At this time last year, we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of our mission and ministry in Brazil, South America. Now, a year later, we are in the middle of the yearlong celebration leading up to the 150th anniversary of the founding of our Congregation on August 2, 1865, by Mother Alfred Moes.

In September, several Sisters joined former students of Sacred Heart School in Chicago at their annual reunion. One of our Sisters, Sister Pauline Ann Furiel, was in a!endance. She is 93 years old and had the time of her life seeing familiar, though “slightly” older, faces of students. Also in September, the University of St. Francis honored the many Sisters who served at the institution from its beginning as Assisi Junior College in 1925.

On the weekend of November 8 and 9 almost 40 Sisters and Associates gathered in South/Central Illinois to visit St. Michael in Sigel, St. Mary Help of Christians in Green Creek, Sacred Heart in Lillyville, and St. Francis of Assisi in Teutopolis where we have ministered since 1879. We closed with a special Mass and reception at St. Michael. Sister Mary Frances Seeley said the weekend was “fantastic.”

She visited with former students who recounted stories of their years with her as their teacher. One student even remembered Sister Mary Fran (then Sister Catherine Ann) giving her the History Prize over some of the boys!

These are just a few of the anniversary events that have taken place so far. There are many more to come, and we will keep you aware as they are scheduled. Our big celebration takes place on Sunday, August 2, 2015, in Joliet at the Cathedral of St. Raymond with Bishop Daniel Conlon presiding. More details will be forth coming.

This is the time when we say, “Where did the year go?” I hope that when you look back on the past 12 months, you feel both a sense of accomplishment and one of peace. We thank you for your generosity of spirit and the many ways in which you support our Congregation. You are in the daily prayers of the Sisters.

The 26th Annual Franciscan Autumn Feast is already on the calendar for Sunday, October 25, 2015, at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion in Joliet. Earlier in the year is the 3rd Annual “Afternoon Tea at the Abbey” scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2015, at the Jacob Henry Mansion, which is also in Joliet. We hope to see you at our events.

As you know, the Sisters are journeying towards the 150th anniversary of their founding in 1865 by Mother Alfred Moes. There will be a big celebration in Joliet on August 2, 2015. Throughout this year, however, visits are taking place at schools and parishes where the Sisters have ministered over the course of their history. Visiting classrooms, churches and reconnecting with former students and old friends is making this an exciting and heartwarming year for the Sisters.

The Sisters appreciate your generous response to the 2014 Appeals. I ask you to continue your support in 2015 by making a gift in honor of the Sisters’ 150th Anniversary through our 2015 Appeals which will arrive in your mailboxes throughout the year.

Meet My Ministry Meet Sister Mary Lou Marchetti OSF. She serves as a volunteer at Daybreak Shelter in Joliet and is also an artist.

As the Communications Director for the Sisters, I had the opportunity to shadow Sister Mary Lou and take photos as she met with some of Daybreak’s clients. The people at Daybreak enjoy talking to Sister Mary Lou and are happy she is there to listen and pray with them. “She is God’s presence here,” said Tina, a Daybreak client. “I am glad she comes and sits with us.”

his year our Congregation has chosen to emphasize a “ministry of presence.” Reflecting on this focus has helped me to realize how much my past ministries have taught me about presence. I want to share with you how the ministry of presence has become a reality in my life.

After serving in a variety of ministries in schools, parishes, Notre Dame University, and hospice, I discovered what I believe to be my true calling: it is to minister among those who are homeless.

realized what a ministry of presence really meant, and I began to search for ways that I could begin to serve God’s people. I have discovered two ways to continue my ministry of presence: through art and through Daybreak Shelter.

A ministry of presence calls me to prayer and stillness. I have discovered that for me art is an expression of my spirituality. Now that I have the time, I have been able to develop a series of watercolor cards for various occasions. I hope they bring joy and love of creation to others.

In the 1980s, in uptown Chicago, I had the privilege of walking the streets, meeting the homeless, spending time with them, sometimes directing them to helpful services. I spent several years at Sarah’s Circle, a homeless shelter for women. There I was simply PRESENCE for them – listening, trying to respond to their needs, and even teaching art classes for them.

It has been in existence Ch since around 1984. Daybreak si houses about one hundred clients ho wh are in need of a home. There who are 16 beds for men and 20 for women and children. The others

Some have addictions, are on jail release, are abused by family or others, or are single women with children. They come looking for help and are assigned a case worker who evaluates their situation. They are then allowed various lengths of stay, or they stay until they get a job and can afford rent, or find a family member or friend to take them in – these are the lucky ones. A large number live on the streets, ride the bus, wander around Joliet looking for a corner where they can rest, hide, sleep, or look for a “hand-out.”

The general population that does not live at the shelter walk to the “Shepherd’s Table” for a meal at noon, and they are back out on the streets the rest of the day. During the winter, in sub-zero temperatures, many stay at Daybreak or other warming centers. Several of our Sisters and Associates are very dedicated and come regularly to prepare and serve meals for the homeless.

When I go to Daybreak as a volunteer, I am considered a Pastoral Counselor. I sit with each person and offer her or him a listening ear and my presence, my spiritual support and prayer. I especially look for the most recent arrivals as I feel they need me the most. They may be frightened, anxious, fearful of their new surroundings, frustrated after losing their home, job, or a loved one who took care of them. My heart breaks, as I know yours would, too.

I listen to their stories and I put their names in my special book of prayer. I offer them my prayers and the prayers of my Sisters and Associates. Following are some of their stories: Travis is a high school senior. His parents evicted him because they wanted him to pay rent and he couldn’t find a job. When he went back to the house to get his birth certificate, his IDs, and other papers, his parents refused to give them to him.

Charles immediately told me that he is a Roman Catholic, had been an altar server, collects cans for sixty cents a pound, lives in a tent, has throat cancer, and has had four surgeries. Radiation destroyed his hearing and his teeth. He was hit while riding his bike and has plates in his legs and elbow. Four times he applied for disability assistance, and four times he was denied.

Sue has six children; four are at the shelter with her and two are with her mother. She is sick and her husband is in jail. She had been staying with her sister-in-law who took her money and belongings.

Sue sought help and moved to Daybreak.

I am truly humbled and inspired by everyone I meet at the shelter. I am moved by their stories, their faith and hope, and their belief that God is with them.

One dear man said to me, “Jesus had no place to lay his head.” What more needs to be said?

Annual Reflection Fiscal Year 2013-2014

All Is Gift Annual Reflection Fiscal Year July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014

Read any definition of the word “gift” and it says a gift is anything given or a talent. With that definition in mind, we have been generously blessed with gifts in the fiscal year which ended in June.

Brazilian Ministry Celebrates 50 Years In 1963, responding to the call of Pope John XXIII, the Joliet Franciscan Sisters founded a mission in Santa Helena, Brazil. Armed with a barely passing knowledge of Portuguese and not quite knowing what to do once they arrived, four Joliet Franciscan Sisters began a ministry of presence that continues to flourish today. In December 2014, 17 Sisters and one Associate, all from the U.S., traveled to Brazil and over the next several days traveled to the cities and towns where the Sisters have ministered over 50 years. Everywhere the Sisters went, they were greeted warmly and with the same love that has grown between the Brazilian Joliet Franciscans and the people whom they serve. The celebration culminated on December 18 with a Mass and dinner attended by 800 townspeople. It was a wonderful gift which will remain in our hearts for years to come.

We are grateful to our Sisters and benefactors who helped make travel to Brazil from the U.S. possible through their gifts of financial support and airline miles.

Sisters Celebrate Jubilee!

On June 21, we celebrated the Jubilees of twelve of our Sisters. Each of our Jubilarians is a gift to our Congregation in her own special way. Many of our Jubilarians ministered as teachers. Some found second, third and even fourth “careers” in other ministries. Every year, we ask the Jubilarians to tell us about a special memory or ministry and what living the Franciscan life means to them. Each answer is as unique as the Sister is herself.

Whether serving in schools, social service organizations, hospitals, parishes or as volunteers, 60-year Jubilarian Sister Patricia Mitchell says it best, “All has been gift!”

Guardian Angel Home Begins a New Chapter If you are familiar with the history of the Joliet Franciscans, you know that our first mission was Guardian Angel Home founded in 1865 as an orphanage. It was very special to us. In 1925, Guardian Angel Home moved into its location on the corner of Theodore Street and Plainfield Road. Over the years as the needs of the times changed, and Guardian Angel Home became Guardian Angel Community Services (GACS). No longer operating as an orphanage, GACS continued to focus on children, but extended programs to address the needs of the family as well. In the latter half of 2013, we made the decision to sell the Guardian Angel Home building. You might wonder how this would be considered a gift, but it is. We were able to sell the building to the University of St. Francis (USF), another of our earlier missions. USF is relocating some of its administration offices to the building, as well as the John and Cecily Leach College of Nursing. Remaining part of our Franciscan family, the building is now known as St. Clare Campus – Guardian Angel Home. Knowing that our core ministry of education will continue to flourish and grow in a building that was an important part of our history is indeed a gift to our Congregation.

At Journey’s End During this past fiscal year, eleven Sisters received the greatest gift any of us can receive: the gift of eternal life. All came to the Congregation at different times, sometimes from different circumstances, but all for the same reason – to serve God and His people. They were all teachers. They were teachers in both grade and high schools. They were teachers at the College of St. Francis, now the University of St. Francis. They were teachers in adult and religious education classes. More importantly, they were always learning.

We fondly remember: Sister Mary Ann (Mary Lawrence) Glascott, 1937 – 2013; Sister Anne Marie (Grace Cecile) Furiel, 1925 – 2013; Sister M. Alcuin Kelly, 1917 – 2013; Sister Patricia (Mary Frances de Sales) David, 1937 – 2013; Sister Tecla (Mary Cephas) Snyder, 1923 – 2013; Sister June (Donald Marie) Marshall, 1934 – 2013; Sister Rita (Mary Alexander) Greene, 1919 – 2013; Sister Kathleen Kirk, 1916 – 2014; Sister Marianne (Mary Deborah) Cardosi, 1930 – 2014; and Sister Andrea Prindes, 1922 – 2014.

These eleven dedicated Sisters were a gift to our Congregation and to all whose lives were impacted by their very presence.

The Gift of You We have all heard the phrase “good things come in small packages.” We can all agree that an envelope is a small package. But be assured that what is inside each envelope is anything but small. There is no such thing as a small gift. Every single gift we receive is important and respected as is the individual or organization sending it to us. Connections In our last two issues of Confiança, we shared the connections Margaret Benoit and Sal DiLeo have with the Joliet Franciscan Sisters. We asked our readers to share their connections with us. Marjorie Wiemels did! Although she is the younger sister of Sister Ann Freiburg, a Joliet Franciscan Sister, Marjorie’s first connection with the Sisters began when she was just five years old.

My dear older sister is Sister Ann Freiburg, OSF, a member of the Congregation. Ann joined the Joliet Franciscans in 1959, after a few years of teaching in California. I was a junior at the College of St. Francis at that time. We were so close yet so far since we were both at the same place. At that time, we were not allowed to talk and sightings were scarce because she was a novice and those were the rules.

It was not until after she finished her novice years and the rules were changed that Ann reconnected with our family. She has appeared at every First Communion, wedding, funeral and reunion since then.

But my connection to the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate goes back even longer! It is 1944 or 1945. I am five years old. I am si ing in the auditorium at the College of St. Francis where my parents have brought me (our home was in Lombard, Illinois) to see a play, “The Barre s of Wimpole Street.” The lights go down, the curtain goes up, and there is the Barre family si ing in their homey living room. And then – lo and behold – a peaceful snow begins to fall behind the window, right there on the stage! It is magical. I am mesmerized. It was a moment I never forgot. The director escaped me then and now, but it may have been Sister LaVerne Relli, who directed so many wonderful plays. I am told that Sister Claire Edward Whalen helped with the snow. After the play my parents visited with the Sisters and we were probably the last to leave, starting a tradition that lasted many years, as my sisters Be y, Mary and Ann all a ended the College of St. Francis.

When it was time for me to go to college, where else would I be happiest but at the College of St.

Francis where I had already spent so many happy hours. Most of the classes were taught by the Sisters, and they did their very best to educate me.

I became devoted to Sr. Chrysantha Hoefling and Sr. Anita Marie Jochem in the English department, loved choir with Sr. Raphael Wand, and chorus with Sr. Cecilia Downey. Art was fun with Sr. Alexander Greene. Many a life lesson was conveyed

by Sr. Rose Agnes Zollner in religion class. Sr. Beatrice Schiller did her best to civilize me.

I majored in English, but having such impressive teachers, I did not think I had the stuff to follow in their footsteps. Sister Anita Marie thought otherwise. Could the fact that she was my father’s cousin have influenced her judgment? She advised me to apply for an assistantship in the English Department at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio.

I demurred, but she was not taking “no” for an answer. Reluctantly I did apply, and when other classmates received their acceptances and I didn’t get one, I thought I had escaped. But no, there was a second mailing, and my acceptance arrived.

What a challenge! I decided that I must try this opportunity that Sr. Anita Marie had put in motion for me and I made plans to relocate to Ohio.

A few weeks before my move to Cleveland a few of my classmates, Annamay Corbe among them, persuaded me to join them for a vacation at the Jack and Jill Ranch in Michigan. While there AnnaWINTER 2015

Associates’ Corner may and I made the acquaintance of a young man from Cleveland, Gene Wiemels. What a coincidence! He lived in Cleveland and I was about to move there.

Shortly after I got to Cleveland, I was called upon to represent the College of St. Francis at a college fair at Magnificat High School on the other side of town. I had no car, so I called my new friend Gene to ask for a ride. He gave me a ride and we chatted about school. It turned out that he was taking a night school graduate course at his alma mater, John Carroll, at the same time that I was teaching an introductory course. Gene offered to give me a ride back to the Cogans’ home, where I was renting a room, after every class. It turned out to be a fateful means of transportation. We were engaged

by Christmas and married the following year, 1961.

We are fond of saying that John Carroll brought us together but bu it never would wo have happened ha if Sr. Anita Marie Ma had not insisted that in I submit that application.

Our Associate Eleanora Podoske died on September 4, 2014. She was born and raised in Murray City, a small mining town in Ohio. She was the last of nine children. Eleanora later married and she and her husband, John, moved to Rockbridge, Ohio. They had three daughters and were the proud grandparents of six.

After forty-four years of marriage, Eleanora’s husband tragically died in a tractor accident.

Three years later her daughter Cecilia died of cancer. Eleanora said it was her faith in God that brought her through this terrible time.

While a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church in Logan, Ohio, Eleanora was involved in many activities: she was a Mass greeter, visited the sick in hospitals, worked as a sacristan in preparing the altar and worship area, baked for various parish events, and was a member of many commi"ees.

For years Eleanora lived on nine acres of land which she took care of herself after her husband died. She enjoyed gardening, and throughout the summer furnished the altars of St. John’s with the flowers from her garden. Eleanora later moved to Carlin House in Logan, Ohio.

Sister Agnes Goode, who died in June 2013, introduced Eleanora to the Associate relationship in our Congregation, became her Companion Sister and was a great inspiration to her. Although Eleanora was 76 in 2001 when she made her commitment as an Associate, her high energy and religious spirit affected all those with whom she came in contact.

We are grateful for the years Eleanora spent as an Associate.

At Journey’s End Sister Mary (Dominica) Olivieri, OSF April 17, 1928 - August 17, 2014

S

ister Mary was born on April 17, 1928, in Mansfield, Ohio. She was the oldest of four children. Sister Mary’s parents, Joseph and Dominica, were both born in Italy and spoke only Italian in the family home. Her early family life was enriched by Italian customs and culture as well as a deep faith shared by her parents. Sister Mary fondly recalled their yearly trips to the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio, for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Sister Mary’s love for cooking was passed on by her mother who also taught her daughter the art of gardening. Her cooking skills were appreciated by many of the Sisters with whom she lived. The faith life fostered in her family and her years at St. Peter’s School in Mansfield may have been the seeds of her call to become a Sister of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate. Arriving in Joliet in 1947 as a postulant, Sister Mary’s dream was shortlived. Her mother’s illness made it necessary for her to return home. After her mother’s death in August 1948, she began working and even bought a car. Those who knew her also knew about her love for driving and her determination and decisiveness to do what she knew had to be done.

But the Lord again began to speak in the depths of her heart.

She responded to the call and re-entered the postulancy in January 1954. This time her dream would be fulfilled. In August 1954, she became a novice, Sister Mary Dominica, taking the name of her beloved mother. First vows followed in 1956 and final vows in 1959.

Sister Mary would receive her bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Francis and her post-graduate work would be done at the Universities of Dayton, Ohio State and Toledo.

Her years in ministry revealed a woman of multiple talents.

Sister Mary taught in several grade schools in Ohio, Illinois and California. She also assumed the principal’s role in several grade schools. She had a special love for math and for high school teaching.

When Sister Mary’s father became ill after moving to California in search of a warmer climate, Sister Mary moved to San Diego and began teaching at St. Charles School to care for him. When it became evident that he needed to go back to Mansfield, her sister, Sister Rose Olivieri, RSM, also came to California to help out. How would they get their father back home? Sister Mary went to a local car dealer and asked his help. He agreed to have her drive a car from California to the East Coast, stopping in Mansfield to bring her father home.

Sister Mary did all the driving on this trip - evidence of her determination, devotion to family and love for driving.

Throughout her life, Sister Mary pondered God’s will for her in her heart. She was her own person and followed through with determination once she made a decision. When she was struck with a debilitating disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Sister Mary’s determination and decisive nature once again came to her rescue as she struggled to become independent. Her family recalls that their offers of assistance were often met with a simple, “I can manage.” And manage she did. Finally, when Sister Mary arrived at Mohun Hall, she entered totally into life there. One Sister in residence remarked, “She won our hearts!”

Sister Mary never went to an activity without inviting another person to go with her. That was her ministry of presence!

Sister Mary died on August 17, 2014. We give thanks to God for the gift of our Sister Mary.

At Journey’s End Sister Anne (M. Consuela) Flaska, OSF December 6, 1919 - September 14, 2014

orn on December 6, 1919, Sister Anne was welcomed by her parents Mary (Turkan) and John Flaska. Raised on the near north side of Chicago, Sister Anne was one of six children and an energetic member of her hard-working and faithfilled family. Ever mindful of her immigrant roots, Sister Anne embraced her Slovak cultural heritage with great enthusiasm, pride and joy. Educated at Sacred Heart School in Chicago, she took advantage of every opportunity made available to her. It was at Sacred Heart that Sister Anne’s lifelong passion for teaching was inspired, nurtured and encouraged.

At Journey’s End Sister M. Sharon Kerscher, OSF September 19, 1926 - September 24, 2014

R

osemary Cecilia Kerscher was born on September 19, 1926, to her parents, Valentine and Martha (Schmidt) Kerscher. She was one of nine children and lived in an area of Columbus, Ohio, known as German Village. She was educated by the Joliet Franciscan Sisters at St. Mary Grade School and High School in Columbus. However, even before she entered the first grade she was familiar with the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate being the niece of Sister Siena Schmidt, her mother’s sister.

After graduating from high school in June 1944, Rosemary expressed a desire to enter the Franciscan Congregation in Joliet, Illinois, but her parents asked her to work a year or two before she followed her heart’s desire. She honored their wishes and worked in an office for two years. On September 4, 1946, Rosemary, with the blessing of her parents, entered the postulancy of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate in Joliet.

When she became a novice nearly a year later, she received the name of Sister Mary Sharon. She professed her temporary vows on August 12, 1949, and perpetual vows three years later.

Having grown up with eight siblings, Sister Sharon was blessed with many nieces and nephews. She loved children, and with great enthusiasm, embarked on a teaching career that would span 40 years. The last 20 years of teaching were at Corpus Christi School in Columbus. Summers were spent with the Head Start Program in Joliet where she was devoted to giving underprivileged children a strong foundation in reading skills.

Sister Sharon was known as a creative woman. A look into her tidy, organized classroom always found colorful alphabet decorations and attractive bulletin boards. She was often asked by the Sister in charge of the convent to make some special decorations for the holidays. Christmas often found the convent community room transformed into a winter wonderland. While

teaching at St. Peter’s Grade ade School in Mansfield, Ohi Ohio, she volunteered to help with designing and making costumes for the high school plays. Her creative energies were later channeled to baking. She baked and decorated cakes for every occasion. Anytime someone needed something special, Sister Sharon was there to create it with great love and joy. Every Christmas season she baked hundreds of cookies of numerous varieties to give to her family, her friends, and even her doctors.

In 1989, Sister Sharon retired from teaching. For the next 12 years she worked as an office assistant and receptionist for a dentist, Dr. Peter Kakis. Her ability to organize and attention to detail made her a valuable asset. She loved going to work every day and meeting the patients, and Dr. Kakis felt blessed to have such a talented and dedicated assistant on whom he could depend.

Over her many years in Columbus, Sister Sharon made countless friends. She enjoyed going to gatherings of Sisters and Associates, to family parties, and to weekly card games with long-time friends. Recently she joined her high school classmates for their 70th reunion. She liked going out to eat for both special occasions and just for fun. When she celebrated her 88th birthday on September 19th, Sister Mary Berendt, with whom she had lived for more than 30 years, called her to plan a dinner celebration at Sister Sharon’s favorite Mexican restaurant. Two days later, Sister Sharon enjoyed a special birthday dinner with her sister, Virginia, her brother, Paul, and her sister-in-law, Jan. That would be the last time that the four would be together, for on Wednesday, September 24, Sharon unexpectedly went to eternal life.

While family members, Sisters, Associates and friends struggled to deal with the shock of her sudden departure from this life, Sister Sharon was undoubtedly enjoying a reunion with family and friends beyond description. We give thanks to God for the gift of our Sister Sharon.
