WINE COUNTRY

irginia’s rich wine history dates back more than four centuries; it was in 1984 when Loudoun welcomed its first winery – Willowcroft Farm Vineyards. Lew Parker planted the first grapes for Willowcroft in 1981 on the slopes of his farm that, in the 1800s, were successfully planted with orchards. Loudoun’s fertile soil and temperate climate proved fruitful and soon after, other winemakers followed in his footsteps.

Loudoun’s Popular Varietals Chardonnay: A medium to full-bodied dry white wine with fruit characters of citrus, apples, pear, or tropical. Cabernet Franc: A medium bodied red wine known for its spiciness and herbal characters. Norton: A native Virginia grape that is dark in color and its fruity flavors may include plums and tart cherries. Viognier: The signature wine grape for Virginia has more natural aromatics compared to Chardonnay including notes of peach, pears, violets. Blends: The art of the winemaker is often shown in a blend of different grapes just as a chef would use different spices. Ask about the grapes used when tasting these special wines. Other varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Tanat, Traminette, White Bordeaux.

LoCo Ale T

Virginians have been producing wine for more than 400 years but the craft beer industry is making waves across the Commonwealth, including in Loudoun, which has more breweries than any county in Virginia. Old Dominion Brewing Company was Loudoun’s first brewery in 1989 but it wasn’t until 2011 when Lost Rhino Brewing Company opened its doors that the beer scene began to truly emerge. Today, experience more than 200 brews across 25 breweries along the LoCo Ale Trail. Loudoun pairs modern breweries along its urban eastern corridor with rural breweries in the west that are situated on farms and pastures nestled at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Loudoun’s breweries match their local surroundings as places like Beltway Brewing, Old Ox Brewery and Ocelot Brewing Company in the east offer large tasting rooms and refreshing beers close to Washington, DC while further west, Dirt Farm Brewing and Old 690 Brewing Company offer visitors a chance to see firsthand where the hops and beer’s other ingredients are grown. The agricultural side of beer production is an integral part of Loudoun’s beer story. In 2015 the Mid-Atlantic’s first commercial hops processing facility opened at Black Hops Farm, which is now also home to Vanish

Catoctin Creek Distillery produces award-winning spirits from the town of Purcellville and was the first distillery in the county since prohibition. Celebrated owners Scott and Becky Harris are happy to pour a flight featuring their popular Roundstone Rye. A Cider a Day Keeps the Doctor Away Corcoran Vineyards and Cidery in Waterford, Wild Hare Hard Cider in Leesburg and Mt. Defiance Cidery and Distillery in Middleburg lead the charge for the Loudoun cideries. As with everything in Loudoun, expect handcrafted perfection. If you are looking to try something different, Mr. Defiance’s Ginger Cider, and the PoPo Peach from Corcoran are exceptional choices. At Wild Hare, the owners feature everything from classic dry to modern ciders infused with hops and herbs.

entral Loudoun is the heart of the county and has the most complete collection of history, entertainment, wining and dining to be found in Northern Virginia. The district is bookended by grand homes with Historic Morven Park in the north and Oatlands Historic House and Gardens in the south and the Marshall House in downtown Leesburg. All around the district you will find everything from live performance venues and aquatics centers to premium shopping outlets and the “Beermuda Triangle”. Leesburg, Loudoun’s county seat since 1757, dominates the landscape of Central Loudoun. To begin exploring a town with such deep roots, it may be best to start at the Thomas Balch Library, which houses a wealth of genealogy and local historical information. The history lesson can then continue to Balls Bluff Battlefield Regional Park to observe the interpretive markers of the area’s largest Civil War engagement. An easy afternoon stroll through historic downtown’s brick-lined sidewalks will uncover boutiques and unique local favorites. Walking down King Street you’ll find buildings that exude history. Dine at the beautiful Lightfoot Restaurant, located in the former Peoples National Bank that dates back to 1888, grab a drink at a former shoe store turned quirky coffee shop and browse numerous antique shops that have made Leesburg’s historical buildings home. Don’t forget to visit Delirium Café for a glass of the well-known Belgium beer. An entertainment staple in historic downtown Leesburg, the Tally Ho Theatre was built in 1932 as a motion picture and performing arts venue. Operating continuously since its inception, the theatre was recently renovated and opened as a concert hall to host live music from national acts, theater, and other special events. Just outside downtown Leesburg lies Lansdowne Resort & Spa -one of the premier resorts in

Mark and Vicki Fedor’s English Tudor style winery is the only winery in Loudoun that is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified by the US Green Building Council. The region extends to the west towards the village of Bluemont, with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as a spectacular backdrop. If there was an official capital of horse country in America, it would be Middleburg. This small town of about 600 residents has held undisputed claim to this title since the early 20th century when wealthy sporting enthusiasts and their horses and hounds claimed the town and its lush rolling countryside as many famous riders have rubbed elbows in Middleburg, including the late philanthropist and

sportsman Paul Mellon, President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Today, downtown Middleburg features boutiques and specialty gift shops that offer an old-world feel. If there is a special furry friend in your family, this is a great place to bring them along for the weekend. Kriserâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Natural Pet specializes in the health and well being of dogs and cats, and many of the shops and restaurants have water bowls and treats waiting for them.

outhern Loudoun is the heart of horse country, with the town of Middleburg fitting prominently into the landscape. Middleburg got its name from being midway on the Winchester-to-Alexandria trading route known as Ashby Gap Road, which is now Route 50. Along present day Route 50 you will find rolling hills covered with vineyards and grazing pastures for the many championship horses that share the land with the locals.

Southern Loudoun is rich in Civil War and equestrian heritage. The two come together when considering that Middleburg was the base of operations and hide out for John Mosby, the legendary “Gray Ghost” of the Confederacy. Mosby’s 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry were known as “Mosby’s Rangers,” or “Mosby’s Raiders,” and gained notoriety for conducting daring raids on Federal supply lines in the area.

Salamander Resort & Spa now stands. The resort celebrates its equestrian heritage all across its grand 340-acre estate. The back lawn features a lifesize chess set for those who want to simultaneously exercise their mind and body, and a fire pit to help prolong your foliage-filled fall excursion. Just past the Philomont General Store in South Western Loudoun you’ll find the Village of Unison. Here, in 1862 J.E.B. Stuart and a small band of Confederate cavalry held off an advance from George McCellan’s Federal forces, allowing Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia time to establish a stronghold further south in Culpeper. Bluemont sits on the western edge of the county. The town was founded in the early 1800s and was originally called Snickersville. On the 4th of July in 1900, railroad service from the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad was extended to the village, which was promoted as a cool mountain retreat to Washingtonians looking to escape the capital’s summer heat. Bluemont still draws crowds today for its annual Bluemont Fair featuring traditional and country music, skilled artisans, antiques and local artists. Aldie Harvest Festival, in Southern Loudoun highlights local artisans and rural heritage and is held annually in October. The event offers visitors the opportunity to tour the historic Aldie Mill, as well as peruse through antique treasures while enjoying legendary sandwiches and fresh baked goods from Little Apple Pastry Shop.

astern Loudoun is the county gateway as travelers are venturing from the Washington, DC area. Bustling with vibrant young neighborhoods and modern amenities, Eastern Loudoun has much to offer visitors of all ages. The vast spread of restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues are seamlessly paired with regional parks, scenic trails and nature preserves. Here you’ll find the majority of the county’s accommodations, which makes it a great option for a base camp as you explore all the area has to offer.

Sterling was the first major planned community in Loudoun, spurned by the completion of Dulles International Airport in the 1960’s. Along with the major residential development that has defined the area also came the construction of many national hotel chains. The hotels offer a great launching point for attractions not only in Loudoun, but also for day trips into nearby Washington, DC. In Sterling you’ll find Dulles Town Center where there is not only great shopping, but also frequent

special events. The shopping center features a brand new Regal Cinema with king-size recliner chairs to enhance your movie experience. Winding through Ashburn and Sterling is the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park, which replaced the railroad tracks that once connected the area to the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital. The W&OD allows you to explore Loudoun in a way that you would never see while sitting in a car. If you are along the trail, there are great spots to rest or grab a bite to eat, including Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque. While the other regions in Loudoun may be dominated by wine, brewing reigns supreme in the East. Lost Rhino Brewing Company, Old Ox Brewery and Beltway Brewing Company all feature tasting rooms so you can test the beers on site before deciding which one to fill your growler with. The breweries will often have live music and special events on the weekends, so be sure to call or check their websites before planning your trip.

Lovettsville, Lucketts & Waterford

orthern Loudoun stretches from the fertile banks of the Potomac River down to Route 7 on its southern border. Here you will find cozy towns tucked away down winding country roads and incredible vistas overlooking the river. If you like the finer things in life, you can find championship golf and world-class wine. If a slower pace is more to your liking, the historic Village of Waterford will transport you to a simpler time and place.

To explore Northern Loudoun, take historic Route 15 north from the county seat of Leesburg. This road is a scenic two-lane highway, lined with farms and houses, rolling fields and mountain views. It was once a Native American trail, known as the Great Warrior’s Path, and was favored by Algonquin and Iroquois for its springs and milder weather east of the mountains. Today it is named the James Monroe Highway, after the nation’s fifth president, who lived on Route 15 just south of Leesburg. A highlight of the region is the historic Village of Waterford, founded by Quakers in 1733. The entire village is a National Historic Landmark, the highest honorary designation bestowed by the US Department of the Interior. It is a testament to the residents who have diligently preserved not only the settlement’s historic structures, but the surrounding land as well. The two other towns in Northern Loudoun, Lovettsville and Lucketts, offer a wealth of antique stores and unique gift shops that can fill an entire afternoon of exploring and browsing. Be sure to save time for The Old Lucketts Store, a restored general store turned antique treasure-trove that dates back to 1879. Lovettsville is known as the German Settlement and is Loudoun’s northernmost town. Lucketts is a must see, particularly if you are in search for vintage styles and antiques. The fairs and antique markets bring out the best vendors from the region and are often packed with visitors, so be sure to arrive early to secure the day’s best steals.

Hillsboro | Purcellville E

ntering Loudoun from the west on Route 7, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll pass through Snickers Gap, a wind gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains and historically a major thoroughfare between the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley. The towns of Round Hill, Purcellville, and Hillsboro make up Western Loudoun that is distinguished by its historic winding roads and scenic countryside views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Purcellville is the largest town in Western Loudoun and has a great collection of shops, local restaurants and breweries, as well as performing and visual arts centers. The town may have no landmark more famous than Nichols Hardware. This family store has been operating for over 100 years, still using handwritten receipts like when they opened their doors in December of 1914. Craft beer connoisseurs will find half a dozen breweries in the heart of Purcellville and beyond, spreading into Western Loudoun. Bring the family to Belly Love Brewing for trivia nights or see the hops growing at Old 690 Brewing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one of the first farm breweries in Loudoun. At Adroit Theory Brewing Company, brewmasters experiment with everything from maple syrup and chocolate to pineapple and even fruit loops. The brewers always have a new concoction waiting for you, making this stop great for every return trip to the county. Hillsboro is Loudounâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smallest town, with its most contemporary structure dating to the late 1800s. Named appropriately for its geography, the wineries

around Hillsboro offer some of the best views in the county. From the terrace outside Hillsborough Vineyards, visitors experience luxuriant gardens and trickling fountains, dramatically framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Western Loudoun offers multiple access points to the Appalachian Trail, which makes it ideal for day hikes or as a rest and recovery stop for through hikers. If you continue north along the trail you will come across Harpers Ferry Adventure Center in the far northwest of the county. The outdoor adventure possibilities are endless and there is plenty to fill an entire weekend, but to do this area justice, it is best to make a weekend out of it. If you plan to overnight in Western Loudoun, selecting from one of its B&Bs is your best option. Silverbrook Farm is a charming country bed and breakfast nestled between the Blue Ridge and Short Hill mountains. Fieldstone Farm is a 1770s Quaker built stone manor house on 30 acres that features an outdoor heated swimming pool with spectacular views of the mountains.

Here, the chef transforms the farm’s foraged organic foods into gastronomic works of art that come to life on your plate. Menus change monthly and daily adjustments are made based on what the gardens are producing. RESTAURANTS Willow Creek Farm. Dining rooms feature original artwork, historic artifacts and a collection of 18th century horse-drawn carriages. True to its name, Clyde’s is located on a working farm where its team of chefs draws inspiration for the classic tavern menu. Ford’s Fish Shack Enjoy delicious New England-style seafood at this restaurant, which has two locations in Loudoun. The restaurant prides itself on serving the freshest lobster, crabs, oysters and other seafood favorites alongside classic American fare. Mokomandy This restaurant features a minimalist, modern dining room, offers a unique mix of Korean and Cajun cuisine. “Modern Korean by Mandy” is the source of the Mokomandy name, honoring the mother of owner Thaddeus Kim. The child of a Cajun mother and a Korean father, Kim’s mother prepared both cuisines for the family.

Lightfoot Restaurant Housed in the former turn-of-the century Peoples National Bank building in downtown Leesburg, Lightfoot’s exterior is impressive, historic and elegant while the interior features high ceilings adorned with original 1920s French posters, a large marble staircase and the former bank vault, which now houses the restaurant’s award-winning wine list. The menu is described as “modern American seasonal with an international twist”. Kevin Malone has been a leader in the “buy local” movement since opening the restaurant in 1985 and has continued that practice at his now four Loudoun restaurants. Housed in a 19th century grain mill in historic downtown Leesburg, even the Tuskie’s building honors Loudoun’s agricultural history. Goodstone Inn & Restaurant Nestled on 265 acres of Loudoun’s countryside, Goodstone is a destination in itself. The inn sits on Snake Hill Farm, a Virginia getaway since the 1930s, and the intimate dining room is located in the 1930s-era carriage house. Goodstone features a 250- label wine list and a menu that highlights what is raised and grown right on the farm. The Red Fox Inn & Tavern Originally built in 1728, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is the oldest continually operated inn in the US and has hosted famous guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Today, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and each of its dining rooms has an ambience that exudes history. The culinary team creates a menu that highlights local ingredients using time honored techniques of smoking, braising, and roasting.

Grandale Vintner’s Table Look for the rustic hay wagon marking the entrance to Grandale, located on a working farm and vineyard – 868 Estate Vineyards. Don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you – this is elegant country dining with food as fresh as it gets. Guests are encouraged to walk the farm, and dine at one of the outdoor pergolas or on the 32-seat deck. Magnolias at the Mill “Maggie’s” as the locals prefer, is housed in a circa 1905 restored mill; the millworks are still visible throughout the restaurant, lending a rustic feel to the otherwise elegant dining rooms. Rita and John Kent Cooke’s Boxwood Winery is a stunning architectural gem nestled in the vineyard of Boxwood Farm. The 175-acre property is a National Historic Landmark, which was one of the earliest horse farms in Middleburg. Five blends are produced in the Bordeaux tradition at this state-of-the-art facility. All wines are made with 100% estate grown fruit grown from nearly 27 acres of vines. History Begin your trip through time on Loudoun’s Civil War Trail, a state-wide system that escorts visitors through historic roadbeds that served as battle routes for armies of both sides during the Civil War. With its location just 25 miles from the nation’s capital, Loudoun typified the Civil War on the border, dividing citizens and families according to their loyalties to the North and South. Some of the Civil War trail stops include the site of the 1861 Battle of Ball’s Bluff, a former Confederate encampment at Morven Park and a Union cemetery in Leesburg. Another must-visit stop for Civil War buffs is Aldie Mill, which was the site of a March 1863 clash

between Col. John Mosby and Federal cavalry that became known as the Aldie Races. Loudoun’s rich history extends far beyond the Civil War. While here, stroll through historic towns including the Village of Waterford, which is one of the few National Landmark Villages in the nation, and Leesburg – the county seat since 1757. While in Leesburg, explore the circa 1804 Federal-style mansion and extensive gardens at Oatlands Historic House & Gardens or visit the home of former Virginia Gov. Westmoreland Davis at Morven Park.

Leesburg is also the place one of the most influential men of the 20th century called home. George C. Marshall, a five-star general, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, was the author of the “Marshall Plan,” which aimed to revitalize Europe after World War II. His home, known as the Marshall House, is open for public tours. Besides a winter home in North Carolina, it was the only home he and his wife ever owned together.

Hunt Country The National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg is a research library and art museum that preserves, celebrates, and shares the art, literature and culture of horse and field sports. For the horse enthusiasts who prefer to experience the sensation of riding for themselves, the Virginia International Polo Club in Upperville offers guests the opportunity to learn to play polo, while Serene Acres in Bluemont provides English riding instruction and trail rides. Tours and shows can be found throughout the year in the Middleburg area. The Upperville Colt & Horse Show, held at the magnificent Grafton and Salem Farms, is the oldest horse show in the country, dating to 1853. Steeped in tradition, it extends a full seven days, and involves over 2,000 horse and rider combinations from young children on ponies to leading Olympic and World Cup riders and horses. The Hunt County Stable Tour is held on Memorial Day weekend when more than a dozen private horse estates and equine facilities open their doors to the public.
