While there have only been minor instances of localized flooding reported, the RDNO encourages residents to take precautionary measures for flood prevention and property protection. You can fill your sandbags at the Cherryville Community Hall and in Lumby they are across from the arena. Please bring your own shovel. Please practice physical distancing.

Where Lies the Future of Richlands Forest Blocks?

In the early 1900s, a large area of Creighton Valley in Cherryville was subdivided into 10 and 20 acre Crown land lots and promoted internationally as a fruit growing region by a Richlands land development company. Although some private property existed in the area before the subdivision, it seems that the company’s prospective investors had to apply for a land grant or purchase the new lots from the government. The entire Richlands saga is a fascinating part of Cherryville history, but that’s not really what this article is about. More precisely, the future of eight lots from this original Richlands subdivision, 80 acres of forested Crown land bounded by Mitchell Road and Puckett Road, has in recent months become a hot topic of conversation in Cherryville.

Some 20 years ago, a group of concerned Cherryville residents worked on a Community Plan which included discussions between RDNO Area E director at the time, Eugene Foisy, and BC Lands, to protect this particular tract of land for green space and animal habitat.

Now, 20 years later, many people have been surprised to learn that Tolko has expressed an interest in charting these properties for timber harvest. Local residents have expressed serious concern that Tolko harvesting is not a good fit for the future of this block. The contiguous properties in question are the only publicly accessible forested lots in an extensive rural residential area of Cherryville, used over many years for local hiking, horseback riding and other recreational activities.

This winter Cherry Ridge Management Committee directors had meetings and communications with the Ministry of Forests, local forestry professionals, legal and financial counsel, RDNO (director Hank Cameron, alternate director Eugene Foisy) and other Cherryville community leaders (Advisory Planning Commission chair Clint Whitecotton, Community Club president Lynne Frerichs) to discuss alternative options for these properties in an active exchange of perspectives and proposals. At each event CRMC directors have consistently promoted the possibility of purchasing these Crown lots

for ownership by the Cherryville community, to be managed by CRMC strictly for forest health as a long term natural resource for Cherryville residents. Support for this option has been very positive.

Industrial logging on Crown land and private land in the past few years has severely constricted important wildlife corridors and habitat in the Richlands region.

These properties represent a last chance to mitigate human impacts on local wildlife and inevitable human/ wildlife conflict.

Everyone recognizes that logging is a long established, essential service industry in BC. But there is a need for diversity in forest management options, not just one way to manage every forested area in our beautiful province. If this land can be purchased as private property

by CRMC, any land management decisions would be entirely determined by the community, independent of provincial regulations which govern the Cherryville Community Forest and other government forestry tenures. Community ownership is the only way to guarantee local control.

Acquiring and managing these properties is well within the mandate of CRMC. Directors have often discussed the advantages of buying land suitable for forestry education and research purposes; these properties would be an ideal asset for the community. Arranging financing for the purchase may be a more realistic possibility now than it was in the past, but supporters realize it will take considerable work to achieve this goal. “We would be adding to the work that started 20 plus years ago when Cherryville was not in a position to purchase this tract of land”, said past RDNO director Foisy.

Monthly CRMC general meetings at the community hall have been disrupted in the current period of COVID-19 restrictions, at a time when CRMC directors urgently need to engage Cherryville residents in a critical decision making process. Does Cherryville think CRMC should continue to pursue the idea of purchasing these Richlands properties? Don’t wait until we can resume our monthly public meetings, whenever that may be. Let us know what you think now.

It is early yet and due to our practice of social distancing, hand washing and disinfecting we are making a difference and can hold our heads high for the lives it has saved and the proof that we are strong and united as a community and country. Spring has been slow in coming and we still are experiencing cooler nights than usual.

Although it has slowed the growth in our yards and in my greenhouse, I am hoping it will also slow the flooding that has already started. My heart goes out to all the people on Rawlings Lake Road who have been affected.

My lawn has finally been totally raked and cleared of all the debris that came down over the winter and that last wind storm. The small amount of rain has perked up the green and it is starting to grow nicely. Now is the time to look for problems like Snow Mold, Fairy Ring and other diseases, pests and weeds that can invade home lawns and plan an attack. Most of these problems are due to poor drainage and unfertilized lawns. This repair should be done in late May or early June, this is also the time you should consider Aerating the lawn. This entails taking small cores of soil from your lawn by means of an aeration tool. This is extremely good for lawns that are created in clay soil, which we have in our area in abundance. This treatment will allow oxygen, water and nutrients to penetrate efficiently. This in turn will allow the grass to grow and will help deter weeds and disease. The use of chemical fertilizers should be avoided as it is unhealthy for you, your

mone which causes broad leafed plants to grow so fast that they die, this works well for plants and the seeds of chickweed, plantain, creeping charley and several other invasive weeds. More and more fertilizes that you can purchase at garden centres and hardware stores are now based on organic practises due to people demanding them. You can create a mixture of bone meal or another type of nitrogen based fertilizer, sand, soil and grass seed to help regenerate bare spots and generally improve the soil that promotes a good lawn. Fairy Ring and Mushrooms will not usually appear until late summer and early fall however good spring efforts will reduce or eradicate this problem. There are many types of seed that can be applied to strengthen your lawn and one should be aware of their hardiness and suitability in full sun or shade.

I have recently had a friend who is being inundated by ants. If you can find their colonies (not necessarily hills) and they are in an area that you can pour boiling water do so and stir them up.

Repeat often it is a satisfying and effective method of destroying them and their nest site. Also a mixture of icing sugar or white sugar and borax can be applied in areas that you find them traveling along the house or planting beds.

This however can be dangerous for pets and children so it may be better to bait a trap that will allow the ants entry but prevent other exposures. A container can be made with small holes that will allow the ants to enter can be used. A mixture of .5 cup sugar 1.5 tablespoons of borax and 1 cup of water will work.

Be careful of getting any of the mixtures dry or wet on your plants, although Borax is a mineral it also can be used as an efficient herbicide and you do not want it on your valued plants.

Social Distancing, Self-Isolation What to do with yourself?

Are you being pro-active with social distancing or self-isolation? Are you asking yourself “What can I do to not be bored?”. This is an opportune time to self-reflect and make plans.

“Even just opening a window and taking 10 deep breaths, doing a free three-minute meditation or writing down 10 things you’re grateful for. And how about limiting how much news you’re taking in in a day” Here are some more suggestions to lessen your boredom: • Call a friend, try to connect with daily and share with each other how you are doing • Engage in a healthy diet • Read a book, try a different topic than you normally read • Journal each day. Note the weather, news, connection with friends, your feelings, etc.

• Watch that movie you have wanted to see, classic, romance, horror…

• Chat online • Keep active, some exercise indoors or even a walk outdoors while keeping distance • Do Yoga or Pilates. Practice touching your toes • Try sewing, knitting or crocheting • Plan and strategize for the future • Clear out your wardrobe • Do crossword/Sudoku • Make a photo album or go through older pictures • Plant some flowers or herbs • Organize your dresser drawers or kitchen drawers

• Play music to avoid watching TV all day • Dance through your home • Give yourself a manicure • Make a bucket list • Play solitaire or do a puzzle • Learn something new, a language, an instrument, a game, etc • Let your creative juices flow, do drawing, painting, sculpting • Find a hobby • Paint a room • Sit outside in the sun, even if it’s chilly dress appropriately • DYI - Fix stuff • Rearrange your bookshelf • Do a deep clean, that fridge or oven you have been putting off • Make a virtual book or movie club with friends We hope you try some of these suggestions. Talk with friends and discuss what they may be doing to curb their boredom. Know that you aren’t alone at this time.

Cockatoos: A Popular Bird There are 21 species of the Cockatoo and yes they are a part of the Parrot family, each of these species live in Australia, Indonesia, and around New Guinea.

All of them have a Crest that they can raise up and down.

The one in the picture is called a Little Corella, also known as a Bare- Eye, Blood Stained, and Blue -Eyed Cockatoo's. This species of the Cockatoos is much smaller than other Cockatoos they are about 14 - 17 in. in length, and their wing length is about 11.5 - 13 in. they only weigh about 10.6 - 16 oz. with a shorter

crest and bill. The crest is short and broad, between their eyes, and on the side of the bill, the base of the feathers to their head and nape is a beautiful pinky orange color. Around the ears along with the underside of the feathers are tinged with a light yellow. The bill is a grayish color and around the eyes are a bluish - grey with hints of pinky- orange circles. The feet are a grey color.

With this type of Cockatoo it is hard to tell the males from the females, the males are slightly larger, and with larger heads and beaks, but unless you have a pair it is hard to know which is male or female.

The Little Corella Cockatoo can be very playful, almost like a clown. They are very affectionate, but very demanding.

They need to be out of their cage no matter how big the cage is, as long as you are home. Be careful though if you leave them out of the cage when you are not home, as even though they are playful and loving, they can also be very naughty as they have a destructive side to them as well. They eat seeds, nuts

and fruit sometimes a little bit of yogurt as well. But be careful with giving them to much of the fatty foods like nuts to often, as it will make them overweight and unhappy.

Little Corella can live 50- 70 years Cookie was a male Cockatoo that apparently was hatched in June 30 1933 and passed away August 27 2016 at the Brookfield Zoo near Chicago making him 83 years old, the longest recorded Cockatoo on record so far.

More Support For Commercial Truck Drivers During COVUD-19 Crisis

To improve travel for commercial truck drivers, the Government of B.C. is funding the installation of portable toilets at several commercial vehicle pull-outs, inspection stations and chain-up locations throughout the province.

Commercial truck drivers play an important role in maintaining the supply chain by delivering essential goods during the COVID-19 pandemic. The drivers ensure people around the province continue to have access to the items they need, including food and medicine. The Case Of The Misplaced Murderer Part III, A Startling Discovery

he four posse members returned at a gallop around 10 a.m.

Their faces betrayed that what they found was anything but a prank. The crowd surging out from the cafe to meet them fell silent. Frank, first to the homestead, blurted, “both of them cold, lifeless. Albert shot in the back, Sly in the head, gun by his hand.”

Word spread quickly from person to person: Murder! Suicide! Albert Duggan and Sly LaForest shot dead. Someone whispered, “there’s no police here, a constable will have to come from Vernon before the bodies are moved...unless....” Eyes shifted to John Wilson Murray.

“No, absolutely not! I’m on vacation and out of my jurisdiction. I’ll nae step on the toes of the local constabulary. Maddie, Angus lets off! I don’t want to get tangled up in this”. Nevertheless, he began barking out orders. “You there! Mount up and get to Vernon right away. And you, go back to the Duggan homestead. Keep the curious away until the copper arrives - take someone with you. No one, including you two, is to touch anything in that house.”

“John, it sounds like a murder-suicide, does it not?” queried Angus. “Surely, Albert was after Sidney for money. Sly must have lost his mind when he saw he’d killed him and then shot himself.”

“But, Angus,” Maddie spoke up “why was Sly at the homestead at all? Mr. Duggan always visits his clients at their residence. Mr. LaForest may have been a gambler and drinker, but I cannot see him shooting a man in the back! Despite his faults, he was a good man.”

“Whatever,” John rumbled “it’s none of our business. Angus, shall we take a ramble around your wee Village before lunch. Maddie, will you join us? I’d like to hear more about why you defend this “Sly,” per-

In order to make sure everyone in B.C. has access to the goods they need, the Province has created a new Provincial Supply Chain Coordination Unit to assist with co-ordinating the distribution of goods and services. The Province has also launched the COVID-19 Supply Hub, a made-in-B.C. online platform to co-ordinate, find and speed up the delivery of medical supplies and personal protective equipment for provincial health authorities to support front-line health workers.

ers. Members of the BC Trucking Association have spearheaded the Meals for Truck Drivers BC pilot, setting up food trucks at various commercial cardlocks throughout the province. Restaurants such as Tim Hortons have reopened many locations along Canadian highways for take-out and restroom use for commercial drivers.

Vancouver radio station Red FM has contacted the ministry to fund the installation of additional portable toilets in Surrey and Delta to support the commercial vehicle industry. The ministry is working with Red FM to identify locations and co-ordinate installation this week.

The ministry is following the advice and orders of the provincial health officer and the fed-

eral government to keep British Columbians as safe as possible and help to stop the spread of COVID-19. While highways and roads remain open, the provincial health officer recommends people stay close to home and avoid any non-essential travel.

Quick Facts: • There are 203 rest areas in the province, all of which are equipped with toilet facilities.

This includes 48 seasonal facilities that are open from early spring to mid-November.

• There are also 55 brake checks and 39 chain-up areas to support commercial truck drivers throughout B.C.
