Between Mother’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Easter and Confirmations, there was barely a chance to draw breath with one big event taking place after the other. The sun shone brilliantly on the Balbriggan Parade and it was great to see so many locals out and about with their children enjoying the day. Well done to the many organisers and community groups who took part in this very special year. After the clock went forward an hour we can now indulge in the bright evenings again. Remember Us closer to realising dream

A Balbriggan-based social group for young people and adults with special needs, has moved a giant step forward in realising its dream of having a place to call home. Remember Us recently received the keys to its new premises at Balbriggan Retail Park and held a special evening to mark the occasion and thank patrons, sponsors and everyone else associated with the ambitious project. The race is well and truly on now to raise sufficient funds to fit out the space so that members can move in. Nora Roban, founder/coordinator of Remember Us, told Balbriggan Local: “We are looking to the community of North Fingal to help us make this base a home.

Local News “If everyone chips in, truly magical things can happen. We held an open day recently for local business, fundraising partners, TDs, councillors, families and volunteers, to showcase our new base and launched Phase 2 of our fundraising campaign - to fit it out. “We started two years ago with a target of €600k and to date have raised €400k. We still have to fundraise another €200k to get it fitted out.” When completed, the premises will comprise a sports hall, a sensory room, which is vitally important for members who have autism, a games room, which will be developed into a youth café for teen and adult members; activity rooms, to run various programmes and set up a support group for parents of newly diagnosed children with special needs and a parent/toddler group; and an office, storage and kitchen. Through Balbriggan Local, Ms Roban would like to say a massive thank you to all those who gave donations over the past few years and on the Open Day. Profile of some of the Creatives at BCQ Ann Marie Bohan is one of the founding members of Balbriggan Creative Quarter. Specialising in German and freelancing as a translator, editor and proofreader since 1999, Ann Marie has built a strong reputation in multilingual services as a person who always meets deadlines. Dorothy Fletcher Bentley of FLETCHER BENTLEY IT & Design.

Dorothy Fletcher Bentley is also one of the founding members of Balbriggan Creative Quarter and has an eclectic set of skills. She is a parttime jewellery designer with her own range of bespoke, handcrafted jewellery in precious metals.

Jewellery making started off as a fun hobby that quickly became an online business selling internationally. When not making jewellery Dorothy’s main career is in Website and Graphic Design. Radek Zemlicka relocated his pottery workshop to Drogheda Street, Balbriggan at the end of last year and plans the opening of a new shop at the front of his studio in May. Radek works with both porcelain and stoneware and supplies, through major wholesale catering supplier, numerous restaurants and cafes in Ireland for which he also makes bespoke orders and commissions. Balbriggan Men’s Shed wins parade award Balbriggan Men’s Shed won the Best Community Group award in the town’s annual St Patrick’s Day Parade. The Shed was established in 2015 to provide a dedicated, friendly and welcoming place where men can come together and undertake a variety of mutually agreed activities. The Shed entered a float which included a handmade oversized timber beach chair constructed by the members. The chair is the first major project undertaken by members since the Shed was formally opened. The chair, christened the Bremore Chair, is a local version of the world famous Adirondack chair which was first created by Thomas Lee in the Adirondack mountain region of New York State, USA around 1903. According to legend, Lee created several prototypes for chairs made out of just 11 pieces of knot-free wood, all from the same tree. His family — all 22 of them — tested each chair, and ultimately decided upon the gentle recline and wide armrests of what we now know as the Adirondack chair. The chair will be on view in the Balbriggan Tidy Towns exhibition of art from waste materials, at Millfield Shopping Centre on Saturday, April 2. Balbriggan Men’s Shed is open to all men regardless of age, background or ability where new skills can be learned or old skills developed. New members are always welcome.

Drogheda Arts Festival programme announced The 12th Drogheda Arts Festival, which will take place from April 25 to May 2, is developed especially by a committed festival programme team from Drogheda and the Boyne Valley. The first festival of the summer swings into action with a diverse programme across all of the arts which brings in critically acclaimed local and international artists. There is a particular emphasis on family and participation as Drogheda welcomes young and old into its historic streets and buildings for new experiences, serious engagement, fun and

Balbriggan children raise flags on Proclamation Day Thousands of schoolchildren all over the country, including a large number in Balbriggan, took part in Proclamation Day on March 15. Every school was invited to share the results of their Proclamation for a New Generation and all other creative projects relating to 1916. Proclamation Day was one of the flagship initiatives of the State commemoration programme for the Easter Rising. Pupils at the schools all raised the Irish flag and read the Proclamation in separate ceremonies which have been months in the preparation. All the primary schools in the country received their copies of the Proclamation and the national flag from members of the Defence Forces over the last six months. The secondary schools received theirs at a ceremony in Croke Park. The reading of the Proclamation was followed by a sharing of each school’s Proclamation for a New Generation, which sets out the vision and

Country Crest Recipes

Serves 4 Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

Beef and Vegetable Skewers

80ml olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 80ml lime juice 1Ž2 tsp chilli flakes 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tbsp Chili Powder 1 tsp salt 1Ž2 tsp black pepper 900g Country Crest beef sirloin or beef round, cut into 3cm cubes 1 x 500g Country Crest Microwaveable Steam Pack Potatoes 3 peppers (one each of red, green and yellow/orange), cut into 3cm cubes 1 large red onion, cut into cubes

Method

1. Stir together the first eight ingredients until combined. 2. Place the beef cubes into a small dish and pour over the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. 3. Shortly before removing the beef, cook the Country Crest potatoes in the microwave for seven minutes (the potatoes should not be completely cooked through). When cool enough to handle, slice the potatoes in half 4. Thread the beef, peppers, onion and potatoes onto metal skewers in alternating patterns. Drizzle over a bit of oil until coated. 5. Heat a barbecue to a medium-high heat and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until the vegetables are tender and the beef is cooked to your liking Contact us: 085 2881804 / 0872020234

Animal Matters

Puppy Socialising Start young. As soon as your new puppy joins the family it’s time to get him/her socialising with other dogs in the house and all family members. It’s fine to socialise your new puppy with any dogs in the house once all the dogs are up to date on their vaccinations and worming treatment. So this is something to do before the new addition arrives. Stay with the puppy for the first one or two times they meet your dogs to make sure they have no aggression towards the new member of the family. Once they begin playing and look comfortable around each other then they are fine to leave alone, but only then. Be positive. Always stay positive when socialising and training your puppy. Your puppy will be happy if you are happy. For example when your puppy meets another dog, don’t react by suddenly pulling your puppy away. This will startle your puppy and make him/her think meeting other dogs is a bad experience. Instead stay calm approaching the other dog, talk to both dogs and praise both dogs when they meet. Let them smell each other. This is a very important part of being a dog, exploring their surroundings and greeting other dogs. As much as possible. I understand this isn’t possible until they have had their second injection, but up to that point as much play at home with all family and other pets is possible. Then once they have their second injection a week later they are allowed out on walks and allowed socialise with other dogs. This is the best time to start going to to dog parks, puppy parties and other areas where your puppy can meet as many dogs as they can, all differrent shapes and sizes as well is important Puppy Parties. Most veterinary clinics run puppy parties (please contact your local veterinary clinic for more information). These are classes where you can bring your puppy, once they have had their puppy injections, to meet other puppies and for each owner to ask vet nurses any questions about training or veterinary advise as well.

These classes are usually 1-2 hours long. Again all veterinary clinics are different so contact your local vets and ask the nurse about them.

Family Memorabilia Day held in Balbriggan

Fingal County Council recently hosted a special event at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan as part of its Centenary Programme for 1916. The Family Memorabilia Day was an opportunity for families with a connection to Fingal to bring letters, medals, photos, other precious items and memories related to the revolutionary period 1915-1923 to be catalogued and digitised in order to unearth and make available the hidden histories relating to this pivotal period in Irish history. Historical experts, book sellers and genealogists were on hand to give advice and to digitally photograph the material which will be used in time to develop an online resource. The Family Memorabilia Day was part of Fingal County Council’s Centenary Programme, which will see over 50 lectures, film screenings, performances, re-enactments, talks and exhibitions cumulate in a special Commemorative Day in Swords on Sunday, April 24. On the day, there were screenings of ‘A Terrible Beauty’, a documentary film which takes a unique look at the events of Easter Week 1916 in Dublin. 16 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-APRIL
