Join the Monashee Arts Council for our first ever Lumby Paint Party! This will be an afternoon of painting and socializing … and the best part is that you get to keep your amazing work of art. The theme of the painting is “camping under the stars”. You will be guided through the project by Lumby’s very own teaching artist, Loretta West. All supplies for the event will be provided. Happy Belated Valentine’s Day

I hope your sweetheart loves you whole heartily and gifted you with some Dark Chocolate. You may think what yuck, dark chocolate is so bitter! Granted it is bitter but there are many ways to wean one’s self away from milk chocolate to liking dark chocolate.

Let’s look at the benefits first then some ideas on how to flavour it up.

At first glance compared to milk chocolate, dark chocolate may look a bit worse as it is higher in calories and fat and lower in calcium. So what are the benefits of Dark chocolate? When looking purely at calories it is hard to get a good read on any food product as far as the quality and nutrient density goes.

For example if you take a female stage athlete (figure, fitness, bodybuilder) on a 1600 calorie diet compared to the average person on a 1600 calorie diet you will see 2 drastically different physiques. This is because of the type of macronutrients within those calories being eaten. It’s all about nutrient density. You can eat a fast food meal with a beverage and reach 1600 calories or more all in one meal. This meal will be high in sodium, saturated fats and sugar, which only adds to your hip and or waistline as well as negative health consequences. As opposed to eating 1600 calories packed full of nutrient dense foods over 3 main meals plus 2 - 3 snacks throughout the day, which will give your body a whole different physique plus many health benefits over a period of time. Seems like a no brainer!

So back to the dark chocolate which has to be at least 72% or higher to qualify. First of all chocolate comes from cocao, a plant with high levels of minerals and antioxidants called flavonoids. Dark chocolate has large derivatives from this plant whereas milk chocolate contains little. Dark chocolate also has 4x the fiber, less carbohydrates, 1/2 the sugar, 1/4 more iron and the fats it does contain are healthy monounsaturated fatty acids or MUFAs. Monounsaturated fats are healthy fats also found in olive oil, avocados and certain nuts. Evidence and several studies on different chronic conditions show that MUFA’s have a number of health benefits. They can help with weight loss, reduce the risk of heart disease, decrease inflammation, reduce LDL cholesterol and also increase “good” HDL cholesterol. An encouraging study in regards to breast cancer, consisted of 642 women and

1. Melt and dip strawberries in to make chocolate covered strawberries 2. Smear with a natural (no added sugars) nut butter of choice to make a natural healthy peanut butter cup.

3. Melt and dip in raw nuts make your own chocolate covered nuts 4. Shave the chocolate or buy pure cocoa and grind some nuts add some natural sweetener as honey roll into balls over l shredded unsweetened coconut.

Beat Dry Winter Skin As we get older, dry skin can be exceptionally hard to control, especially in the winter.

As we age, skin becomes more fragile due to many factors such as; reduced oil from sebaceous glands, thinning epidermis (outer layer of skin), loosening skin tissues, impaired circulation, loss of hormones and dehydration.

When winter months settle in, heated spaces create a much greater lack of humidity. If you are prone to dry skin, you can do yourself a favour and change up a few routines.

Watch your diet.

Try to make a concentrated effort to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drink lots of water and think about cutting down on coffee and alcohol as they are both diuretics that can cause dehydration and therefore, dry, itchy, skin. Not getting enough healthy fats in a diet can also lead to skin irritation – perhaps add foods like walnuts and avocados to your meal plan.

Many older adults like to exfoliate their skin but using scrubs such as bath sponges too frequently will eventually irritate the epidermis. When drying your face or body, avoid scrubbing; instead, lightly pat.

Change up bathing routines.

The longer you linger in the shower or bath can increase the chances of stripping the outer layer of skin that retains moisture. Limit bathing time to no more than five to ten minutes a day and definitely

Reformed Or Not, ICBC Is Still A Monopoly. Why? Kris Sims, B.C. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Let there be no doubt that British Columbians pay a lot of money for auto insurance. In a province where cost of living is constantly on the mind of the average voter, it’s no surprise that politicians are looking for solutions.

Last week’s announcement by the B.C. government to move to a “no fault” system promises that drivers might see a 20 per cent rate reduction a year from now. While reductions are a positive move, a year is an eternity in politics, and we’ve heard similar promises before.

Further, B.C. drivers have been asking for more choices in auto insurance, not fewer. This week’s announcement to remove a driver’s ability to go to court because of pain and suffering caused by a vehicle crash will give drivers fewer choices.

It’s puzzling why Minister David Eby would tie injured B.C. drivers to ICBC-connected adjusters when just days before he stated: “I don’t think it’s a secret that many British Columbians simply don’t trust ICBC.” Many British Columbians don’t trust ICBC, and that’s why freeing B.C. drivers from the forced ICBC monopoly is the only fair way forward.

B.C. drivers pay the highest auto insurance rates in Canada. We fork over about $1,832 per year to insure our cars and trucks. That’s about 42 per cent more than our neighbours pay in Alberta for the same vehicles and similar coverage. Even a potential 20 per cent reduction a year from now, still leaves British Columbians paying more.

A recent MNP report gave apples-to-apples comparisons of cars, drivers and coverage and the results aren’t good for B.C. drivers.

For example: A 35-year-old woman and her 34-year-old spouse who drive a 2014 Honda Civic to and from work in Vancouver pay about $1,967 per year. Their identical clone couple in Calgary would pay $1,500 per year. A difference of $467 for the same car and the same kind of coverage.

In another example, a 24-year-old woman with two years of driving experience in Kamloops pays $3,194 per year to drive her 2008 Honda Civic to school, while her twin in Medicine Hat pays $2,293; a difference of $801 per year. Drivers in Alberta can shop around for the auto insurance that they want, just as

In B.C., we can shop around and choose our life insurance, home insurance, travel insurance and content insurance, so why are we forced to deal solely with ICBC for auto insurance?

A recent B.C. Liberal Party opinion poll shows that 75 per cent of British Columbians are in favour of “ending the car insurance monopoly for ICBC and allowing customer choice in car insurance.”

British Columbia is a very expensive place to live.

A study found the cost of living in Vancouver is one of the highest in the world, second only to Hong Kong.

Other B.C. regions like Victoria aren’t far behind.

It’s government that is making things worse. Our gas prices are high because of pipeline restrictions and taxes while housing in Metro Vancouver costs more than in Manhattan partly because of onerous regulations. Forcing B.C. drivers to pay the highest auto insurance rates in Canada just adds insult to an already painful injury.

The government has the power to change this. It’s past time that politicians do the right thing: they need to end the ICBC monopoly and give B.C. drivers the ability to shop around and try to save some money.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery.

Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Hitching A Ride These tiny little birds are awesome fly catchers. Flying in the air catching bugs is quite a sight to see. They are very swift , so swift that the bugs don’t even know what happened to them.

There are about 90 different species of these birds which are swallows.

Sometimes when seeing them it is easy to confuse them with Martin’s. Barn Swallows tails are more forked or pointed while Martin’s or other Swallows could be more rounded or blunt.

When we went to Nakusp taking the Needles Ferry to get there these little birds were hitching a ride,

on the front of the ferry, so cute.

They weren’t just hitching a ride, but waiting for their prey.

Out of the different Swallows the Barn Swallow is the most common, they breed in the Northern Hemisphere, and in the winter will vacation in the Southern Hemisphere.

When building a nest which is made out of mud, grass, making pellets then they will line it with feathers. built by both male & female the finished result is a cup shape of about 3” across and about 2” deep. They like building their nests in eaves, rafters of sheds and barns, under bridges, and wharf’s.

When the nest are finally ready the breeding pair can have a clutch size of 3-7 creamy or pinkish white colored eggs that at times are spotted with brown, grey and lavender colors. The eggs are very tiny the length is only about 0.6 - 0.8 inches, while the width is only about 0.5 - 0.6 in. When hatched the young are mostly naked with very sparse pale grey down. their eyes are closed.

Sometimes older siblings from previous clutches will help out at the nest with the young.

Once in awhile a single male will kill the little nestlings, which then causes the nesting pair to break up , so that he can mate with the female.

They like to eat a lot of different kinds of flies and other insects like beetles, butterflies, bees, wasps, and ants catching their prey in mid air. To help them digest their food and get calcium they will eat grit, pebbles, oyster shells and eggshells.

Barn Swallows will not feed at your feeders no matter how much suet or seeds that you supply, but if you place oyster shells or egg shells that have been grounded up and put them out on a flat open platform you might see them in your yard.

You could put up a nesting box before breeding season to attract a breeding pair, but make sure you put some kind of guard on it so that the predators can’t get in and raid the nesting box. There are instructions on the internet on how to build a nesting box in the right size for the Barn Swallows.

During a banding in Maryland a Barn Swallow was recaptured and then released again he was thought to be about 10 years old.

Bantam Stars The Bantam Lumby Stars Sponsored by Bannister GM had three games this past weekend. Their first game was Friday night at Priest Valley against Vernon 1 (Murray). First period was scoreless and then Grady Krause got the stars on the scoreboard half way through the second. Vernon came out in the third and scored 2 goals 4 minutes apart. Stars were down by one and pulled their goalie with 1:45 left in the third and Jace Catt found the back of the net to tie the game 2-2. Outstanding play by every player on the team to battle back and tie the game.

Saturday afternoon the bantam stars were back at the Pat Duke Memorial Arena against Winfield. Kolby English was a force on the ice with 2 goals and an assist. Catt had a beauty goal going from end to end and Colton Young had a sweet chip in from English and Riley Dewhirst. Raye Agema picked up an assist and James Wraight had the win in net. Kiel Hayward played outstanding defense. Stars won 4-2.

Sunday afternoon the bantam stars had Vernon

3 (Rysen) visiting and came up short losing 5-4.

Krause sniped two sweet goals with beauty passing from Teagan Schober and Dewhirst. Young and Noah Rannelli finished up the scoring for the stars with assists going to Catt, Tori Maltman, Jaida Sauvie and Jenna Maltman.

Atom 2 Stars The Lumby Atom 2 Stars sponsored by Sun Valley Landscape Maintenance finished their regular season games this past weekend. They were victorious over Vernon 2 where Lane Moger and Locklyn Quibell both netted hat tricks; Logan Beeswanger, Quinn Church and Jaxsin Macleod scored 2 goals each, while Caydence Quibell pounded home another on a beauty end to end rush. The team’s final season game was against Revelstoke at the Forum; where the team battled hard and ended with a tie game at 4-4. Logan Beeswanger added another hattie to his resume, Quinn Church scored a goal; assists were from Sierra Shaw, Lane Moger, Finley Baines and Lincoln Alger. The Atom 2 Stars finished 3rd out of 12 teams in their division.

Both of the Lumby Atom teams will continue on to the playoffs in the coming weeks. GO STARS GO!

Midget Stars Lopsided. Probably the most charitable description for the Lumby Star’s 9-0 win Saturday in Kamloops Goals and assists were divided between 8 different Lumby players. Goalie Tyra Cunningham and the

defensive corps of Amelia Nagy, Brooklynn Walters, Jordyn Pryor, Mia Maltman and Paige McLaughlin kept the home team off the scoreboard. Great job Ladies! Thanks to Kineshanko Logging.
