Minister launches Fingal Healthy & Positive Ageing Report

The Minister of State for Communities and the National Drugs Strategy, Catherine Byrne, TD, recently launched the Fingal Healthy & Positive Ageing Indicators Report at a reception in The Atrium of County Hall, Swords. The Report, which is entitled Fingal Healthy & Positive Ageing 2016, was published as part of a Healthy and Positive Ageing Initiative established as a joint programme between the Department of Health, The Atlantic Philanthropies, the HSE and Age Friendly Ireland and as part of the National Positive Ageing Strategy in the Programme for Government. Among the key findings of the Report was that while only 3.4 per cent of people aged 5569 years had great difficulty accessing essential services, the figure rose to 16 per cent for those aged over 70. Almost one in five people over 55 reported that a lack of transport causes difficulty for socialising or essential tasks while 20 per cent of those aged over 70 have difficulty carrying out maintenance or upkeep on their homes. Eighty per cent of those aged 55-69 and 64 per cent of people over 70 say their health is good or very good but 17 per cent currently smoke daily which is higher than the national average 4

of 14 per cent. Over two-thirds of people aged 50+ admitted low levels of physical activity but 82 per cent of people aged 50+ reported high life satisfaction, although almost nine per cent of that group have severe depressive symptoms. More than two thirds of those aged 55+ meet socially with relatives, friends and colleagues at least once a week. However, six per cent meet people socially less than once a month or never. Almost one in five of those aged between 55 and 69 and 18 per cent of those aged 70+ volunteer at least once a month while 17 per cent of people aged 55+ in Fingal said they experienced negative attitudes or behaviour towards them as an older person. Minister Byrne said it was one of the best reports she had ever read and added that the establishment of Age Friendly Alliances and Older Persons’ Councils as part of the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities and Counties Initiative is a very positive development “It is vital that older people are given a place at the table where their concerns and aspirations can be aired and acted on. We are all thankfully living longer now than ever before and the signs are that this trend will continue into the future,” said

Minister Byrne. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “In terms of Age Friendly actions, Fingal is a model of good practice and has followed through on the commitments made when we signed the Dublin Declaration on Age Friendly Cities and Communities in 2011. As a Council, we have championed the Age Friendly initiative and taken the lead on a number of specific measures for older citizens. While the percentage of older people in Fingal is relatively small now it is set to grow rapidly in the next 15 to 20 years and we need to plan and prepare for this. The Fingal Healthy and Positive Ageing Report provides evidence that will assist us in doing this.” The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eithne Loftus, said: “The first five year programme has been completed and the Fingal Age Friendly Alliance has begun the process of developing a new Age Friendly framework for Fingal. Up until now data, specific to older people, was very scarce but now, as a result of this Healthy and Positive Ageing Report, we have data that can and should be used as an aid to help development plans for 2017 and beyond.” Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Minister Coveney of Housing, Planning, Community & Local Government Visits Fingal The Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney, TD, paid a visit to Fingal County Council today (Monday) and met with councillors and staff in a series of meetings. The Minister met with Councillors for over an hour during which he addressed them on his plans for solving the housing crisis through the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan before engaging in a question and answer session with the Council. Earlier he had met with Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid, his Executive Management Team and Senior Executives from the Housing and Community Department. “Both meetings were very constructive and we had an open and constructive exchange of views,” said Mr Reid. “The Minister was very complimentary of the efforts that Fingal County Council is making to address the housing crisis and we updated him on progress to date, what we have planned and what we need to implement those plans.” PHOTO 1: The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, welcomes the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Simon Coveney, TD, to County Hall, Swords.

Irish Guide Dogs Climbing to New Heights

The North County Dublin branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the blind want to thank all who supported our fundraising efforts in 2016 and previous years. Back in September we ran a most successful table quiz in the Milestone Lounge Balbriggan. A young lady who is a guide dog owner from the town Jade McCormack wanted to do a wall climb as a sponsored fundraiser at the guide dog center in Cork. Each person was asked to raise €1,000 but typical of balbriggan branch and its supporters a total of €1,250 was raised through the quiz and other bits to allow jade do the climb. Seven other people who have guide dogs did the climb but our Jade brought in the most money of all. See some pictures attached and of the climb and Jades guide dog Yanni looking on bewildered. The running up to Christmas is always a very busy time for the branch and 2016 was no exception. The branch put out there Christmas cards and calendars through the North County and each premises deserves a sincere word of thanks for supporting us this way. Our local Supervalu and Millfield S.C. allow us to put in a stand each year to sell our Christmas cards, calendars and merchandise. We are very grateful to them for their support as we are to the Skerries Day Care Center, The Rush craft fare in St Maurs GAA club, The parents committee of Balscadden N.S., Flemington Community Center and the organizing committee of “The turning on of the Christmas lights Balbriggan” who also gave us an opportunity to set up a stand at their events. Hampers are always a great draw when doing events like these and so we had three hampers to be won. The Millfield Hamper went to Mary Troy of Fan court Balbriggan, Supervalu Hamper was won by Lorna McKenna Bath road balbriggan and our third Hamper was won by Jeff Virgo of rush. Sincerest thanks to all who helped as volunteers to man the stands, to those of the community who bought something and to the owners of each venue for their support and cooperation with us.

As we begin our 2017 years fundraising which we must do to keep the training of guide dogs for blind people going and assistance dogs for a family who have a child with autism we want to mention three early in the year fundraisers. Poker classic Oldtown House Oldtown Co Dublin Friday night, 20th January. Then on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February the Balbriggan Feis is being held in Naul GAA clubhouse. We will also have a poker night in Whites of Stamullen in early February but the date is not yet confirmed. 2016 Was a Productive Year for Balbriggan Tourism Committee

Balbriggan Tourism, a Committee of representatives from a variety of local organisations chaired by Cllr Tony Murphy, had a busy and productive year in 2016. The Committee meets monthly and its aim is to lobby with Fingal County Council and promote Balbriggan as a desirable tourist location. Balbriggan Tourism also initiates cultural and tourism related projects for the town. Since 2013, Balbriggan has had a tourist office. Initially located in Quay Street, last April the office moved to the more central space on Balbrigganâ€™s Georgeâ€™s Square. The office is currently open five days a week and caters not only to tourists and visitors but also to local residents interested in their town and its surroundings. Balbriggan has much to offer to visitors and residents alike. It is a town of two castles; Ardgillan Castle on its southern boundary and Bremore Castle on its northern edge. A horseshoe-shaped beach with a historical harbour is located in the middle of the town and is a truly unique setting by any standards.

Local News The single most positive news for Balbriggan Tourism and a huge boost for the town is the new Fingal County Council three-year capital programme which singled out several heritage sites across the county for major investment. The long-awaited completion of Bremore Castle came as top priority with the allocation of €2 million in funding. Balbriggan Tourism are very excited about this news as it is a definitive step towards placing Balbriggan firmly on the tourist map. Balbriggan Tourism were instrumental in completing the photographic medallions project in Railway Street. These medallions draw attention towards the town’s most iconic building, the famous textile factory Smyth & Co. who were the makers of fine hosiery for clients from the ranks of European royalty including Queen Victoria. A heritage trail, based on Balbriggan’s idiosyncratic industrial milling and textile manufacturing heritage is now well under way to be completed in 2017. The local Catholic Church boasts original artwork by the internationally acclaimed Irish stainedglass artist Harry Clarke. Balbriggan Tourism commissioned large scale story boards to celebrate the artwork which were on display from September 2016 until the end of the year. A more permanent storyboard project is in the pipeline for 2017. In 2016, Balbriggan became included in the Fáilte Ireland tourism campaign ‘Dublin: A Breath of Fresh Air’ as Dublin’s northernmost coastal village. A suite of promotional material was commissioned by Fingal Tourism in conjunction with this campaign. This affiliation to a major national tourism campaign should benefit Balbriggan immensely. Balbriggan is a real breath of fresh air, minutes from Dublin Airport and conveniently linked with Dublin City by rail. It’s a town with great potential and harnessing this potential is the aim of Balbriggan Tourism. Mayor honours Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, has made a special presentation to the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society to mark their contribution to the centenary celebrations of the Easter 1916 Rising. Members of the Society, along with representatives of the Bremore Castle Local Training Initiative, attended the presentation which took place in the Council Chamber at County Hall, Swords, after the Council’s December meeting. “During 2016, the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society has been a leading light in Fingal’s commemorations, participating in a large number of events, the highlight of which was their participation in ceremonies on Easter Sunday as well as their work in raising the profile of the Fingal Battalion, its leader Thomas Ashe and the Battle of Ashbourne,” said the Mayor. The Mayor also paid tribute to the staff and trainees from the Bremore Castle Local Training Initiative in Balbriggan for the significant part they played in restoring the existing monument at Rath Cross in Ashbourne and completing the long outstanding works, especially relating to the sculptures and detailed stone engraving. Councillors in attendance included Cllr David O’Connor, Cllr

Anne Devitt, Cllr Brian Dennehy, Cllr Joe Newman, Cllr Eoghan O’Brien, Cllr Adrian Henchey, Cllr Anthony Lavin and Cllr Paul Mulville and several of them also paid tribute to the work done during the year by the Society as did the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid. “They really helped us to tell the story of Fingal and Thomas Ashe in particular,” said Mr Reid. “It was a story that many were not fully aware of but there is certainly much more awareness now both within the county and beyond and we look forward to working with them as we celebrate the centenary of other events which occurred between 1917 and 1922.” Accepting the Award on behalf of the Society, its chairman, Noel McAllister, thanked the Mayor, his predecessor, Cllr David O’Connor, and Fingal County Council for their support. “It is a great story and was the only successful engagement of the Rising. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the death of Thomas Ashe and we will continue our work to have him recognised as nationally as a leader of the 1916 Rising,” said Mr McAllister, who also paid tribute to the members of the Society for their work over the last few years.

Fingal’s 1916 Story Now on Film

The story of Fingal’s involvement in the 1916 Easter Rising is now on film and Fingal County Council hosted a successful premiere of the docudrama Fingal’s Finest last month, in the Draíocht Arts Centre. The film was created and produced by Tile Media and was co-sponsored by Fingal County Council as part of its 1916 Commemoration Programme. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, and the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, were joined by elected representatives, relatives and friends of the men and women of Fingal who took part in the events of 1916 gathered in Draíocht’s theatre for the first public viewing of the film which was shot in various locations around the county during the year. Fingal’s Finest is the story of the Fifth Battalion, Dublin Brigade of Irish Volunteers, and their role in the 1916 Rising. The narrative for the film is largely driven by the witness statements of those involved, including Irish Volunteers Joseph Lawless

It is hoped that the film will be seen by as many people as possible across the country. It will form part of Fingal County Council’s 1916 Centenary Legacy Collection, which will be available through our Libraries, Local Studies and Archives collections. Mr Reid said that Council was delighted to have been involved in the project. “It was important to us in Fingal that we find a fresh way to tell this unique story to a new audience of younger people. I think that Fingal’s Finest will enable us to do just that, keeping the memory of the achievements of the Fifth Battalion and the Fingal Brigade alive for future generations,” said Mr Reid. The Mayor added that the film was an excellent way to ensure

that those from Fingal who were involved in the Easter Rising are not forgotten. “I think this film is a great way of acknowledging the men and women of Fingal who made a huge and lasting contribution to who we are and what we have become as a result of their efforts in the events of 1916. Is Cuimhin Linn, We Remember,” said Cllr Butler. Colin Farrell of Tile Media, who wrote and directed the film said it was a great opportunity to tell a story that is not known by people outside of Fingal. “We were delighted to be asked by Fingal County Council to work with them in telling the story of the Fifth Fingal Battalion of the Irish Volunteers. Filmmakers are always on the lookout for powerful, untold stories and this was one of them. It may be well known to many of the people of Fingal, and by historians, but is largely unknown by most of the rest of the population,” said Mr Farrell. Details regarding future screenings of Fingal’s Finest will be announced at a later date.

BiaBites of Energy!!! Ingredients • Soak 20 pieces of various dried fruit in water over night (such as dates, prunes, figs). They will soak up the water and become nice, plump and juicy! • 2 tbsp 100% cocoa powder • 100g oats • 100g Nuts and seeds (check if school is allowed nuts/seeds!) • 2 tbsp natural liquid sweetener eg. honey/ maple syrup/agave syrup/date syrup • For decorating: Desiccated coconut/ melted dark chocolate/ cocoa powder/nibs

My BiaBites recipe below is a great way to use up any extra festive nibbles lying around and put them to good use in the lunchbox as a nice energy blast far from the past!!! When I make these in schools, students are always amazed at how quick and easy they are to make and how delicious but nutritious they are to eat! Dried fruits make these bites sweet and along with a small amount of natural sweetener, there is no need for adding sugar. Dark dried fruits are also quite nutritious as they contain valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium which are quite important for energy and metabolism. The oats are full of soluble fibre and B vitamins helping to fill us up and slowly release energy over time. The nuts and seeds contribute healthy fats and protein to help stabilise our blood sugars and curb our appetite. 100% cocoa powder is antioxidant and nutrient rich with iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and flavonoids. It also has energy and mood boosting effects due to its natural caffeine and theobromine content. -Blitz the nuts/seeds in a blender until they become quite fine/powdery. Remove. -Blitz the dried fruit adding water as required to make a thick paste. -Add the nuts/seeds and remaining ingredients to the dried fruit paste and mix together. Add water teaspoon by teaspoon if the mixture is too dry. -When the ingredients are starting to stick together, dampen your hands and roll about a tablespoon of the mixture with your fingers and palm to form bite sized balls of energy! -Roll the balls in the topping of your choice and chill them in the freezer/fridge for an hour before eating.....if you can resist that long!
