednesday 29thMay in the Mansion House in Dublin.

Employing ten staff from their based in Donabate, Cult Drinks have successfully launched and built a diversified portfolio of brands in both the domestic, UK and Global markets.

There were two runners-up at the Fingal Enterprise Awards held at County hall in Swords: Busterbox from Ballycoolin (a subscription service for dog owners) and Peptalk of Lucan (a technology platform for employees to improve wellbeing). Each runner-up receives an investment of €2,000 in their business, while the other seven finalists receive €1,000.

Judging is taking place in April and May and Cult Drinks will be competing against 30 other finalists from every local authority area for a share of the National €40,000 prize fund.

The Mansion House in Dublin is the venue for awards ceremony in May and categories this year include ‘Best Export Business,’ ‘Best Start Up Business’ and ‘Innovation,’ in addition to eight regional awards.

Speaking during Local Enterprise Week Oisin Geoghegan Head of Fingal Local Enterprise Office said: “Cult Drinks has already become a

success story and the judges were particularly impressed by the year-on-year success of this business.The National Enterprise Awards are a great barometer for what the Local Enterprise Offices are doing and every year the standard is getting better and better and we are delighted to have Cult Drinks representing us in the Mansion House in May.”

What you should know about Serious Illness Cover

By Dave Kavanagh If there is one aspect of protection that crops up time and time again, it’s Serious Illness Cover (a.k.a. Critical Illness Cover or Specified Illness Cover) but not always for the right reasons! Quite often, the topic comes up because someone has received unpleasant medical news and it prompts them to consider the “what if ” scenarios. Sadly, in many cases, it is too late at this point to be permitted to take out Serious Illness Cover. The usual medical underwriting that takes place when someone applies for cover is more stringent on Serious Illness Cover than it is for say, Life Cover. The reason is that you are far more likely to be diagnosed with one of the Specified illnesses during the term of a plan than you are to pass away.So what exactly is Serious Illness Cover and why is it so important? The cover will pay out a tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of a large number of Specified Illnesses.

While the list is quite long, the vast majority of claims are for the “big 5”, Cancer, Heart Disease, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis and Loss of Independence. It is not dependent on your ability to work

or the severity of how you are affected.

If it is one of the definitions covered, you are paid. The best time to conside.

Serious Illness Cover? Is when you don’t think you need it! At the very least, get a free quote for cover from someone who can quote the premiums of a number of companies. It’s quick and easy and you can then make an informed decision for yourself. Saying that you’ll “look at it” at some point in the future?
