EAST OF THE HUDSON RIVER

Experience 360˚ of Discovery!

Nicknamed “Queen City,” Poughkeepsie became New York’s second state capital during the Revolutionary War. Alexander Hamilton and John Jay debated anti-federalists on the ratification of the US Constitution here, leading to the creation of the Bill of Rights. Matthew Vassar’s brewery became the first to achieve nationwide beer distribution. To do: Enjoy the bustling restaurants and shops around Market and Main Street. View WPA art at the historic Post Office. Take in a show at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House.

WEST OF THE HUDSON RIVER

Poughkeepsie Waterfront An economic engine

Highland Hamlet

Long before trains and automobiles, the Hudson River was a super-highway for Native American traders, and European settlers. It was established as a center for commerce by Dutch and British merchants a century before the Declaration of Independence. Two of the earliest houses built at Upper Landing still stand today. To do: Stroll from the train station and enjoy a meal at one of the nearby waterfront restaurants. Walk north through Waryas Park past the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum over the Fallkill Creek to Upper Landing Park. Weather permitting, ride the glass elevator 210 feet to the Walkway.

Classic, small town America Early settlers established this quaint hamlet surrounded by farmland with not-so-distant views of the Hudson. To do: Enjoy Highland’s architecture, boutique shops and restaurants amid the beauty and tranquility of the Hudson Valley.

Highland Landing

Riverfront reinvented by the past, present and future During the Revolutionary War, British warships targeted colonialists in Highland Landing, on their way up the Hudson to reinforce General Burgoyne in the Battles of Saratoga. To do: Stroll by the Yelverton House, the oldest wooden structure in Ulster County, and Bob Shepard Highland Landing Park with its boat launch and deep-water dock. View British cannon balls at Highland’s Town Hall.

Southside Historic District

Sentinels to Poughkeepsie’s Gilded Age Southside is part of four National Historic Districts all of which reflect the aspirations of the inventors, industrialists and civic leaders who called Poughkeepsie home over a century ago. These elegant, tree-lined residential streets showcase 19th-century neighborhood planning. To do: Walk Garfield Place and the nearby streets to take in the architecture of its historic landmark homes, many of which have been restored. Nearby Christ Church, completed in 1888, stands at the base of Academy Street.

NEW! Walkway Loop Trail

Enjoy Hudson River views from two bridges Crossing Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park and the Mid-Hudson Bridge, this 4.4 mile loop offers thrilling river views and connects parks, cultural attractions and historic points of interest on the Poughkeepsie and Highland waterfronts. To do: Walk the Loop trail and its additional spurs for easy access to nature trails in Franny Reese State Park, neighborhood walks and miles of rail trails in Ulster and Dutchess counties. Please note that the Mid-Hudson Bridge is open to pedestrians, weather permitting, from dawn to dusk.

Little Italy

The heart of the old world at the foot of the Walkway Poughkeepsie’s Little Italy grew thanks to vibrant immigrant enclaves. Its first residents were Irish, followed by German, Eastern European and Italian settlers. To do: Enjoy the ethnic restaurants in this area adjacent to the train station and beneath the Walkway.

Franny Reese State Park A wild woodland preserved

Union Street Historic Neighborhood

Thanks to the visionary activism of Scenic Hudson and dedicated advocates, this beautiful and historic tract of Hudson Valley woodlands was purchased in 2003 and named after Franny Reese, founding member and guiding spirit. To do: Enjoy this stunning 250-acre state park with scenic overlooks and 2.5 miles of trails.

Community-driven urban renewal

Poughkeepsie’s oldest neighborhood connected the early hilltop settlement to the Union Store on the riverbank. Houses along this road formed the backbone of this 19th-century immigrant neighborhood. In 1971 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to residents of Union Street who fought for its preservation. To do: Walk the tree-lined streets to see historic facades and an eclectic mix of artistic, business and residential uses that reveal the dynamic potential of conservation.

Illinois Mountain/Berean Park

A recreation zone for all levels of adventure Homesteaders in the 1800s migrating from New England to the Northwestern Territory named Illinois Mountain after their intended destination. To do: Enjoy recreational fishing, picnicking, lake swimming and gentle hiking paths at Berean Park, with more strenuous trails toward the peak. Seasonal activities include mountain biking and snowshoeing.
