A Season of Family, Community and Christmas Spirit As the winter sets in Fingal, bringing crisp mornings, shorter days and that all too familiar chill, it brings a growing sense of excitement in the air in our towns and villages with preparations for Christmas beginning to take shape! From Swords to Balbriggan; Malahide to Rush, and the many villages in between, Fingal begins to take on a special glow at this time of year. Shop windows sparkle, Christmas lights brighten our streets, and local businesses prepare for the busiest season on the calendar. Community groups, volunteers and local organisations are already working behind the scenes to make the coming weeks memorable for residents of all ages. For many, Christmas means welcoming loved ones home, sharing a meal around the table and creating memories that will last long after the decorations have been packed away. For children, it is a time of wonder and anticipation; for older generations, an opportunity to share traditions and stories that

connect families across the years. Remembering those who may find this season difficult is also of equal importance. Loneliness, financial pressures and the loss of loved ones can make winter a challenging time. A simple phone call, an invitation for a cup of tea or a helping hand to a neighbour can make an enormous difference. The true strength of Fingal lies in its people and their willingness to look out for one another. As Christmas approaches, let us support our local businesses, attend community events and make time for those around us. Whether through volunteering, donating to a local cause or simply offering a warm greeting on a cold morning, every small gesture counts. Winter may bring darkness earlier, but together we can ensure Fingal shines brightly with kindness, generosity and hope. That is the real spirit of Christmas.

Sisters Taking on TRYKA for Arthritis Ireland

Balbriggan natives Sarah and Natalie McCormack have set themselves the challenge of competing in TRYKA - a hybrid race that includes both strength and endurance based exercises as a personal challenge and to raise funds for Arthritis Ireland, a cause that is close to Sarah’s heart who has lived with Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of 14. Speaking about the event Sarah said, ‘This is a challenge that means a lot to us personally. At 14 I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis- an autoimmune disease that affects the joints in painful flares. It had felt like growing pains at first, spiralling into a full body flare that resulted in me missing almost 8 months of school, damaging joints in my hands and feet from the aggressive flare, and having to depend on family for simple daily tasks, like brushing my hair, or walking more than a few feet. Natalie from a young age has always been a strong advocate for physical exercise, health, and in believing people are more capable than they realize. When she first got her personal trainer degree, her first client (target) was Sarah and Natalie helped her to reclaim the physical abilities Sarah had thought would be for ‘regular’ people ‘We’re doing it for everyone in Ireland affected by the disease, 6

BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026

Sarah continued, ‘Arthritis is a disease that affects the body and mind, and that can be really lonely for a lot of people. Constant chronic pain, fatigue, restlessness, discomfort, uncertainty, depression, feeling misunderstood, feeling ‘less than’, and sometimes feeling treated that way, can impact people in all sorts of ways, and Arthritis Ireland does tons of brilliant stuff to help. But, we are also aware that they aren’t the only people that suffer. The families of those diagnosed can feel a lot of those things too. Unwell people (speaking from some personal experience here) can be hard on the people around them.’ ‘Our parents took the brunt of the worries away from me and quietly hid their sleepless nights over doctor appointments and fears for my future, while they also made sure that I was as comfortable as I could have been, even when I couldn’t say thank you for that. I was fortunate to have sisters that never treated me differently (even when I wished they would sometimes), and I think anyone like that deserves to be recognized when it comes to coping with arthritis as well,’ she added Donations close on 6th November and to do so readers can visit: https:// www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/ natalieandsarahmccormack.

Will We Have More Lotto Millionaires? By Dave Kavanagh Well, statistically, the short answer is “Yes” but we know what they say, “there are liars, damn liars and statisticians”. The recent changes that saw the company that runs the Irish National Lottery, reduce your choice of six numbers from 1-47, to 1-45, therefore reducing the chance of winning the jackpot from 1 in 10.7million, back to 1 in 8.1million, which is what it was up to 2015 before they increased the numbers. When the Irish Lotto first started it was 6 numbers from 36 but following a syndicate realising that they could purchase all combinations for less than a million pounds and guarantee a jackpot win, the amount of numbers was increased. In addition to the slightly better odds of winning the jackpot, they have also increased the prize money for winning Lotto Plus 2 from €250,000 to €1million (the same as Lotto Plus 1) so statistically, there is a higher probability that we will see a higher number of people win at least €1million. By comparison, anyone in Ireland that has Serious Illness Cover (AKA Critical Illness cover or Specified Illness Cover) has a 1 in 4 chance of making a claim before they reach the age of 65. Now, 1 in 4 sounds a lot better odds than 1 in 8.1million but human nature being what it is, people don’t want to think about bad things happening to them. They would rather think

of good things happening to them, so they will happily spend their hard-earned money on the Lotto or even Euromillions (which has even higher odds to win the jackpot of 1 in almost 140million) than consider spending some of it on protection type plans, such as serious illness cover. When we see the vast amount of claims paid out by the life companies every year and also the amount of people diagnosed with illnesses that are covered, the real gamble is not having cover in place.

Film Review

Clayface (2026): A Flesh-Stretching Ride Through Gotham’s Underbelly

Splash out

on a new bathroom

By Jack Shanley Comic book cinema takes a sharp, bloody turn into full-throttle body horror with DC Studios’ Clayface, directed by James Watkins (The Woman in Black). Written by horror veteran Mike Flanagan, the film completely strips away traditional superhero tropes, delivering a gritty, standalone origin story that leans heavily into visceral gore and B-movie thrills rather than glossy spectacle. The story focuses on Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), a vain ambitious actor driven on the brink of a big break in his career. Following a tragic exposure to a volatile experimental compound, Hagen’s body begins to mutate, breaking down his flesh. Rather than seeking a cure, Hagen uses his grotesque new ability to morph his appearance to inflict revenge on those who wronged him in Hollywood and Gotham’s dark underworld. Naomi Ackie co-stars as Caitlyn, a scientist whose complex role in Hagen’s transformation echoes classic Frankenstein themes, though the narrative occasionally leaves her underutilized. What makes Clayface stand out from the crowded superhero genre is its refusal to rely on standard franchise formulas. There are no Batman cameos, nod-to-the-camera universe setups, or mid-credits teasers. Instead, Watkins orchestrates a dark, atmospheric thrill ride that relies heavily on practical makeup effects and skin-crawling transformations reminiscent of 1980s horror classics. Harries gives a committed, unhinged performance, capturing both the tragic desperation and the narcissistic malice of a man losing his humanity piece by piece. However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The pacing stumbles from time to time throughout the film. Hagen’s moral descent can make it difficult to root for him as a protagonist but there could be no in some way an argument for him being a character study. When the movie leans into its squeamish, practical-effects-heavy horror—in a chaotic final act—it achieves an incredibly gruesome identity of its own Clayface overall may be too stomach-churning for the average casual viewer seeking a lighthearted comic book adventure, but for genre fans looking for a dark, gruesome and unapologetic horror movie, it offers a refreshingly nasty night at the cinema. In all truth I’d recommend checking out ‘Clayface’ and see what you think of it, I shall give it a score of Three ½ stars. You can watch it at your local cinema today. Director: James Watkins – Rating: 16 – Genre: Horror/Action – Run Time: 1h 48m - Language: English. For more film content please follow @screen_.addicts on Instagram. 8

Takemusu banners tell a bigger story

Another day, another aikido training

If you have walked past Balbriggan Clubs Community Centre or Martello Tower, you may have noticed the bright yellow banners advertising Takemusu Aikido Society. Perhaps you have heard about aikido, or read about it in the pages of Balbriggan Locals, and maybe even considered joining a free trial lesson. But did you know that those sunny yellow banners, bringing a little reminder of summer to the grey Irish winter, were made possible by an organisation called As Darragh Did? As Darragh Did was founded by Andrew McGinley in memory of his son Darragh, who died alongside his brother Conor and sister Carla on 24 January 2020. Darragh was only seven, but he was an active member of his community, taking part in football, GAA, scouts, athletics, drama and other activities. He was always involved in something. Andrew had promised Darragh that he would get involved as a coach with his football team. He kept that promise and went much further by finding a way to encourage others to follow Darragh’s example. Since 2020, around 300 small organisations, often run by volunteers, have received more than half a million euros in support of local projects across Ireland. Behind those figures are clubs, volunteers and people whose lives have been touched by that generosity. Takemusu Aikido Society was fortunate to be part of that story. Last November, our club received support from As Darragh Did because we wanted to help local people discover aikido and, more importantly, encourage them to keep practising after their first few classes. Our aim has never been simply to attract as many people as possible to a class. It is to help people find an activity they enjoy and a group they want to remain part of. We are deeply grateful to Andrew and everyone behind As Darragh Did for helping us make that possible. Andrew has recently announced that As Darragh Did will be winding up. It is sad to see an initiative that has 10 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026

helped so many communities come to an end, but its legacy lives on in the hundreds of projects it supported and the people who benefited from them. We hope the spirit behind it will continue: people giving their time, sharing what they can and helping others take part in local life. Meanwhile, Andrew has been working on a very different project. He has become an author, publishing a children’s adventure for readers aged 8–12. His first book, Prestin and the Booger Oath, is a wonderfully silly, unapologetically ridiculous story meant to make young readers laugh. Its origins, however, are deeply personal. Among the things Andrew’s children left behind was a homemade comic created by Conor and Darragh, with Carla also inspiring the story. Its central character was a boy called Prestin. Andrew has taken that original idea and expanded it into a much bigger adventure, in which Prestin and his best friend Dara discover an imaginary world of rebellious boogers and a rather explosive plan involving a giant snot explosion. Writing the book has given Andrew an opportunity to reconnect with something his children created while they were alive, celebrating their humour and imagination. But Prestin and the Booger Oath is not a book about tragedy. As Andrew explains, it is “about bringing something my children created to life and allowing their imagination to make other children laugh”. Writing has also given Andrew a way to step away, for a while, from the more difficult parts of life, and immerse himself in a world where almost anything can happen. He has already completed two further books about Prestin’s adventures, as well as another book based on one of his children’s creations. His first book is now a reality, growing from a homemade comic into a story other children can enjoy. Andrew will present Prestin and the Booger Oath on 5th November. The book is available for pre-order from amazon.ie and buythebook.ie.

Cold and Flu Relief Through Homeopathy By Michael Farrelly Cold and flu, both caused by viruses, are among the most common acute conditions seen in practice. When exposed to these viral infections, the immune system activates a range of defensive mechanisms. With colds, typically caused by rhinoviruses, this response can produce increased mucus, congestion, and sneezing, helping clear the virus from the respiratory tract. On the other hand, influenza, or flu, often triggers a stronger immune response, resulting in symptoms such as fever, body aches, and fatigue. These symptoms reflect the body’s efforts to fight the infection and develop immunity against future infections. Holistic Cold and Flu Management Rest, Hydration, Homeopathy and Natural Remedies As we enter the cold and flu season, ample rest is crucial. Allowing the body time to heal helps support the immune response. Hydration is equally important, so ensure you drink plenty of fluids, including herbal teas and water. What makes homeopathic treatment particularly effective for colds is the emphasis on matching the remedy to the specific stage and character of the illness. A cold that comes on suddenly after exposure to dry wind calls for an entirely different remedy from one that develops gradually with heavy, droopy exhaustion. A remedy given early may significantly shorten the duration and severity of the illness. Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

Natural remedies such as honey and ginger tea, alongside homeopathic options, can soothe sore throats and coughs. Nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, along with a good multivitamin supplement, provide essential vitamins to support the body. Regular handwashing and proper respiratory etiquette, such as covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, can also help prevent the spread of these viruses. Tailored Homeopathic Remedies for Cold and Flu One of the strengths of homeopathy is its ability to offer personalised remedies based on individual symptoms. Here are a few key examples: Aconite For sudden-onset colds accompanied by high fever and restlessness, Aconite may help mitigate symptoms in the early stages. Arsenicum Album Traditionally associated with symptoms such as watery eyes, a runny nose, and a burning sensation. Gelsemium For slow-developing flu symptoms, Gelsemium can be considered when weakness, dizziness, and a heavy head are prevalent. Rhus Tox For flu symptoms marked by muscle stiffness, pain, restlessness and chilliness. Thirst and throat dryness may also be present.

Oscillococcinum A homeopathic remedy recognised for its potential to reduce the duration and severity of flu. Implementing Homeopathy for Cold and Flu Relief Obtaining cold and flu relief through homeopathy involves some key considerations. Consistent Use Homeopathic remedies often require consistency. Adhere to the recommended dosage and frequency to experience optimal results. Consultation with a Homeopath Before initiating any homeopathic treatment, consult a qualified homeopath. They can provide personalised recommendations based on your specific symptoms and health history. A Natural Approach to Well-Being For those seeking relief from the challenges of cold and flu, homeopathy offers a gentle natural alternative. By understanding the principles behind this holistic approach and embracing personalised remedies, individuals can navigate the winter months with greater resilience. Your health is a journey, and homeopathy can be a supportive companion on the path to wellbeing. Michael Farrelly is a homeopath in Donabate, Co. Dublin, with over twenty years’ experience in treating people with a wide range of ailments. Michael can be contacted on 086-1596119 or at farrellym@hotmail.com. BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026
