COMPANY OVERVIEW When Lusive Decor first opened its doors in 2002, the founders, husband and wife team Jason Kai Cooper and Sally Thomas Cooper had been working in the design industry for nearly two decades. Custom lighting at that time was an exercise of chance and circumstance - finding a lighting manufacturer that had something similar in their line and asking them to modify it, nudging it as close to your vision as possible. Those companies that specialized in custom lighting were predictably traditional; iron-works or crystal-works, with little other choice that didn’t involve a long flight to Italy. At Lusive, Sally and Jason took custom lighting design and manufacturing in a wholly new direction. Having worked in film, theme park and entertainment design, Sally and Jason saw an opportunity to create authentic hand-crafted designs that paired the skills artisians and material sources they had gathered from around the globe, with modern manufacturing and project management techniques to undertake the most challenging design concepts the architectural community could envision. Lusive was conceived as a design-based manufacturing firm along the lines of a scenic studio, beginning each project with exhaustive research and providing a wealth of additional design consultation and management services. With a dedicated in-house project development, the Lusive team offers specification details, renderings, imagery and finish samples at the earliest design stages. Lusive’s development team works hand-in-hand with our architectural clients to develop their design specifications from project concept to completion and installation. Consistently researching and debuting new materials, Lusive works worldwide to offer a diverse and exclusive selection of finishes and specialized vendors. By sourcing the finest materials locally and from Italy, Austria, Brazil, India, the Philippines, and beyond, and by developing and training our in-house artisans in new skills and techniques, Lusive is able to provide distinctive options and a level of quality and originality that is unique in the lighting industry.
SALLY THOMAS COOPER With her rich design and business background, it’s no surprise that Sally built what’s become one of the fastest growing manufacturing companies in the U.S. She first worked in film and television before falling in love with residential interior design and quickly developed an impressive roster of celebrity clients and started working directly with select textile, furniture and lighting companies. Sally then started doing high-end commercial work in the hospitality industry, and it was there she found herself craving more personal, more inspirational lighting choices than were available at the time. Never one to be satisfied with the status quo, Sally and her husband, designer Jason Kai Cooper, decided to make what she’d been missing in the market and created Thomas Cooper Studio to craft artisanal, handcrafted lighting on a grand scale.
JASON KAI COOPER
If you’ve been wowed by the spectacle of Mandalay Bay, a performance at the Mark Taper Forum, or a Bruce Springsteen concert, you have Jason Kai Cooper to thank. He’s the award-winning lighting designer behind these projects and many, many more. He joined forces with his wife, Sally, to create Thomas Cooper and bring his experience in creating drama and wonder to lighting products enhance people’s everyday lives. Jason’s strong belief in collaborative design and his meticulous engineering skills have helped make Thomas Cooper the source top designers and architects rely on for inventive and dynamic work to complement their most prized projects.

CASE STUDY HILTON HAWAIIAN VILLAGE THE CORAL BALLROOM CARL ROSS :: CLEAR ON BLACK
INSPIRATION

Our interior design approach at Clear on Black is comprehensive and holistic - the interior and the FF&E are developed to seamlessly blend and create a dynamic and elegant space. As opposed to a traditional ballroom with rectilinear geometry, the design here needed to be more contemporary and draw its inspiration from organic forms and highly textured coral shapes with irregular edges. We had to transcend the predictable solutions so often seen and open a new horizon for this project. In our role as interior designers, the basis of our design solutions comes from a vast range of sources. In the case of the renovation of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, our design direction is based on three key points:
+ Paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of the Coral Ballroom, its extensive coral collection and the original large-scale murals. + The interior architectural envelope has been completely redesigned to reflect the new contemporary design direction of Hilton Worldwide. + The color palette is relatively neutral, incorporating accents of the unique colors found in the many types of coral.
CREATION The new decorative chandeliers are suspended below the pyramid coffers and the surrounding ceiling plane, except in a few prime locations, where the spiraling revolutions of the chandelier arms lead up into the coffers to create a feature component. This expansion into a more dynamic form relates far better to the shape of each individual ballroom bay, as well as to their unified statement when the ballroom is fully open. This holistic approach creates a far more dynamic and contemporary appeal for the ballroom. Multiple shapes and color tones of Venetian cast glass create an undulating field of rich color and texture. Lusive engineered a custom hand-polished, faceted crystal ‘barnacle’ to create jeweled sparkle points amongst the coral.
REALIZATION I wanted to convey a few thoughts about working with the Lusive team, and specifically how we worked together on the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom project. The decorative lighting is a critically important element and features grand-scale custom decorative chandeliers styled to thematically incorporate the naturally occurring coral shapes and colorations. Lusive worked with us on the “chandelier” concept - which looks almost like a DNA-strand shape, to create a spiral inspired by coral and is composed of a curving spine with a combination of crystal glass and resin plates threaded onto it with long life and energy efficient dimmable xenon lights imbedded within polished crystal accents to add sparkle.
The engineering and coordination required was quite extensive. By partnering with Sally, Jason, and the entire Lusive team of engineers and designers, we were able to create a way to support these organic spiral fixtures in a manner that was as graceful as possible and still achieve the phenomenal illumination impact of the final design. The success of this project was punctuated by Lusive’s attention to detail and in-field follow-up, with their engineers participating in the actual installation and coordination of electricians to meet an incredibly rigorous schedule. All told - Wow! Success, ease of working, exceptional competence and professionalism. Thank you Lusive for a project well done.
