Just for Fun Small Town Humour ••An old mountaineer and his young wife were getting a divorce in the local court. But custody of the children was a problem.

The mother jumped to her feet and protested to the judge that since she had brought the children into this world, she should retain custody of them.

The old mountaineer also wanted custody of the children. The judge asked for his side of the story and, after a long moment of silence, the mountaineer slowly rose from his chair and replied, “Judge, when I put a dollar in a candy machine and a candy bar comes out, does it belong to me or the machine?

••Although the streets in our rural area have names and house numbers, most folks give more picturesque directions to their homes.

My friend’s instructions read: “Turn off the highway at the house with the white picket fence, go down this road until you come to the house with the big elm tree on the front lawn, then turn right and look for the house with the green roof and a camper in the drive-way.”

Apparently no one realized the white picket fence had long since been painted brown; the elm tree had been chopped down; the camper had been moved; and in the dusk, one roof looked like any other.

Hopelessly lost on the series of roads running through orchards, I decided to ask directions at the nearest house. The door was opened by my friend, who exclaimed, “I knew you wouldn’t have any trouble finding us!”

A.L.R. Land Use Dear Editor: I own 68 acres of prime farm land beside the Elementary School all of which is in the “A.L.R”.

For the last 23 years we have tried to get a piece of land out beside the daycare, about the size of a town lot. It has never been farmed as it is too small for the machinery to turn around.

The idea was that when I retired, I would put a mobile on it so I could stay in Lumby and have easy access to town. The R.D.N.O. answer has always been “no”.

I inquired several months ago again and the answer was “Heaven forbid that is in the A.L.R. If you pay us $1,500.00 we will forward your request to a committee and the answer will be “no”.

So I am curious to know what the owner of the property on Shafer Road had to do to get their permission to be able to pave over 26 acres of good farm land in the A.L.R. Did he have to pay? Do we have a special rule for the “powerful” and “rich”?

Shafer Road To the Editor, The front door of my house is located 60 metres from Green Ambers proposed 107 000 sq ft cannabis production facility. My bedroom will be closer to the flowering rooms in building C than the security office will be. I will have to sleep near 14 large HVAC units, 1 for each flowering room and 16 smaller units used for the vegetation and drying rooms. My dining room window will face these buildings and all the lights from 20 plus building exits surrounding the facility and all of that encompassed by security fence. It has been said that this is just a case of NIMBYism, but not everything belongs in neighborhood backyards.

Does anybody want a 107 000 sq ft industrial building the size of Walmart, 60 metres from your front door?

This facility has to be built on concrete; so he is not here for the soil. The product is grown in windowless metal buildings; so he is not here for the sunshine.

The buildings are supplied by a closed loop ventilation system, so he is not here for the clean air. He is here for the water and even that will be filtered, treated, nutrients and kept at a constant temperature. This facility does not have to be on ALR, it should not be on

ALR. It belongs in an industrial zone.

Mr. Fernandes the president of Green Amber has stated that cannabis is an agricultural crop; however he has to apply for non-farm use status in order to proceed. I would argue that an agricultural crop that needs a non farm use status it is only agricultural in terminology and not practice. Furthermore his building permit application form clearly states Industrial not Agricultural. Once again this facility belongs in an industrial zone not in ALR surrounded family homes.

I believe that if this proposed facility is allowed at 95 Shafer Road, precedence will be set. More corporate owned, industrial sized facilities will be built in your back yards. The RDNO has the ability to not forward this application, it will go to a vote whether to forward it to ALC or not. A vote to forward the submission is akin to approval by RDNO by virtue that not submitting is disapproval. The ALC will then have the final decision on ALR land. Please, if you have concerns or questions contact your Regional Director and cc all Board of Directors.

On Feb 14 four of Lumbys councilors and staff visited the Monashee Mews as part of the national #becauseyoucare campaign. The Canadian Association for Long Term Care, CALTC, created the campaign to bring awareness to what they are calling a crisis in long term care facilities. They asked that MLA’s and local government show their support by visiting a long term care facility.

On Sunday February 17th Lumby resident, Geoff Akins-Hannah presented his Bubble Wonders show during the FEED HOPE tour in celebration of Family Day weekend. A grant from the B.C. Government allowed attendees to come for free.

Families were encouraged to bring donations for the Lumby Food Bank. Over 150 men, women, and children came out to support the food bank.

At the time this went to press over $150 in cash donations and a lots of food items were collected with more to follow on Monday.

Colleen’s Corner

By Colleen Fielding Welcome to Colleen’s Corner. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Okay, who’s dreaming of warm weather, the lake, boating, and having fun without travelling to another country? Oh wait, that must be me LOL! Yup this is our little 12 foot boat, and yes that is an umbrella on it, it helps to keep us cool when out on the lake and it’s a very hot day and it also helps us to not get sunburned or sunstroke.

It was pretty smokey that day, but we didn’t care we went to the Sugar Lake Fishing Derby in September put on by the Lumby Legion. It is always a good time there, if you have never been you might want to check out this year. Nope we didn’t catch any fish, other people did, but oh well next time. Even though we didn’t catch any fish, we still enjoyed the great steak and pot luck dinner that was put on after the fishing derby was over.

So here are my thoughts for this winter, please hurry and get this over with.

First our pellet stove decided have issues during the cold snap on a weekend, so we had to wait until the Monday and thanks to Travis at SunFire he got

Dreaming Of the Warmth it all working for us within a couple of hours. Then a few days later a pipe burst under the trailer, thanks to Mike a very good plumber for his speedy help and we got that fixed. Oh yeah, we also have to replace our Gazebo again this year.

So is it any wonder why I can’t wait for this winter to be over so that I can enjoy the boat, and other fun things. My gardens will need to be tended to as well, I can’t wait to see all the flowers coming up and sometimes there are little surprises as well, as once in awhile I have flowers growing that I didn’t plant, but they could have been a seed dropping from a bird or the wind. I call these plants my little volunteers LOL. Also in the nice weather we take road trips, and visit friends that live a couple hours away we love those days and my camera gets to come out and play more so than in the winter (although I still take pictures in the winter just not as many when it’s too cold I don’t like to leave the house I want to stay in where it’s warm as long as we have heat and water inside LOL) After reading this I know you must think that summer is my favorite season, but I like May and September the best, May starts to bring in my beautiful flowers, and it’s not too hot, September is still beau-

tiful (plus my birthday is in September LOL) and not to hot. While I find July and August sometimes to be unbearable with the heat even being out on the lake during these months sometimes does not help. I have had heat and sun stroke a few times so it’s hard for me to be outside in the very very hot days.

But I still am dreaming of warmer weather, so I can go out and play more often and not feel like I have cabin fever from being cooped up all winter.

Hats off to warm weather, I miss you, come back to us soon!

Vernon Loses A Pioneer Kalamalka Caring Clown And Long-Time Resident Vernon became a little less colourful last month when long-serving Kalamalka Caring Clown (KCC), Bev McCulloch died on January 24, 2019.

Bev joined the Clowns when she was about to turn 70, among the first training classes for Vernon’s now iconic, therapeutic clowns. Bev’s “License for Laughter,” was signed by KCC Founder, Carole Fawcett (Flower).

Bev was born in Salmon Arm as Beverly E. Koski, and spent her school years in Lumby and much of her adult life in Vernon. She and her husband Malcolm McCulloch, have a 106 year old home on 39th Avenue where they have lived for most of the last five decades.

Bev—known in clowning circles as “Hapi”—was a fixture at Vernon’s many senior’s homes and Vernon Jubilee Hospital, and along with her clown

partners Rainbow, Ms. Mouse and others, visited and brought a ray of sunshine to the lives of the residents and patients. “Three years ago, Bev became a resident of the Polson residential care facility, and the Kalamalka clowns returned the caring gesture to visit Bev there regularly”, said her husband, Malcolm McCulloch.

A service honouring the long and beautiful life of Bev McCulloch (Hapi) will be held at 2PM on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home. “We are calling her service ‘The Last Show,’ said Bev’s daughter, Lori Winstanley, “there will balloons and a clown honouring, music and a special bag pipe tribute to our Pa, Malcolm, from one of his long ago piping students. All who knew her are welcome to attend what we hope will be a truly unique tribute for a colourful and loving woman”, concluded Winstanley.

Jessa Joles, School Based Outreach Counsellor For Whitevalley Community Resource Centre The month of February is all about wearing PINK. One specific day, February 28th, is Pink Shirt Day. Choose to wear a pink shirt to help take control back for anyone who has ever been bullied, witnessed bullying, or has even been a bully themselves. The rise in social media interest has deemed 2019 the year we are primarily focusing on cyber-bullying because it is so easy to remain anonymous. Specifically, cyberbullying could be using electronic media to humiliate, threaten, or ruin someones reputation. Verbal, physical, emotional, social, and cyber are all the types of bullying that we can make ourselves aware of. Bullying can result in serious emotional distress, including anxiety, low self-esteem, or depression; on top of possible physical injuries.

Pink Shirt day highlights the importance of mental health and genuinely caring about your peers and community.

It only took two young men who were seniors in high school to go buy some pink shirts to wear on behalf of a boy who was being bullied,for wearing a pink shirt. This magical day happened in 2007 in Nova Scotia and has been raising millions of dollars to go towards anti-bullying programs ever since. These programs are catering to young children and youth to help educate them on empathy, kindness, and honesty. It is hopeful that by learning and putting these skills to use, people will think twice and choose to be nice.

As a counsellor, I am passionate about victims of bullying knowing that they are not alone and there are resources and help available. Wearing a pink shirt does not necessarily raise money, but it shows others care and starts an important conversation about how we can treat others kindly regardless of their unique differences. For every comment you make, whether it is online or in person, remember to THINK before you speak up.

We can ask ourselves if what we want to say is True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind.

WWW is a small group of women who are beginning a social and support group for women one Wednesday a month beginning in March and ending in May. If you’re looking for work or considering re-entering the workplace this will be of particular interest to you. If you do not file your return, the GST and Child Tax Benefits (if applicable) may be interrupted/discontinued as well as other benefits you may have.
