Wildlife Safety

As you meet the diverse wildlife of Haywood’s outdoors, from salamanders underfoot to endangered gray bats overhead, remember that you’re visiting their home. It’s important to respect natural habitats and keep wild animals wild.

ELK

Elk were reintroduced to North Carolina in Haywood County’s Cataloochee Valley, a preserved 1920s village in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A growing population of these impressive animals now call Haywood home.

Find Elk in Cataloochee Valley and throughout the town of Maggie Valley around dawn and dusk.

BE ELK SMART

Stay at least 150 feet from elk. Elk can be defensive if they feel threatened.

Never feed elk.

Don’t name elk. Personifying elk degrades their wild nature.

Reduce speed near elk grazing/crossing areas.

If you see someone behaving disruptively or carelessly around elk, ask them to stop and/or report it.

Elk Extras

Elk are the biggest animal in the Smokies, with antlered bulls weighing up to 1,000lbs and standing at up to 9-feet in height!

Elk can reach speeds of 45mph and jump up to 8 feet high.

Hellbenders

BLACK BEARS

Western North Carolina’s Great Smokies are home to a thriving population of black bears. Spotting one in the wild is a powerful reminder of nature’s beauty and strength.

BE BEARWISE

Do not feed the bears.

Secure food and garbage. Never approach bears.

Stay in your vehicle.

Dogs and bears don’t mix. Keep your dog on a leash.

When hiking carry bear spray.

A Bit About Bears

Can run up to 30 miles an hour.

Up to 6 feet in length and over 3 feet in height when on all fours.

Black bears are more active at dawn and dusk, and from May to August. Report bear incidents within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by calling 865-436-1230 or reporting to a park-run visitor center. If you have a bear encounter outside of the park, call the local authorities.

A source of mountain pride, the presence of these giant aquatic salamanders indicates that Haywood’s waterways are clean and clear. Hellbenders are a protected species, and it’s up to everyone who visits their home to protect their fragile habitats!

Hellbender Highlights

• Also known affectionately as “snot otters” or “devil dogs.”

• They’re the largest salamander species in the Americas, growing up to 2 feet long.

• They live in the shade of large, flat underwater rocks in cool, rushing waters. To avoid injuring Hellbenders and their eggs, do not move, stack, or otherwise disturb rocks in rivers or streams.

Haywood’s public lands sprawl hundreds of square miles. Beyond housing some of the Southeast’s most iconic outdoor experiences, there are thousands of animal, plant, and insect species that make our corner of the Western NC mountains so unique.

Follow the Leave No Trace Principles to respect, protect, and preserve the delicate environments at the heart of Haywood’s rugged beauty:

• Plan Ahead and Prepare Stick to Trails and Overnight Right

• Trash Your Trash

• Leave It as You Find It

• Be Careful with Fire

• Keep Wildlife Wild

• Share Our Trails

Make a Splash Water

Activities

Haywood boasts Western North Carolina's cleanest, clearest water, courtesy of the fact that all waterways originate within the county - called “headwaters.” With no upstream sources to bring in outside pollution, the remarkably clean waters of the local Pigeon River and its offshoots make Haywood a prime spot for swimming, kayaking, and more!

TAKE A DIP

Beat the heat at one of our natural swimming holes!

Midnight Hole

From the Big Creek Trailhead in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a scenic 1.5-mile hike ends at Midnight Hole, enclosed by boulders and seasonal wildflowers.

Sunburst Swimming Hole

A short distance up the road from Lake Logan and Sunburst Campground on NC-215, you’ll find this large swimming hole to the left.

Bubbling Spring Branch

The 1/4-mile, downhill path to this hidden gem off NC-215 may be rocky, but the 3-tiered cascades and crystal-clear wading pool are worth the trek!

WHEN IN DOUBT, FLOAT IT OUT

Prefer a more relaxed day on the water?

Spend a few hours tubing down the Pigeon River, sipping a beverage, and soaking up the summer sunshine. Bring your own tube or go through Haywood’s local tubing outfitter and guide, Cold Mountain Tubing.

Enjoy the water without without dipping in at Lake Junaluska, where the onsite Lake Junaluska Outfitters rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, and schedule lake cruises!

IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS

Rocks around waterfalls and bodies of water can be very slippery. Stay off slick surfaces.

Never dive into a natural swimming hole, even if you’ve done so in the past. Natural currents can displace rocks and other organic debris over time––feel it out with your feet, not your skull!

With no lifeguards on duty, it’s up to you to monitor the safety of yourself and your group.

Swimming holes are popular! Remember to be respectful of others (including wildlife), pick up your trash, and only park in designated areas.

If you hook a Hellbender while fishing, cut the line close to the hook and release—the hook will rust away on its own within a couple of weeks. Then, report the encounter to the NC Wildlife Resource Commission: (919) 707-0050 or lori.williams@ncwildlife.gov

Fishing

Trout fishing is the name of the game in Haywood, where you’ll find both wild and stocked streams. Whereas other, downstream Pigeon River destinations are too warm to keep trout, the cooler temperatures of Haywood’s high-elevation waterways allow the species to thrive.
