STILL STANDING

Lumby had the privilege of being the subject of the CBC’s comedy/reality series “Still Standing” over the past week. Film crews were around town filming different segments and interviewing locals about our great town. On Friday, January 18th, the show’s host, Jonny Harris, along with his writers put on a very entertaining and funny show at the Whitevalley Community Centre.

Just for Fun Winter Driving

Norman and his wife live in Lumby. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, “We are going to have 8 to 10 centimeters of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through.”

Norman’s wife goes out and moves her car.

A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, “We are expecting 10 to 12 centimeters of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through.” Norman’s wife goes out and moves her car again.

The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says “We are expecting 12 to 14 centimeters of snow today. You must park...........” then the electric power goes out.

Norman’s wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, “Honey, I don’t know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the plow can get through?”

“Why don’t you just leave it in the garage this time?”

Vancouverites

Vancouverites are by tradition terrible drivers when snow falls. During one particularly heavy storm, a reporter asked a man if he thought Vancouver drivers knew how to handle their cars in snowy conditions. “Of course,” he replied, “We know how to drive in the snow, we just don’t know how to stop.”

Proposed Cannabis Facility 95 Shafer Road Lumby To the Editor, Why are Rick Fairbairn and the village of Lumby supporting a non-farm use application in rural Lumby that would allow a privately owned company from Ontario to build buildings with concrete floors totaling 107,000 sq feet, pave a 30 car parking lot and shipping/receiving bays on ALR land instead of directing them to Lumby’s Industrial Park?

How can this get supported when the buildings and proposed septic field would border a creek that feeds the Shuswap River 600 meters away?

How can something that would completely change the fabric of a neighborhood be supported without considering the impact on neighbors and without any public input?

This facility would be located on a dead end dirt road 12 kms outside of Lumby in a rural area of small acreages where families live and children play outside.

There are 13 children that live and play on Shafer road.

The property has been logged and there is no way you can hide the massive 107,000 sqft buildings that they plan to build. One neighbor’s front door is only 50meters away. Who wants to live beside large indus-

trial buildings surrounded by 10’ chain link fencing, exterior lighting, hvac systems and a 24/7 guard? This facility will not be as tall but will be larger in square footage than Veg Pro. The exterior lights from Veg Pro light up the whole highway when you drive by.

This is not the place for a facility of this size.

Green Amber how could you think that this is ok?

You are negatively impacting the lives of the people who have lived on this road for many years. We will all lose our quiet rural life that we love so much. We will all lose major value in our homes that we have worked so hard for. Green Amber please do the right thing and move your facility to the industrial park where it belongs.

Our ALR land should be protected, this land will never be farmable again if Green Amber builds their facility! When the cannabis gold rush ends and if Green Amber fails, who will clean up the mess they leave behind?

It is now in our regional’s hands if this application goes ahead to the ALC or not. Our regional directors do have the power to stop this. The ALC will not look at any non-farm use applications if local government does not support it.

Green Amber To the Editor, Why did we purchase acreage? Not to live next to an Industrial Grow Operation, that is what Green Amber proposes to develop on Schafer Road in Lumby.

We love our spot with farm animals, wild life and green grass - we are afraid our senior retirement years will be shattered with a 100,000 sq. ft. structure, 30 car parking lot and whatever else will follow that is necessary to run a business such as what they

are proposing.

Green Amber needs to develop their business plan in Lumby’s Industrial Park not on Schafer Road where horses, chickens, donkeys and goats enjoy country living - not to mention children, parents and grandparents.

PUBLIC NOTICE FortisBC Energy Inc. Application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the Inland Gas Upgrade Project On December 17 2018, FortisBC Energy Inc. (FEI) filed an Application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the Inland Gas Upgrade Project. FEI is requesting approval to implement integrity management upgrades and retrofits on 29 existing transmission pressure natural gas pipelines in the interior of British Columbia. FEI identified the Inland Gas Upgrade Project as part of its ongoing system integrity program and states it is needed to ensure continued safe and reliable service to its interior customers. The estimated total cost of the Inland Gas Upgrade Project is $363.895 million and the total delivery rate impact is estimated to be 4.31 percent over six years from 2020 to 2025.

Ready to Reminisce The staff at Lumby & District Chamber of Commerce is working on an exciting new project that aims to showcase what once was commerce in our area.

They are focusing on the history of business that has served our village over the years. They believe that by sharing our stories, it shapes our history. The Chamber staff is busy developing a platform where stories can be told and historical data can be gathered.

Eventually this research will lead to a hard copy publication that can be enjoyed and passed on for years to come.

If you have treasured memories of business in days gone by in Lumby, now is the time to come forward and share. Many of today’s residents don’t know that there used to be a bowling alley in town, that Deul-

ings Law office was once a booming corner gas station, the old Family Café building made the most incredible pies or Frontier Video used to be the place to get a Beta movie and snacks on a Friday night. The list goes on and on and the history should be kept alive!

Student Ranger Program Accepting Applications For 2019 Season Young adults interested in learning a diverse range of job skills while working outdoors this summer can now apply for the BC Parks Student Ranger Program.

Now in its second year, the Student Ranger Program provides 48 young adults training and employment opportunities in B.C.’s parks and protected areas, with a 30% Indigenous hiring target.

“The student rangers play a key role in environmental stewardship while preserving the natural, cultural and historical values that British Columbians cherish,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “I hope the program inspires young adults to consider a meaningful and rewarding career looking after B.C.’s beautiful parks and protected areas.”

Funded by the federal and provincial governments, the Student Ranger Program offers hands-on work experience related to conservation, recreation, community outreach and Indigenous relations. Their work focuses on a variety of meaningful projects, such as ecosystem restoration, invasive species con-

trol, trail building and maintenance, and outdoor education.

For the 2019 season, 12 crews of four student rangers will work in regions throughout the province, including Prince George, Fort St. John, Terrace, Bella Coola, Williams Lake, Manning Park, Cranbrook, Kamloops, Victoria (Goldstream Provincial Park), Black Creek (Miracle Beach Provincial Park), North Vancouver (Mount Seymour Provincial Park) and Sechelt (Porpoise Bay Provincial Park). Crew lead positions begin May 13 and crew members begin May 26, wrapping up at the end of August.

Offered to young adults aged 18 to 30, eligible candidates must be enrolled in full-time studies in the past academic year with the intention of returning to full-time studies in the fall. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 24.

The Student Ranger Program was the first program established with proceeds from the sales of BC Parks specialty licence plates. So far, nearly 130,000 licence plates have been sold, generating $4.14 million towards protecting and preserving provincial parks.

I should mention that a number of students from Charles Bloom Secondary are participating in a work experience program in our store by collecting and sorting empty clothes hangers, sweeping the floors, re-folding clothing and emptying the donation bins. What a great working partnership this has become for everyone involved!

If you see them working in the store, please take the time to compliment these students on the wonderful job they are doing! It’s so nice to see young people of this age become involved in a store that benefits the entire community! They get the opportunity to see the value of volunteer work in ev-

ery sense, and it’s quite possible they will continue to volunteer later on in their lives.

Last week it was our pleasure to assist a family from Cherryville that lost their home to a fire. We were able to help with replacing clothing and other necessary items. Cora, one of our volunteers, showed the family around the store encouraging them to select anything they needed. The Grandmother of the family was given a collection of angel figurines to replace a cherished group she lost in the fire. She was so touched that she was in tears and the rest of the volunteers and a number of customers had to fight back the tears as well, in witnessing how happy this small gift of angels made her.

I want to let you know that we have a big selection of vinyl records to choose from. There is everything from classical to pop music. It’s so much fun to listen to a record from days gone by!!

Last but not least, January 25th is the last Friday of the month…so you know what that means!!!!

As far as I can tell, there are no particular nutrients specific for this phase, aside from Glutathione, which is included in both Phases I and II. The Phase 1 detoxification process can produce superoxide radicals (a form of free radicals) and some are reactive oxygen intermediates (free radicals again) which are actually more toxic than the original substance. Free radical damage is involved in inflammation, which leads to heart disease, cancer, and aging. Nutrients that help protect the body from these reactive oxygen intermediates include Carotenes, vitamin A, vitamin C, Selenium, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Co-enzyme Q10, Thiols (compounds found in garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables). At the January 12th Toastmaster Officer Training in Kamloops Audrey Pope (2nd from right) was presented with her Distinguished Toastmaster medal. This is the highest award attainable in the Toastmasters organization and Audrey – who has been in Toastmasters for 25 years – worked long and hard to achieve her DTM. Audrey is a charter member of the Monashee Toastmasters club in Lumby and also a member of the Monday Nite Vernon Toastmasters in Vernon. Bantam Lumby Stars wins Gold at the South Okanagan (Osoyoos/Oliver) Tournament.

by Great West Equipment were in Osoyoos this past weekend for a tournament. The Stars had their opening game vs. Kelowna and came out strong.

Kolby English had 2 goals for the night and got the Stars on the board. Tori Maltman, Zachary Young and Quintin O’Neill and provided 2 goals and 1 assist each. Ryder Quibell and Mia Maltman were the play makers of the game each with 3 assists and some very sweet passing. Jace Catt earned one assist. James Wraight had the shutout. Zachary Young received the MVP and Quintin O’Neill received the hard hat for hardest worker.

The Bantam Stars were up early Saturday morning for a tough battled game vs. Cloverdale. Cloverdale was the first to get on the board half way through the first period but O’Neill had a beauty pass from Riley Dewhirst to tie it up at the end of the first. O’Neill was unstoppable and scored 4 goals for the morning.

Quibell sniped one by their very strong goalie. Young and English both picked up a assist each. Wraight was in between the pipes with the Stars winning 5-2.

Quintin O’Neill received the MVP and Tori Maltman received the hard hat for hardest worker.

Afternoon game was against Langley and the Stars game out to play. Wraight had his second shutout of the weekend. Scorers for the Stars were Young with a hat trick, O’Neill 2+2, Quibell 1+3, Riley Dewhirst had a beauty from the point and 1 assist, Garrett Louis dangled around players and sniped one. Mia Maltman and Faith Seehaver each had 2 assists, Jace Catt and Tori Maltman both picked up an 1 assist. Kolby English had great hustle and back checking all game.

Stars won 8-0 Riley Dewhirst received the MVP and James Wraight received the hard hat for hardest worker. Off to the semis Sunday morning.

Sunday morning the Bantam Lumby Stars faced a very classy and skilled Grand Forks team. O’Neill got the Stars on the score board first with 45 seconds in the first period. Quibell had a sweet pass from Catt to tie it up 2-2 to end the first period. Grand Forks was 4-2 at ice clean but the Stars rallied back with Ryder Quibell getting a quick goal and then Tori Maltman having a breakaway that tied the game up at the end of the second to make it 4-4. Grand Forks came out strong with 2 quick goals in the third period.

The Berms Are Coming Down

There was a great turn-out for the public hearing in regards to the flood mitigation at the Whitevalley Community Centre on January 16.

Representatives were there from the Village of Lumby, Kerr Wood Leidal Consulting Engineers, the Ministry of Forests, lands, Natural Resource Operations, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada were in attendance to provide information and answer questions.

Work on removing the berms will be done in two phases, with the first stage beginning in February and the second phase to be begin as soon as the conditions permit it.

In phase one will see the removal of works above the two year high water mark (see diagram) which is anticipated to take approximately 7 weeks in duration. There will also be specific individual reviews that include the end of Faulkner, Kal Tire and Heighway Cres. There will also be site contouring and remediation.
