Just for Fun You know you’re from a small town if...

• You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On Monday you could always tell who was at the party because of the scratches on their legs from running through the woods when the party was busted.

• You said the “F” word and your parents knew within the hour • You scheduled parties around the schedules of different police officers, because you knew which ones would bust you and which ones wouldn’t.

• You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough, they’d tell your parents anyhow).

• It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.

• The whole school went to the same party after graduation.

• You couldn’t help but date a friend’s ex-boyfriend/girlfriend • Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a dark vehicle for this reason.

• Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station, the Legion or the town bar.

• Directions were given using THE stop light as a reference.

• It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower.

Please mark the outside of the donation bag with a big “R” so we can put it directly into our recycling van. Marking it with an “R” is very helpful because we don’t have to sort the items. Samantha Nason BS Ranch & Greenhouses Well its Sunday evening mid April and the day was mostly cold with episodes of hail. More like mid March weather, although I don’t think anyone east of Calgary would have much sympathy. The evenings are colder than I would like and things are growing much

slower than I would like. I have moved my hanging baskets into my cold room in the barn and have added a bit of heat and 16 hours of sunlight. They are much happier. I watch several weather channels and am sorry to say we have persistently cold nights right into mid May ( 1 to 3 degrees). Then finally it changes to a warmer 6 to 10 degrees with a fair amount of rain, although weekends look promising. If you are starting your plants indoors now it the time to start your squash, cucumber, watermelon and cantaloup. Yard cleanup should be well underway by now at least we can get that done and feel we’ve made some headway.

Now lets take a look at that lawn. One of the worse things you can do is get out there and rake it, this removes the vital humus that has built up from last years growth and clippings . So put the rake away. Yeah!!!!

Now is the time to give that lawn a good fertilizing.

Most important is Nitrogen, the first numbers in your fertilizers N-P-K ratio. The next numbers are the Phosphorus, vital for good root development. The last is Potash which is also quite important in your

Dandelion, Purslane and Stinging Nettle

By Donna Easto It’s time to welcome to the backyard three of my favourite herbs for culinary use – Dandelions, Purslane and Stinging Nettle.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is rich in vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, iron, calcium and potassium, and is cultivated as a herb in China, France and Germany. Young leaves are picked in the spring for tonic salads. In early summer, before the plant flowers, leaves are harvested for the manufacture of medicinal teas and tinctures.

For culinary use, the young leaves can be steamed as greens, and used in salads. They’re best when collected before the flowers appear, and some of the most tender leaves are found growing in shady areas.

The roots can be sliced, cooked and served as a vegetable and make an interesting addition to stews. A caffeine-free drink can be made by slowly roasting the roots until dark brown inside and grinding them into the constituency of coffee.

Purslane is known as a pesky and prolific weed in gardens.

Rather than fight it this year take

advantage of its somewhat sour taste by using the young leaves and shoots in salads. It’s excellent when used in soups as a thickener. Local tribes dried Purslane in the sun, adding it to soup over the winter.

It’s rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron. I love blueberries and this smoothie made with Purslane is a winner: 2 cups of frozen blueberries (or berry of choice) 1/2 cup of hemp seeds 1 cup of purslane shoots and leaves 1 cup of fresh mint leaves 1 organic banana 2 cups of filtered water (or more depending on desired consistency) juice of 1/2 lemon Combine in blender and blend at high speed for about 1 minute. If you are using a high speed blender like the Vitamix, it should only take about 45 seconds to 1 minute.

Nettle, I can understand some folks’ reluctance to harvest and use nettles, but if you don’t you’ll miss out on one of nature’s most powerful herbal gifts to health and healing. If you do happen to run afoul of its stinging nee-

dles, you’ll find the relief from the plant itself by using nettle, dock or mullein as a strong tea wash to the affected area. Gather the young leaves before the plant flowers and steam as a veg-

etab l e or add to spring soups. I usually blanch the leaves before use just in case they’ve started to get a bit prickly. The dried leaf can be used to make a tea that closely resembles black tea in taste, but has no caffeine and packs a goodly amount of calcium and magnesium. The dried leaf can be blended into cookie, bread or biscuit batter for added nutrients.

Boop Boop A Doop

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the Ford Mus- A long time ago back in the late 1920’s Ester Jones tang, in the article I mentioned Betty Boop, so now I a young black woman (born in the early 1900’s) from thought I would give you a little history of how Bet- Harlem was singing at the Cotton Club in New York ty Boop became a star.

City, she sang in a child like voice which gave her the name of “Baby Ester” The people loved to watch Ester sing, she was a hot commodity in her day. One night in 1928 a white female singer went to see Baby Ester, singing her famous I Wanna Be Loved By You she liked her show so much that she decided to copy Baby Ester’s act and claim it for her own. This women’s name was Helen Clare Schroeder she was known by her stage name as Helen Kane. This court case was deemed hilarious even though it went to the Supreme Court, Fleischer Studios found a screen test of Ester proving that Helen had copied Ester’s singing style, words, and song. (the screen test has been lost since then) Helen lost the case, fading from her popularity.

She died in 1966, the only thing that the New York Times wrote about her was that she was a giggly, wiggly woman with brunette hair, and how she lost all her money in a clothing company that failed.

As for Baby Ester Jones she is a big part of Black History Month which is every year from February 1February 29.

Local RCMP Officer Honoured For His Work Within The Community The IODE RCMP Community Service Award was established over 27 years ago to recognize an RCMP member, unit or detachment of the RCMP for exemplary public service to their community outside of their official duties.

The provincial chapter of the IODE awarded this year’s recipient, Cst. Gary McLaughlin, for his outstanding work during a reception held, Saturday April 13th, 2019.

Cst. McLaughlin has dedicated numerous hours volunteering his own time to programs such as; Read with the RCMP, Emergency Services Fights Back Against Hunger, the Lumby Fire Truck restoration project and the Jean Minguy Memorial Youth Academy.

“It is apparent that Cst. McLaughlin is truly dedicated to the communities of the North Okanagan

area, given the countless volunteer hours he contributes each year outside of his regular duties,” says Cst. Kelly Brett. “The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is fortunate to have a Member such as Cst. McLaughlin serving in our area as he strives to be a constant role model to the youth of our community”.

Earlier this year, Cst. McLaughlin was also awarded Volunteer of the Year by Silverstar Rotary for his outstanding work within the community, which was presented to him during the Winter Carnival winter break-out luncheon.

When Cst. McLaughlin is not volunteering within the community and or dedicating time to his family, you will find him working the frontline within the North Okanagan Traffic Services Unit.

Legislation To Guide Move To Electric Vehicles, Reduce Pollution

New legislation will help reduce climate pollution by phasing out gas-powered light-duty vehicles and making zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) more available and affordable for British Columbians.

If passed, the zero emission vehicles act will require the sale of all new light-duty cars and trucks be zero-emission vehicles by 2040.

“British Columbians are eager to make the switch to zero-emission vehicles, but price and availability can be barriers,” said Michelle Mungall, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. “To reduce those barriers, we are providing rebates as part of CleanBC, and now we are bringing in legislation that will improve availability.”

The legislation will require all new light-duty vehicles to be zero-emission vehicles by 2040. This target will be met using a phased-in approach, with 10% of new light-duty vehicle sales by 2025, 30% by 2030 and 100% by 2040. The annual automaker requirements will start for the model year of 2020.

“We know that British Columbians want clean-energy vehicles to be more affordable and more accessible. The legislation will make it easier for everyone in our province to choose a clean-energy vehicle as their next purchase, supporting our long-term work to build a cleaner future, while dramatically reducing transportation and maintenance costs for British Columbians,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “The legis-

Robert George (Bob)

Jan. 28, 1938 - Apr. 10, 2019

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Robert George (Bob) Cook, who on April 10, 2019, moved on peacefully to his next series of adventures, at the age of 81.

Bob was born in Edmonton, AB on January 28, 1938, and was later chosen by Ted and Irene Cook to be their son. His early life was spent working on his family’s farm in northern Alberta (Hythe) with his sister, Beryl (Hotte), who survives him.

Bob left home young, eagerly seeking adventure and new ways to contribute to the world. He first got by working as a farm hand, a labourer, and then a deck hand on a paddle wheeler in the Yukon. He willingly assumed any work and did it well, taking up roles anywhere from seafarer to bartender, and worked his way up to managing multiple hotels in Northern BC. Bob ultimately found his calling through protecting workers’ rights, lobbying for fair pay and better working conditions, advocating for job security, and improving safety and labour circumstances for workers. Bob’s brilliant and legally oriented mind, sharp tongue, clever nature, and quick wit supported him well for success as an organizer, fierce negotiator, and business agent for the Hotel, Restaurant, Culinary Employee & Bartenders’ Union, Local 40, where he was a tireless advocate for workers until his well-earned retirement. Bob then dedicated his time to finding fish, feeding birds, raising roses, and nurturing his family at his beloved sanctuary on the quiet shores of Mabel Lake.

Bob is lovingly remembered, forever cherished, and survived by his wife, Margaret Blair-Cook, his daughters, Tracey (Robert) Oltmanns, Christian (Chris) Cook-Ross and his sons, Shayne (Brigette) Cook, and Rob (Raelene) Cook. His legacy is furthered by his stepsons, Landon (Jodi), Jeff (Cheryl) and Jeremy (Shannon) Knight, and his grandchildren who he treasured: Benjamin, Taylor (Jordan), Emma, Natalie, Lilly and Fynn.

A celebration of Bob’s incredible life will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Mabel Lake Community Hall located at 111 Shuswap Falls Road, Lumby, BC. Bob’s family thanks the dedicated staff and medical professionals at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and the North Okanagan Hospice Society for their kindness and compassion.

How to Have a Great Lawn for Your Easter Egg Hunt

Spring has arrived and Easter morning will be here before we know it. Families nationwide will be in their yards and seeking perfect Easter photo opportunity. Get your lawn in shape with a few tips from the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), is an international trade association representing power equipment, small engine, utility vehicle, golf car and personal transport vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.

“You want to spruce up your lawn before the kids are out there hunting for eggs,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of OPEI. “If you tidy up the lawn the time to fix bare patches in the lawn by re-seeding before Easter morning, they’ll have a great time and or re-sodding. Consider your child’s age when selecting hiding locations for the eggs. Young children will run around the lawn and find eggs. Older children might need more complexity such as hiding eggs in shrubbery.
