I spoke to a couple of lecturers across the University to ask them whether or not the evaluations make a difference and here is what they said:

· Rainer Hoffman [AGLS] “I learn from my students and from my teaching experience by reflection on my students’ feedback, then using the resulting insight for new action in my teaching approaches and based on the resulting experience I immediately look for student feedback again to continue my own spiral of learning. For example I’ve learned from the student feedback on the flipped classroom, that unless pre-recorded videos are tied to assessment, only a subset of students will actually make use of them. I now link all my flipped classroom approaches to assessment.”

2014 It’s the end of the year, and there’s nothing like the prospect of looming exams to make you want to get a bit weird and dress up like a mail box. While Garden Party 2014 is shaping up to be one of our best yet, there’s a few things you need to keep in mind to make sure you keep safe and have a great time amongst the carnage.

A Different Side to the Usual Story Written by Michael Gardyne

Six before six? Wine before Nine? Goon by noon? No thanks, not for me. It may seem really crazy, but I’ve attended the last two Garden Parties sober, that’s right- stone cold sober. You’ve probably got two questions right now, why? And what’s it like?

Let me explain.

I’ll start with why. I grew up in a family in which alcohol was strongly discouraged. So alcohol was never a part of my direct culture growing up, other than having friends who drank etc.

Love and Loss in the Magnolia Gardens.

A Peacock's Story

very morning last summer I would arrive to the vineyard at 8:05 [cough], I mean 7:55, for work. First order of business on my pushbike was to head over the wooden bridge and through the Magnolia gardens to the tool shed. Most mornings, and you can imagine this was quite a shock at first, my arrival was greeted by a clatter and a crash from the roof of the tool shed.

What was this mysterious ruckus? It was none other than Lincoln University’s own Petey the Peacock getting out of bed, so to speak. Apparently, if you’re bad at flying, low lying rooftops are the next best thing. Other mornings, rare ones indeed, I would accidentally interrupt our feathered friend as he was trying to show off his true colours for a certain lady friend.

That’s right. Not only is there a peacock roaming the Magnolia petal-coveredground at the end of Farm Road, there is also a voluptuous Pea-hen! What follows is a sordid tale of romance, infidelity, disappointment, and hope, the likes of which could only be found at Lincoln University. Probably due to the highly personal nature of this story, Petey and his female counterpart (Petunia?) have declined to speak with journalists. Thus, their story must be pieced together from interviews and eye witness accounts.

A Peacock's Home Is His Castle Our story starts in earnest during the year 1985, with a man named Roy Edwards. Those of you who like to grow things may know that name very well, as Mr. Edwards is a lecturer for several horticulture papers. Out of the remnants of an abandoned strawberry patch, Roy patched together donated plant material from all over Canterbury to form what eventually would become the South Island’s largest Magnolia collection and a stunning New Zealand native plant collection. With assistance over the years from the nursery staff, grounds crew, and the Field Service Centre, this area has gained a sterling reputation by those in the know on these things. Those in the know would include my Auntie Joan, who regularly asks me if the Magnolias are out yet on campus. Hi Auntie Joan.

Enough about humans, more about Peacocks. Specifically, how long has there been a peacock in residence here at Lincoln University and the more obvious question: How did he get here? In a most outstanding turn of events, there are actually a few conspiracy theories as to how Petey made his way to Lincoln. Bernard Newman, Winery and Vineyard Manager and one of Lincoln’s foremost Peacock experts, heard from a credible source that Petey escaped from Orana Wildlife Park as a young peacock, possibly looking for a better life.

Roy Edwards, on the other hand, disputes this theory and insists that someone must have brought and left him here. The truth, Lincoln, we may never know.

On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th September New Zealand Blood Service came

The year is almost over, Garden Party is fast approaching and my flat has been preparing. And by preparing I mean we have been practising. Maybe I mean by practicing we’ve been getting pissed. Twice in one week, hold us back, things are getting loose.

The second saw us in our garage decked out with bikini babes and hot-rod car posters drinking bourbon. No, we didn’t find ourselves in Gore, but a very close second. A bogan (dirty south) themed red card lead us drinking Woody’s and Billy Mav’s and keeping a tally. The rest of the day is mostly a blur filled with attempts to flood out someone’s room and break into it with a piece of wire, texting my boss about chickens, calling my father while in the middle of being egged, and lots of other

As I look back on last year’s Garden Party, there is definitely a lot of things to do, and not to do.

One thing I will not be repeating is the “tradition” of starting at four in the morning, and completing six before six. I did five and a half before six if that counts at all. Made it first to the sausage sizzle, and then started joeing out about 9am after breakfast in someone else’s pod. Most of the group made it in when the gates opened, besides one boy who changed his sheet three times (original costume, I know) before joeing out in his room and missing the first half of the day. Another friend lost her ticket so decided that instead of finding it, buying another at the gate was a simpler idea. My costume was Alan from the Hangover, which I though

was so hilarious until my (fake) baby that I had taped to my front kept getting molested by numerous males, and cooed over by the females. I would definitely not recommend a costume that requires any of your attention, you will need that for yourself to remain alive. This year I will not be bringing anything baby size that requires to be taped to me

I wish you all the luck in the world for your Garden Party, your exams and everything else that could possibly happen before the end of the year. If you’re flatting next year, I hope I haven’t deterred you. I’m sure if your flatmates can cook better than Aran, you will survive. Just kidding, he cooked tea the other night and we are still alive! A win for the team.

Everyone Can Write: A Guide to Get You Started Howard Gelman RRP $24.99.

This is a book that will appeal to anyone who would like to improve their writing skills but breaks out in a cold sweat when confronted with a huge task. It’s a tiny book, with large font, that you could probably skip through in an evening.

“Everyone can write” is a “once over lightly” type of book. It includes some useful tips on making the writing process easier, a simple overview of reports, essays and business emails, and a simple introduction to some basic elements of grammar.

Many people would find the author’s “10 rules” a useful checklist when writing assignments.

It’s an easy read, with a chatty informative style .

But the small format (which appealed to a couple of students I showed it to), is also a drawback – there are few graphics and the small page size makes it appear “text heavy”. I’m not sure it would be the sort of book you could “dip into” when you had a specific question.

Should you read it? Definitely – this is a good introductory book . Should you buy it? Maybe not – if you want something to keep on your shelves and consult time after time, there are plenty of others in the book stores that would be a better long term investment in your writing.

Mexicano’s Victoria St, Christchurch Every month, a group of friends and I get together to dine at a different restaurant; this month it was Mexicanos on Victoria Street and boy am I glad we chose there.

Having never been before but hearing good things, I was keen to experience it for myself.

The first thing I noticed on walking in was the décor: it is quite industrial and “Dia de los Muertos” (day of the dead) themed with fantastic murals and decorated menus.

Authentic Latin music certainly added to the atmosphere as did the fantastic range of fare on offer. Now you would probably expect the normal Mexican specialities such as burritos, enchiladas and nachos but not here. Instead you can choose from soft-shelled tacos to pork hock and braised beef ribs all with a Mexican flavour. Much of the menu is offered as sharing plates for groups of people but we chose our own dishes and swapped a few morsels here and there. I couldn’t have been happier with my selections: Mexicanos fried chicken, cerviche and the chicken taco. The fried chicken was cooked in a sauce to die for, with a delicious sweetness to balance the flavours. The cerviche was thinly sliced and literally made my mouth water just by smelling it; and the soft taco was full of delicious avocado, chicken and mango - a fantastic combination.

Now if the food wasn’t enough, the dinner menu offers a huge amount of drinks including 6 different types of margaritas and that’s not including those on the actual beverage menu! There is also sangria, cocktails, beer, wine and champagne!

If there was one thing I would have liked it would be that the servers pronounce the names of the dishes correctly instead of making them sound very English. Mind you, that is my only gripe. The service itself was wonderful and overall it was a brilliant meal. I would highly recommend this little slice of Mexico. Make sure you book though as it is really popular and almost always busy. Buen provecho!
