Just for Fun New Year’s Resolutions That Really Know Our Struggles

When a new year approaches, we tend to create fantasies about what the next year will bring: untold riches, six-pack abs, and so on.

But others may have a more realistic point of view: ••Forgot to make resolutions? Just write out everything you did on New Years Eve and at the beginning add the word “stop.”

••I’d love to say ‘New Year. New Me.’ but I’m only 2 stamps away from a free meal with my KFC loyalty card. Would be silly to ruin that now...

••Startup idea: a gym named Resolution that runs for the 1st month of the year, collects subscription fee, then converts to a bar named Regret ••My New Year’s resolution is simply to remember to write 2019 instead of 2018.

••My new year’s resolution is for someone else to pay my rent every month what do you mean that’s not how it works?

••My New Years Resolution is to not cling to my mistakes, even though I spent a lot of time making them.

It is 1 to 2 kms long with 7-8 homes on rural residential properties.

The structure will be on ALR land and over 100,000 sq ft with a 30 car parking lot and they want it on a concrete pad which is not allowed on ALR land. They have already begun hauling in fill which is also not allowed on ALR land. I live 5 miles further down the Highway on a 2 km long side road with 7 homes and I know I don’t want anything like this for a neighbour.

One of the properties on Schafer Road is for sale and their realtor told them they’ll have to drop their price by $100,000.00 Every owner of Rural property in the North Okanagan should be watching this closely because this is a gold rush and if this one goes through there will be more.

Mr Fernandez, one of the owners of Green Amber, was at the Regional District Meeting on December 12th to plead his case and said when he initially came to Lumby he was shown the Industrial Park where there is room and already has 1 industrial grow op. Obviously he looked around and found cheaper property with water and septic for the cost of installation and less scrutiny if they are hidden away. He also stated he would create 30 jobs – would there be any less jobs if he was in the Industrial Park? If locals grow hemp he said he would market for them for the production of CBD – I’m sure they can also do that from the Industrial Park.

We already have some small, licenced sites (under the 183 sq meter – 2000 sq ft) and most don’t seem to be bothering anybody. We are being incredibly cautious about where cannibus products can be retailed, so why aren’t we trying for minimal impact from the industrial grow ops/production facilities?

To the Editor, I would like to thank the community for such a great year! We were so fortunate to have Mac’s Convenience Store fund raise over $800 for us; we also had some great support with donations from M. Unterberger, L.E. Contracting Ltd., Lumby Seniors Meals to Wheels and Vernon Friends of the Library. We held some stellar programming due to the support. We held a slime party, a Leif David Magic Show, Canadian Astronomical Society presentation and a story telling workshop with Gabriel Newman. We were able to run

some great Summer Reading programs.

We received 2 grants this year, one from MAC which allowed us to hold a Zen Dot Art night and the other Canada Post Community Foundation Grant which was amazing to receive and allowed us to purchase the equipment required for our Linking Literacy program.

I would like to thank my assistant Charmayne and Page Meagan for all they do in the year. We wish the community a Merry Christmas and we look forward to serving you in the New Year.

The Village Gallery hosts QuArtz

Can a quilt make you shiver with delight or bring tears to your eyes? YES! The Village Gallery is pleased to host the Fabric of Water by QuArts (the Quilting Arts Group).

Water is the theme for this sub-group of the Vernon Silver Star Quilters but members had to use fabric collected from four countries. This is the format of the Quartz group: provide a challenge; set a topic and other constraints (size, technique etc.) then hold monthly seminars on specific quilting skills. Brigitte Red of Gallery Vertigo and a member of QuArtz, says of this show, “As a fibre artist I find the variety of technique and fibres used gives an insight into the many interpretations of this particular theme”. A year’s worth of work by each artist has brought out stunning concepts: water as a global issue; as the source of life; as a spiritual passion or a reminder of a favourite time of year. Studying each piece, one sees how the artists have played with unusual elements (sea shells for example) and a variety of materials.

Brigitte mentioned that QuArtz members often meet a topic with skepticism and doubt but that, during the year, they overcome the challenges and individual inspiration becomes the driving force. This process is nurtured by monthly workshops, demos and positive critiques.

Welcome to the new year of 2019. It is a time to reflect on the months gone by and project on the possibilities in the months ahead. Some of us look forward to a fresh chapter with exhilaration and anticipation and some of us wrestle with the idea of what’s in store. Well, here’s a fun fact for getting back into the January routine; Did you know that Wrestling Day is on January 2nd and is an official holiday?

Only if you happen to live in William’s Lake, B.C., that is. It just so happens to be a strange Canadian law and cause for celebration for many residents of this town.

Most bylaws are initially set in place to provide restrictions and boundaries but it is documented that many decades ago, two local William’s Lake merchants, Syd Western and Alistair Mackenize, were having coffee together on a bitterly cold January 2nd, sometime in the 1930s.

The streets were empty and all of the shopkeepers were in agreeance that business was definitely slow on the days after Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The story continues and the idea of a holiday called “Wrestling Day” was created because most of the town seemed to be wrestling with something; hangovers, exhaustion, winter doldrums, etc. and by 1943, the town of William’s Lake had declared January 2 a holiday.

It became a law in 1959 and officially known as Wrestling Day. In 1976, all existing by-laws involving store LEGAL closures were abolished, including NOTICE Notice of disposition Wrestling Day. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

You can find them on a lot of farms throughout the world. They go by a few different names: Donkey, Burro’s,( Burro is a common name for wild Donkey’s) and Asses (The name Ass is more correct according to the scientists.) Male Donkey are called Jacks, while females are called Jennets or Jennies.

Donkey’s are a very strong animal. They are great to carry things on their backs, many countries use them as a pack horse or a work horse, or sometimes for their milk.

They are also used for transportation, especially in hot climates the preferred animal to ride is a Donkey not a horse. Donkey’s are a herd animal, and like to be around other animals, if they can’t be with another Donkey, they

are great around, Sheep, Goats, and Horses. In the wild there is usually only one male surrounded by a bunch of females, although it is not unheard of to have more than one male in a pack as long as the other males know their place and are submissive to the dominant male.

They don’t really like canines that much as their natural predator is the Wolves, and Coyotes. Their natural defense is to stomp an animal to death if they feel it would be a threat to them. They are great protectors of other livestock.

The memory that a Donkey has is amazing, they can remember being in a place they had been in 25 years ago.

Unlike a Horse, the Donkey will not be as easily startled. The Donkey will also stop completely and refuse to move if it thinks it is entering an unsafe area. Although it is uncommon to see a Donkey run, they can, but as their ancestors came from hot climates like the Desert it is their instinct not to run.

Mules are different then Donkey’s. A Mule has been crossed with a male Donkey and a female Horse. A Hinny is a male Horse bred to a female Donkey, both of these animals are usually sterile.Typically people prefer to work with a Mule instead of a Hinny, as the Mule is stronger. Mules are usually larger than a Donkey, but tend to have a more delicate bone structure than the Donkey.

A well taken care of Donkey can live about 40 years or so.

The highest number of Donkeys living in one country is China. they have the most Donkeys in the entire world!

If you live in Britain and want to travel with your Donkey, you need to get him a passport! ( wow can you imagine taking your Donkey to the government office and having your Donkey get his picture taken for his passport LOL) They would be telling your Donkey not to smile and look at the red dot hahaha pretty funny.

Trees can be dropped off at the curling rink concrete pad opposite the Lumby Curling Club any time prior to January 15, 2019.

In 2017, Olivia was the top name, overall.

For six of the past seven years, Olivia has been the favourite name for girls born in British Columbia. So far in 2018, that name leads the list for girls, followed

by Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Chloe, Ava, Sophia, Isla, Emily and Hannah. Isla is new to the list this year.

After Liam, the top choices for boys born in B.C. in 2018, in order, are Lucas, Oliver, Benjamin, Ethan, Noah, Logan, William, James and Leo. A new addition to the top 10 in 2018 is Leo. In 2017, Benjamin was the number 1 boys’ name in B.C., followed by Liam, Logan, Lucas, a tie for fifth between Ethan and James, then Oliver, Noah, William and Owen.

Only names whose frequency occurs five or more times are listed.

There have been 40,565 babies born in B.C. in 2018 – 19,821 girls and 20,744 boys. In 2017, there were 44,694 babies born in B.C. – 21,727 girls and 22,967 boys.

Lower Income Families Benefiting From Fair Pharmacare Investment

For 240,000 British Columbian families, the new year brings the help they need with prescription drugs, thanks to a three-year $105-million investment that is reducing or eliminating deductibles and co-payments for lower-income households.

“No one should have to make the difficult decision between their family’s health and putting food on the table. We know that for many working households, needed prescriptions were going unfilled too often because Fair PharmaCare deductibles were too high.

The changes we have made will provide thousands of families with the relief they need,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health.

“These are the first ever changes to Fair PharmaCare deductibles and co-payments since the program was created 15 years ago – a long overdue step forward in improving the health and lives of thousands of British Columbians. For example, as of Jan. 1, households earning up to $30,000 in net income annually no longer have a deductible, meaning the Province will help pay for eligible prescription drug costs right away.”

Previously, a household earning a net annual income between $15,000 and $30,000 would have to pay between $300 and $600 in deductibles before Fair PharmaCare would start to provide coverage assistance.

Ministry of Health data has shown a link between low-income levels, deductibles and decreased drug spending, indicating that families will forgo filling prescriptions because of the cost, opting for other essentials, such as housing and groceries.

Families earning under $45,000 in net annual income are also benefiting from this investment. Deductibles and co-payments have been lowered for households earning between $30,000 and $45,000 net, annually. Fair PharmaCare co-payments have also been eliminated for seniors born before 1940 earning a household net annual income up to $14,000, and for the lowest income households – those earning up to $13,750.

Previously, anyone registered with Fair PharmaCare, even people with the lowest incomes, would have to pay out-of-pocket before receiving 100% coverage. For example, previous coverage levels stated that a family earning $11,250 net a year was required to spend $200 on prescriptions before PharmaCare would begin to pay for all eligible drug costs.

By eliminating the family maximum for the lowest-earning families and reducing it for those earning less than a net annual income of $45,000, families will save more on prescriptions throughout the year.

The Lumby & District Health Services Society (LDHSS) is a charitable organization formed by Lumby and area residents concerned about the lack of health services in the community. The Society received Incorporation under the BC Society’s Act in 1974.

The financial donations all contribute to facilitating health services in the Lumby area.

The Annual Walk Roll Run event is a financial supporter for the Health Center via the generous contributions from citizens and local businesses.

The Annual General Membership meeting is held each May. The annual membership fee is only $1.00.

The Society encourages citizens to join, as your involvement is needed to grow health services in the community. Members are welcome to volunteer for community events put on by the Society. Directors meetings are held monthly with the exception of July,

Lumby Bantam Stars Lumby Bantam Stars were in Winfield this past weekend for a tournament. Stars faced off on Friday against North Ok and won 6-1. Ryder Quibell was a fire cracker getting a hat trick and one assist. Jace Catt and Quintin O’Neill 1+1, Garrett Louis 1 goal.

Zachary Young had two assists while Tori Maltman one assist. MVP went to Ryder Quibell. James Wraight had the win between the pipes.

Stars were up early Saturday morning against the Kamloops Predators. Young opened up the scoring early in the second. O’Neill had the winner and the insurance goal. Quibell picked up an assist to have the Stars win 3-1. MVP went to Mia Maltman and Tori Maltman got the hard hat for the hardest worker. Wraight earned the win in net.

Morris got the goal with Maltman and Roine assisting. Lillooet scored twice 2 minutes apart late in the third but the Stars never gave up. It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Angeline “Angie” Myers. Born on April 18, 1936 in Bapaume, Saskatchewan and passed on December 15, 2018 at Coldstream Meadows, her home for the past couple of years.

Angie is predeceased by her parents Bruno and Evelyn Smith; husband Roy Myers and grandson Dylan Smart.

She is survived by her three children, Valerie Akerman (Bill); Brian Bengtson (Christine) and Randy Bengtson; six stepchildren Dianne Watson, Delma Wiedeman (Keith), Sally Adrian (Bill), Malcolm Myers (Pearl), Brenda Zemlak (Rollie), Colleen Smart (Gary); brothers Ron Smith, Bob Smith (Lynn) and Lorne Smith (Celine). Further survived by 16 grandkids and 17 great grand kids.

A Celebration of Angie’s Life will be held at a later date in the spring.

The family wishes to extend a special Thank-You to Dr. Harper for his compassionate care of mom over the last couple of years. The Best Detoxification System – Ever!

By Donna Easto We’ve all heard of different detox programs – and perhaps you’ve even tried one or two. But the best detoxification system is the one our bodies come equipped with at birth - a natural system that is much more complex than the detox diets we so often hear celebrities advertising. There’s a lot more to detoxification than simply fasting, eating strange foods, or drinking a special drink.

Natural detoxification is a perfectly designed process that happens in our bodies every single day. The process, which occurs in three distinct phases is normally quite capable of removing toxins from your body without any additional help. However, in today’s world, there’s a mismatch between what your body’s exposed to and what it’s able to clear. SOS! It’s time to come to the aid of your own natural detoxification system!

How? with a natural detoxification program that both supports its functioning and works to help you avoid putting toxins in your body in the first place.

Let’s have a quick look at this amazing system: The liver is your primary detoxification organ; it filters blood coming directly from the intestines and prepares toxins for elimination from the body. Although the bulk of the work is done by the liver and the intestinal tract the kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system and skin are all involved in this amazing system.

Farm Workers Who Hand-Harvest Crops Get Rate Increase The minimum wage for farm workers paid by piece rate will increase by 11.5% on Jan. 1, 2019, making life more affordable for workers who hand-harvest certain crops in B.C. This increase is the same rate of increase made to the general minimum wage in June 2018. The last increase to the agricultural piece rates took place in September 2017.

In B.C., piece rates are set for 15 different crops, including many products enjoyed by people over the holidays, such as Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, apples, peas, grapes and green beans.

To ensure farm workers paid by piece rate are mak-

ing, and continue to make, a fair wage, the Fair Wages Commission is taking an in-depth look at how to ensure compensation for farmworkers is both fair for workers and sustainable for farm operators.

Karen Taylor, an agricultural economist, is preparing a report to inform this work, which will include input from farmers, as well as workers who hand-harvest crops, on how the piece rate system is working in B.C. The independent Fair Wages Commission was established to advise government on an approach to raising provincial minimum wages with increases that are regular, measured and predictable.
