Welcome to the 11th edition of 200 best photographers. If an alien were to visit Earth in some post-human time and find among the ruins a copy of 200best photographers, edition 11, I wonder what might they think? Put yourself into their shoes – assuming they have similar limbs onto which they need to attach protective covering, which is not so important for this exploration. Let’s just take it that they have eyes and a brain (or two) that can process images and that they have the time, inclination and digits to turn through the pages. Now, what are they going to conclude about the vanished world that was subjected to our “civilisation”? They may, by chance, start at the beginning. That’s if they share the concept of there being a beginning, middle and end to things and that it’s often best, even obligatory, to try them in that order. These aliens may well have a very different take on the spacetime continuum, but let’s assume they can adapt to our desire for a narrative direction. If so, immediately on reaching the images they may think the dearly departed species, whose ruins they now walk among, were entirely covered in feathers, given where we start our images with the first page of A for Animals. Then, as they page through to Architecture, they leap to the conclusion that we had had lots of little eyes like windows in office towers. In Automotive, the thinking

shifts again: now we are being seen as tall, short, curvy and sometimes chunky, nearly always with four round limbs compactly attached to our shiny and colorful flowing metal bodies. Those round limbs that seem to stick to the ground look familiar. Next up, when they decode the strap-line for the category of Beauty, they start to question their judgements … and ours. But when they hit the Food section, aargh! It is a moment of true horror: they realize we are the enemy as they find one of their friends speared on a fork. It turns out they don’t wear shoes after all, or if they did they would need four pairs.

Our 200 winners seem concerned most with making the viewer feel something, rather than focusing on faithfully capturing light falling on an object in space, which is the starter-kit description of photography. Our 200 have moved worlds beyond where the image capture started. Their work here is neither photojournalism, art photography, or straight “advertising photography”, albeit they and the images may have come from one or more of those fields. Instead, once selected for these pages, the work is transformed to a kind of celebration and comment on our photographic and communication culture. 200best photographers, edition 11, continues to move with the times, as it always has done. When the final selection from the competition is refined and positioned in the pages, it reflects the range of potential imagery that can appear in the applied arts. It also shows where we see the sharp edge of excellence meeting the almost infinite mass of photographic creation for business. In the first editions, back around the turn of the millennium, our pages were strongly targeted at, and derived from, the work that might be used in billboards, print ads and branding communications

At this point, they flip back to the cover, change their skin color, and turn to a passing cockroach to ask: “What were they smoking?” Then they may choose to eat the cockroach (a high-value source of protein and fiber where they come from) before, I hope, reopening the book. After all, with 200 photographers to get through, they know they are going to find a lot to like among the carnage. I could go on but you get the idea: this is a truly strange and wonderful, highly educational, but sometimes alarming, even otherworldly, collection of stunning pictures. Each one has the potential to be a thought bomb of a kind, inviting us to connect or run away. It is as much a mirror on our world and our soul as if we were serving up a volume of world-beating photojournalism … but these images play to different and no rules, complex and sometimes contradictory values, often celebrating the surface of life but also often penetrating deep into our psychology. Instead of one subject, or one kind of photography, it is wideranging. The work explores, celebrates, fantasizes, and seeks out the boundaries of what is possible with photography. In some ways, the images are never really about their subjects, so much as about the responses they can generate. That’s a very different thing to recording or reporting: it is an act of reinvention, making us see the world and its possibilities anew.

What cover would you choose for this book? It’s not about being a good picture – there are 400 pages of those. It has to make a great cover. Can it work in a bookstore, online, both in your hand and across the room? It has to be emotive and somehow pushing at the edges of our thoughts. The choice is a delightfully hard task. of various physical kinds. That was the main media then and, sometimes, it still is. Now, a photograph almost always exists as stored data that can be applied and extended through constantly evolving media. This has greatly opened out the range of what might appear in our selection. Just about any kind of image might find itself created for, or drawn into, the applied world of brand communications. Polarities converge. Highly constructed images and raw photojournalism; the personal and the political; nature and artifice … nothing that the eye can see, nothing that the world can devise and that a lens can capture and/or a computer can generate, is out of bounds. Having said that, one thing has been forbidden from these pages. While we were putting this book together, generative AI was (and no doubt still is) rapidly advancing and increasingly engaging with photography. But you will not find the outputs here. We expressly asked our participants to hold on their explorations with AI and save that for us to showcase elsewhere. Some of the artists who are in these pages are for sure experimenting with the new tools but we decided to keep that work out of edition 11. It is not that we are against AI: we were early into exploring and recognising the creative opportunities and issues that AI brings and continue to monitor the advances in the pages of Lürzer’s Archive. But those image outputs need to be considered separately from the skills and the qualities that this volume of 200best focuses on. What you are looking at here is what photographers can do with a camera and their other tools, observing and reworking the “real”, not what text prompts can guide the staggering genius of AI to do with large sets of what is still often questionably sourced data. Perhaps edition 11 might become a collectors’ item as the last 200best photographers to avoid AI. But I don’t think so. AI will undoubtedly influence what we see as photography … and may influence us on how “pure” photography develops to be more of a truth-teller again, and also as a particular craft. For now, the rapid AI evolution and related controversies influenced the 200best jury and editors to set some boundaries and call for a better understanding and appreciation of what photography does, and photographers do, that is different from super-intelligent machines. At this point, we seem to be sounding both futuristic and profound about photography. And why not? Photography that is applied to advertising and other communications is deliciously profound. I’ve spent much of my life savoring it, encouraging it, questioning it, and dismissing most of it as second-rate … in order to pull out the less than 10 per cent that really interests me in a way that I think might interest others. That percentage estimate is a generous guess on the likelihood of any professional photographer being able to get into these pages. Through layers of editing and judging, the quality becomes pretty rarified, with the chance of an image making it through to print being a small fraction of one percent. I could try and give you the precise math but that’s not what we are here for. Talking about the seriousness – or otherwise – of our images, I’d prefer to drop in a quote rather than
numbers. The writer Geoff Dyer is one of the best writers on photography in the last decade or more and, while discussing the images of Dennis Hopper and his Californian Pop Art friends, he provides us with a sentence that might be applied also to the mix of art and commerce in these pages:
“They brought a glamor to the art which, in turn, celebrated the profundity of the superficial.” It’s a sentence to be found in See/Saw (Canongate, 2021) that is a double-edged sword, a combination of words that both praises creative talents and questions the application of their skill and the aura that surrounds it. Confusingly, underneath everything is something superficial … and yet it has a profundity. There is always more depth under the surface – or perhaps reflecting from it. There is an ambiguity, or contradiction, in the quote that perfectly captures how great photography used in commerce, or when used for the purposes of another’s message beyond the value of the image alone, becomes something almost transcendental. You are aware there is something wonderful and magical about how the image works on you but uncertain as to what it is really saying. The more you interrogate it, the less precision there is … and yet you feel more. The advertising image is not a pure document, not a clean piece of photojournalism, although it may have started out like that. Neither is it a pure piece of art, meaning it is the result of whatever the photographer felt or thought when creating it. Because what the photographer thinks, intends or feels, is actually irrelevant to the value of the image that is to be applied to another message. Great photography that exists in the commercial, or communication industry, space has to be judged by its capacity to embody concepts and feelings in a way that works a charm on the viewer. It is merely an image but it can make us buy stuff, or motivate us to care, to feel, to laugh or cry, or just connect in some way beyond words. It is profoundly superficial. As are so many things: a child’s glove lost in the park, leaf litter in autumn, a traffic jam … add your personal thoughts to this truly infinite list. And from documenting and transforming that continuum or content comes the infinite supply of great images, for great photographers to stand apart from AI. The future awaits with more new talents, and new media and technologies, to take us forward. This is where we have taken our survey now and with that I commend to you our 11th edition. I hope you find inspiration in it – to appropriate a profoundly superficial line that we still treasure on a popular chocolate bar of great longevity – for your work, pleasure and play.
