When politics and religion are too incendiary, and gossip can rebound on you, there is always the weather to discuss. And, where weather is concerned, we generally have a pessimistic view! “Yes, it has been a nice couple of days, but it can’t last, there’s a cold/rainy spell on the horizon - I feel it in my bones.” June, in fairness, is a month of change - officially it is Summer but the month is not quite Spring, not quite Summer, long evenings but not as long as they will be in July and August, warm but with a hint of heat to come. It’s the time of year to get off a little early from work, see if the barbeque has survived the Winter, get the kids out of the house (without any electronic playthings), limit TV watching and generally get the garden up to scratch. And, when the weekend comes around, this is the time of year when you will find plenty to do in Fingal. With parks and beaches galore every family can enjoy free fun at their own pace or veg out in the often vain attempt to get a suntan before sunburn :) And, when you are out, bring a camera, we are always looking for local Fingal photos - who knows, we might even print some of them (in December! to remind everyone that we actually did have a Summer).

Towns and Villages funding scheme The Department of Arts Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has launched a new round of funding for 2017 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The focus of the Scheme is to develop projects to enhance and develop towns and villages socially, economically and culturally. Last year seven communities across Fingal shared €380,000 in grants from the scheme which has seen its funding increase from €10 million to €12m for 2017 with a similar amount anticipated for 2018. The scheme will be administered in two separate phases and over a two year period. Phase 1 will concentrate on projects to enhance and develop towns and villages socially, economically and culturally while Phase 2, which will be launched in the second half of 2017, will be a pilot to encourage residential occupancy. Fingal County Council is now seeking expressions of interest from community and business interests in the towns and villages in Fingal for projects for development as part of the Scheme. The Council’s Director of Economic Enterprise, Ed Hearne, hopes communities in the County will submit expressions of interests by the deadline of May 29, 2017. “This is an excellent opportunity for communities throughout Fingal to obtain funding to deliver projects which make our towns and villages vibrant places to live, work and do business in. Last year seven communities received grants ranging from €29,000 to €100,000 which was further supplemented by funding from Fingal County Council and enabled a wide variety of community projects to be completed,” said Mr Hearne. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said: “There is great pride throughout Fingal in where we live and the Town and Village Renewal Scheme is an opportunity to further improve our communities.” Expressions of Interest Applications and all the explanatory documents on the Scheme are now available at www.fingal.ie

In line with the previous scheme there are two categories of towns and villages; Category 1 being those towns and villages with a population of less than 5,000 and Category 2 being those towns with a population of greater than 5,001 and less than 10,000. The Census data for either 2011 or 2016 can be used. 60% of funding being made available will be for the category 1 towns. All applications under Phase 1 of the Scheme must be submitted to Fingal County Council by May 29 and the selection process will be a competitive one with the final decision being made by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Full involvement with community and business interests will be an essential feature of successful projects. The explanatory document includes a detailed list of the types of activities that can be supported but it should be noted that up to 80 per cent of the total project cost will be provided for any individual project with the minimum grant available being €20,000 and the maximum grant of €100,000. A higher maximum of €200,000 will be considered for a limited number of projects where a robust case demonstrating exceptionally strong economic benefit to the town can be made. The scheme also now provides for optional funding for public art works up to €20,000 which enhance public spaces as part of one or more proposals submitted in respect of their area. All projects will be required to commence in 2017 and will be expected to incur a reasonable proportion of expenditure by mid-November and this should be a consideration in the project selection process.

Refurbished City North marks new standard

Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys unveiled the newly refurbished CityNorth Hotel

and Conference Centre at a special event held on May 18. The evening was a glitzy affair with many

Ministers, Councillors and Local Personalities in the company of the TV broadcaster Alison Coymn who was the host for the evening. “The new lavish interior will be an eye opener for everyone, a real touch of class for the Royal County”, said Mr Cyril Laffan, GM for the CityNorth Hotel, he also commented that “after 10 years we felt we wanted to enhance our guest experience with a fresh new look, a daunting task but with the help of Project Manager Aoife Reilly from McGarrell Reilly and JD Duffy Design Group, the journey was made a lot easier, we are confident our guests will enjoy the updated look and feel of our hotel from the moment they walk in the door”. The CityNorth’s first phase renovations include, Guestrooms, Bar, New Buffet Area, Conference & Events Suite’s, Private Dining Experience and of course the Main Restaurant. “We strive to offer guests an experience that they will remember and the refurbishment shows our dedication to this experience”. Ardgillan Welcomes President Higgins

The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, marked the 25th anniversary of Ardgillan Castle and Walled Garden opening to the public by planting a tree in a ceremony on May 6. President Higgins planted a native Irish Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) close to the

Castle and the Walled Garden and not far from the Irish Oak Tree which was planted by President Mary Robinson in 1992 to mark the official opening of the facility to the public. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid,

elected members of Fingal County Council, members of the Oireachtas, members of the Ardgillan Board and other specially invited guests including members of the Taylour family for whom Ardgillan is their ancestral home. To mark his visit, the Mayor presented President Higgins with a speciallycommissioned bowl made from a beech tree grown on the Ardgillan estate while 10-yearold Lucy Maher, 10, presented him with a bouquet of Ardgillan flowers. “We were delighted when President Higgins accepted our invitation to visit Ardgillan Castle and Demesne and mark the 25th anniversary by planting a tree which will have a special significance for future generations who visit,” said Mayor Butler. The President was given a tour of the house by Fingal County Architect Fionnuala May and Ardgillan Castle Manager Tom Reilly and also a tour of the Walled Garden by Fingal County Council’s Senior Parks Superintendent Kevin Halpenny and Head Gardener Dominica McKevitt. He was also introduced to members of the house and gardening staff. Built in 1738, Ardgillan Castle and Demesne has been in public ownership since 1982 and Fingal County Council has been responsible for it since its formation in 1994. As well as being one of the county’s prime tourist destinations, its open spaces, walks and playground are also enjoyed daily by the local community The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “The President’s visit is an important acknowledgement of the great work done by the staff based at Ardgillan and we greatly appreciate him taking the time to visit.”

Paul’s church Balbriggan at the 10am mass as part of the church choir but in recent times he has also sang solo in the church and last year was called the fourth tenor when the Celtic Tenors did their concert in St Peter and Paul’s church Balbriggan. So come along and support Andrew and by doing this you are also helping to raise the profile of the local branch of guide dogs and of course the profile of the wonderfully talented tenor singer Andrew Green.

WIFI4EU moves a step closer to reality in Fingal

Cllr Malachy Quinn (SF) has welcomed the news that that public WIFI is a step closer for North Fingal, This follows confirmation from his party colleague Liadh NíRiada MEP, that her report on WIFI4EU has been adopted by a committee vote this week in Strasbourg. The public WiFi proposals will now move to the Plenary stage where they are expected to be passed, paving the way for the creation of

WiFi hubs in towns and villages across Fingal. Ms Ní Riada, who is the lead negotiator on the WiFi4EU project, said the initiative would “help bring connectivity and investment to rural areas”. Cllr Quinn said, “This is an important project for Fingal and I now urge all communities without this type of infrastructure to keep an eye on the scheme and avail of it when it is rolled out. “It is a very simple but effective idea. It requires a relatively small investment of some €120m Europe wide that, if used wisely, will have huge returns for the communities it benefits. “The basic premise is that we equip as many towns and villages as possible with free wireless internet access, centred on the main centres of public life in that area, by 2020. “It would be focused on places like parks, squares, libraries, health centres, museums, areas of poverty and in areas where people happen to congregate in numbers. “While the scheme will be dispersed in as geographically balanced a manner as possible, I feel it is important that special consideration is given to rural and peripheral areas of Fingal, particularly those suffering from a lack of internet access. It may seem ridiculous that such places exist in 2017 but I can think of several in North Fingal & East

Meath alone. “This scheme will bear huge benefits for peripheral communities, allowing local social enterprises access to a global market is crucial in today’s economy. These are the back bone to local economies and any imitative which benefits our young people in particular and helps them to stay in Ireland has to be welcomed. “It will be used to promote things like health and e-tourism; the scheme is only as limited as the imagination of the communities it will benefit. Cllr Quinn then concluded, “€20m is going to be made available for the scheme before the end of 2017 and one of the most important aspects is its accessibility. We will ensure that applying to the scheme is open, easy and free of needless bureaucracy. A simple online application system will be set up and I will be actively encouraging Fingal County Council to take part. “I would also ask internet providers to fully engage with this scheme through the local authority tenders and take responsibility for providing internet connectivity to much deprived areas. “Proposals like this are the type that were originally envisaged for the EU. A social partnership of countries working together to improve the lives of everyone from Balbriggan to Bucharest.”

Phoenix Twirl to Success

Balbriggan based Phoenix Baton Twirlers, made a strong show of strength at the recent Open Competition hosted by Greystones Baton Twirlers, Co. Wicklow This year was one of the largest competitions to date with 10 clubs from different associations represented Their youngest athletes at this competition at a tender age of 2 years of age took to the floor and showed they also have what it takes to compete and also win at not only individual events but also within team events. At each competition, the club continue to introduce new events as the athletes continue to work hard and grow. The girls worked very hard over the last number of month and did themselves the coaches and the club extremely proud, brining home an impressive haul of trophies. Phoenix is a member of the

BTSAI Baton Twirling Sport Association of Ireland, the governing body of the sport, and sanctioned by the Irish Sports Council. Martial Arts Expert visits Balbriggan

Guro Jason Boh who will be sharing his knowledge and experience of Bruce Lee Jeet Kune Do and the Martial Arts of the Philippines and Indonesia. The head instructor of the Jason Boh School of Martial Arts in Portsmouth and affiliate school in Skerries. Jason started his martial arts journey in 1983 with Shotokan Karate where he enjoyed great success competitively at both National and International levels and reached the level of 4th Dan. Noticeboard & Parish News “Buried in Fingal” Website Launch Fingal County Council has launched a new free online database of all its burial records, indexed and fully searchable. The Council has responsibility for 33 burial grounds, and has records of burials dating back to 1905. Apart from the burial records of over 65,000 people interred in Fingal between 1905 and 2005, the database also contains information about the history of each graveyard, maps and drawings,

photographs and location information, notes of notable burials and extracts from interesting epitaphs. The database is accessible via the website of Fingal County Council (www.fingal.ie), on the Burial Grounds page, or by simply searching for “Buried in Fingal”. Speaking regarding the launch Colm McQuinn, Archivist Fingal County Council said “The database “Buried in Ireland” will provide an invaluable resource for Genealogists and anyone interested in Historical research.”
