RDNO AWARDED EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS GRANTS

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has been awarded two grants through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for evacuation route planning at Kingfisher/Mabel Lake and for Emergency Operations Centre training.

The RDNO received $25,000 to go towards evacuation route planning for the Kingfisher and Mabel Lake area in the Electoral Area F. The amount received is the maximum that could be awarded under the program.

The funding will be put towards the creation of an Evacuation Route Plan. The Plan will be created by

firstly conducting a review and analysis of the current evacuation challenges based on demographics, geographic location, and local geology. After the review, the Plan will identify such things as alternative means of evacuation transportation including ground, water, or air. The RDNO will work in collaboration with ESS Coordinator and Emergency Program Coordinator to determine appropriate muster points, neighbourhood liaisons, group lodging options, transportation capabilities and resource requirements for evacuation.

“The Kingfisher and Mabel Lake area can be prone

to a number of natural hazards, such as wildfires, so the RDNO felt it was imperative to develop a comprehensive Evacuation Route Plan to ensure that residents will be able to leave the area safely in the event of an emergency,” said Alastair Crick, Manager of Emergency Services, RDNO. Also awarded was $7,000 to go towards Emergency Operations Centre training for RDNO staff.

The RDNO thanks the Province of British Columbia for the grant funding, and UBCM for administering the grant programs which will help make our communities safer in the event of an emergency.

Sand and Sand Bags Available for Flood Prevention

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is encouraging residents to take precautionary measures for flood prevention and property protection.

Flooding is a common, naturally occurring event in British Columbia. North Okanagan property owners are responsible for any measures required for flood protection on private property. General flooding can occur when water levels in lakes, creeks, or rivers rise as a result of heavy snow melt, run-off or rain in the spring and early summer seasons.

ness”, explained Alastair Crick, Manager of Protective Services with the RDNO. “In an effort to be proactive, we highly encourage residents to educate themselves and consider whether they should begin flood prevention actions such as sandbagging.”

Sand and sand bags are available at the following locations for residents who require them to protect their property from high water swelling. All aspects of the sandbagging process are the responsibility of the homeowner, and these materials have been provided strictly for flood protection purposes.

RECYCLING...thank you to everyone in our community that brings bags of recycling marked with an “R” for us to recycle. Did you know that we want your clothing that is ripped, stained, and no longer wearable, sheets, blankets, old shoes, boots, purses, and belts that we can send for recycling??? We get paid 15 cents per pound for our recycling and all this money goes toward supporting our local food bank, the breakfast programs in our schools, and to other worthwhile organizations in our community. We all benefit when we recycle and subsequently reduce what we put in the landfill!!!

A Good Gardener Always Plants 3 Seeds… One For The Bugs, One For The Weather And One For Himself.

Samantha Nason BS Ranch & Greenhouses In all my articles regarding garden preparation I always suggest the addition of a good compost. But what actually is involved in building a good composite that is suitable and sustainable in a back yard setting? Some of the ingredients that you normally throw away or hopefully recycle are all usable. The list includes things like nutshells, cardboard ice cream containers, tea bags, coffee grounds, hair from your hair brush or hair cuts, newspapers and the flyers that come with them to mention a few. Junk mail and old news papers and flyers can be shredded and put around your plants as mulch. Make the layer about 6 inches deep then sprinkle some soil on it and wet it down. It will suppress weeds, conserves moisture and rots down in no time to enrich the soil. The weeds

and other garden refuse can be placed in a paper bag, when the bag is full dig a hole that is large enough to contain it and bury it. This will create a healthy compost to enrich that area. Think of placing it between shrubs or other perennials. You can make a compost box out of a cardboard box. Just lower the box into a hole so it is down about 2 inches, keep adding yard refuse to it and wet it occasionally. You can use the compost as needed then tear up and bury the box when no longer wanted. Use loose tea or tea bags around your plants, it will decompose quickly and add nitrogen to you soil. Coffee grounds, eggshells and fruit peels, lettuce that has passed its prime and inedible fruits like apples and grapes are all good for the garden adding calcium, nitrogen and potassium to the soil. Wood ash is great to add to your compost however you should note your soils pH as it is not

the best for soils with and already low ph. Also it is not the best thing to use when planting potatoes as it causes potato scab.

There are a few things that you should not add to your compost pile and they include meat or animal fat as this will attract rodents and other pests. Salt can cause a plants cells to burst so ensure that no salt gets into the mix. Used cat litter or any animal droppings, these contain pathogens which you do not want mixed in. Cow, horse and chicken manure are good additions but be sure that they are well rotted and mixed in well as they can burn your plants. Black walnut leaves, bark or chips should not be used as they contain an element that inhibits the growth of many plants.

So even a small area of the yard can be made into a compost without the loss of looks or any unpleasant oder.

Cooking With Herbs And Spices - Elderflowers

By: Donna Easto Elderflowers are among my favourite herbs, and I think that they make one of the most delicious drinks ever created. You can purchase dried elderflowers, but if you’re lucky enough to be near unsprayed elders sometime around late May to mid-June, you can easily gather bunches of sweet smelling flat-topped clusters of creamy white flowers for use in this recipe. Bees and other insects flock to these trees, so please remember to share the bounty.

I’m sure there are lots of recipes out there for elderflowers, but this one, which came from England with my great-grandmother is a family favourite. I’m giving it to you “straight” but to be honest, you may want to cut back on the amount of sugar. Apparently great grandmother Fanny had quite a sweet tooth!

Elderflower Sparkler: • 3 ½ cups superfine sugar • 2 cups hot water • 4 large fresh elderflower heads (or about 50g dried) • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • Juice and pared rind of 1 organic lemon • 8 ½ pints (about 17 cups) of pure water, heated to almost boiling • 1. Mix the sugar with the hot water. Pour the mixture into a large glass container. Add the remaining ingredients. Stir well, cover leave for about 5 days.

• The next recipe is from my sister-in-law, who loves to make jams and jellies from wild ingredients: Elderflower Jam/Jelly: • 12 elderflower heads • 1½ litres cold water • Juice of 1 organic lemon • 1.5kg (about 6 cups) sugar 1. Place the elderflowers in a large saucepan and pour over the water.

Cover and let stand for 3 days.

2. Pour the liquid through a fine sieve into a large pot; add lemon juice and sugar.

Boil for 5 minutes. You may need to use pectin.

3. Spoon the finished jam/jelly into sterilized jars.

Close lids tightly and allow to cool.

Important Changes to Small Claims Court affecting Motor Vehicle Accident Claims

Changes to the way many disputes arising from motor vehicle accidents are resolved by BC courts take effect April 1, 2019.

The BC Supreme Court still deals with vehicle accident claims larger than $50,000, but many claims for up to $50,000 related to injuries caused by vehicle accidents must now be taken to the online Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT).

The Provincial Court of BC continues to deal with civil law disputes involving vehicle accidents in certain circumstances. This article outlines what Provincial Court may still deal with under the new laws.

Historical Lumby Contest The Lumby Grassroots historical book, circa 1892, mentions that a room at the newly built Morand Hotel was set aside weekly for Doctors visits. The first Doctors visiting here were Dr. Beckingsdale and Dr. Reinhard. Dr. Nash was the first resident Doctor and he had an office in the Morand Hotel.

To date there have been over 20 Doctors identified who have practiced in Lumby, excluding the ones above. How many can you name?

Eckert June 27, 1938 - April 3, 2019

It is with great sadness that the daughters of Arlene Eckert announce her passing at age 80. She left this world peacefully in the presence of her loving family. Mom always had a cheery, upbeat attitude and infectious laugh, but she lost her spark after losing her husband of 61 years, Ben, who predeceased her in August 2018. She leaves behind daughters Jody and her husband Randy, Jill and her husband Stan, and Jay and her husband Russell; grandsons Jason and Jake; granddaughters Emily and Randee and her husband Lee; great grandson Carey; great granddaughters Madison and Kinsley; brother Robert and his wife Pat and their children and grandchildren; and a large extended family.

Mom was born in Vernon and lived her entire life in the Okanagan. She spent the majority of her life in Lumby and lived on Whitevale Road for more than 50 years. She was very proud of the time she spent working as a teller at the Scotia Bank in Lumby, where she formed many friendships.

Mom was an adventurous soul who took up riding a motorbike in her 40s and continued riding into her 70s. One of her fondest memories was riding her motorbike in the North Okanagan Santa Toy Run. She also loved the tandem hang glide flight she took to celebrate her 65th birthday. Mom was incredibly talented in many ways and an accomplished seamstress and quilter. She had a thirst for knowledge and was always cutting out interesting articles she read in a newspaper. She greeted visitors to her home with a huge smile and “I’ll put on the kettle for tea.” Although Mom battled Alzheimer’s disease in her final years, she was still able to share a laugh over a cup of tea or while watching a funny TV show.

The family thanks the staff at the Hamlets in Vernon for their loving care of Mom and for their deep compassion during her final days. We also thank Charlene from We Care who was always there for Mom with a friendly face, a helpful attitude, and a gentle touch. We would like to make a special call out to Mom’s sister-in-law Pat, whose kindness, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand were limitless.

We will hold a joint Celebration of Life for Mom and Dad in Lumby, BC, in the coming months. Details will be announced at a later date.
