It May be a sunny month!

The beginning of May is associated with the Celtic festival of Bealtaine. This marked the start of the season of blossoming flowers and fruit trees. It’s good news for the majority of people but for those with a pollen allergy May sees grass pollen counts rise (all the way through to August!). The first Monday of May became a public holiday following the Public Holiday Regulations 1993 Act. The holiday was first observed in 1994. Introduced by Ruairi Quinn, it is thought by many as a day to celebrate Ireland workers but that is not the case officially. Japanese workers, however, have it made - there are four holidays between April 29 and May 5. They call it ‘The Golden Week.’ May marks the start of Summer and the restart of the weather debate with older people recalling the blistering heat of 1959, 1968, 1975 and 1976! Records show that, since 1880, May is the best month for sunshine. While it is impossible to predict accurately what this May is going to be like, the people at Accuweather.com took a stab at it - they reckon we’ll have just one sunny day, 25 cloudy days and 4 days of rain.

Ardgillan Celebrates 25 Years at the heart of the community

When Robert Taylor, the grandson of Oliver Cromwell’s chief cartographer, Thomas Taylor, bought the Ardgillan estate in 1737, he had no way of knowing that two presidents of Ireland would visit his magnificent manor hundreds of years later. Ardgillan Castle is celebrating its 25th anniversary on the weekend of May 13-14, and the event has been kick-started by President Michael D. Higgins with the planting of a tree in the park, twenty-five years after former President Mary Robinson performed the same task when the castle was first opened to the public in 1992. In the intervening years Ardgillan has become a dynamic community amenity for local people from all over the North County, Louth and Meath with its wide open spaces; magnificent gardens; state-of-the-art playground; variety of castle events and dog-friendly café. The most exciting aspect of the Ardgillan demesne is the location. Set in rolling parkland overlooking the Irish Sea with squirrels bouncing all around the place it certainly feels like it is a set from a Disney movie. The Taylor family occupied the castle up to 1962 when it became too expensive to maintain and it was sold to a German industrialist. Dublin City Council bought the estate in 1982 and the castle was opened to the public in May 1992. The castle is now owned by Fingal County Council 4

and it is managed by Ardgillan Castle Ltd. under the auspices of the Council. Today, in keeping with the Disney theme, hundreds of children from the area have had their childhood memories shaped by the fun and games that they have found throughout the demesne, including leprechaun and Easter egg hunts, children’s parties, a unique fairy trail through the woods, visits to Santa, the superb playground, negotiating the huge climbing wall, paintball target shooting or just rolling down the undulating landscape. Adults are also well catered for with tours of the castle, Afternoon Tea in the sumptuous Drawing Room, wedding ceremonies, archetypal Tea Rooms, art, sewing and ballet classes, a wonderful walled garden, conference and meeting facilities, Paws at Ardgillan - the only dogfriendly café in a municipal park in the country - and any amount of forest walks. Ardgillan Castle is celebrating being open to the public for 25 years on Sunday May 14th The free celebrations, suitable for all ages, will include; Living History Re-enactments in that Castle, Traditional Craft Demonstrations in the Courtyard and Entertainment in the Marquee.

The Living History events include: A Grand Ball - Music & Dance - The Dancing Master leads the steps of Country Dances, etc., for a party of 10 elegant ladies and gentlemen who will be glad to help you join the cotillion. The Music Man - While the Quality have their dances upstairs, downstairs make music of their own, with tunes from Carolan, and traditional pipes and harping. The Domestic Arts - Cook rules the 18th century kitchen; cooking, needlework, spinning and weaving to taste and try. Children’s Games - Pall-Mall, skittles, quoits, spinning tops, cup-and-ball; all very different from today’s pursuits! The Barber-Surgeon - 18th century medicine at its very worst! Get your teeth pulled, bloodletting and hair cutting performed with equal skill (not really!). The School Master - he will teach the unlettered to write with a quill pen and explain how to keep a record with tally sticks. The Blacksmith - Hear the ring of the anvil as the blacksmith plies his trade. Traditional Craft Stalls will include Pottery, Basket Making, Embroidery, Wool Spinning, Lace Making and Wood Turning

Mayor of Fingal on the run! The Lord Mayor of Fingal, cllr. Darragh Butler, continued his promise to complete all six Fingal Parkruns last month with the Ardgillan Parkrun. “Despite the hill that everyone had warned me about, Ardgillan really is a great course and a beautiful location with fantastic views,” he says “I would recommend it to all.” 132 runners and walkers turned out on what was probably the best weather of the year so far and Alessandro Porazzini set a new course record of 17:05. “The support I am getting on the courses is fantastic. Whenever I stop for a breather and to walk for a bit, I am getting encouragement to continue and keep going, which is both great and exhausting. This helped me set a personal best at Porterstown and hopefully will push me further on the events to come.” With Donabate, Porterstown and Ardgillan out of the way all that’s left are Malahide, Hartstown and his home turf at River Valley, Swords. Runners, walkers and volunteers are most welcome to all Parkruns - full details are available from parkrun.ie

Retrofit grants scheme is

welcomed Independent Alliance Councillor Tony Murphy has welcomed a new €5m multi-annual scheme to provide financial support to people who want to upgrade their homes to an ‘A’ rating on the Building Energy Rating (BER) scale. The money will fund major energy efficiency upgrades to homes and low carbon heating systems and will be administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). It will meet up to half the cost of upgrades for individual householders. Deep retrofit is a significant upgrade to bring a home as close as possible to Nearly Zero Energy Building standards. People live in a wide variety of homes across a broad swathe of locations and they live in very different circumstances, be they homeowners or renters. There will be no grants for fossil fuel based systems under this scheme.

Self-employed people in the North County can now benefit from free dental and optical exams through the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the first time. That’s according to Fine Gael Dublin Fingal TD, Alan Farrell who has welcomed the move by Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar to extend these PRSI benefits to 450,000 self-employed people and their spouses across the State. “The Treatment Benefit Scheme covering free dental and optical exams has been restored to employees, and crucially is now also being extended to self-employed people for the first time ever. “This means that small business owners farmers, tradesmen, freelancers, contractors and professionals in North County can now benefit from this Scheme for the first time. “People who work for themselves and pay PRSI at class S can now get the same regular dental and optical examinations, free of charge, that until now were only available to employees. They can also get a grant for hearing aids of 50% of the cost, to a maximum of €500 per aid, every four years. “Many small business owners in Fingal have spoken to me in the past about the fact that they were not entitled to State

supports, compared with PAYE employees. We all know that successful small businesses are more likely to create jobs, thereby increasing the opportunities for job seekers in our local towns and villages. Supporting the self-employed is good news for the whole community. “I was also pleased to hear Minister Varadkar confirm that more benefits are to come and we will look to further strengthen supports for the self-employed. “This will include the restoration of scale and polish treatment under the dental scheme, and the option of free spectacles or a contribution towards a more expensive pair under the optical scheme. The past division between employees and selfemployed people will be eradicated as from now on, the restoration of benefits such as these will be available to both groups here in the North County. “Minister Varadkar will also make the invalidity pension available to self-employed contributors who cannot work due to long term illness or disability. This will be a really welcome move for self-employed people here in Fingal who, for the first time ever will have that security if they are unable to work.

Call to increase Garda strength

Garda numbers in Fingal have declined by twenty per cent in north county Dublin over the last five years says Darragh O’Brien TD. He has raised the issue with the Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, calling for more Gardai to be assigned. Between 2010 and 2016 the number of Gardai at Malahide decreased from 37 to 31, Swords (84 to 72), Coolock (120 to 105) and Garristown (3 to 2). Lusk (7 to 10) and Balbriggan (68 to 69) showed increases over the same period. “We simply do not have enough Gardai to prevent criminal activity in North Dublin,” says deputy O’Brien. “We need more Gardai assigned to police our community. Other measures such as improved CCTV schemes and establishing community alert groups also have a part to play.”

Old Fingal brought to life!

Members of heritage groups and historical societies from across Fingal gathered in mid-April at County Hall to launch a Local History Exhibition. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Darragh Butler who launched the exhibition said “We are very lucky in Fingal to have so many groups in all parts of the county who work tirelessly to celebrate our rich history and heritage. This work which is often unseen is important and vital work which helps to build and sustain communities across the county”. Fingal Students benefit from grant changes Fingal County Council students who are less well-off, and those taking a second chance at college, should benefit from changes to the education grants scheme, according to local Independent Alliance Cllr Tony Murphy The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, has informed Cllr Tony Murphy that the changes are aimed at making college more accessible to all. A total of €380m is being made available in grants nationwide. Announcing the changes Minister Zappone said: “It is only right that everyone should have an equal chance to avail of third level education - no matter what their financial circumstances.” The key changes include: Maintenance grants to support 1,100 of the most disadvantaged postgraduate students and changes which allow second chance mature students to complete a post Leaving Cert Programme within a 5 year break period. The Grant Application Process is also opening up earlier than usual to allow students extra time to consider options and submit their forms. Cllr Murphy has welcomed the additional funding and has encouraged all students to take time to consider the supports which are available and come forward and use them. The Mayor of Fingal, cllr. Darragh Butler, was among the dignitaries who welcomed local athletes back home after their successful trip to the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. The Irish team brought back a whopping eight medals, two gold, three silver, and, three bronze.

Fingal County Council’s Primary School Athletics League Final took place on April 5 in Morton Stadium, Santry. This participation focused event saw approximately 1,700 students representing 44 schools from all over Fingal create an unbelievable atmosphere at the National Athletics Arena. The event which was organised by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office is supported by Athletics Ireland, Fingallians AC, Metro St. Brigid’s AC, Lusk AC and Clonliffe Harriers AC. This year Cricket Leinster and the Football Association of Ireland came on board to offer their support at this truly multi-activity day! The final saw boys and girls from third to sixth class compete separately with distances ranging from 300 metres to 650 metres depending on the age group. Everyone got a medal for participating on the day and they all got a chance to try out the javelin, do some sprints, dazzle coaches with their dribbling skills and show their bowling and batting technique on the multi-activity fun field after completing their race.

In all 17 awards were handed out with Bayside NS winning the Best Overall School award in the North County Section. Niall Mc Guirk, Senior Sports Development Officer, Fingal County Council, said: “Our athletics league was created to provide a fun environment for children to become physically active and to give children of all abilities an opportunity to take part in athletics, with an emphasis on encouraging the less active kids to get involved. Obviously due to the huge numbers attending schools are happy with the league and it wouldn’t be such a success without the commitment shown by the teachers and principals who are all helping to develop a strong sporting ethos in their respective schools.” Dublin 15 League Girls: Group A: Mount Sackville. ‘Bear-illiant’ teddy bear treats

40g Rice Krispies cereal 120g Nut butter (eg. peanut, almond, cashew etc) 2 tablespoons linseed (flaxseed) or sesame seeds (or both!) 2 tablespoons natural liquid sweetener eg. Agave/maple/ date syrup or honey

1.Place rice Krispies and seeds into a bowl. Add the nut butter and natural sweetener and mix well altogether. 2. Divide the mixture into 8, roll with your hands into a ball and squish down a little to make a flat pattie! 3. Cut dark chocolate diagonally at the corners to make triangle shapes for the ears and nose. Cut the prunes in half. Make the mouth shape with one half and cut the other half in half again and roll into small beady eyes!! 4. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes & enjoy as they “Snap, Crackle and Pop” !!!

Mayor opens Book of Condolence for R116 Crew

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, signs the Book of Condolence for the crew members of R116.

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, is pictured signing the Book of Condolences at County Hall, Swords, for the four crew members of the Fingal-based Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter R116 which crashed into the sea off Blackrock Island, Co Mayo, on March 14. A minute’s silence was observed at the start of Council’s April meeting in memory of the four crew members. Winchman Ciarán Smith, a native of Swords and a resident of Oldtown, was one of those on board along with his colleagues Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Captain Mark Duffy and Winch Operator Paul Ormsby.
