The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Photography in Advertising I attended a talk the other evening, and the speaker, a historian, said: “We live in the past and the future, and very little in the present.” You may disagree or agree. You will no doubt have heard versions of something similar but different. Popular writer Eckhart Tolle built a self-help cult preaching that we should learn (with his help) to live in the now, as now is all there is. That may be considered a matter of opinion. There are others out there with alternative takes on where we should locate our sense of self. But we are here to consider photography, an art form where time is of the essence.

So where is photography now? Is it always now?

The historian’s comment fuelled thoughts I was having about this incredible medium, where it has been and where it is going. Each time we do a new 200best photographers, it is a wonderful opportunity – if not a demanding requirement – that we take stock of how the past, present, and future relate to the selection we put before you.

You will have seen that this edition’s cover choice demonstrably performs that balancing act. It is an image that is retro in its content, inherently of now every time you look at it, and yet by positioning it on

our cover, we are, at the very least, suggesting it has relevance to the future. Even if you disagree with our choice, we have given the image more of a life in the future by such promotion.

That’s what happens with all arresting images. They emerge from our collective past (even if they are futuristic in content, they must be made – in the past – before we see them). And yet every time we look at the image, it is remade in our mind for an instant … it is, instantly, of now. It can look different in different lights, when shown in or on different media, or just because

we feel different about it in a different moment. We are not constant and neither is the image, and yet there is a sense of integrity to both ourselves and the image.

Our interest in the picture will be influenced by what we need from it. Every single time we look, our relationship evolves. It may very well be an unknown need, or needs, never consciously articulated, and yet our curiosity and response to the image will be driven by such needs and desires. In this way, the image shapes our future as well as its own future.

This has been the situation for photography since its very origin as a medium. (That origin itself sits in various points in the past: Thomas Wedgwood, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Henry Fox Talbot …). And yet now we may be in a crucial time of reconsideration. Yes, you knew I was going to get to generative AI at some point in this introduction, didn’t you? Can photography ever be AI-assisted or created? Well, undoubtedly any serious photographer is going to have to consider AI tools, if only to firmly reject them. Some photographers have thrown themselves into using and presenting AI as a part of their image-making kitbag. Others are shaping their work to be defiantly valuable because their work is somehow clearly not AI. And for sure we have been quickly bored with the rapidly changing phases of the “AI look”, lurching from the innovations of one platform to the next.

This area of speculation sent me back to look over the previous 11 editions of 200best photographers.

From the cover onwards, you can see the growing enchantment and at times disenchantment with the possibilities that Photoshop and other manipulation tools provided, and indeed still provide. They became thoroughly assimilated into all photography. From those shooting on analog and then scanning and further postproducing the image as an artwork, to photojournalist images that are slightly rebalanced to better show what was factually there in front of the camera, the digital tools are ubiquitous.

That has been the case for more than 20 years. Now we work with AI as the ever-present technology innovation that surrounds and informs the space for photography.

And yet it is remarkable that with submissions and selection of the images in this book we saw almost no acknowledgement of AI. What you see on the coming pages is a presentation of work that either deliberately avoids AI or where AI has yet to achieve a standard that it could compete with. Or, just possibly, where AI is so infused in processes already that we cannot see, and the submitting artist cannot record how AI may be informing their work.

Our intention is to show the best images from the best photographers that we have sourced and have submitted to this ongoing 200best project, itself now around 20 years old. We are here to inspire users of this book with ideas about photography and possibly inform who you want to work with next. We have them arranged in themes, subject areas, but our jury is led by the strength of the image first, not by trying to fill a category or by the photographer’s name.

While the book has a constant name, we are aware that the very nature of what a photograph and a photographer are is changing. We change a little every edition with that. Will this be the last 200best photographers that is not heavily informed by AI? Or will the next edition be insistently more of a reaction against AI? I suspect that in some ways we are seeing that reaction already happening. Perhaps that, in some way, subconsciously informed our choice of the cover image.

Why we have been here for 12 editions, why we are here now and are confident that there will be further editions, is because the photograph remains an incredibly powerful tool of communication. It is highly creative and yet highly real. It touches us in ways that nothing else can. The inherent “reality” of a photograph works on our minds at lightning speed (ingested at a speed as fast as 13 milliseconds, which is faster than thought and perhaps 20 times faster than a word). It has a power beyond reason, beyond our consciousness.

This reminds me of a very famous paper once written about how mathematics can almost magically predict our understanding of physics ahead of seeing the physical event. For example, Newton and Einstein used math to work out physical laws that were only demonstrated later. In its modest way, modest because it works best on our subconscious, a great image often communicates to us in a way that we don’t understand at the time … but it changes our understanding, changes our belief, a little. That’s vital in photojournalism, it’s also vital in building brands, winning hearts and minds, and it is vital for any lasting work of art. Hence the title of this introduction, which goes to the core of what this book is about. I am not sure what Eugene Wigner, author of The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences, would have said about the matter, but thank you for the inspiration, Eugene. And, perhaps strangely, there is a lot of math involved in great photography, even if not by intention. Now, over to you, dear readers.
