World-class cultural institutions, James Beardrecognized dining, reinvigorated urban spaces, hotels that surprise and delight—Houston has got them all. – Worth, July 2019

elcome to the Culinary and Cultural Capital of the South. Whether you know it as Space City, Bayou City, Clutch City, Hustletown or the Energy Capital of the World – Houston’s got something for everyone – award-winning food, visual and performing arts, sports, recreation, and world-class shopping. It’s what you’d expect from the most diverse city in the country, with 2.3 million residents speaking 145 different languages in a sprawling metropolis that spans 669 square miles. This guide will give you the inside scoop on where the locals go. Conde Nast Traveler says, "There are cities that claim to be melting pots, but they can't compare to Houston." The city’s mix of peoples and traditions has created a blockbuster, award-

winning food scene that’s never been better. Recently, local eateries have been featured on Netflix’s Ugly Delicious and in Andrew Zimmern’s The Zimmern List. In 2019, the city had an impressive 11 James Beard Award semifinalists. Thrillist, concurs “Houston is a sweet symphony of cultures, so when it comes to food, the city arguably has it all.” The arts and culture scene is equally vibrant. Houston boasts professional resident companies in ballet, opera, symphony, and theater; only four other U.S. cities can say the same. Just five minutes from downtown, you can see visual artists in their natural habitat at Sawyer Yards, 55 acres of warehouses in Arts District Houston that houses the studios of hundreds of working artists, making it one of

the largest creative communities in the nation. Just across downtown in the East End, colorful street art and oversized murals create endless Instagrammable moments. In the leafy Museum District, you’ll find 19 cultural institutions set within blocks of one another – including the growing campus of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (make sure to take a selfie with Houston’s own “Bean” – Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Column”). It’s just the tip of the iceberg, with more than 500 arts organizations and 12,000 visual and performing artists in the region. Over on the happening east side of Downtown (EaDo in the local parlance), take advantage of the mild weather and explore more than
four miles of hike and bike trails along Buffalo Bayou that extend to the Port of Houston Turning Basin. The adjacent 150-acre East River waterfront development is coming together, mixing culture with commerce — including highend retail and restaurants. Your Houston adventure awaits. As Travel + Leisure says, “Black gold and Texas tea are what put Houston on the map, but if you visit Houston, you aren't going to look at oil derricks. Instead, its rich cultural offerings, exciting things to do, and laid-back Southern atmosphere will not only draw you in, they’ll keep you there, too.”

2020-21 OFFICIAL VISITORS GUIDE
The Beer Can House, covered with more than 50,000 flattened beer cans, is a local art landmark and remains an odd bungalow in a sea of townhomes. Buffalo Bayou Kayak Tours lets visitors paddle through the heart of the city on a two-person kayak adventure. Spot blue herons, loggerhead turtles and an occasional alligator sunning along bayou banks. The majestic, 64-foot high Gerald D. Hines Water Wall, designed by renowned architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, pour an impressive 78,500 gallons of recycled water down the structure’s black obsidian walls. Adjacent to the Galleria, this is the perfect spot for selfies, shopping breaks, and al fresco picnics. Go back in time at The Heritage Society and Sam Houston Park, a historic village in the shadow of downtown Houston’s skyline, with structures dating from 1823 to 1905, plus a museum building with fascinating historical exhibits. As the sun is setting, drop into artist James Turrell’s Twilight Epiphany Skyspace, located on the Rice University campus. This free exhibit plays with light and space to alter the viewer’s perception of the sky. The National Museum of Funeral History proudly holds the title of the nation’s largest display of historic funeral service memorabilia and artifacts, including a 1920s hearse and a brightly colored “fantasy coffin”. The Orange Show, a national folk-art landmark in the East End, took about 25 years for mailman and owner Jeff McKissack to create. This orange-themed, maze-like monument was made using concrete, brick, steel and anything else he could find. Don’t miss the adjacent Smither Park, a funky, fun-filled green space with an amphitheater, meditation garden and pavilion. Lots of Instagrammable moments here. With 39 historic structures set on five city blocks, the nonprofit Project Row Houses offers a place for local artists to learn and work – and in some cases, live. The Waugh Drive Bat Colony, located just
under the bridge between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive near downtown, is home to millions of bats. At sunset, they take off from under the bridge in one huge group. For the best view, stake your place on the observation deck located on the corner of Waugh Drive and Allen Parkway.

The Astrodome, nicknamed, “The Eighth Wonder of the World.” opened in 1965 as the world's first indoor domed sports stadium. Enjoy a Dome Faux’m cream ale – a tribute to the stadium’s beverage – at 8th Wonder Brewery. KUHT (Houston Public Media) is a PBS member station and was the first public television station in the United States. (Tours are available at the station, located on the UH Main Campus). The first successful human heart transplant was performed in Houston by Dr. Denton Cooley in 1968. (Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Texas Medical Center at Third Coast, an upscale New American restaurant located on the top of one of the center’s parking garages.) In 1969, "Houston" was the first word spoken from the moon. The Apollo 11 mission established a place in history for the city when astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke the now-famous line, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Arts & Culture
IT’S NO TEXAS BOAST: Houston is serious about the arts. The city features one of the nation’s largest museum districts and serves as one of the few American cities with resident professional companies in ballet, opera, symphony and theater. The 17-block downtown theater district is home to Houston Grand Opera, Alley Theatre, Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet, all consistently presenting Grammy, Tony and Emmy award-winning performances. Other area performing arts organizations include Society For The Performing Arts and Theatre Under The Stars, the nation’s largest nonprofit producer of musical theater. Minutes away, in Midtown, check out the calendar lineup at MATCH. This stateof-the-art visual and performing arts venue opened in 2015 and plays host to more than 50 area arts groups including DiverseWorks, Main Street Theater and River Oaks Chamber Orchestra. Nearby is the famed Ensemble Theater, presenting African American artistic expression since 1976.
VISUAL ARTS
The Museum District’s anchor and the nation’s sixthlargest art museum – Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – continues to undergo a tremendous campus expansion, with new exhibition, conservation and education spaces, and a master plan that knits together a century’s worth of signature architectural structures.
The nearby Contemporary Arts Museum Houston celebrates post-modern artwork inside its distinctive stainless-steel space. The leafy, campus-like Menil Collection, one of the most important private museums in the world, is also not to be missed.
HANDS-ON LEARNING
The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft features rotating exhibits of local and national fiber, textile, furniture, glass, ceramics and metal artists, plus working studios that are open to the public for interaction with resident artists.
The educational exhibits at Houston Museum of Natural Science unfold within a four-level complex. Do not miss the museum’s Wortham IMAX Theater or the Cockrell Butterfly Center. The Health Museum inspires passion and curiosity in health, the medical sciences, and the human body through educational programming with permanent and traveling exhibits. Rice University and The University of Houston also offer plentiful arts and culture. Rice’s Moody Center For The Arts focuses on presenting work by world-recognized artists that fosters conversations across disciplines. At UH’s Blaffer Gallery, viewers find a rotating mix of work by U.S. and international artists. The programming at UH’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts is dedicated to ground-breaking, transformational collaborations across the performing, visual, and literary arts.

Houston-born filmmaker Richard Linklater spent part of his own boyhood in Houston, which served as much of the backdrop for his film Boyhood (2014), filmed over 12 years, following the same actors. Shooting locations include Minute Maid Park (501 Crawford), Miller Outdoor Theatre (6000 Hermann Park Drive), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1001 Bissonnet St.) and the Houston Museum of Natural Science (5555 Hermann Park Drive).
FEATURE: Hollywood in Houston
Let’s start with the Academy Award-winning Terms of Endearment. You can find Aurora Greenway’s house still standing (3060 Locke Lane), as well as the garage apartment that Flap and Emma rented (1148 Heights Boulevard). Want to recreate Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson’s lunch scene? Then head on over to the famed Brennan’s creole restaurant at 3300 Smith Street in midtown and ask to be seated at the same table. (The Evening Star, the sequel to Terms, was also shot in Houston).
Sci-fi lovers will recognize the Wortham Theater Center (501 Texas Avenue) as Robocop 2’s (1990) Civic Centrum, as well as the Alley Theater (615 Texas Avenue) starring as the “Omni Consumer Products Corporation” -- with downtown Houston standing in for dystopian metropolitan Detroit. Additionally, the third Transformers movie, Dark Side of Moon (2011), was partially shot at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (2101 E. NASA Pkwy). In the movie, when a spacecraft carrying a key invention crashes on the moon, it is the control center in Houston that leads the mission to recover the ship. Gen Xers will have fond memories of Reality Bites (1994), shot in and around Montrose and downtown Houston. The fourplex where Winona Ryder lived is still standing (409 W. Clay Street). Tranquility Park (Rusk at Walker Street) is where Troy (Ethan Hawke) educated Lelaina (Ryder) on the many jobs he’s been fired from over the years. Finally, no movie tour is complete without mentioning Rushmore, directed by Houston’s own Wes Anderson. His high school alma mater, St. John’s School (2401 Claremont Lane), stood in for the movie’s Rushmore Academy. In an example of art mirroring life, the public Lamar High School, across the street from St. John’s (3325 Westheimer Road), was used to depict the movie’s Grover Cleveland High School. The protagonist’s father’s hair-cutting business, “Bert’s,” is really Doug’s Barber Shop (219 East Eleventh Street) in the Heights. It’s still open if you need a trim.

Located in Houston’s Chinatown along Bellaire Boulevard, Crawfish and Noodles is popular with area chefs and foodies alike. Why? The VietCajun crawfish, a spicy Houston mashup that’s been featured on the Travel Channel as well as on Netflix’s Ugly Delicious.
DaMarco
This beautiful, award-winning Montrose mainstay features gourmet Tuscan dishes and a vast selection of fine wines in a chic atmosphere. It’s one of the few fine restaurants in Houston that suggests jacket attire for gentlemen.
Frenchy’s
Houston’s favorite fried chicken (since 1969) – along with dirty rice and jambalaya – uses old, New Orleans family recipes to delight generations of locals. Several locations around town.
Fung’s Kitchen
This cavernous Sharpstown favorite offers a vast array of Chinese dishes, as well as daily dim sum. Six aquariums near the entrance showcase various types of live seafood that the restaurant serves.
For more than 40 years on Kirby Drive, Goode Co. Barbecue has been serving up delicious smoked meats, serious sides and famous pecan pies (which are traditional Houston holiday gifts). For live music, check out their Armadillo Palace across the street.
Hugo’s
Stop in for authentic Mexican cuisine by James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega, handshaken margaritas, and a festive atmosphere – including a lively patio. Don’t miss their legendary Sunday brunch buffet.

Paulie’s
This casual Montrose neighborhood joint offers some of the best Italian food in town, with homemade pasta served daily. Be sure to order the spaghetti and meatballs – but save room for Paulie’s famous iced shortbread cookies.
Star Pizza
Consistently voted Houston’s Best Pizza since 1976, Star is known for its Margherita Pizza, Joe’s Pizza (sautéed spinach in garlic plus fresh garlic), and the Chicken Alfredo Pizza (with chicken, gorgonzola cheese, mushrooms and onions). They also have a daily lunch buffet.
Tony’s
Houston’s most elegant restaurant since 1965, Tony Vallone and his staff are the masters of Italian flavors. In fact, the restaurant has served seven sitting presidents, in addition to generations of Houstonians. Pro tip: The twocourse Express Business Lunch is just $22.
Turkey Leg Hut
Always crowded, always hopping, this is the home of the world-famous stuffed turkey leg. Stuffed with what, you ask? Dirty rice, or maybe jumbo grilled shrimp and Cajun alfredo sauce. How about stuffed with Cajun crawfish mac & cheese? They open at 11 a.m. You’ll want to get there early. For more on local dining, log onto VisitHouston.com/Restaurants

Lola's Depot
Possibly the diviest dive that ever dived, Lola’s purple-painted house is unmarked, but unmistakable. The graffiti-and-bumper-sticker decor is a visual assault. Lola’s has a double happy hour which runs 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., offering beer and cocktails for a mere $1.75.

Its name is “Houston” spelled backwards, and that’s only where the weirdness begins. This eccentric establishment on Main Street serves as a bar/ art/music/poetry/chess venue so come ready for anything, including inexpensive drinks.
Poison Girl Cocktail Lounge
Pretty much a guaranteed good time. The closedoff back patio with an iconic Kool-Aid man statue and daily happy hour specials like $2.00 wells cement Poison Girl as a Montrose institution.

Downtown and Midtown
Houston’s central business district is booming with bars, clubs and lounges. Market Square is the epicenter for fun. Start your night at Secret Garden, a stunning retreat for a drink, located outside of Bravery Chef Hall, in a tiny glass greenhouse with a large patio. Feeling generous? Stop by OKRA Charity Saloon, a co-op founded by industry vets to pursue community and charitable initiatives. Get your tropical tiki fix (order the Painkiller) at Kanaloa and enjoy their Korean-fusion snacks. In Midtown, enjoy serious cocktails in the divey Two Headed Dog or try Social Beer Garden HTX with its hammock garden, dog-friendly patio, and classic arcade games.
Montrose
Traditionally home to “alternative” nightlife and the city’s LGBTQ club scene, Montrose is where you’ll find longtime LGBTQ watering hole JR’s Bar and Grill, plus Rudyard’s live music venue. In the mood for a boozy drag brunch? Then Boheme is your place. The Toasted Coconut is a newish full-service tiki bar and kitchen with an outdoor palapa and “adult sandbox.” For highbrow craft cocktails, head to Anvil Bar and Refuge. Looking for a casual patio bar with craft beer, tasty cocktails and coastal Mexican food? Check out LaGrange.
River Oaks and West University
In between these two affluent neighborhoods, you’ll find Red Lion British Pub, a dark tavern serving pints and Indian fare. Marfreless, hidden away in the River Oaks Shopping Center, serves as a private, dimly lit speakeasy. Over in West University, grab a burger and some
JR's Bar and Grill
wine at Simone on Sunset, drink in the Mexican tiki bar vibe at Under the Volcano or enjoy a whopper of a Long Island Iced Tea at the legendary Marquis 2.
The Heights
One of Houston’s most historic neighborhoods has quickly evolved into a top nightlife destination. Chill out on the patio at Onion Creek with cold local beer and great good. Brush up on your bingo skills at SPJST Lodge 88 or enjoy classic cocktails and tunes at Johnny’s Gold Brick. The Ready Room is a cool speakeasy bar on White Oak Blvd. There’s no sign, but it’s right next door to Ritual, a hip beer-andbeef joint.
Uptown/Galleria
This corporate neighborhood knows how to party. Start off with a cocktail upstairs at Le Colonial in River Oaks District for the nightly people watching party. The Tasting Room at Uptown Park offers more than 150 wines by the glass and bottle, along with truffle fries, charcuterie boards and pizzas. Or go full-on dive at The West End, a dog-friendly beer joint with a fun happy hour.
Washington Ave./Arts District Houston Just outside downtown, this corridor is geared toward young professionals and neighborhood residents alike. The Porch Swing Pub is a chill spot featuring dozens of beers on tap, plus casual pub food and a large patio. MAX’s Wine Dive is an intimate spot serving upscale comfort food as well as champagne and cocktails. For some of the best craft cocktails in town (and a very cool atmosphere), make plans for drinks at Julep.

Outdoors WITH MORE THAN 300 MILES OF TRAILS, 165 public and private golf courses and 50,632 acres of parkland, Houston offers endless opportunities to soak up the great outdoors.
EXPLORE Channel your inner ecotourist inside
the Loop at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center – open daily with free admission. The 155-acre preserve features shaded hiking trails, wildlife and classes for all ages. For more area scenery, kayak or canoe through the meandering channels of Armand Bayou Nature Center or go birding along the Upper Texas Coast Wildlife Trail.
Discovery Green
Buffalo Bayou Park, Cullen Park, Terry Hershey Park and the Rice University jogging trail are also among locals’ faves. Challenge yourself and run the hills at Spotts Park just outside downtown.
LOUNGE Skip the workout and kick back instead at Discovery Green, McGovern Centennial Gardens or Emancipation Park, the crown jewel of Third Ward near UH. Don’t miss the Upper Kirby District’s 5.9 acre Levy Park with dog park, community gardens, a performance pavilion, event lawn and a sprawling playground.
RUN Crank up the cardio with health-conscious Houstonians at Memorial Park. The 1,500acre urban expanse offers more than just golf, swimming, tennis, hiking and cycling—it also contains 20 miles of trails. Jonesing for more?
