Over breakfast one morning, a woman said to her husband, ‘I bet you don’t know what day this is?’

‘Of course I do,’ he answered indignantly, as he slammed the door, and drove to his office.

At 11 o’clock, the doorbell rang. The wife answered, and there at her front door was a UPS driver, in his had was a box containing 12 red roses.

Later, at 2 pm there was another knock at the door, this time it was a deluxe box of Belgian chocolates.

Eventually the husband came home, tired after a hard day’s work. His wife greeted him by saying: ‘First the flowers, then the chocolates, I’ve never had a more wonderful Groundhog Day in my life!’

On Groundhog Day, what does it mean if the groundhog comes out and sees the village idiot?

Within 6 weeks you’ll have a village full of idiots.

The Lumby & District Health Services Society has been lobbying Interior Health for a year to grant approval for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Lumby Health Center.

A Nurse Practitioner has a skill set similar to a physician.

Dr. Moa Sugimoto will begin her practice in September. Dr. Don Hunsberger, a locum physician, works two days one week and three days the next week. The Health Society has requested the Locums for Rural BC program continue to grant his services through to the end of August. Their reply is expected soon.

The Health Society requested a meeting with IH officials and on January 29, the LDHSS executive, elected officials, Village of Lumby representatives and other stakeholders met in the Village office. Roger Parsonage, Interior Health Executive Director, Clinical Operations and Yvonne Taylor, Interior Health, Community Administrator North Okanagan attended.

Prior to this meeting they were sent a list of 16 questions submitted by the above-mentioned groups, regarding the status of a Nurse Practitioner for the community.

At the meeting the main message to them was our community is in a health crisis with the lack of easy access to physician services. Our vast geographical service area and health needs of the community far exceed the ability of one lone physician. A NP along with the locum physician would help many residents who do not have easy access to physician services.

The main questions asked were: “Is Lumby going to receive a NP? Will Interior Health fund a NP? When will we get our NP?” The answers were, they could not be definitive with any answers until they submitted their report to their superiors and received a response from them. Rodger reported they had obtained important, pertinent data “last week” which will assist them in putting forward a strong advocacy report for funding a NP for Lumby. They stated they are aware of the lack of medical care and will advocate for a “monetary advance” from IH to fund a NP for Lumby.

The Health Society stated that Lumby’s health needs could support a full time NP in conjunction with Dr. Sugimoto’s arrival in September. They were also informed the Health Society had found a NP who would be happy to work in Lumby if IH is able to do the necessary background work and funding for her.

Rodger Parsonage and Yvonne Taylor committed to ongoing communication to the Health Society regarding the Health Society’s efforts to procure a NP.

ARTBEAT Arts & Culture from the Edge

Meet the Artist We’ve been working in conjunction with the Okanagan Regional Library (Lumby branch) for the past few years on a local art initiative. The Meet the Artist program is hosted monthly at the library and features MAC members’ artwork in their display area. There is a meet-and-greet event near the end of the show at the library where the public has the opportunity to meet the featured artist and ask questions or watch a demonstration. If you are interested in being one of the artists involved, please give us a shout!

Do You Eat Like A Sumo-Wrestler?

What does your diet look like? I have trained and/or developed diet plans for athletes in various sports (such as body building, figure fitness shows, judo, soccer...) and have studied many other sports. Training is obviously a major part of an athlete’s success. The type of food eaten and when, determines how hard the body can train in the form of fuel and what type of physique the body will take shape in. I specialize in weight loss and have many everyday type clients that unknowingly eat in a pattern of a sumo wrestler minus the workout regime and or nutrient dense foods.

So if you are sedentary, wait all day to eat and go to bed shortly after - be careful as you may be training your body to look like a Sumo wrestler!

Sumo wrestlers train their metabolism purposely to slow down, by resting anytime they can and eating all their calories within 2 meals later in the day. The amount of calories and timing of these meals along with the type of calories they eat and drink is all formulated for weight gain. They may look unhealthy but they usually have no major health concerns because of the type of food they eat along with their brutal workout regime most of us couldn’t imagine doing, even if in shape. Sumo-wrestlers start their day at 5:00am, starting with Shiko’s (sumo squats) up to 1,000 reps, numerous piggy back squats (a person sits on their back) and duck walks... to name a few all to the point of exhaustion followed by intense flexibility exercises, body slams and in the ring training.

By the time they are allowed to eat at roughly lunch time they are famished and eat about a 5,000-10,000 calorie meal (depending on their size) followed by a 4 hour nap. Then they wake up and eat another 5,00010,000 calories and back to bed for the night. Their diet consists of Chankonabe, which is a filling stew with vegetables, tofu, cabbage, bean sprouts mixed with seafood, chicken, pork or beef, and seasonings.

To complement this stew they eat around 5–10 bowls of rice and up to 6 pints of beer with the 1st meal for the added empty calories. They drink these empty calories in

too long to eat, not moving, and eating more at night, then going to sleep. In addition calories consumed may not be very nutrient dense leading to more weight gain and accumulation of dangerous visceral fat.

the form of beer because it is low in sugar and is an easy way to get a lot of extra calories in. The alcohol in the beer also slows down fat burning in the body’s metabolism (as explained in a previous corner) and this also contributes to weight gain.

The goal of a Sumo wrestler is to have a high level of subcutaneous fat and a low level of visceral fat.

Subcutaneous fat within a normal range is needed and healthy. It is the jiggly fat just under the skin and has very special functions. This fat is a cover for muscles, is a shock absorbent padding for the body, is an insulating layer to conserve heat and serves as an energy source. Visceral fat is the unhealthy fat that is stored around the organs that cannot be seen and is harder and can protrude to give a pot or beer belly effect. Visceral fat is associated with many chronic diseases, as type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, heart disease and certain cancers. Sumo wrestlers have to be careful once retired. They need to curtail their calorie load and start to lose fat. If not unhealthy visceral fat can quickly accumulate, as they no longer have the restricted workout regime that once supported their size in the way that fat was stored.

Sadly many people eat like a sumo wrestler, obviously not the same amount of calories, but do have the same habits that slow down metabolism; waiting

What If You Don’t Have a Will? If you don’t make a Will, then what happens?

Under the law in most provinces & territories, your nearest relatives are the people who will share in your estate. Without a Will, this can be a lengthy process that may require a lawyer and/or the courts to deal with your belongings.

Who should be named as my Executor? Your Executor (trustee, personal representative or liquidator) is the person named in your Will to be in charge of your property and possessions after your death.

Someone you would trust and feel comfortable in carrying out your final wishes. Discuss it with them and ask their permission to act as your Executor then make sure the Executor will have knowledge of where it is stored.

It also helps to express your wishes with your family beforehand and share with them who the Executor is and where the Will is stored. Try to review your Will at least every five years or when there is a change in the family. This includes if you marry, as your old Will becomes invalid in this event. Reviewing your Will also ensures your wishes haven’t changed.

You can also opt to pre-plan your funeral or even pre-pay the funeral costs. Pre-planning can be as simple as telling your family and friends your wishes

or having the information already stored at a funeral home or memorial society of your choice to help guide the family and Executor.

You do not need to get legal advice but because a Will and other estate planning forms are considered legal documents, it may be a good idea to have your Will prepared by a lawyer or a notary public.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a collaboration between community organizations and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Community organizations, their volunteers, and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have been working together for over 40 years to help eligible individuals with modest income and a simple tax situation prepare their income tax and benefit returns for free at tax preparation clinics. Last year, over 2,000 organizations and their 16,000 volunteers supported the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). Wii is Whee!

Have you ever played a Wii game (it is pronounced as it sounds: we) Well it’s not to late to try it. It is a lot of fun. Wii is a great interactive video game that came out in 2006 brought out by Nintendo. They don’t just have games that you can play, but also exercise programs as well. There is dance videos, boxing, and other sports they also have Yoga Videos. All of this is done in the comfort of your own home.

You don’t sit on your couch playing games or just watching Yoga, nope you actually get off your couch and do the actions that they are showing you. It is a blast. We have had this fun game about 2 years. We do a variety of things with it. In 2019 Nintendo dropped the Wii game and brought out the Wii U it was okay, but not as much fun as the original.

You can still buy the Wii console and different games online or at second hand stores or pawn shops.

When playing the games or the fit videos you can play by yourself, with a friend or a group of people of up to 4 people. For the Yoga, and a couple of other

More Help For BC Farmers When They Need It Most

The B.C. government is increasing funding available to farmers in crisis.

“When disaster strikes, farmers can’t afford to wait for help,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture.

“Whether it be wildfires, army worms, devastating

weather conditions for grain or extreme market-price fluctuations, we are making changes to better help farmers when they most need it.”

New funding for the B.C. AgriStability Enhancement Program means that up to an additional $9 million is available for qualifying farmers over the next two years.

AgriStability is a national program providing protection to Canadian agricultural producers against large declines that threaten the viability of their farms and are beyond their capacity to

manage. The B.C. AgriStability Enhancement Program is available to B.C. farmers who were enrolled in 2019 and those who enrol in 2020.

“We are increasing the compensation rate from 70% to 80%, which means that every payment in 2019 and 2020 from AgriStability will be increased by 14.3%,” Popham said. “Currently, farms with the widest margins receive the least support. We are eliminating the reference margin limit and that will address this problem.”

B.C. farmers already participating in AgriStability will automatically receive the increased protection.

Those who are not participating can still enrol for 2020. There are no additional enrolment requirements beyond what is normally required to participate.

The changes announced on Jan. 30, 2020, will complement B.C.’s ongoing work with the federal, provincial and territorial partners to improve AgriStability nationally. The next meeting is in Ontario in the summer.

Quick Facts: The B.C. AgriStability Enhancement Program: • eliminates reference margin limits, thereby increasing support; and • increases the compensation paid from 70% to 80% when margins fall below the 30% payment threshold.
