Lumby Midget Stars 2019-2020 OMAHA Female Super League Champions

That’s a wrap for regular season play and the Lumby Stars Midgets are this years league champions!

The Stars worked hard as a team all season and won the OMAHA 2019-2020 Female Super League.

Lumby Bantam Stars

The first game of the playoffs for the Bantam Lumby Stars sponsored by Bannister GM faced off on Saturday against Vernon 1 (Murray) at the Pat Duke Arena. First period was scoreless and then Grady Krause got the stars on the scoreboard 4 minutes into the second period with assists going to Tori Maltman and Riley Dewhirst. Vernon tied it up and then Jace Catt scored from Krause and Jenna Maltman.

Vernon came back in the third and scored 2 goals to win 3-2.

Sunday afternoon the Bantam stars hosted the league champions Salmon Arm 1 (Gervais). First period was scoreless and then Krause had a beauty breakaway goal to put the

The Pat Duke Memorial Arena was rocking Monday night with the Bantam Lumby Stars coming back from being down 2-0 and winning 5-2. Grady Krause and Tori Maltman both sniped in two sweet goals each and Riley Dewhirst had a bullet from the point and hit the top right hand corner.

Jace Catt picked up 2 assists while James Wraight earned the win between the pipes. It was a complete team effort from Jaida Sauvie, Kiel Hayward, Colton Young, Raye Agema, Matthew Yaremcio were looking for a third regular season NOSL banner to finish off their last year. The team used great offence and Defense both on the ice and in net to rise to the challenge and come on top 5-1 to become North Okanagan Super League 2019/20 Champions in front of a loud and proud home town crowd. The first period had a lot of back and forth opportunities with both net minders making several great saves. Ethan Keber kept the Salmon arm team off the scoreboard until just under 4 minutes left in the game on a power play rush Quintin O’Neil in the corner found Linden Catt who made no mistake in burying the puck into the back of the net to go up 1-0 to end the first period. Just 45 seconds into the second period Tye Krause made a great move to break away and make it 2-0 unassisted. The Salmon Arm team made it 2-1 at 11:58 only to have Catt answer back 40 seconds later assisted by Krause and Matthew

Yaremcio to put the lead by 2 again into the ice clean. The Third period was nothing but the Stars as Ryder Quibell found O’Neill to make a great pass into a goal to go up 4-1 at 13:20 of the 3rd. There was many chances with Conner Seehaver ringing one off the post and the Stars defence working hard to keep the puck in the Salmon Arm end and stopping any odd man rushes with the forwards also doing a great job back checking. It was at 2:53 of the 3rd period that Tage Kineshanko made a great pass to Jordyn Morris who scored a beauty to make the final 5-1 and become NOSL Champions.

Join the Monashee Arts Council for our first ever Lumby Paint Party! This will be an afternoon of painting and socializing … and the best part is that you get to keep your amazing work of art. The theme of the painting is “camping under the stars”. You will be guided through the project by Lumby’s very own teaching artist, Loretta West. All supplies for the event will be provided. Understanding Fat And The Types!

Last week I introduced MUFA’s monounsaturated Fatty Acids, in dark chocolate and this week I want to explain more on all fat’s benefits and risks. Lipids or fats, are substances that do not dissolve in water, and are necessary for survival. We need fat for things like the maintenance of cellular membranes and to help us absorb fat-soluble vitamins. In addition, they are a high-density energy source, give taste, consistency, and stability to foods and make us feel full after eating. Internally lipids cushion organs and insulate the body. Finally, they provide raw materials for vitamin D and hormones.

different names; hydrogenation, partially hydrogenated and to a degree mono-diglycerides in the way it is manufactured. These are artificial trans fats and have been officially banned from Canada’s food supply, with a grace period for manufactures. That means there are still many products out there containing trans fats as; baked goods (donuts, pastries…), certain popcorns, fries and other packaged goods in order to extend shelf life. Some foods have natural trans fats to them like beef and most people are aware of the risks associated with eating too much of them.

Trans Fats The most dangerous of the group! They cause heart attacks by way of clogged arteries as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol rises in the blood while high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol lowers. Beware and look at your food labels. First make sure the label states 0g (grams) trans fats. Secondly read your label of ingredients as many trans fats are called

Saturated Fatty Acids (SFA) These mostly come from hard fats like meats, butter, heavy creams, cheese.... These do have their place; they keep our cells strong but take awhile to latch on and cause some free radical damage along the way. We only need a small % about 10-15% of total caloric load in a day. That means women could eat roughly about 10-15 grams and men about 15-20 grams. Some nuts, seeds, MCT oil and

Best Choices for Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids (Linoleic Acid): • Flaxseed oil, flaxseeds, flaxseed meal, • hempseed oil, hempseeds, • grapeseed oil, • pumpkin seeds, • Pignolia (pine) nuts, • pistachio nuts, • raw sunflower seeds (raw), • borage oil, • evening primrose oil, • black currant seed oil • Acai • Corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, and cottonseed oils are also sources of linoleic acid, but are refined and may be deficient in nutrients

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) Best Choices for Omega-9 Essential Fatty Acids (Oleic Acid) While Omega-9 is not technically classified as an essential fatty acid because our bodies can manufacture it –however foods rich in oleic acid are recommended because oleic acid assists in cancer protection, and decreases the risk of heart attacks and arteriosclerosis. These would also be the oils to cook with as they can cook at high heat without turning into trans fats.

• Olive oil (extra virgin or virgin), olives,

• pecans,

• avocados,

• pistachio nuts,

• almonds,

• cashews,

• peanuts,

• hazelnuts,

• sesame oil

• macadamia nuts

coconut oil also have saturated fat as part of their makeup with some benefits, even weight loss that is dependant on the rest of your diet. Even so that limit is still the same as above.

PUFA’s & MUFA’s The rest are your good fatty acids that allow the cells to communicate between each other. These are majority of your fats; roughly 30-35 grams for women and men 45-50 grams in a day. Make sure to have a ratio of 4:1 for omega 6 to 3 and a portion of 9. A lot of times we will have mainly omega 6 and hardly any 3 or 9. It is important to have this balance as an overload on omega 6 can cause health risks too. So, make sure to get in your omega 3’s somewhere in the day, along with cooking with 9’s or adding to salads. Supplements are good if you don’t get enough, but you also need to eat food in its natural state.

This is because of all the other substances in a food that work together to benefit us in a way a supplement cannot.

You will also notice many cross overs between foods that have a combination of the omega’s in them.

Most developed world countries have accepted the chronological age of 65 years as the definition of ‘elderly’ or older person, after all, this is the time when many people expect to retire and start to collect pension benefits. For the individual, however, there is no biological or psychological reason at all to define 65 as “old”. Aging is a continual process that occurs in a unique way for each person. In fact, most people over the age of 65 do not think or act old.

Education can help break down stereotypes about our older population. Becoming a senior does not mean that our memory will fail or our bodies will become physically impaired but rather that it is a time for new opportunities of learning and discovering.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery.

Time To Take A Leap Here it is , Leap year is here.

Were you or someone you know born on February 29th? Do you celebrate on February 28 or March 1?

The people I know that were born on this special day celebrate it on February 28 which only make sense to not have any confusion. I know if I was born on February 29 I would start celebrating on the 25th or 26th right through until March 1 just to make sure I didn’t miss it as it only occurs every 4 years!

Who started the Leap Years and Why? Julius Caesar created this calendar in 45 BC their calendar was 355 days, but being the party guy that Julius Caesar was he thought he should keep the party happening around the same season each year.

I know we think that there are 365 days in a calen-

dar year, but this is not completely true as there are actually 365.2421 (3651/4) days in a calendar year. this is why it is so important that we have the Leap years, we need the extra 24 hours to be sure that the calendar stays inline with the Earth’s movement that it has to do around the Sun. Over the centuries a lot of Leap Day customs, some good some not good.

In some countries women were not allowed to ask a man to marry him unless it was on February 29. This sometimes is also known as Sadie Hawkins Day, or Bachelor’s Day. Later, in Britain it was added that if a man rejected a woman that had proposed to him on this day he would be indebted to her owing her several pairs of gloves, this was possibly to the the fact that she did not get to wear an engagement ring from the man she chose.

Other traditions like in Greek they believe that to get married on February 29th is very bad luck.

As happens every year, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) wants to hear from YOU! The T-4 slips are coming in the mail. Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips, the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

Protect yourself by practicing good hygiene and by keeping vaccinations up to date With five cases of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) being reported in B.C., it’s important to remember the advice that has been recommended by our public health officials. The BC Pharmacy Association’s director of pharmacy practice support Bryce Wong has the following advice for those who want to stay healthy during this time.

“Remember that the most important thing you can do is wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face. This basic action can help prevent getting not just the new coronavirus, but more common infections going around like the cold and flu,” says Wong.

Symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to symptoms of more common respiratory illnesses, such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache, difficulty breathing and pneumonia. While the risk to the general public continues to be declared as low in BC, here are some other tips to help you stay healthy.

Monashee Mews Receiving Funds For New Equipment To Improve Seniors’ Lives And Care

People living and working in long-term care homes throughout B.C. are benefiting from a $6.9-million grant to purchase new equipment that will help improve the safety and quality of life of residents.

“Dignity, comfort, and security are what people and their loved ones expect and deserve when they are in long-term care,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Government is investing in these long-term care homes by adding new and replacement items, like beds and mattresses, and ceiling lifts and sensory rooms, so people can feel comfortable in their surroundings and enjoy their home-like setting.”

The Seniors Safety and Quality Improvement Program (SSQIP) is a three-year program that is managed by the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA).

BCCPA has provided funding to long-term care home operators for the purchase of new equipment.

A total of $10 million was provided over three years to 186 long-term care homes to buy over 8,000 new items: beds and mattresses, shower chairs and tubs, mobility equipment – such as floor and ceiling lifts – lighting and visual aids, sensory rooms, music therapy and ergonomic furniture. The furniture includes specialized chairs and tables.

An advisory group, which included representatives from the provincial government, BCCPA, Denominational Health Association and SafeCare BC, received applications and oversees funding allocation. Those approved received up to $500 per publicly funded bed to purchase equipment that enhances the safety and quality of life of seniors.

“Our government is committed to improving care for seniors,” said Ronna-Rae Leonard, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors. “The new equipment has helped

ensure that their care is provided safely — for the people who live in longterm care, the families who visit them and the staff who care for them.”

Daniel Fontaine, CEO of BCCPA, said, “We’re pleased to continue working with the Ministry of Health and other partners through this final round of SSQIP funding. The investments are aimed at creating more supportive environments for residents in long-term care and reducing injury rates among the workers who care for them.”

Long-term care provides 24-hour professional care and supervision in a protective, supportive environment for people with complex care needs, who can no longer be cared for in their own homes or in an assisted-living residence.

Government is investing more than $1 billion over three years to improve care for seniors, including investments in primary care, home health, long-term care, assisted living and respite services.

The Province is also providing $240 million over three years to increase staffing levels in long-term care homes, with the goal of achieving the target 3.36 direct care hours per resident day – on average – across all health authorities by the end of 2020-21. In 201819, these added more than one million direct hours of care for seniors in long-term care homes throughout the province.

New Service Supports Economic Development in the Rural Areas

The Regional District of North Okanagan is investing in rural areas through a newly established Rural Economic Development Service. The new service is intended to create a more resilient and diverse region by supporting economic development in rural areas.

The funds will mainly be distributed as grants to external organizations that support the goal of economic development, with approximately 30% slated for economic development projects led by the RDNO. The first recipients of this grant are the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club, in order to assist with the 2020 National Cross Country Skiing Championships, and the

Okanagan Film Commission.

“At the heart of a thriving community is a stable economic base that provides opportunities and allows residents to enjoy the beautiful part of the world we live in,” said Amanda Shatzko, RDNO Vice-Chair. “That’s why we are happy to have established this new service to support our rural residents and businesses in the electoral areas.”

All economic sectors will be considered for grants; however, additional points will be awarded to applications that carry out work in the fields of: • Agriculture,
