Just for Fun Home Schooling Humour Day 1: My son tried to call in sick. Day 2: My son just asked, “Dad, what’s a synonym?” And I replied, “It’s a spice” Day 3: Pajama Day! Day 4: My son has already broken the world record for longest amount of time spent sharpening a pencil. Day 5: Me: Don’t forget to write the date at the top of the page. My Son: Dad, what day is it? Me: Uhmmm... I think it’s Tuesday or maybe July I don’t know. Day 6: We are screaming at each other about parallelograms right now. Day 7: My son is better at Super Mario than I thought. Day 8: I just added “I’ll fail you” to my repertoire of empty parenting threats. Day 9: Today there was a lot of yelling & crying, things were thrown around, it was anarchy. But I calmed down and apologized to the kids and they seem OK about it. Day 10: My Son: Ugh, why do I have to do all this stupid work? Me: So you can one day become a brilliant scientist who discovers cures for viruses and saves parents from having to homeschool. Giving ants a 'meal' In response to the Sam's Garden article published in the May 1, 2020 issue of The Lumby Valley Times. After reading the article I thought I would send in my solution to getting rid of ants. For years I have been using corn meal. I place it on a small plastic lid, about the size of a cottage cheese lid, and leave it in
the area where I find the most ants. They seem to love the corn meal and eagerly take it back to their nest to consume it. Unfortunately for the ants, they cannot digest it properly and they end up dying after they eat it. I find this to be an inexpensive, effective and environmentally friendly solution to getting rid of those pesky ants. Ron Gammel, Lumby, BC

So many are as anxious as I am to start planing and playing in their yards and gardens. The nights are looking quite a bit warmer and more like spring weather and soon we should be able to plant with no worries. I also wish to thank Ron who contacted Andrew at Lumby Valley Times with his wonderful suggestion for killing ants that are a problem around the home and garden. The use of cornmeal in a plastic lid such as a yogurt or cottage cheese lid. They cannot digest this but take it home to share with the colony and this will kill them. Simple, inexpensive, safe and ecologically sound. Thank you so much!
A wonderful lady that came shopping on Sunday started my thinking again to those who either are moving, have no garden space or live in apartments. You too can grow a garden with the use of a variety of containers and the sky is the limit. Anything that will hold soil or made to hold soil will do. Let your creative self have its way! You need not spend money on expensive pots when old kettles, chairs, drift wood, plastic pails and containers, old boots, bird cages, wooden boxes made from woods like cedar that will not rot away. Even old tires can be stacked and painted to make attractive planters. The beauty of containers is
that they can be moved to areas of more shade or sun the pot or among the plants. Like I said they sky’s the as needed. If there is no way to ensure good drainage be sure to put a couple of inches of small rocks in the bottom of the container. You can also make a water garden to grace your deck by lining a wooden barrel half with plastic. Be sure to throw in a couple of gold fish as this will prevent mosquitos from invading your yard. Remember to dead head flowering plants and water the soil not the leaves of the plant to prevent disease and keep a spray bottle of soapy water for when you notice insects on your plants. You can use interesting rocks, pieces of wood, figurines or glass bottles around the edges of

New Moon 2. Waxing (growing) Crescent Moon 3. First Quarter Moon 4. Waxing Gibbous Moon (More than 1/2 a Moon, But less than a Full New Moon)

Now for the Full Moons: We normally will only get one Full Moon in a one month cycle, but every once in awhile we will have two, this rare Moon type is called "A Blue Moon". In a calendar year we have 365 days, but the Moon's cycle of phases only gives us 354 days making this 11 days short in a calendar year, so about every couple of years the Moon cycle is completed by having 2 Moons in one month ( the Moon is not actually Blue) The next Blue Moon will be October 31 2020, yup that's right this is the year for a Blue Moon. The Blue Moons after that will be: August 31 2023, May 31 2026, December 31 2028

s soon as Maddie arrived, the quartet set out for the Duggan homestead. Dark was descending, but the route to the property was short and well-travelled. Once the horses were into a comfortable rhythm, the conversation swung to the matter at hand. John turned to the young policeman, "Now Constable Brown, tell us what it is about the murder scene that has you so skeptical? Most folks believe it's a simple case of murder-suicide. What leads you to question that?" John was known across Canada for his dogged pursuit of the truth in criminal matters. The young constable’s refusal to accept easy answers impressed the seasoned detective. "Please, sir, call me Reggie. When we get to the farmhouse, I'll show you, but I'm almost positive that Sly's gun did not cause the wounds. And, something is bothering me about the angle of the shot that killed Mr. LaForest." "Interesting observations young...Reggie… I'm open to sharing my insights with you. Ah, here we are already. Where are our guards? There's a light in the kitchen. Blast!
