Just for Fun Thoughts About Marriage

Marriage is about communication: My wife and I hit an important marriage milestone.

We had a fight entirely in fridge magnets.

It’s about waking up next to the person you love every day: I’ve reached the point in my marriage that my husband fell asleep on the couch and OMG I AM SO EXCITED I GET THE BED ALL TO MYSELF It’s about being willing to negotiate on the important things: [sitting at a table] Wife: writes number on paper and slides it across.

Me: crosses out and writes new number *thermostat negotiations* It’s about being there for each other through thick and thin: Just listed my wife as my emergency contact and added the note “please text, she doesn’t answer calls.”

It’s about knowing when to apologize: Still waiting for my husband to apologize for what he did in my dream last night.

Meet the Artist: We’ve been working in conjunction with the Okanagan Regional Library (Lumby branch) for the past few years on a local art initiative.

The Meet the Artist program is hosted monthly at the library and features MAC members’ artwork in their display area. There is a meet-and-greet event near the end of the show at the library where the public has the opportunity to meet the featured artist and ask questions or watch a demonstration. If you are interested in being one of the artists involved, please give us a shout!

New Online Application For Property Tax Deferment Will Save Time

Starting May 2020, eligible British Columbians can apply online to defer their property taxes.

The online application process is designed to lead to quicker application reviews and, for the first time, allow for automatic renewals.

This new online application is part of the Province’s work to ensure British Columbians can quickly and effectively access the programs and services they rely on.

Prior to the launch of the new system, application reviews could take up to five months, leading to potential late penalties and fees. The new online system will allow homeowners to apply online and opt in for annual renewal. As well, current program users will no longer need to renew annually if they continue to meet

program requirements.

The property tax deferment program provides low-interest loans that allow qualifying B.C. homeowners to defer their property taxes until they sell or transfer ownership of their home. The taxes can be deferred for any year the homeowner lives in the home and meets the criteria for the program.

The eligibility requirements for property tax deferment remain the same.

B.C. municipalities will no longer be responsible for accepting deferment applications. However, municipalities will continue to handle home owner grants and utility payments.

Sumo Wrestler Metabolism VS Marathon Runner or Stage Athlete Last week I talked about how if you eat like a Sumo Wrestler you train your metabolism to slow down.

This week maybe you eat more like a Marathon Runner or a stage athlete (Body builder/ Figure/ Fitness), whose metabolisms are trained to burn at a much higher rate. Oddly enough they both have very little body fat but drastically different physiques. So how do these athletes get the result they want?

Although these 2 groups train quite differently, what they do in the kitchen like the Sumo wrestler determines their outcome. Unlike the Sumo wrestler both these type of athletes eat frequently throughout the day with different macronutrient loads for each meal/snack focusing greatly on what they eat for pre and post workout meals as these are key times for when food can give energy to the athlete (pre workout) to where gains are maximized (post workout). Remember macronutrients are big nutrients our bodies require (Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats – Fiber as a sub nutrient). Although there are different macronutrients eaten in different amounts around meals/snacks, these 2 athletic groups will have with one macronutrient that stands out more than the other. For marathon runners they will mainly have a high carbohydrate focus to their diet, whereas stage athletes will mainly have a high protein focus to their diet. For the marathon runner it is about endurance and not burning out of fuel. For the stage athlete, it is all about their physique and how muscular or toned they look on stage.

As far as metabolism goes the stage athletes rev up their metabolisms by exchanging fat to muscle tissue and growing muscle tissue as

a pound of muscle gained boosts the metabolism to burn at a higher rate (1lb of muscle burns 3x more calories than 1lb pound of fat). Competitive marathon runners burn a big amount of calories clearly due to the amount of energy expended and at what intensity they run at. To give an illustration, see below to understand fat burning a little better.

The Fat Burning Zone Exercise – Primary goal = Lose Fat. 1. Work in the Fat burning zone = low intensity aerobic exercise (walking, jogging, swimming, etc.)

2. The fat burning zone target exercise intensity is a loose approximate of 50-60% of your maximal heart rate or (220 – your age) 3. At low intensity like when sleeping, sitting around, doing literally nothing the body is burning most of its calories from fat...but then why aren’t we all thin?....There is more to the story.

The Real Deal!

1. While exercising at 60% of maximal heart rate (fat burning zone) a. Proportional use of fat is highest at 63% b. Absolute number of calories of fat burned in “fat burning zone”, is actually lower than that achieved at higher intensities percentages (70%, 75%, and 80%) 2. Fact, although while exercising at 80% of maximal heart rate - % of calories being burned from fat stores is the lowest as per the chart below.

But total amount of calories burned = more.

What Does This Mean? EASY! Intensity higher than the “fat burning zone” at same amount of time (30 minutes as per chart below) 225 Kcal From Fat

If you are just looking for general health and wanting to lose weight the same general principles will apply, but not

to the extremes of the athletes above. I have trained athletes that have gone to a national level, won and placed, as well being a competitive figure/fitness athlete myself winning and placing. But most of my clients are just everyday people looking to lose weight and better their health through a plan that works best for them.

Senior’s Programs Researchers recently reported in the Journal of Happiness stating that a person’s joy significantly increases with being in a social circle and focusing on activities you enjoy. Spending time with like-minded people fosters deeper connections to the world around you. The final stretch of winter can prove to be the hardest time of year for some of us, seniors included.

Why not get out and appreciate some socialization, great conversation, activities, programs and meals??

The Senior’s Drop-In (located at 1751 Glencaird Street in the Dogwood Lounge) hosts all of the above, many times a week; Monday Morning Mind & Motion Program is a chair exercise class led by Christina, a certified nurse practitioner. These sessions are full of fun and innovative exercises, geared for seniors and designed to strengthen muscles as well as the mind. Throughout the active morning, there is opportunity to meet one to one with Christina to discuss blood pressure readings, diet, weight and other health related topics.

Wednesday Creative Hands Program is a welcoming chance to share a hobby and handiwork. If you are a local senior that enjoys a table top craft such as knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, sketching, etc. then this is the perfect time to work on your project in a supportive, friendly atmosphere. Perhaps, come and learn a new specialty or teach others about yours.

Gas, Bloating, Cramping? Could be FODMAPs

By Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator If you’re experiencing digestive problems such as gas, abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, you may be consuming something from a group of foods (FODMAPs) containing small carbohydrates (sugars) that are not being adequately broken down in your small intestine. These FODMAP foods then have to move down into your large digestive tract (colon) where they draw water into the colon and bacteria begins to ferment them rapidly.

The combination of water and gas stretches the colon leading to some or all of the above mentioned digestive problems.

Of course, if you have any of the above-listed symptoms, you may have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and should speak with your healthcare provider. Regardless of the cause, following a diet low in FODMAPs may help improve your symptoms. The first step is to keep a food diary, identify any food that might be associated with your symptoms, and if it seems that high FODMAP foods may be at fault, try an elimination diet to determine which food(s) may be causing your digestive problems. A low FODMAPs diet is not a useful diet if you are generally healthy.

High FODMAP foods include: • Vegetables - artichokes, asparagus, avocados, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, green bell peppers, mushrooms, snow peas, raw spinach, radicchio lettuce, corn, garlic, leeks and white onions, and garlic and onion salts or powders.

• Grains - barley, rye or wheat (in large amounts),

Thanks to the reader who requested this article about foods with high amounts of added inulin (fibre); FODMAPs to be printed again, I hope it answered • Legumes – beans and lentils; • Dairy with lactose - cow, goat, sheep, condensed your question. and evaporated milk, ice cream, margarine, yogurt; Cheese - soft and unripened cheese; • Fruits - apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, prunes, plums, blackberries, watermelon, figs, mangoes; • Dried fruits and fruit juice concentrates; • Sweeteners - anything that ends with -itol, (e.g. sorbitol), isomalt, agave, high fructose corn syrup, honey; • Alcohol.

Low FODMAP foods include: • Vegetables – yellow, orange & red bell pepper, bok choy, bean sprouts, butter lettuce, carrots, eggplant, green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, garlic or onion infused oils; • Grains - any gluten-free breads, pasta, rice cakes, potato chips but check the ingredient list for any high FODMAPs such as honey and agave are not present; • Dairy - lactose-free products; Cheese - cheddar, parmesan, swiss, mozzarella • Fruits - ripe bananas, blueberries, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, limes, oranges, raspberries, strawberries, honeydew, passion fruit, kiwi; • Sweeteners - table sugar, maple syrup.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Hooray Here Comes Spring

So last week the results came in, Early Spring! Yippee I can’t wait.

Good old Billy The Badger (Lumby Valley Times Mascot) along with some of the other mascots out there except for in Nova Scotia predicted that we will have an early spring. But unfortunately for Nova Scotia they will have 6 more weeks of this blah winter.

I don’t know about you but I am pretty much done with this winter. I still have a couple of giant of mountains in my back yard. (You remember a couple of weeks ago how I wanted to rent out my backyard to the skiers and snowboarders, well I still can, yup there is still that much snow out there.) I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday that lives up on Trinity Valley Road, oh yeah he still has a ton of snow up there too, and he’s lost a couple of sheds, and other things.

Lots of people getting sick right now too, not just from the snow, but actually getting physically sick. I myself am just getting over a bad bout of Bronchitis, man that just drained me. But it’s almost gone now I hope.

But Spring is just around the corner. Soon the sun and the rains will come to wash away all the snow, but hopefully not to fast as we don’t want any horrible floods.

When the sun starts to come out and the mountains of snow in my backyard as well as everyone’s else’s melt, then guess what happens? Did you get it right? I

bet you did. Yup that’s right, the beautiful spring flowers start popping up everywhere.

I don’t know about you, but when the flowers of many color start to pop up everywhere, a grin comes on my face from ear to ear, as I feel the winter blahs leaving my system.

Then I start checking around to see if there are any new volunteers in my gardens that I had not planted but mysteriously seem to be there. They are always a wonderful welcome sight, I don’t always know what they are, but I am happy to see them anyways.

Then I start checking around the yard to see what damage the heavy snow did to my trees, fence, sheds, etc. I think there will be some damage this year, as the snow has been pretty heavy, and I have already seen some tree limbs broken off on other trees.

Aha, and then of course comes Spring cleaning, packing up the winter clothes , hats, gloves, sweaters, coats, boots, etc. until next year again.

Going through the closets and dressers and see what hasn’t been worn for awhile or that no longer fits, and packing it up and taking it to our great thrift store that we have here.

Ah, Spring, just the thought of you getting here and feeling the warmth of the sun on my face is already making my heart pound with pleasure, and thinking about going for a nice walk without slipping on the ice.

I Can’t wait to see you.

Lets hope Billy and all the other Mascots are right and that we see you soon.

Kingfisher Interpretive Centre Society Endowment Fund Created In Memory of Neil Brookes

The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre Society has established an endowment fund in memory of Neil Brookes.

For over fourty years, Neil was the voice and face of the KICS as Hatchery Manager and Stream to Sea education co-ordinator. Neil believed very strongly in education as a tool for facilitating change and promoting environmental awareness.

Thousands of students benefited from his teachings and the Shuswap/North Okanagan is richer because of his conservation efforts.

“Neil was tireless in his efforts to promote the protection and preservation of wild salmon and the ecological integrity of the Shuswap river watershed.

He asked for nothing in return. His reward was simply to open a mind, change a heart or see the wonder on a child’s face as they witnessed the magic of salmon.

The endowment fund will ensure that Neil’s legacy of environmental stewardship will continue for decades to come.” B DuTot, President KICS Sadly, Neil passed away November 28 2019, and while many mourn his loss, the KICS is committed to carrying the torch the Neil lit so many years ago. The endowment fund will help to ensure that Neil’s legacy of salmon advocacy and environmental stewardship will continue to live on for decades to come.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the recent passing of Linda Jean Wyatt.

Linda married William Wyatt shortly after graduating from City Park Collegiate School.

Soon after they moved to BC, Bill and Linda lived in Malakwa where they had 3 children – Cali, Cathi and Cara.

Linda was incredibly intelligent, strong, witty, sarcastic and could banter like no other. She could always find the answer and was the first to offer a correction in all things spelling or punctuation.

Linda spent her working years at various Newspapers throughout the Okanagan Valley. Linda had a ferocious appetite for reading and was known to have a book and her kindle going all at the same time.

Linda had an unwavering love for her children & grandchildren and was fiercely supportive of all.

Her ability to edit & proofread anything while typing with and accelerated speed while remaining efficient was admirable.

Linda could play the piano beautifully! Her love for music was evident. There was not a Barbara Streisand, Supertramp or Beatles song that was not repeatedly played in the house.

Linda is survived by her children Cali Wyatt and Cathi Wyatt, sisters Terry James and Cathy Posavad, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her daughter Cara Wyatt, her mother Joyce Gross and her father Harold Danbrook).

A celebration of life will be held at the Whitevalley Community Center in Lumby BC on February 23rd, from 1pm-3pm. Linda was not a lover of flowers so please bring your stories and memories to share.
