Wilson County is full of historic places,
events and people. Here in WilCo, we know that some of the best parts of traveling is learning about the history of new places and exploring the sights that have shaped our great nation and made us who we are today.

President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers following the attack on Fort Sumter, Hatton reversed his position. He organized a volunteer company for State service, the Lebanon Blues (soon part of the 7th Tennessee Infantry). Hatton was elected the regiment’s colonel at Camp Trousdale in Sumner County, Tennessee, and was sent to western Virginia in July 1861.
Cedar Grove Cemetery
On May 23, 1862, Hatton was promoted to brigadier general of the Tennessee Brigade, 1st Division, Army of Northern Virginia. Eight days later, he was killed while leading his brigade at the Battle of Seven Pines in Virginia. His body was returned to Tennessee, but because Federal troops occupied Middle Tennessee, he was temporarily interred in Knoxville. On March 23, 1866, Hatton was reburied in Lebanon’s Cedar Grove Cemetery. His statue is atop the Confederate monument erected on Lebanon’s town square in 1912
The Civil War Trails is a great way to explore some of the lesser-known sites of the Civil War. The Civil War Trails span throughout Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia. In Wilson County, we have a total of 5 Civil War Trail locations that can be explored!
(Tennessee Department of Tourist Development: Tennessee Civil War Trails.) The city of Lebanon purchased the land for this beautiful cemetery in 1846. Beneath its trees lie more than 150 soldiers who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War, including many Wilson County men who enlisted in the 7th Tennessee Infantry. The focal point of Cedar Grove Cemetery is the Confederate Monument, which was erected on July 27, 1899. Gen. Robert H. Hatton, a former U.S. congressman whose statue stands in the town square, is one of the notables buried here.
Downtown Lebanon
(Tennessee Department of Tourist Development: Tennessee Civil War Trails.) This marker is located on the Historic Lebanon Square in honor of the Battle of Lebanon. In May of 1862, Colonel John Hunt Morgan’s Confederate troops set up camp around the Public Square in Lebanon as well as Cumberland University. They were attacked by the Federal Cavalry, which led to Morgan and his men fleeing Lebanon via the Rome and Trousdale Ferry Pikes to Carthage. While Federal casualties were low, about 50 of Morgan’s men were killed, 150 captured, and the remainder scattered throughout the countryside.
Seawell Hill Camp
(Tennessee Department of Tourist Development: Tennessee Civil War Trails.) On the grounds of former Castle Heights Military Academy sits the historic Seawell Hill Camp in Lebanon, TN. Confederate General Joseph Wheeler’s cavalrymen set up camp at Seawell Hill during their raid through Tennessee. A small group of Union troops in Lebanon fled to Nashville but burned their headquarters at Cumberland College before they left.
Robert Hatton House
(Tennessee Department of Tourist Development: Tennessee Civil War Trails.) Located at 327 W. Main Street in Lebanon, is the marker for the Robert H. Hatton House that was unfortunately destroyed by fire after the Civil War. Hatton was born in October in 1826, but early in his life his family moved to Lebanon. He graduated from Cumberland University and then studied law at Cumberland School of Law. Admitted to the bar in 1850, Hatton established a successful practice in Lebanon. Although he opposed secession and believed that the Union should be preserved, after

Pickett Chapel Methodist Church
(Tennessee Department of Tourist Development: Tennessee Civil War Trails.) Pickett Chapel Methodist Church is located at 209 East Market Street. In 1866, recently emancipated African Americans bought the former Methodist church, where some had worshipped as slaves, and established their own congregation. The Rev. Calvin Pickett served as their first minister.
WilCo’s Musical History
Wilson County has played its fair share of starring roles in Tennessee’s music scene. The picturesque Americana city of Watertown has hosted the production of countless music videos from artists like Little Big Town (Boondocks music video), Justin Bieber (One Less Lonely Girl music video), Miranda Lambert (We Should Be Friends music video), Kellie Pickler (Red High Heels music video), Tim McGraw (Southern Voice music video), Taylor Swift (Safe & Sound music video) and even a Garth Brooks Pepsi commercial. In addition to Watertown’s music video productions, Lebanon has hosted music videos from Kid Rock (performing at Snow White Diner in the music video First Kiss), Lady Antebellum (Just A Kiss music video), and Taylor Swift (Love Story music video filmed at Cumberland University). Due to its proximity to Nashville and benefits of rural life, Wilson County has been the home of many music legends such as Reba McEntire, Gretchen Wilson, Charlie Daniels (who even has a children’s park in Mt. Juliet with his namesake), Kelly Clarkson, Duane & Gregg Allman (Allman Brothers), Lorie Morgan, Tracy Lawrence, Uncle Jimmy Thompson (one of the first performers at the Grand Ole Opry), and more!

Located on the James E. Ward Agricultural Center, Fiddler’s Grove Historical Village is a charming and educational way to spend an afternoon with the family. Browse the village to get a sneak peek into history, including a railway museum, blacksmith shop, school house, and general store. To honor these service men and women, there is also a memorial plaza that you won’t want to miss!

In Mt. Juliet, Pump it Up! offers open jump times where your little ones can play on indoor inflatables, such as slides, bounce houses, obstacle courses and more! For the older kids in your group, head to the nearby (and newly opened!) Altitude Trampoline Park in the neighboring Hermitage area. For the creative ones, head to Imagine That! Art Studio in Lebanon for paint your own pottery, canvas painting parties, wooden sign workshops, pottery classes and special events. If you are in Mt. Juliet, head to Fired Up for some pottery painting – this activity is great for making gifts or fun parties! If you are looking for some family-friendly theatre, WilCo boasts three production companies (Encore Theatre, Centerstage Theatre and Audience of One Productions) which offer countless opportunities to see amazing, locally produced shows. The Wilson County area is home to a unique ecosystem that enables cedar forests to flourish among limestone glades. Due to its unique ecosystem, nineteen rare and endangered species of plants grow in the WilCo area that can’t be found anywhere else in the world! To check out some of these rare sights, we recommend taking a guided tour of Cedars of Lebanon State Park in Lebanon, TN. Cedars of Lebanon State Park frequently holds these Ranger-led hikes, and you can learn all about the special plants seen only here in WilCo! *VISIT WILCO TIP: Keep your eye out
for other activities at Cedars of Lebanon State Park such as guided cave tours, hiking, swimming (in an Olympic-size pool), birding, and even disc-golf! For history buffs, Sellars Farm State Archaeological area, an extension of Long Hunter State Park, is a family-friendly attraction situated on one of the few Native American mounds in Tennessee. Artifacts discovered at Sellars Farm indicate that the Native American community was occupied during the Mississippian Period around 900AD until 1500AD. Sellar’s Farm is located in Watertown, TN, whereas the rest of Long Hunter State Park is situated in the Mt. Juliet area of Wilson County. Enjoy fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, hiking, and biking throughout Long Hunter’s 2,600 acres of pure Tennessee!

Looking for a relaxing day out on the water? WilCo’s waterways are an awesome touch to your Tennessee vacation! With Percy Priest Lake, Cedar Creek, Old Hickory Lake and the Cumberland River located within Wilson County, and with nearby Center Hill Lake, you are sure to find the perfect day on the lake during your next visit to WilCo! Love the water, but can’t fit your boat in a carryon? No worries! Boat and kayak rentals are available in the area to help you live out your lake-day dreams. There’s nothing quite like a walk (or hike!) to help bring you back to nature. Here in WilCo, we have trails for any level of hiker, from beginners to experienced (and even ones where Fido can tag along).

Cedars of Lebanon State Park has 8 miles of hiking trails open year round where visitors frequently encounter some of WilCo’s animal residents such as deer, rabbits and turkeys. Robinson Park in Mt. Juliet hosts a ½ mile wraparound hiking trail and even offers outdoor fitness equipment! Long Hunter State Park boasts 26 miles of easy to moderate hiking trails and even has a 2 mile, paved lake trail for those who need stroller or wheelchair trail options. Branch recreation area offers a mountain biking trail for all skill levels and is located in Mt. Juliet.
Horseback Riding
There’s no better way to explore the outdoors than on horseback! Check out Juro Stables in Mt. Juliet or the riding stables in Cedars of Lebanon State Park for horseback riding trails and guided tours.
Camping
Camping is the way to go in order to truly appreciate the Tennessee outdoors. Here in WilCo, we have plenty of camping options to accommodate any size group or camping style. Cedars of Lebanon State Park has many camping options for primitive camping, RV’s, and even cabins that can be rented! For the more adventurous, Long Hunter State park has two campsites that require a 6-mile hike (and early booking) to enjoy. The Nashville East / Lebanon KOA has plenty of options from cabins to camping or RV-ing, complete with a pool and basketball courts. Have a large group of campers or RV’s? The James E. Ward Agricultural Center offers over 250 acres with 1,000 RV sites with electric and water hookups. Primitive camping is also available throughout the AG Center grounds, as well as additional facilities you can rent for your group’s event! *VISIT WILCO TIP: Ready to camp in WilCo but
