Month of Goodbye to miserable, dreary January. Hello February; month of romance! But, if like us, you have children and limited access to babysitters for Valentine’s day you may not be able to get out for a night on the town. Don’t worry, with a little planning you can have a romantic night at home. First tip is to feed the children separately. Give them dinner early and set them up in front of a movie with popcorn and the promise of an ice-pop if they are quiet for a while. Then set the table with candles, linens and wine and enjoy a quiet dinner for two with dimmed lights and soft music. Why not play a special song after dinner and have a dance around the kitchen? Last year we waltzed to the first dance song from our wedding! You don’t have to go out for romance, you just need to set the atmosphere with a little imagination. And if you are on a budget, you can pick up Valentine’s cards, candles and heart shaped decorations in Dealz for 1.50. If you really want a wow factor and a fabulous night out, check out Scholars TownHouse Hotel in Drogheda. They give gorgeous goody bags to the ladies on Valentine’s night, making it that little bit more special. And their cocktails are divine. Whatever you get up to, remember it’s not about big cards and expensive presents. It’s the thought that counts. For me, I am happiest if my husband runs me a bubble bath, gives me a glass of wine and magazine and keeps the children downstairs for an hour, so I can have some peace and quiet! Exciting times ahead for the NCBI charity shop in Balbriggan

NCBI’s charity shop on 18 Drogheda Street (effectively Main Street), Balbriggan, will celebrate its official opening on February 24th. In the meantime the shop is open for business and looking for your donation of clothing, books and other items. All funds raised through the shop support the National Council for the Blind’s services locally, with 7,200 people with sight loss in the Dublin. NCBI must raise €4 out of every €10 it spends on services. Its 89 charity shops around the country make a vital contribution to its fundraising efforts, according to shop manager Bernie Davis. The Charity shops provide great volunteering opportunities and allows for people to get involved in their local community. Of course there are plenty of bargains to be had as well, with many new or unused items on sale, as well as top quality second hand items. Bernie is determined to get the whole community of Balbriggan involved. As well as our official opening on February 24th, to which everyone is invited, we will be holding a fashion show in the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan. The fashion show will showcase the clothing, handbags, jewellery and shoes which are available in the shop. Further details will all be revealed very soon. “Keep an eye on our NCBI Balbriggan Facebook page, phone the shop or drop in to us for any information closer to the time” said Bernie. NCBI is Ireland’s national charity working for the rising number of people affected by sight loss. The charity’s practical and emotional advice and supports help 8,000 people and their families face their futures with confidence every year. NCBI’s services include emotional support and counselling, low vision solutions like magnifiers, assistive technology advice and training, rehabilitation training (including independent living skills and using a long cane), a large print, audio and Braille library. The organisation also has an online shop with lots of practical solutions. The NCBI charity shop welcomes donations of your unwanted clothing and other items. Fingal artworks are texaco calendar choice An artwork by 16-year old Fingal student Wiktoria Anna Witkowska from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan, has been chosen to illustrate the 2017 Texaco Children’s Art Calendar. One of 13 chosen to illustrate the publication, Wiktoria’s piece, entitled ‘The Face’, appeared during the month of December and will be seen in thousands of homes throughout Ireland in 2017. Winning second prize in category A of the 2016 competition, it was one of a number said by a competition adjudicator to perfectly reflect the incredible talent and imagination of children and the essential role played by schools who encourage and inspire their students through art education. Another Fingal student – Nicole Halpin (13) from Malahide Community School – was also chosen. Her work, entitled ‘Love Is...’ can be seen reproduced in the month of February. Over recent months, their works have featured in exhibitions held in Belfast, Drogheda and Dublin.

Event dedicated to the art of Harry Clarke to be held in Balbriggan

On Saturday 25th February at 2pm, Balbriggan Tourism will hold their first event of the year dedicated to the art of Harry Clarke (1889-1931). The work of this world renowned Irish artist is represented in the local church of Sts Peter & Paul in Balbriggan by two exceptionally beautiful stained-glass windows, The Visitation and The Widowâ€™s Son. There will be a lecture in the Church of Sts Peter & Paul delivered by Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe, followed by the launch of permanent large-scale storyboards dedicated to the two Balbriggan stained-glass windows outside the Church of St Peter & Paul. Dr. Nicola Gordon Bowe is Associate Fellow at the Faculty of Visual Culture, National College 10 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-FEBRUARY

of Art and Design in Dublin; Visiting Professor, School of Art and Design Research Institute at the University of Ulster; and Honorary Research Fellow, University of Wales. She has published and lectured widely on aspects of the early twentieth century Arts and Crafts Movement and the Celtic Revival. Her most recent publications include a revised and updated edition of her seminal biography Harry Clarke: The Life and Work, and a biography of Ulster-born stained glass and graphic artist Wilhelmina Geddes, published by The Four Courts Press, Dublin in 2015. The BEaT Centre in Balbriggan will host an open day on Tuesday 7th March for companies considering locating in one of Fingal’s 4 Enterprise Centres. They will also offer free appointments to meet with one of their business advisors to talk through any business challenges you might be facing.

Ingredients • 200g Kale • 1/2 tablespoon rapeseed/olive/coconut oil • Juice from 1/2 lemon/ lime 1/2 teaspoon each of a mix of herbs and spices such as chilli powder/cayenne pepper/smoked paprika.... Tip: If you have a dressing at home such as chilli & lime or basil & garlic, you could also use 1-2 tablespoons of this instead of making your own dressing. 12 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-FEBRUARY

Method “Kale....many of us consume it in juices, salads or the traditional Irish ‘colcannon’. But do you know just how nutritionally good kale is and how it can be eaten as a much healthier alternative to standard potato crisps? Kale has a rich iron and vitamin B12 content, both really essential for our energy, alertness, drive and focus in daily tasks. Kale contains several different flavonoids so it is boasting with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Not to mention its high calcium, vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin A content. It is heart healthy, high in fibre and health promoting. Indeed with all these nutrients we could refer to it as the ‘50 shades of kale’!!! To maximise the nutritional benefits of kale such as the absorption of its calcium and iron content, try combine it with a food rich in vitamin C such as other vegetables like peppers, potatoes, other leafy greens or fruit such as oranges, kiwi or a squeeze of lemon/lime juice. Research also shows that absorption of fat soluble vitamins- A, D, E and K can be aided by combining foods rich in these vitamins with a small amount of healthy fats such as rapeseed or olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, oily fish. In my recipe below I use a splendid mix of healthy fats and vitamin C to make my kale crisps CRAZILY NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS!!. ENJOY!

50 Shades of Kale coming your way: 1. Preheat oven to 150’c. 2. Rip the kale up into large leaves with your hands by removing the stalks. (Throw the stalks into a juice or other recipe. DO NOT WASTE OR YOU WONT BE GETTING YOUR 50 SHADES OF KALE!!) 3. Make the dressing by mixing your chosen oil with juice and herbs/spices. 4. Toss the kale in a large mixing bowl with your dressing. It is important to do this in a mixing bowl rather than on the baking tray to ensure the leaves get covered evenly. 5. Spread the kale pieces onto a baking tray (use a baking sheet/parchment paper to prevent burning). Ensure the kale pieces are not overcrowding so that they all get a fair share of crisping! 6. Bake at 120’c for 15 minutes. Turn them over and bake for another 10-15 minutes until crisp! They will shrink and shrivel and the sooner they are eaten the crispier they will be...SO CRUNCH THE KALE AWAY!!!! Noticeboard & Parish News Friends of Autism & ADHD ASSESSMENTS Friends of Autism & ADHD are delighted to be in a position to be able to fund a number of assessments for young people with possible Autism and or ADD/ ADHD. These assessments will consist of an educational assessment by Clinical Educational Psychologist. Dr Ann Prosser, Psy.D. ,a licensed Certified Clinical Psychologist. Applications from schools are not accepted without written parental consent. Along with the assessment there will be the support of our Advocacy worker, Ms.Bernie Hagan. Bernie will be able to meet with parents/carers to discuss the reports and will assist in any way she can in sourcing the necessary supports required for the child. These assessments will be fully funded by Friends of Autism/ADHD.. Please note we do not receive any state funding whatsoever. These assessments are a direct result of the amazing work of the staff and volunteers of Friends Of Autism & ADHD and to those who donate to Friends Of Autism &ADHD. We are so grateful to all for their generosity. It is regrettable but places for these assessments are limited. First preference will be given to young people who have not already received an assessment from any other source.
