Heritage Week 2019 event presented by Balbriggan Heritage Group

The Balbriggan Heritage Week event this year was a slide

show and talk with the title ‘Fashionable Seaside Town -

Balbriggan 1760 - 1960’. The event took place on Tuesday

20th August in Balbriggan library and was organised by Petra Skyvova and David Sorensen of Balbriggan Heritage Group.

It attracted almost 50 people in attendance including families with children, which is quite a success for this type of event.

Since the 1760s, Balbriggan had been a well-known seaside

town, famed for its fresh sea air and hot seaweed bath.With the opening of the railway line in 1844, Balbriggan truly took off as a fashionable resort to spend time for the summer season. The

Balbriggan Regatta attracted crowds of on-lookers, gentlemen and elegantly dressed ladies. If you want to learn more about

Thank for the Big Beach Clean up in Balbriggan

A big well done to all the volunteers who turned up for the Clean Coasts Bi-Annual Big Beach Clean in Balbriggan recently. A lot of rubbish from along the coast and the beach steps where cleared of sand and weeds.

Graffiti was removed from the bins and the flower beds in Quay Street were weeded. A great community effort and a big thank you to all involved‌ Remember Balbriggan Tidy Towns meet every Saturday at 11:00am at the hut on the beach. They work tirelessly throughout the year so if you have a bit of time to spare please come along and help improve our fantastic town.

Balbriggan Meals on Wheels -Annual General Meeting

Balbriggan Meals on Wheels is holding its AGM on Thursday 7th November at 8.15pm in The Order of Malta Hall, 14 Hampton Street Balbriggan.All interested members of the community are invited to attend and the group would be delighted to welcome any new people on board.

Balbriggan Meals on Wheels was founded in 1975 in order to provide meals for people who were ill, recovering from illness, or for some reason were unable to care for themselves. Balbriggan Meals on Wheels currently provides in the region of 70 - 80 meals per day, with meals delivered to the most vulnerable people in our community; people who are referred to us by Public Health Nurses and Social Workers. It is an essential service and requires all the support it can get; both in monetary terms and by means of the time that our volunteers contribute to keeping the service running.

25th anniversary of municipal arts launched

A major exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of Fingal County Council’s diverse, engaging and captivating Municipal Art Collection was officially opened on September 12. Organised by the Fingal Arts Office, ‘Estuary’ was launched by Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien at the Draíocht Arts Centre in Blanchardstown with special guest poet, writer and lecturer, Theo Dorgan. The exhibition will continue until November 17.This major exhibition curated by well-known Fingal artists Una Sealy RHA, James English RHA, Joshua Sex and Sanja Todorovic features works by national and international artists, graduates, emerging artists and local artists. The Fingal County Council Municipal Art collection features mostly two-dimensional work such as paintings, drawings, prints and photographs, which date from c1958 – 2018. There are some three-dimensional works which include sculpture, ceramics and mixed media.

Speaking at the launch Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said “I would like to thank all those involved with this exhibition ‘ESTUARY’ and the publication ‘Not in Alphabetical Order 2’, especially our arts staff, the guest curators, and the artists who created these works. Our Arts office continue to lead an ambitious programme of arts activity and strategies which have always sought to push the boundaries of what is expected and bring the best experiences to our

communities.”The second volume of ‘Not in Alphabetical Order’ highlighting the collection’s latest acquisitions was also launched at the opening of ‘Estuary’.In 2008, the first volume was produced and provided a snapshot of work from the collection. Artists were invited to comment on their particular work from the collection which provided an insight in to their creative process and was accompanied by a reflection on its inclusion in the collection by County Arts

Budgeting Smarter - How to have more of your money left over

By Dave Kavanagh Every choice you make, every activity you do, every change you contemplate, are in some way connected to your finances. You have income.

You have expenditure. The aim is that the first one is always greater than the second, that leaves you with “disposable income”.For most people, the income side is relatively constant. So how can you improve the amount you have left over?

On the spending side. The first thing to realise is that most people don’t accurately know the full details of their expenditure. They’ll know some of the main and regular ones, but not all.

You can test this by trying to list everything that you spent last month, then look at what you actually spent. They will rarely match. (Think of the last time you took €50 out of an ATM to buy something for €10, for example, what did the other €40 go on?) So the first step is to undertake a strict monitoring of spending for a month. Every cent spent on anything, whether cash, cards or direct debit. Log it every evening.

After a month, you’ll have something to work with. The first thing you will usually no-tice is that you spent money on things that you really did not need to (and often wish you hadn’t!)

This can help moving forward with reducing spending. But what else can you do? A few tips to cut spending further and hence, improve how

much you have left over each month:Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single transaction. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be. Direct debits they forgot to cancel. Subscriptions no longer relevant. Doubling up on things like house insurance (happens a lot!). Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry).

This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Also, check your receipt after going through the till. “Acci-dental” over-charging is far more prevalent than you may realise. (Since I began keeping record, one store has overcharged me 65 times!) Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not cur-rently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. A little research can produce big savings. Com-pare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renewals ar-rive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save you hundreds of euro.Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection/serious illness cover.

Especial-ly if you arranged it directly with a bank

or insurance company that could only quote you for their products.

Massive savings can be made doing this, as you pay for them over such a long period.In over 20 years of helping people with their finances, I have never seen anyone NOT make savings by doing the above. Balbriggan is the place to be in September 2020!

The centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan by the Black and Tans in September 1920 takes place next year and Balbriggan & District Historical Society is working to commemorate this major historic event in an appropriate and inclusive manner. This critically important part of our town’s history involved the shooting dead of one RIC member, Peter Burke, and the wounding of another, which prompted the subsequent havoc wreaked on the town and its inhabitants by the Black and Tans. Numerous houses, a factory and several business premises in the town were destroyed as a result, and hundreds of people were forced to sleep outdoors for several nights in fear of their lives. The night of terror on 20th September culminated in the brutal murder of two local men, James Lawless and John Gibbons by the Black and Tans. Building on contacts that

the Society has forged with local schools, we plan to work with them in early 2020, providing them with information regarding the Sack, and encouraging enthusiastic involvement from all.

In the weeks leading up to September 2020, Sack-related historical walks of the town will be organised. In co-operation with local businesses and Fingal County Council, we intend to organise a photographic exhibition to be displayed in the streets and in local businesses throughout the town. Weekend Commemoration, 19th & 20th September 2020. A full-day seminar will take place in the Bracken Court Hotel on Saturday, 19th September, involving a series of talks related to the Sack of Balbriggan and its aftermath, including events from the perspective of the RIC. We hope to have an exhibition of contemporary media reports of the events, together with other

memorabilia relating to the Sack. On Sunday, 20th September, a religious service will be held, followed by a parade and a wreathlaying ceremony at the Lawless and Gibbons plaque on Bridge Street – an opportunity for everyone to get involved. In addition, we plan to publish a book on the Sack of Balbriggan, and the unveiling of a commemorative memorial in the town is another idea that is gaining momentum. Watch out for our Sack of Balbriggan commemorative medals and calendars which will be available for sale from this November (2019). Halloween Safety Tips for your Pet Halloween can be a festive and fun time for children and families.

But for pets? Let’s face it, it can be a nightmare. Skip the stress and keep your pets safe this year.

Trick or Treat Sweets are not for pets.-All forms of chocolate— especially baking or dark chocolate can be dangerous, even lethal, for dogs and cats. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning may include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures. Halloween candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar and subsequent loss of co-ordination and seizures.

Don’t Leave Pets Outside-Vicious pranksters have been known to tease, injure, steal, and even kill pets on Halloween night. Inexcusable? Yes! But preventable nonetheless. Black cats are especially at risk from pranks or other cruelty-related incidents at this time of the year.

Keep Pets Confined and Away from the Front Door-Indoors is certainly better than outdoors on Halloween, but your door will be constantly opening

and closing, and strangers will be on your doorstep dressed in unusual costumes. This, of course, can be scary for our furry friends, which can result in escape attempts or unexpected aggression. Putting your dog or cat in a secure crate or room away from the front door will reduce stress and prevent them from darting outside into the night…a night when no one wants to be searching for a lost loved one.

Use Calming Products - The sound of Fireworks are 1000 times louder for our pets than for us. This can lead to severe anxiety in our pets. There are a number of items available to help reduce the effect of this, but starting your pet on them early makes them a lot more effective.

Pet ID’s-If your dog or cat should escape and become lost, having the proper identification will increase the chances that he or she will be returned. Collars and tags are ideal if a Good Samaritan is able to collect your wayward pet, but microchips offer permanent identification should the collar or tag fall off. Just make sure the information is up-to-date.

Halloween and how it evolved over the years

Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago. All Hallows Eve is the evening before All Saints Day, which was created

of Halloween, some remain consistent by all accounts. Different cultures view Halloween somewhat differently but traditional Halloween practices remain the same.Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead.Samhain signifies “summers end” or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires,

marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating. Happy trick – or -treating !

Spooktacular bites for Halloween!

This time of year brings lots of colourful vegetables such as butternut squash, sweet potato, kale, beetroot, carrots, parsnipsand of course the Halloween tradition.....pumpkins!!!!Autumn also brings a chillier change in the weather so it is brilliant that we have all these bright veggies to stock up our wholesome soups, casseroles, stews and make us feel warm from the inside out! Especially if we are out venturing, trick or treating or celebrating our Celtic festival ‘Oíche Shamhna’.Here’s a few fun ‘fang-tastic’ ideas to make sure we are getting our fill of nutrition and not just filling with treats!

Cheeky Cheesestring Broomsticks! and peel back the cheese 1.Cut a cheese string in half strips at one end. three quarters of the way into into the opposite end.

2. Push a bread stick or pretzel

2 large sweet potatoes makes about 30 shapes of varying sizes!

Preheat oven to 200’c.

1.First wash and peel the sweet potatoes.

2.Slice into circles.

3.To speed up cooking time, boil the sweet potato slices for 8 minutes. (The water from boiling could be used as stock for asoup/ casserole as it will contain some nutrients that leached out of the sweet potatoes!)

4.Drain and place the shapes on a baking tray. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of oil and add herbs/spices of your liking! (I like mine with Balsamic vinegar and black pepper!)

5.Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes at 200’c to get them nice and crispy!

Petrifying Pepper Monsters •

1.Wash and dry the peppers. Then slice around the top of the pepper and lift this new ‘lid’ off.

• 2.Scoop out the inside of the pepper.

• 3.Using a sharp knife carve the face or whichever design you like into one side of the pepper.

• 4.Fill the pepper with an already cooked wholesome meal, hummus or filling of your desire!

• 5.You could also roast the peppers to make them softer to eat by placing them on a baking tray • with oil/baking sheet and place in the oven at 200’c. for 30-35 minutes.

Fingal County Council is seeking the public’s assistance in curbing the spread of Japanese knotweed. The local authority is asking the public to record all sightings of Japanese knotweed on public and private property in order to find any remaining stands that have not been recorded so far.

Japanese Knotweed was first introduced to Ireland as a garden plant from Japan in the 19th century. It escaped from gardens and has now spread across Ireland. This invasive species can seriously undermine the structural integrity of roads and buildings.In Fingal, the plant can be found throughout the

county but is particularly abundant in Balbriggan. Fingal County Council is keen to eradicate this invasive species. 184 locations have been identified so far and a treatment program got underway in 2018 with the aim to eradicate the Japanese knotweed from the county.All sightings of Japanese Knotweed in Fingal can be submitted to the County Council by email to biodiversity@ fingal.ie. The Council is asking the public to include a map or a precise location of the stand and ideally include a picture of the plant to confirm if it is Japanese Knotweed.
