HAPPY EASTER!
www.lumbyvalleytimes.ca
Here's a Few Easter Ideas You Can Do at Home!
Decorate eggs You can boil eggs and use food dye or even food from your own pantry (like beets, turmeric or onion skins) to create multicolored eggs for Easter Have an indoor Easter egg hunt Hide eggs in the dryer, under your bed or in the cabinet (make sure they don’t fall and crack). Then watch your loved ones look around for them Do Easter-themed arts and crafts Make paper bunnies or craft flowers out of cardboard; the possibilities are endless. Watch Easter-themed movies Whether you choose the fun route with a film like “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” or “Hop” or opt for deeper fare like “The Passion of the Christ,” “The Robe” or “Ben-Hur,” an Easter screening is a safe and fun way to acknowledge the holiday.
Live stream a church service If church is part of your family’s Easter tradition, you can still attend your Sunday morning service from the comfort of your home. Though many physical churches have closed their doors to comply with social distancing, services are still happening via livestream platforms like Facebook Live and on church websites. You can even dress up. Whip up some Easter-themed snacks Devilled eggs, cookies or even brownies will be a sweet way to celebrate Easter indoors. Read books about Easter Gather your little ones around or channel your inner child with stories like “The Biggest Easter Basket Ever” by Steven Kroll or “Chicken Sunday” by Patricia Polacco.

Trudeau Government's 'Buy-Back' Gun Program Likely A Multi-Billion Boondoggle
Gary Mauser, SFU professor emeritus, Republished from the Fraser Institute Public Safety Minister Bill Blair’s plan to confiscate 250,000 firearms from their legal owners would cost the Canadian taxpayer between $1.6 billion to almost $5 billion in the first year, at least. This estimate is for just one phase of the “buy back” program. In his mandate letter to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, Prime Minister Trudeau gave the highest priority to prohibiting and confiscating “military-style assault rifles.” And this week, during a federal cabinet retreat in Winnipeg, Minister Blair reiterated the government’s commitment to the plan. This program is being called a “buy back,” but actually it’s a mandated confiscation of legally-purchased firearms for which the government will compensate owners at a rate the government deems “suitable.” Only owners who can document their legal ownership will be compensated, and non-compliance will be a criminal act. Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon is punishable by imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years. Minister Blair has not been forthcoming in explain-
ing which firearms will be prohibited and confiscated as “military-style assault rifles.” In New Zealand, the government’s recent “buy back” program included centre-fire rifles and some shotguns, as well as pump action and lever action firearms. Speculation about the cost of this “buy back” has focused on how much owners will be paid for surrendering their guns. For instance, CBC reported that Minister Blair claimed the cost for the “buy back” of roughly 250,000 firearms would be between $400 million and $600 million—$375 million for the guns and presumably the rest for overhead. That is, if owners comply. However, the actual full cost of the “buy back” won’t be $600 million; it will be much more. Focusing on reimbursement costs is misleading because it ignores the biggest expense—staffing costs. Prohibiting and confiscating an estimated 250,000 firearms is a complex undertaking and would involve considerable government resources. It’s impossible to do with current police resources. How much will taxpayers be billed for this boondoggle? My best estimate for Ottawa’s confiscation plan is in the billions.

Stay Connected! In an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus, Canada is increasing the stringent measures to keep people apart. The vast majority of the population accepts that this is the responsible thing to do but losing everyday social connections can also come with a heavy psychological cost and this could get weightier as these measures drag on. In response to the accelerating pandemic, a growing number of provinces have banned all non-essential activities and asked Canadians to simply stay home. All across our country, schools and offices have gone online, restaurants and shopping malls are closed and nursing homes have had to ban visitors. Hopefully this social distancing will stop, or at least slow, the spread of COVID-19 but for numerous seniors, a lack of social connectedness takes a huge toll on mental health and well-being. The elderly are not only more at risk if they are to fall ill but many already
experience high rates of social isolation. Quarantined seniors can experience both short and long term mental health struggles including stress, insomnia, emotional exhaustion and anxiety. A lack of necessary supplies and telecommunication services can compound these feelings. Visiting seniors can be dangerous, at this time, but please keep in touch! Pick up the phone and make some calls, Skype. FaceTime or write a letter. All of these are great ways to show that you care while still abiding by social distancing rules. Our community has recently formed the Lumby Helping Hands Committee (CO-VID Relief Group) to ensure that no one (seniors and/or shut-ins specifically) go without during this difficult time. This group will assist in accessing, providing and delivering the essentials that are needed. For more information on this invaluable service please call; Norma 778-212-2397,

Interior Health Temporarily Suspends Pay Parking
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Interior Health is temporarily suspending pay parking for the public, staff and physicians at its sites where pay parking exists, effective April 1 until further notice. This step is intended to help support the public, as well as our dedicated staff and physicians, during this challenging time, and also reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission from the continued use of pay parking machines. Interior Health pay parking ma-
chines require individuals to touch screens and buttons that may have been touched by someone previously. Discontinuing the use of pay parking machines reduces the risk of potential spread of infection and also supports physical distancing measures that have been mandated by the Provincial Health Officer. To ensure equitability for all staff and medical staff, whether they are working from home or at health authority sites, Interior Health is
also temporarily suspending payroll deductions for parking fees. Interior Health reminds everyone about the importance of limiting close contact with others by staying a minimum of six feet apart outside our homes, frequent handwashing, using virtual options to connect with others, limiting shopping to only essential outings, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home if you are sick. For the latest information about COVID-19, please visit: https:// news.interiorhealth.ca/covid-19/

So Very Tall & Elegant PUBLIC NOTICE WATER MAIN FLUSHING
The Village of Lumby Public Works Department will be performing routine hydrant maintenance & flushing from April 13th to early May. If you experience some discoloration, running your tap for a few minutes should clear up the water. Village of Lumby Public Works Department
Can you imagine being so tall that you could eat from the top of the trees? Or how about weighing 2,600 to 4,250 pounds and all you eat is leaves and buds? And yet you can still run up 35 miles per hour for short distances, but they can wander comfortably at about 10 miles per hour over long distances. Well if you were a Giraffe you would be able to do all of these things. Giraffes are the tallest mammals on earth. They can grow from 14 - 19 feet. They can live in the wild up to about 25 years. In captivity about 30-34 years. All though their spots may look the same they are not, as each Giraffe's pattern is different from the others. When the Giraffe ages their spots turn black not grey. Their eyesight is impeccable. If one Giraffe stares off into the distance, the other Giraffes will follow the gaze where they can see a lion a one km away. These gentle giants are very passive even when a couple of bulls have an argument they may butt their heads and necks together, usually there is no blood, instead one of them will just submit to the other and walk away. Although there has been cases when one bull got very powerful and kills his opponent. The Giraffes will usually be in very small groups of about 12 or so. Being as tall as they are the Giraffes can eat from the tree tops, with their 21 inch long tongue, and scout for predators. Giraffes eat constantly eating about 100 145 pounds per day causing them to always be moving from one spot to another looking for food. A Giraffes heart is

about 2 feet long, and weighs about 25 pounds. Being so tall also has it's downfalls they find it extremely hard and dangerous to drink from the water hole, the tall Giraffes have to spread and bend their very long legs in an uncomfortable position making them an easy target for predators. Luckily these beautiful creatures have only to drink every several days, and get most of their water from the plants they eat. A female can start to breed by age 4 or 5. They carry their young for 15 months ( wow) When giving birth the female Giraffe will stand with her legs apart, the poor little calves get a great surprise falling about 5 or more feet from their mother when released from the womb. Usually there is only one calf born at one time, it is very rare to have twins. The calf is already almost 6 feet tall when born, and weighs about 200- 220 pounds. Within half an hour the baby Giraffes can stand on their own and within ten hours can run beside their mothers. The biggest predators to the young Giraffes are Lions and Hyenas, more than half of the calves die this way. Giraffes have also been known to kill a Lion. The oldest known Giraffe was at the San Antonio Zoo in 1995 her name was Rosie she was 40 years old.

Mikkie's Corner, from page 9 the loss of muscle tissue. Only strength training maintains our muscle mass and strength throughout our midlife years. After the age of 20 up to 1/2 pound of muscle tissue is lost per year in both males and females owing to the normal ageing process. Avoid Metabolic Rate Reduction – because muscle is very active tissue, muscle loss is accompanied by a reduction in our resting metabolism (calorie burn). Research indicates that an average adult experiences a 5% reduction in metabolic rate every decade of life. Only high intensity strength training can avoid this. Increase Muscle Mass – because most adults do not perform strength exercise, they need to first replace the tissue that has been lost through inactivity. Fortunately, research shows that a standard strength training program can increase muscle mass by about 4 kg or 10 lbs over a ten-week period. Increase Metabolic Rate – Research reveals that adding 10 lbs of muscle increases our resting metabolism by 7% and our daily calorie requirements by 15%. At rest, 2 lbs of muscle requires 77 calories per day for tissue maintenance and during exercise, muscle energy utilization increases dramatically. Adults who replace muscle

through sensible strength exercise use more calories all day long thereby reducing the likelihood of fat accumulation. Reduce Body Fat – Studies have shown that strength exercise produced 10 lbs of fat loss after two months of training, even though the subjects were eating 155 more calories per day. That is, a basic strength-training program resulted in 8 lbs more muscle, 10 lbs less fat and more calories per day food intake. Increase Bone Mineral Density – The effects of progressive resistance exercise are similar for muscle tissue and bone tissue. The same training stimulus that increases muscle strength also increases bone density and mineral content. This was shown in a study that demonstrated significant increases in the bone mineral density of the upper femur after four months of strength training. Make sure to check out DEEM Health Facebook Page. We are posting videos, tips and demonstrations on how to workout at home during this time of isolation. We want to help keep you healthy.
