Editor’s Note October sees yet another Budget in which the Government reminds us that we have never had it so good while dripping deeper into our pockets. And, of course, you can’t compare Irish taxation with anywhere else because, as is pointed out in Dáil Éireann on a regular bases, Ireland is different! It’s a difference that becomes harder to explain as our towns and buildings become ever more identical with anywhere else in Europe. When national identity is reduced to marketing concepts of the “Ancient East” and the nonsensical “Wild Atlantic Way.” And when our taxation regime is actually basically the same as many other countries. In reality, people are people the world over and political incompetence is a feature of most democracies. But, when it comes to elections we get to chose who runs the country, not what they will do when they get into power. We don’t get a vote on taxation and even though the Water Charges fiasco has proved there are limits it is a fact that new areas of taxation are constantly being explored. As the nights draw in and the weather gets worse in the lead into Winter at least we can draw comfort from the fact that taxation will continue to provide an endless topic of conversation. On the bright side we have the October Bank Holiday weekend to look forward to at the end of the month. Enjoy it because it’s the last one before Christmas!

Celebrate National Potato Day with Spuds and Family Fun! Country Crest and Keoghs are hosting ‘Spud Fest’, a free family fun day at Newbridge House. The free, family fun day is being hosted by local farming businesses, Country Crest and Keoghs Farm, in celebration of Ireland’s greatest staple food – the potato! Some of the exciting activities on the day will include potato sack racing, tug-o-war, face painting, bouncy castles, arts & crafts, traditional lawn games, vintage tractors, music and more. Guests will especially enjoy the farm-fresh food fare being provided by the event sponsors, with lots of delicious spud-based meals and crisps being served. A big thank you to Fingal County Council for helping to fund this event.

Fingal scores well in latest Litter results
In excellent news for Fingal the areas of Dublin Airport & Environs and Balbriggan are featured in the 16 top-tier towns deemed “Cleaner than European Norms” , the highest category, in the latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). Dublin Airport Environs has come in second place which is a huge accomplishment given that the Dublin Airport Environs were found to be a “Litter Blackspot” when first surveyed 5 years ago. Balbriggan was awarded 13th place in the league - a superb result for Balbriggan on its return to the Anti-Litter
League. Speaking about the national results Conor Horgan of IBAL said. “Across the board we have seen improvements. The news is all the more positive given the importance of how we present our country over the summer months, when we attract over 40% of our visitors. Also satisfying is the pristine state of the roads around Dublin Airport, which help form a first impression for many of these visitors.” The report on Dublin Airport Environs states that “For visitors arriving at Dublin Airport, the
impression they gain should be a positive one, based on this survey” and goes on to state that many of the airport environs sites were pretty busy with traffic but this didn’t impact in any negative way on the litter situation, and that “all in all, this was a top ranking site throughout.” The Balbriggan report praised the excellent impression on the approaches to Balbriggan, the well maintained environment and cleanliness in the town including the Railway Station and the Beach. Ardgillan Castle & Demesne was singled out for praise in the report stating “If a site ever deserved a Grade A+ this would definitely have to be one of the top contenders! It is a wonderful amenity which is clearly very well respected by the users and lovingly tended by those responsible for the maintenance - well done to all concerned.” In response to the news Paul Reid, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said “The inclusion of two Fingal locations in the latest IBAL survey demonstrates clearly the ongoing commitment of Fingal County Council in the fight against litter. The success in this year’s survey is testament to the dedication and hard work of the Operations Cleansing Crews and Council Staff who strive to ensure Fingal is an attractive place to live, work and visit. I would like to also commend the excellent work being done by the local community and tidy towns groups”

A Heritage of Fine Hosiery There was a packed attendance in the Bracken Court Hotel recently for the Balbriggan Tourism National Heritage Week talk intriguingly titled ‘Stockings for the Queen’. The presenter, Dr David Sorensen focused his entertaining presentation on the history of hosiery in the town of Balbriggan. The very fine craftsmanship of Balbriggan’s hosiers was demonstrated in the granting of royal warrants for the supply of stockings to Queen Victoria by Smyth & Co, along with the firm of Henry Appleyard. While this area became dominated by one particular enterprise - Smyth & Co., some members of the audience were surprised to learn of the number of smaller hosiery concerns that plied their trade in Balbriggan from the 1800s onwards. Some newcomers to the town expressed delight in learning that the name of the town had become, itself, a trademark, to be used only for very fine hosiery made in the town of Balbriggan. One particular hosier, Mr Thomas Mangan of Smyth & Co., who had made stockings for the Queen for over 60 years was granted special recognition in 1897, by a presentation of a signed portrait of Her Majesty, in Balbriggan Courthouse. Great interest was shown by those attending the talk in the original memorabilia from Smyth’s factory on display on the night (kindly loaned by Joe Curtis and Jenny Lynch) which included original examples of fine silk stockings and delicate handmade embroidery from the 1880s. David Sorensen and Petra Skyvova, the organisers of this event, are hopeful that they will be able to bring more similar events focusing on the interesting aspects of Balbriggan heritage to the local audience in the future. The evening finished with the launch of Balbriggan Heritage Trail brochure, a brief illustrated history of Balbriggan. This brochure will also act as the guide to the forthcoming Balbriggan Heritage Trail information boards which will be put in place in the town in the near future. The brochure can be collected free of charge in Balbriggan Tourist office on George’s Square.

TRICK OR TREAT ‘Fangtastic’ recipes for Halloween
It’s that time of year again. But we don’t have to wait until October 31 to sink our teeth into some ‘Fangtastic’ foods. Try out these WICKED ideas to ‘creep’ the fun into every bloody meal!

160g cooked beetroot er 20 dates, soaked in a little wat r flou fine a 100g oats, blitzed into 100g almond flour

Method:
1. Pre-heat oven to 180’c. 2. Blitz up beetroot and dates in a blender. Scrape into a mixing bowl. • 3. Add the blitzed up oats and almond flour and mix until blended together. • 4. Place into bun

cases and pop in the oven for 20-25minutes at 180’c. • 5. For the icing: Scoop out and mash the avocado in a bowl, discarding the seed in the middle. • Mix the protein powder in until well blended. Allow buns to cool first before icing.
