In an effort to allow 811 health-care professionals to support more people who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or who require assistance with other health issues, the Province has created a dedicated phone service to provide British Columbians non-medical information about COVID-19. This includes the latest information on travel recommendations and social distancing, as well as access to support and resources from the provincial and federal governments. British Columbians can reach service representatives seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., by calling 1-888-COVID19. I hope you all are practicing appropriate social distancing and hand washing frequently. Adherence now will help keep you and your love ones healthy and hopefully help to bring this pandemic to an end. PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE ensure you and your love ones put these practices in place. Countries like China and Korea have seen considerable reductions in the spread of the virus because of these practices. These countries
As we will be spending more time at home I can’t think of anything more enjoyable and soul satisfying than to plant gardens and beautify our surroundings. Many will not be able to start their plants from seed and will need bedding plants. Going to large stores and busy greenhouses may not be the best options and our public markets may not be operating. In my April articles I will be publishing a list of vegetables and flowers that I grow. I have a large variety of types and colours of all the plants I normally grow. You will be able to phone in an order or email me and I will offer these for pickup either at my greenhouse gates or for those unable to get out to my greenhouse I will arrange a way for a convenient pickup. I also sell many plants, vegetables and fruit through the Monashee Co-op and hopefully that will be the same this year. If you are not already an avid gardener now may be a chance to bring this joy into your life. If your yard space is small or not conducive to a garden there is always container gardening. You can produce a lot in a very small space. Just about anything that will hold soil can be used as a container so you can really get creative. Gardening is also a great way to keep children of all ages engaged with the environment and entertained as well. Not to mention having your own fresh vegetables on hand may well be advisable. Most plants should be started by now excepts for all types of Squash, Gourds, Cucumber or Watermelon. These plants germinate quickly and grow too rapidly to start now as they will out grow their containers and some will not like the transplant once the garden is ready to receive them. RDNO Reassures Public that Water is Safe and in Good Supply Amidst Pandemic The Regional District of North Okanagan wants to assure the public that it is taking measures to ensure the continuity of supply and the safety of our drinking water as we maneuver through COVID-19. First and foremost, water supplied through all our drinking water utilities including Greater Vernon Water, Silver Star Water, Grindrod Water, Whitevale Water and Mabel Lake Water is treated through chlorination. Chlorination is an effective treatment against all virus contamination including COVID-19. Both Greater Vernon Water and Silver Star Water utilities also provide additional treatment with UV disinfection. “Staff are also reviewing our operational procedures
and staffing levels and implementing protocols to safeguard the health of our workers to ensure continuity of service,” said Zee Marcolin, General Manager of Utilities, RDNO. “Although not imminent, this could include water use restrictions or delaying agricultural turn on if required.” The RDNO recognizes the challenge that COVID-19 poses to the community. We want to assure our residents that the water supplied by RDNO Utilities will continue in sufficient quantities and is safe for domestic consumption. COVID-19 UPDATE: Impact on scheduled surgical procedures Interior Health (IH) is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to respond to COVID-19. Along with other agencies and health authorities, IH has pandemic plans in place and is prepared to adjust capacity as required. As part of this planning, and following direction from the Ministry of Health on March 16, IH will immediately begin postponing non-urgent scheduled surgeries. It is important to note that urgent and emergency procedures will not be impacted. Patients with scheduled surgeries will be contacted by an IH booking clerk. In addition, for gastrointestinal and endoscopy procedures, patients may be contacted by their surgeon’s office. Patients should wait to be contacted directly about their procedure. Some surgeries, including those related to cancer and scheduled caesarean sections, will not be impacted. Patients will be contacted to confirm date and time.
IH recognizes the significant impact of postponing surgeries. However, this is a necessary step to ensure we have enough hospital capacity for those affected by COVID-19, should we see a rapid increase in demand like other countries have experienced. Interior Health will assess this action over the coming weeks and will advise patients when their procedure has been rebooked. The BC Centre for Disease Control is the recommended resource for provincial information that is accurate and current: http://www.bccdc.ca/. Information is being updated frequently on the site and individuals are encouraged to check back regularly (eg. daily). Coenzyme Q10
Before continuing with last week’s column, I just wanted to say stay safe and healthy. I know Covid-19 is all we hear about lately it and we need to be informed. But if you are being careful and practicing social distancing and isolation, then make sure to do things you love and get your mind off the fear and depression this can bring on. The mind is a powerful thing and if you stay positive and happy you will less likely make yourself sick out of fear or depression and you will also allow your immune system to stay strong. Do things like facetime and or play games online with family or friends, catch up on projects around the house, read a book, go outside while ensuring social distancing (hike, bike ride, walk, jog, sit on your deck) and or catch up on TV series or movies. Try to make a rule where you have free Covid-19 time, where you don’t look at Facebook, listen to the news or talk to family and friends every minute of the day obsessing about it. Instead look for funny feeds or have a good laugh over the phone or online.
Okay back to Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, this is a compound that helps generate energy in your cells. Your body produces CoQ10 naturally, but its production tends to decrease with age and or certain drugs. Both cholesterol and CoQ10 are produced in the body via the same pathway. This pathway is very important as there are several processes that happen with other Coenzymes to make this energy production for CoQ10 and formation of cholesterol. Certain conditions that appear to have low CoQ10 levels are people with diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and heart problems. Research shows that it is unsure if the disease causes
the low levels or if the deficiency appears first, causing cells to age faster. Also, certain drugs show to lower CoQ10 levels as statin drugs (Lipitor®, Zocor®, Pravachol®, Crestor®…) These drugs do their job and thus are prescribed as they inhibit the body’s internal production of cholesterol. But remember CoQ10 and cholesterol formation share the same pathway and the positive thing the drug does causes a negative effect on the other. The same time while these drugs are inhibiting formation of cholesterol, they are also inhibiting the body’s production of CoQ10. Even small decreases in CoQ10 can disrupt the body’s ability to produce energy and cause other compromises in function. For example, in some people taking statins, the lowering of CoQ10 is associated with a weakening of the heart muscle, and overall muscular pain, as well as nausea and diarrhea, liver and kidney damage. So, the prescribing of statins is carefully assessed and to people who usually have 2 key criteria; high cholesterol and high risk for heart disease (family history, obesity, heavy drinking or with diabetes). If you only have high cholesterol changing your diet and a simple exercise plan will usually do the trick. But if you are prescribed to take a statin it is very important to take supplemental CoQ10, as the amount found in foods alone (ex. meat, fish and whole grains) will not be sufficient. This will help in some of the side effects associated with taking a statin as mentioned above. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology, found CoQ10 seemed to decrease muscle breakdown and reduce pain and discomfort from taking a statin. Also, the University of Maryland Medical Center, indicates CoQ10 could also help treat heart failure or be an effective supplement to take before heart surgery. Coldstream Activates EOC And Closes All Parks And Public Spaces
The District of Coldstream has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Monday March 23, 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This is a precautionary measure put in place to address situations should they arise in support of District residents, the public and to support the effects that this pandemic has had on our community. Updates will be provided on the District’s website at www. coldstream.ca. This activation is to ensure that the District of Coldstream is adapting to the COVID-19 directives by the Provincial Medical Health Officer. In support of the public gathering orders and social distancing measures put in place by the Provincial Medical Health Officer, the District of Coldstream is closing all of
its parks, beaches, parking lots and public spaces, including all equipment and infrastructure such as playground equipment, skateboard parks and playing fields effective immediately. We are asking people NOT to gather in public spaces and to respect the two-meter social distancing protocols required by the Provincial Medical Health Officer. This week stuck at home like everyone else, not being able to see my friends, or go shopping in person ( good thing they now have online shopping, but for long I wonder? Will they eventually stop that too?) Like everyone else I have been practicing social distancing (I hope you are as well) I thought I might talk about goals. Everyone has had some at one time or another. I find short to medium term goals work best for me, long term goals might work good for other people.

Village of Lumby Response to COVID-19
Lumby, BC – In an atmosphere that is changing hour by hour the Village of Lumby is very conscious of the health and well-being of our residents and staff while doing everything possible to support local health officials as they work to contain the virus. As with all of you, we will continue to monitor direction from the Federal and Provincial governments as the situation changes.
Currently the Village of Lumby has closed the White Valley Community Centre and the Pat Duke Arena to the public until further notice. The Village will continue to follow orders from the Provincial Health Authorities as they come in, so this situation could change rapidly. Mayor Acton would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we all traverse these trying times. Please remember to be mindful of the social distancing protocols, remember to wash your hands regularly and not touch your face. The best way we can all help one another and limit the spread of this virus is to shop local, limit our movement to other communities, self -isolate if you have been travelling, and contact elderly family members or friends to re-

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Takes Precautionary Measures During Covid-19 Climate The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP wants to ensure the general public that they are taking all the precautionary measures during the current COVID-19 climate. The Vernon RCMP detachment front counter remains open to the general public to assist with non-emergency complaints and enquiries. A limited number of people will be permitted into the detachment waiting room at one time. North Okanagan detachments, which include; Armstrong/Spallumcheen, Enderby, Falkland and Lumby, will remain open however will operate with a reduced administrative staff. All Vernon and North Okanagan detachments have suspended all civilian fingerprinting services. Residents who need to obtain fingerprints for criminal court purposes are still required to at-
tend to the respective North Okanagan detachment. Police are still providing emergency services, but are asking the public to be mindful of what they report and that it is in fact a criminal or public safety matter. We are also asking those that require police assistance to notify our call-takers of any flu-like symptoms, travel or contact with those diagnosed with COVID-19, in order for our frontline police officers to take necessary precautions prior to attendance. The health and safety of our employees and clients is our top priority and we are therefore following the lead of the Canadian public health authorities to take the necessary preventative measures. Coldstream Activates EOC And Closes All Parks And Public Spaces
The District of Coldstream has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Monday March 23, 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This is a precautionary measure put in place to address situations should they arise in support of District residents, the public and to support the effects that this pandemic has had on our community. Updates will be provided on the District’s website at www.coldstream.ca. This activation is to ensure that the District of Coldstream is adapting to the COVID-19 directives by the Provincial Medical Health Officer. In support of the public gathering orders and social distancing measures put in place by the Provincial Medical Health Officer, the District of
