In these interesting and challenging times, it's great when we take that extra step to help others.

On Easter Sunday, Ernie Hurd, did just that.

With physical distancing in mind and the help of his sisters Val & Christine, brother-in-law Keith, Cassidy (a.k.a. "The Easter Bunny") and Cora, they handed out Easter treats,

allowed kids to have their photos taken with the Easter Bunny and asked the families to draw hearts on the driveway for some fun and to show support for our great community. Jerry and Cooper even made an appearance.

Thank you for bringing a little of the Easter spirit to our community.

Just for Fun My Self-Isolation Quarantine Diary

• Day 1 - I Can Do This!! Got enough food and wine to last a month!

• Day 2 - Opening my 8th bottle of Wine. I fear wine supplies might not last!

• Day 3 - Strawberries: Some have 210 seeds, some have 235 seeds. Who Knew??

• Day 4- 8:00pm. Removed my Day Pajamas and put on my Night Pajamas.

• Day 5 - Today, I tried to make Hand Sanrtizer. It came out as Jello Shots!!

• Day 6 - I get to take the Garbage out. I'm So excited, I can't decide what to wear.

• Day 7 - Laughing way too much at my own jokes!!

• Day 8 -Went to a new restaurant called "The Kitchen". You have to gather all the ingredients and make your own meal. I have No clue how this place is still in business.

• Day 9 - I put liquor bottles in every room. Tonight, I'm getting all dressed up and going Bar hopping.

• Day 10 - Struck up a conversation with a Spider today. Seems nice. He's aWeb Designer.

• Day 11 - Isolation is hard. I swear my fridge just said, "What the hell do you want now?"

• Day 12 - I realized why dogs get so excited about something moving outside, going for walks or car rides. I think I just barked at a squirrel.

A LUMBY VILLAGE MYSTERY

The Case Of The Misplaced Murderer Donna Easto Characters: Madeleine (Maddie) Arnold, church organist, spinster, Angus McAllister, retired naval officer, church caretaker, elderly widower John Wilson Murray, retired naval officer, police detective Albert Duggan, homesteader, part-time tax collector, bachelor Sidney “Sly” LaForest, prospector, gambler, bachelor ear reader, you will recall from the “Case of the Purloined Pudding” that Miss Maddie Arnold was considered an accomplished sleuth in the sleepy Village of Lumby.

Over the intervening year since solving that perplexing puzzle, life had been relatively quiet. Her only case involved the mysterious disappearance of a flock of fine, fat turkeys from a farmyard. However, the year had witnessed the blossoming of a romance between Madeleine and Angus McAllister. Angus was a striking figure of a man whose time spent as an officer in the navy was evident in his posture and commanding presence. A soft burr in his speech revealed a Scottish homeland. The couple was devoted to each other, and the subject of much local gossip. Was a marriage in the future?

The gossip mill was in full swing that October day a handsome stranger had ridden into town, inquiring after Angus McAllister. A gaggle of the local youngsters were only too happy to direct him to the churchyard where Angus was doing some weeding. Looking up at the small parade heading his way, Angus declared loudly, “John, as I live and breathe. Never thought to see you again, you old sea dog.” Turning to the boys, he teased, “Best behave you pack of rascals, this here is my friend, the famous Detective, John Wilson Murray.”

At that moment, Maddie emerged from the church where she’d been practicing the hymns for Sunday service. “Angus, what on earth?” Flustered on spotting the stranger, she apologized, “Oh, I beg your pardon, uh... sir. I didn’t realize you were out here.”

Smiling, she turned to the boys, “Now away with you, you little urchins. I’ll see you in church on Sunday.”

At that, the unruly lads vanished. Within minutes word about the visitor would be spreading like wildfire throughout the Village.

“Madeleine, let me introduce you to John Murray, we were boys together in Edinburgh. And we served together in the navy. It seems like a lifetime ago.

John’s gone on to be a Detective with a big city police force. The city papers call him the “Great Canadian Detective.” John, this is Miss Madeleine Arnold, church organist and my own dear love.”

After the appropriate pleasantries, Maddie announced, “I must get back to my music for Sunday.

But, I expect both of you to arrive at my home at 5:00 p.m. sharp for dinner. It seems we three have much in common and much to talk about. Delighted to make your acquaintance, Detective Murray.” Giving Angus a quick kiss on the cheek, and a backward glance at John Murray, she disappeared into the sanctuary.

At that, John grabbed Angus in a bear hug, declaring, “Angus, I’m so happy to see you settled and clearly in love again. You’re a lucky man. Now, where am I to lay my head tonight? You and Madeleine aren’t????”

“Oh, no,” Angus countered robustly, “but, you might receive an invitation to the nuptials by this time next year. You’ll have to settle for my modest bachelor abode. We have a lot to catch up on. I read great things in the newspapers about your time with the Canada Southern Railway and your recent work with the Toronto constabulary. Maddie will be intrigued by your success using scientific methods to solve crime. She’s something of a detective herself.”

Samantha Nason BS Ranch & Greenhouses Several people have told me about a product called Thieves that is a essential oil with natural antibacterial, anti fungal properties. So of course I did a little research. It is made from lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary oils. Its antibacterial properties have even been proven to work against MRSA bacteria.

Its history is quite a interesting and begins during the Bubonic plague in the 15th century in France. Several thieves were caught robbing the dead and dying of this plague and they never became ill. The king told them that for the secret to their immunity that that they would escape the usual punishment which was to be burned at the stake. So of course they revealed the recipe which they used on their hands, feet, ears and in a bird like mask over their faces. True to the kings word the thieves were not burned at the stake, they were hung. Today these essential oils are made into sprays, soaps and other surface cleaners. It is available from several sources including health food stores. It is to be used for topical use only and should not be ingested and I also saw a warning for its use if pregnant.

Canadian Mental Health Association to Receive Additional Online Mental Health Supports for COVID-19 Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Vernon and District Branch is proud to offer expanded supports during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis with generous funding announced today from the Province of B.C. Virtual peer support and phonebased BounceBack coaching are two of the programs that have received additional funding support in our communities.

“We are so appreciative to have additional resources and funding for these programs as we are navigating our way through this crisis,” said Julia Payson, Executive Director at CMHA Vernon.

“CMHAs across BC have seen a strong increase in demand for mental health support over the past month, and it is a relief to have this support from the province to strengthen our response.”

CMHA Vernon has transitioned many of its programs to online and phone-based supports.

On-site activity is expected to begin as early as midApril. Work will follow all Provincial recommendations and WorkSafeBC protocol for safe COVID-19 construction operations. Construction is classified as an essential service by the Government of British Columbia.

Background The Pat Duke Memorial Arena provides ice time for a variety of users, including minor hockey, figure skating, ringette and leisure ice uses, and has been serving the community since 1967.

Unfortunately, due to its age, the needs of all of the facility users are not being met. Due to an insufficient number of change rooms, female ice users have had to use inadequate facilities during co-ed play. The arena also poses challenges for users with mobility issues and does not meet today’s standards for accessibility.

As part of a community effort that began in 2016, residents and users came together and initiated fundraising to improve amenities in the arena. As a result of these efforts, Lumby won Kraft Hockeyville 2016, receiving $100,000 to put towards improving the facility.

Additional funding for the project included a grant from TELUS, and community fundraising totalling $75,000, and $230,000 provided by the RDNO through the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture service The $3,000,000 project is focused on adding four new change rooms and renovating the existing change rooms, and will also include upgrades to make the facility more operationally effective, safe, and energy-efficient.

The funding for this project has enabled a significant renovation and expansion to this cherished community arena, allowing it to continue to serve the North Okanagan well into the future.
