Editor’s Note April - Time to Rise!

If March centres around St. Patrick’s Day, April is when we begin to appreciate that Spring has really arrived - the temperatures rise (as do our spirits!) and the days begin to have a bit of length in them once more. For those who figure Winter is a time to stay indoors, April offers the chance to get out and about again, to enjoy taking a bit of exercise without fearing frostbite and, with a bit of luck, fewer children to hose down after their various mucky escapades :) In a way April is when we come out of hibernation, start planning various events with a fair hope that weather will not stop play, think of various DIY projects - maybe even carry some of them through - and check the finances to see if a Summer holiday will be possibility. While the origins of some of the names of our months are clear ( January, for example, comes from Janus, the Roman god of ‘openings and beginnings’), April is somewhat of a mystery. It may derive from the Latin word ‘aperire’ (‘to open’) in the context of the season when trees and flowers begin to bloom, but it is also possible that April is derived from the Greek or Etruscan goddesses, Aphrodite and Apru. Wet but wonderful! Another Memorable Day this St. Patricks Day in Balbriggan.

New funds for childcare Balbriggan Local Electoral area childcare providers can apply for support from a new national €4m fund, according to local councillor Tony Murphy. “Local crèches, community services and other childcare providers can apply for money for new places, maintenance works and outdoor play areas,” he says. Cllr. Murphy says individual childcare centres can receive funding of up to €50,000 under the 4

2017 Early Years Capital Funding Scheme. The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone described the new fund as part of a plan to “change childcare throughout the country. We must move from having one of the most expensive services in the world to having the best,” she said “However in order to achieve this goal we must continue to build up the infrastructure, in particular in those communities with young populations. I am determined that parents will no longer be forced to turn down work, training or education because of the high cost of childcare.” Childcare providers can receive up to €50,000 under this scheme for major expansions, €20,000 is available to community based services for

maintenance and grants of up to €5,000 are available for outdoor play areas. This fund is in addition to €3m announced earlier in March to support those services for children of school-going age. Tony Murphy

Locallink Fingal, Louth and Meath Local Link provides safe secure and reliable Public Transport services in local and rural areas of Ireland. The aim is to provide safe, reliable and secure bus transport services in Rural Ireland. The mission statement of the original Rural Transport Programme, is ‘to provide a quality nationwide community based public transport system in rural Ireland which responds to local needs’. Local Link’ is the brand name for the organisations delivering the Rural Transport Programme nationally. At a national level, the Rural Transport Programme is managed by the National Transport Authority. In 2017 the National Transport Authority will continue to identify improvements in existing services and developing appropriate new routes based on the budget of €15.9m (includes €1.5m from Department of Social Protection). Over 40 new additional rural transport services are currently being examined by the Authority to be delivered across the State this year. Key features of the new service developments include greater integration with existing public transport services and better linkage of services between and within towns and villages. At a local level, in Fingal, Louth and Meath, the original Rural Transport Programme companies are now pooling their experience, knowledge, resources and competence across their respective counties to deliver excellence in rural public transport services and passenger experience, care and comfort. ‘ In Fingal specifically, two new Locallink services are due to come on stream in mid-April 2017. These are • Balbriggan, Millfield, Naul, Balyboughal, Oldtown, Garristown and onto Ashbourne. • Knocksedan, Swords Manor, Brackenstown Road, Main Street Swords and Pavilions Other proposed routes for the area are also under consideration/development at the moment such as a package of routes centred around the Fingal train stations, accessing tourism sites and local parks. The theme of the initiative is ‘Trains and Tourisim’.

Balbriggan celebrating Harry Clarke On Saturday, February 25, Balbriggan Tourism hosted the first cultural event of the year at the Church of Sts Peter and Paul in Balbriggan. The event, consisting of two parts, was organised in order to celebrate and promote the great art by Harry Clarke whose two stained-glass windows are located in the Church to the left and right of the main altar. Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was described as a genius of his age - a stained-glass artist and illustrator who created over 160 stained-glass windows for religious and commercial commissions, as well as numerous book illustrations and other works. The first part of the event consisted of a talk on the two Balbriggan windows, The Visitation and The Widow’s Son, by the art historian and Harry Clarke scholar, Dr. Nicola Gordon Bowe. Dr. Bowe gave a very detailed and captivating talk about the two Balbriggan windows and the artist who created them. The members of Balbriggan Tourism Committee, chaired by Cllr Tony Murphy, were delighted with such a great turn out on the day. The audience included, among many local dignitaries and other distinguished guests, a curator from RIA, the architectural historian Brendan Grimes, Dr. Margarita Cappock, Head of Collections at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Tony Kiely, DIT School of Hospitality Management and Tourism and Coilin O’Reilly, Fingal County Council Head of Tourism Development. Dr. Bowe’s talk was followed by the unveiling of three full-colour plaques, celebrating the windows which Balbriggan Tourism commissioned and had installed outside the Church. Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Darragh Butler officiated at the plaque unveiling. Balbriggan Tourism Committee have been working on developing a tourism proposition for Balbriggan. One of the key components of Failte Ireland’s tourism campaigns for Ireland is the promotion of cultural tourism. Balbriggan is very fortunate to be the location of these magnificent windows which enhance the town’s appeal to the culturally curious visitor. A set of four postcards depicting images from both of the Harry Clarke Balbriggan windows can be purchased at the offices of Balbriggan Tourism and Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce opposite the courthouse on George’s Square. They are on sale for €1.00 each. You can sign up at http://www.parkrun.ie/register/ and print out your free barcode. Bring this with you and you will be tagged as having completed the event and you will receive your Parkrun time and can check each week for personal bests, etc. Each Parkrun is every Saturday morning at 9.30am and Junior Parkruns at 9.30amevery Sunday morning.

Mayor of Fingal on the run!

Politicians, as a rule, are not noted for their fitness levels. One exception is Councillor Darragh Butler, Mayor of Fingal 2016/17, who has completed all five of the Fingal 10k (Swords) since 2012 and is looking forward to completing a sixth this July. “I’ve never really been fit, so the joke each year is that my training for this year’s event was completing the previous year’s event,” he notes. “Being a Councillor I never made much time for running or exercise outside of this. So for me, Parkruns are an excellent idea and a great opportunity to have something structured. Without Parkrun I would probably go back to doing no exercise at all,” he says. “Back in 2015 I was walking at River Valley Parkrun in Swords at an Operation Transformation event, when someone approached me to tell me about the then new Donabate Parkrun at Newbridge House. “A few months later I completed my first Parkrun in Donabate and to date I’ve completed 11 Donabate Parkruns and 10 River Valley Parkruns and I hope to complete many, many more over the coming months. “I would strongly recommend Parkrun to all. It’s a great way to start your weekend, to possibly blow off a bit of steam after a busy

week at work, or to simply get out and enjoy a bit of exercise with friends and members of your community, whether you want to run, walk or a combination of both. No pressure, just go at your own pace and enjoy yourselves and make new friends from your community along the way. “Please also take the time to volunteer every now and then as these events would not exist without volunteers. In this regard I would like to particularly like to thank Elaine and Sean for Donabate Parkrun and Bryan and his team for River Valley Parkrun. “Fingal County Council have six excellent Parkruns: Porterstown Park; Hartstown Park; Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan; Malahide Castle; Newbridge House, Donabate; and River Valley, Swords. There is also an excellent Junior Parkrun in Rush every Sunday morning that my son Adam loves completing every weekend. Over the course of March, April and May I hope to set up a challenge to complete all six of the Fingal Parkruns and anyone who wants is invited to join me.” You can join up with the Mayor to walk, jog or run at Malahide Castle on Saturday, April 29; Hartstown Park on Saturday, May 13 and at Rivervalley, Swords on Saturday, May 27.

Guide Dogs always plan ahead

North County branches of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind met recently at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan to update volunteers on the work of the organisation. Over 30 interested people attended the event, hosted by the Balbriggan North County Dublin branch and the questions ranged from the breeding of the dogs, to puppy walking to having a driver to assist a guide dog owner attend a school talk. Something fun for everyone at Drogheda Arts Festival 2017 Something fun for everyone at Drogheda Arts Festival 2017 Drogheda Arts Festival (24 April- 1 May) marks the beginning of the summer in our region. For this year’s exciting programme, Louth Contemporary Music Society present a special commission, the world premiere of The Louth Work, by composer James Dillon; there are two Irish Exclusives in the form of Thor and Friends and a Bank Holiday Sunday night DJ Set by Terry Hall, as well as a special rehearsed reading by award winning actor Judith Roddy, of poems by three of the world’s greatest poets of the last 150 years. There will be theatre for both adults and children and special musical performances across many disciplines. Variety will be key. From the sublime (Upstate Theatre Project) to the ridiculous (Fanzini’s Circus Jukebox); from the traditional (Maighread & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill) to the contemporary (Maggie Madden and Sharon Olds); not to mention the classic (Graffiti Classics, Bronte, Bram Stoker). There will be spectacular street performances by the River Boyne and the annual ‘mini festival’ at Beaulieu House & Gardens, and a new short film festival evening & film quiz presided over by the acclaimed actor, Karl Shiels (Fair City). It’s the perfect time to plan a day trip to Drogheda, the cultural capital of the Boyne Valley.

A Red Letter Date for Your Diary

Award-winning author and playwright SP McArdle will be staging her magic history adventure, 1916: The Red-Letter Play, in Naomh Barrog GAA Club on Easter Monday, April 17. The play is adapted from the finale of her magic children’s book ‘The Red-Letter Day’. It was described by The Sunday Independent as one of the Sunday Independent’s best children’s books of 2016, described in their Christmas gift guide as: ‘A brilliantly imaginative romp through key points in Irish history, featuring fun adventures with fascinating people.’ Can time-traveller Jenny the Adventuress and her guide O’Flahertie (who might just be a famous writer!) save the day for the Proclamation of the Irish Republic? A top actress (whose name is under wraps for now) will play the lead role of Jenny the Adventuress and the other main part is O’Flahertie (yes, Oscar Wilde).
