Editor’s Note August has a tendency to fly by, particularly where children are concerned. School bells will soon be ringing so it is time to shift into high gear to get kids ready. It’s time to consider turning off the television and limiting computer time - soon enough it will be time for homework so it makes sense to put some order on the evenings. Ditto for bedtime! Kids are often too busy playing to recognize that they are tired. Putting them to bed earlier may not make you the most popular parent, but their growing bodies will thank you, especially with the earlier wake up time! Wake your kids up at what will be their regular morning wake-up time for school. And put away the sugary cereals and make a healthy breakfast part of your daily habit. Buying school supplies like backpacks, binders, and pencil cases holds a certain magic for getting kids excited about hearing the school bell ring again. Start eating lunch at the same time as the school does. You can easily help your child’s stomach get on a schedule so that little bellies don’t grumble while they are in a classroom. You want them focused on learning, not on their hunger.

Fingal County Council receives unique Famine Travel Box Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler and Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid pictured with Michael Blanch, Chief Executive of the Committee for the Commemoration of Irish Famine Victims and Mark O’Brien, Assistant Chief Officer, Irish Prison Service as well as councillors who attended the presentation of a Famine Travel Box in The Atrium at County Hall, Swords.

Cllr Darragh Butler’s last function as Mayor of Fingal was to receive a Famine Travel Box on behalf of Fingal County Council. The beautifully crafted wooden box is a replica of the travel boxes which were given to women who went to Australia from workhouses all the country to seek new opportunities. The travel box would have contained all of the women’s worldly possessions including clothing made and paid for by the Poor Law Unions. The box is the result of collaboration between the Committee for the Commemoration of Irish Famine Victims and the Irish Prison Service. Michael Blanch, Chief Executive of the CCIFV and Mark O’Brien, Assistant Chief Officer, Irish Prison Service presented the box to the outgoing mayor at a reception in The Atrium at County Hall, Swords. The box presented to Fingal commemorates women who travelled to Australia from Balrothery Workhouse and is an interpretation of the original travel box. Cllr Darragh Butler said: “It is a great honour for Fingal County Council to receive one of these unique boxes, particularly as our own tells the story of some of the women who left Balrothery Workhouse for Australia during the famine. It is a novel way of telling their story.” The first box was completed in September 2015 and only six are made each year. Boxes have been presented to facilities in Ireland, Australia and America with the stipulation that they must be put on public display. A plan to display the box in Fingal’s ten libraries is currently being drawn up. 4

New law protects life-saving gear

Local Councillor Darragh Butler has welcomed new legislation that will bring in tough penalties for anyone who steals or damage life-saving equipment such as defibrillators and lifebuoys. The Life Saving Equipment Bill 2017 imposes strict new penalties, including a fine of up to €50,000 and a jail term of up to 5 years for anyone convicted of interfering with life-saving equipment. Senator Dr. Keith Swanick, sponsor of the bill, noted that “research from the Irish Heart Foundation reveals that around 13 people die every day from cardiac arrest. Defibrillators are vital in improving survival rates and we must ensure that these devices are protected against vandals. “Similarly, a number of County Councils have reported problems with life rings and lifebuoys going missing at lakes, rivers and beaches. Lives are being unnecessarily lost as a result of people stealing or interfering with these essential pieces of life-saving equipment.” Cllr. Butler added that “we need to do all that we can to ensure that life saving equipment such as defibrillators and lifebuoys are respected and protected and that those to steal, damage or vandalise such equipment get severely punished with very strict penalties. Zero-tolerance is the correct approach to vandalism theft, especially in this regard and I really hope to see this legislation progress and be implemented.

“When I got elected for the first time in May 2014”, says Cllr Tony Murphy, “many people asked me to get the grass cut regularly on Balbriggan Beachfront. I would have thought this was an easy piece of work and a simple wish to fulfil.

“To my frustration and disappointment, I have discovered, that there is no resolve in Fingal County Council to deliver a structured maintenance programme for Balbriggan Beach on an annual basis.” “Year on year, there are issues with grass

cutting on Balbriggan Front Strand, the town’s main beach, and those responsible seem to avoid the issues. This is the result of joint responsibility between Irish Rail, who are in charge of the upper embankment alongside the railway line, and Fingal County Council, who are responsible for the maintenance of the lower embankment. “Balbriggan Front Strand is a lovely beach used by many people and a great leisure amenity which should be one of our best tourism attractions”, says cllr. Murphy. “If Fingal County Council do not have the workforce to support the grass cutting on the embankments, there are contractors who are capable of delivering a service to maintain the beach area to a standard worthy of the people of Balbriggan.” “I am calling on Fingal County Council to initiate and deliver a programme of works that includes the cutting of the grass on both embankments on a regular basis along with the consideration to redesign the beach area through a public consultation process to make Balbriggan Beach a place the town and Fingal can be truly proud of ”, says Murphy.

Once again the Flavours of Fingal was a big success and this year it was a free event with a reasonable €5 parking fee. A fun weekend for all the family, it started on Friday evening with live music, followed by the major event on Saturday and Sunday within the grounds of Newbridge House. Now in its sixth year, Fingal County Council, Fingal Farmers

Group and Fingal Tourism got together to create family entertainment. The best part was the kids area with big inflatable bouncy castles, my kids had a ball. We treated the family to donuts and coffee from one of the many vendors dotted around the place. To keep the children entertained there was an arts and crafts table and also face painting which went down a treat. Just

beyond the inflatable area was the Supermilk Wild Air run. For those of you interested in cars and tractors, the Flavours had Vintage cars and many tractors on show. There was an agricultural display of livestock and many equestrian shows and competitions. In the courtyard area, a stage was set up and Cobbe’s café were busy serving teas and coffees to customers. As the family strolled around the walled gardens it was great to see the many stalls selling their arts and crafts. In order to cool down on a hot summer’s day, a craft beer village were selling their selection of beers. The whole weekend combined the sights and sounds of a traditional show with a fantastic family and food experience. Woolly Wards petting farm arrived to the delight of the children in the big village barn and everyone loved the sheep dog trials as well as the magic shows and living history displays. Within the walled gardens celebrity chefs got to work with cookery demonstrations. Just beyond the House there was a Great War Society World War display and real live Viking re-enactments as well as jousting and Falconry displays. A World War hospital and soldiers and tanks were on display, I even got to hold a war pistol. With so much to do and see, the Flavours of Fingal was a great weekend for all the family.

Plaque honours a Balbriggan veteran On Saturday July 15th Balbriggan & District Historical Society hosted a Commemoration and plaque unveiling in mid July in honour of Terence Mc Mahon from Balbriggan who took part in the Siege of Jadotville in the Congo in 1961. The heroic efforts of the 156 soldiers of the 35th Battalion UN forces who held out against an opposition of 3,000 has only recently been acknowledged. The day began with a Commemorative Mass at St. Peter & Paul’s Church. The celebrantm Fr. Eugene Taaffe PP, was assisted by Fr. Liam Cuffe, son of Jadotville veteran Sgt. Geoffrey Cuffe. An Irish United Nations Veterans Association Colour party was in attendance. After Mass there was a parade to George’s Square in the company of Mc Mahon family members. St. Patrick’s Brass & Reed Band. Community Groups and Jadotville veterans. Following speeches a Commemorative Plaque was unveiled by Mayor of Fingal Councillor Mary McCamley with Irish Defence Forces in attendance.

The sun defiantly was shining on recently when the Phoenix Baton Twirlers recently attended the Dublin open competition which was hosted by Northern Star Twirlers in association with the BTSAI (Baton Twirling sports association of Ireland). This year the competition included visiting clubs from the ABTI - a separate branch of Baton Twirling Phoenix Baton Twirlers entered 12 athletes into the competition ranging in ages from 3 years to 9 years with all athletes coming home with silverware. Ingredients • 600g Meat of your choice cut into pieces such as: chicken, beef, pork or tofu • Vegetables of your choice such as: Red onion, peppers, courgette, mushrooms • 1 tin coconut milk • 4 tablespoons smooth peanut butter • 2 tablespoons curry paste • Juice of 1 lime • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 5 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped finely • About 5cm ginger, peeled and chopped finely • Small wooden skewers Tip: use whole coconut milk as the light versions mainly consist of water and won’t give the nice creamy, smooth consistency for the Satay sauce! “The smell of BBQ in the air just tastes of Summer but if you haven’t managed to see much of the BBQ so far, maybe this recipe will inspire you to heat up the grill before the weather starts to chill!! This dish is relatively easy and definitely one that the whole family could take pride in! You will probably have most of these ingredients and you will be able to use them up in so many other recipes. Mix the ginger, garlic, curry paste, peanut butter, soy sauce, honey and lime juice together. 2. Stir coconut milk into the mixture bit by bit and mix well to create a creamy smooth consistency. 3. Add the meat/tofu and chopped vegetables to 2/3 of the satay mix. Keep the other 1/3 of the satay as a dipping sauce! 4.Leave the mixture to marinate for up to 3 hours in the fridge. 5. Thread the meat/tofu and vegetables onto the skewers. 6. Grill the skewers for approximately 15 minutes, turning occasionally. Dip into the sauce saved from earlier. 7. Heat any leftover mixture on a pan until the meat and veg is cooked and serve with rice, noodles or oriental salad.
