Kayak Pecatonica River PADDLE YOUR WAY THROUGH NATURE

With over 15 miles of river trails in Stephenson County, the Pecatonica River beckons families to explore its picturesque waters. Whether you embark from Winslow, Cedarville Road, Wes Block Landing, Tutty’s Crossing, or Atten’s Landing, there are ramps and easy kayak entry points. You can bring your own kayak or canoe or call Pec-N-Paddle to rent one. This meandering river is great for paddlers of all expertise and a great way to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.

Fishing at Lake Le-Aqua-Na REEL IN QUALITY TIME

Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Park, located just outside of Lena, underwent a multimillion-dollar makeover in 2021, including significant improvements to the lake itself. Now fully restocked and teeming with fish, it’s an ideal place for a memorable family fishing trip. Be sure to explore the park’s beautiful hiking trails if you have some extra time or bring the camping equipment to have a weekend of memories.

Train Ride at Stephenson County Antique Engine Museum

A real steam or diesel engine operates on two miles of preserved track on the east edge of Freeport, offering a fantastic outdoor adventure. For some refreshing fun on a warm day, visit the FAM Art Plaza Splash Pad. Multiple streams of water jet skyward from the concrete pad, offering a fantastic way to cool down. You can bring a picnic and enjoy the park or cross the street to Union Dairy for ice cream and visit the historic Lincoln Douglas debate site.

Our monuments and historic landmarks honor the people and moments that helped shape America — from those who offered refuge along the Underground Railroad and preserved Native American heritage, to social reformers and future presidents who changed the course of history.

In Cedarville, the Cedarville Area Historical Society shares the remarkable story of Jane Addams, founder of Hull House and the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Born to a local businessman and Illinois State Senator, Addams often returned home to reflect and renew her passion for social change. Visitors can pay tribute to her lasting legacy at the peaceful Jane Addams Burial Site in Cedarville.

A short drive away in Freeport, the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square marks the site of the famous 1858 debate where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas made history. It was here that Lincoln’s words sparked national attention and set him on the path to the presidency.

Stephenson County’s historic spaces continue to preserve these stories of courage, progress, and lasting influence.

A HISTORY REACHING BACK LONG AGO

The longest highway in the United States is celebrating its legacy of a century of connection, culture, and cross-country adventure. Officially designated in 1926 with the creation of the U.S. Highway System, U.S. Route 20 has been woven into the fabric of America’s history for generations.

The “0” in Route 20’s designation marks it as a true coast-to-coast highway, stretching from one ocean to the other and instantly earning its place among America’s most important travel routes.

Long before it became a numbered highway though, much of its path followed Native American trails and early postal routes—roads once traveled by historical figures like George Washington, Henry Knox, Henry Ford, and Benjamin Franklin. In fact, several of the mile markers Benjamin Franklin established in the 1700’s along the road can still be seen today.

In 2026, U.S. Route 20 stretches 3,365 miles from Boston, MA to Newport, OR crossing 12 states. Originally ending at the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, it was extended westward in 1940 to complete its continental reach. Yellowstone is also the only place where the highway has a discontinuity in the official designation.

HIGHWAY 20THE NORTHWEST ILLINOIS STRETCH

By 1924, the road had already been paved up to the Jo Daviess County line through Stephenson County, making it a vital corridor for both travelers and commerce, but as traffic grew, so did safety concerns. The construction of Interstates 80 and 90 in the 1960s helped ease congestion, but U.S. 20 remained a challenging roadway. A proposal to widen the highway in Northwest Illinois followed, with the Rockford-to-Freeport section completed in 1972 and the Freeport bypass completed between 1985 and 1988.

With the addition of the bypass, the road now exists in two forms— Historic Route 20, tracing the original 1926 alignment, and U.S. Highway 20, the modern route that continues to carry travelers coast to coast.

If you’ve ever driven across the country, chances are you’ve followed some stretch of Route 20—perhaps without even realizing it. Depending on which area of the country you’re passing through, it may have another name as well. In Illinois it is also known by Ulysses S. Grant Highway, the Targhee Pass in Montana, and the Boston Buffalo Highway in the State of New York.

The historic route offers those with a sense of adventure a chance to travel through scenic landscapes, charming small towns, and vibrant downtowns rich in history, like Freeport. While much of the modern four-lane highway follows the original alignment to Freeport, a portion of old Highway 20 now leads through downtown Freeport, also known as Business 20 or Galena Ave. Along the way, the road winds through industrial parks, neighborhoods, gas stations, and the beating hearts of communities that have grown alongside it. Those who journey this route often discover more than America’s open road—they find stories of renewal and revitalization at every turn.

To preserve that legacy, the Historic U.S. Route 20 Association, a nonprofit organization, continues to promote the communities, small businesses, and landmarks along the original 1926 route. Their mission is to protect and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of America’s longest highway—from Boston to Newport. You can find more about the association at historicroute20.org

Freeport High School Marks 100 Years of Pretzel Pride

This year, Freeport High School proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary — a century of shaping students, building traditions, and serving as a cornerstone of the Freeport community.

Since opening its doors in 1926, FHS has educated generations of Pretzels, producing leaders, innovators, athletes, and artists who have carried their Freeport roots across the globe. Through the decades, the school has been home to championship teams, awardwinning music and arts programs, and a spirit of perseverance that embodies the Pretzel name.

The centennial year is a time to honor that rich history and reflect on the countless memories created in its classrooms, hallways, and stadiums. It is also a chance to look forward — to celebrate the future of Freeport High School and the students who will carry its legacy into the next 100 years.

Special events throughout 2026 bring together alumni, students, staff, and community members to mark this milestone and share in the pride of being a Pretzel. From honoring traditions of the past to envisioning opportunities ahead, the 100th anniversary of Freeport High School is truly a community-wide celebration.
