WILDLIFE SAFETY TIPS from GSMNP Wildlife Biologist, Joe Yarkovick

• Secure food and garbage • Don’t approach bears • Take other attractants inside (bird feeders, pet food, etc.) • Let your neighbors know when bears are out

• Keep your distance – at least 50 yards (federal regulation) • Bring binoculars • Listen to Park staff/volunteers • Reduce speed near elk grazing/crossing areas • Elk calving season can mean calves hidden in the fields and protective moms • If near the road, stay in the vehicle for safety • If there’s a dog, it needs to be on a leash and in the vehicle away from the elk
