SNOWMOBILE FUN!

The Lumby & Mable Lake Snowmobile Association held their 4th Annual Family Day on Sunday, January 26th.

This was also the association’s 20th Anniversary.

There were snowmobile rides for the kids and displays by the Vernon Search and Rescue and also Avalanche Canada.

Everyone had some fun and enjoyed a great day for some riding! Thanks for hosting this!

I know that I have sometimes had spelling mistakes or odd headlines, here are a few from other newspapers showing that I am not alone.

• Cows lose their jobs as milk prices drop It’s always heartbreaking when a cow can’t bring in a steady income—but we’re guessing that’s not quite what the editors behind this unintentionally funny newspaper headline from The Baltimore Sun had in mind.

• State population to double by 2040, babies to blame Is it too late to stop this nefarious plot by babies? They may be small, but they’re sneaky.

• Breathing oxygen linked to staying alive A groundbreaking discovery brought to you by the same scientific minds who discovered the link between walking and leaving the house.

• Most Earthquake Damage is Caused by Shaking Well, that’s weird, we thought most of the damage was caused by hurtful sarcasm. You know how mean-spirited earthquakes can be.

Sitting Is The New Smoking - Part 2

Last week I pointed out how sitting is the new smoking and by just getting up every 30 minutes could save your life or at least your longevity. But why is it so bad for us? I provided lots of information why it’s bad, what it can cause, and things we can do to combat it, but I want to explain what actually happens to our bodies. First of all the way our bodies are structured we are built to move and stand upright. The heart, cardiovascular system, digestive system and brain all function best with more standing and periodic movement.

Heart and Cardiovascular System You may not realize that the heart can’t do everything by itself it needs help in many different ways.

To name a few, it is a muscle so we have to treat it like any other muscle and work it to keep it healthy, strong and functioning, also it needs help getting blood back to the heart from our legs. The legs have veins that include small valves which open and shut to push blood up our legs. When you get up your leg muscles are squeezed and in combination of blood pressure from the hearts pump, the blood moves up the legs against gravity. If these valves get lazy or malfunction, blood falls back down and blood starts to pool in the veins.

This is how varicose veins are developed but worse DVT deep vein thrombosis can happen causing clotting = blood clots. Also these very important big muscle groups of the lower body in your legs and butt (glutes) will start to waist away putting stabilization at risk making it more likely you will have a higher likelihood for injury from falls or strains/sprains. Other

areas that can have problems are your hips and back as your hip flexor muscles shorten, putting stress on your hip joints and if you do not sit with prefect posture then chronic back aches or worse yet, compression in the discs of your spine causing a lot of pain and premature degeneration.

Digestive system Moving your muscles helps your body digest fats and sugars that you eat, as well as food passing through the digestive/gastrointestinal tract with more efficiency to help allow for regular bowel movements and other important tasks to do with hormones and nutrients.

When digestion is compromised these fats and sugars retain in your body and insulin effectiveness drops by 24% in just 24 hours. These above factors also could be the correlation with certain cancers as there are so many crucial functions that are involved in these systems that literally make us live.

Brain As for anxiety and depression the links are not definitive to why there is an impact but it is well known that people who are very sedentary, feel good neurotransmitters (endorphins, dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin) are not being released as when exercising.

Blood Pressure And Heart Health Blood pressure is an important part of heart health.

“A person’s blood pressure is one of the easiest and simplest measurements and can tell much about your current and possible future health,” says Dr. Randall Zusman, director of the division of hypertension for Harvard-affiliated General Hospitals. The recommendation if you’re taking your blood pressure at home is to measure it a few times a week and see your doctor if you notice any significant changes.

The heart has a never-ending workload; it beats 2.5 billion times over the average lifetime. It pumps blood, carries oxygen, hormones and a host of essential cells. This also includes whisking away waste products. Although many people develop some form

of heart issues (cardiovascular disease) as they get older, it doesn’t have to be inevitable. It is crucial that we pay attention to our heart, starting with monitoring our blood pressure. Lifestyle changes and medications can improve your heart from harmful trends like high blood pressure or high cholesterol. As noted earlier in the article; consider a healthy diet, limit your intake of alcohol and salt, reduce your stress and quit smoking.

CFNO Launches Rural Northern Immigration Pilot RNIP project helps Okanagan attract—and keep—talented international workers

In just a few weeks, local employers will be able to post jobs that could help bring up to 100 skilled foreign workers to the North Okanagan every year until 2022— bolstering the economy and helping employers overcome a looming skilled labour shortage that can’t be filled solely by residents.

Vernon is one of two communities in BC and one of 11 in Canada selected to participate in the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP), which aims to help smaller communities benefit from the immigration of skilled workers by creating a path to permanent residence. RNIP Vernon will see Community Futures North Okanagan (CFNO) endorse qualifying job postings and support the local committee that recommends the applications of eligible skilled international workers.

“Our region is extremely fortunate to have been selected to participate in this project,” says Leigha Horsfield, General Manager, CFNO. “The opportunities it presents to enhance and fill gaps in our workforce needs is exceptional. One of the many outcomes we’d like to see is the promotion of the North Okanagan as a destination of choice for skilled immigrants and their families.”

The pilot is scheduled to begin in Vernon Feb.

1 and this week CFNO begins hosting ongoing RNIP training sessions for employers, who must meet several eligibility requirements, including being within a 40-kilometre radius (except for Kelowna), already having at least three full-time employees, and being able to pay a living wage of at least $25/hr for a full-time permanent position. As of Feb. 1, employers can post a position on the new RNIP Vernon website, which goes live today for information, and employers will also be required to post the job locally so current residents can apply.

On Feb. 3, RNIP candidates will be able to create a profile on the RNIP Vernon site and can then apply for postings. To be considered eligible, candidates must meet federal permanent residency criteria as well as language benchmarks, and intend to live in the community. Once there’s a match between qualified employers and applicants, a CFNO committee reviews applications monthly and can recommend up to 100 applicants per year.

New Residential Options Proposed For Agricultural Land

The Province is proposing more residential flexibility for people living in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) as outlined in a new policy intentions paper released Jan. 27, 2020, by the Ministry of Agriculture.

In order to support farmers and non-farmers living in the ALR, government is considering regulatory changes to enable landowners to have both a principal residence and a small secondary residence on their property, provided they have approval from their local government. ALR property owners would not be required to apply to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) for approval.

“We are continuing to do the work necessary to help farmers farm and protect farmland for future generations,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “The ALR is B.C.’s best food-producing land, and is just 5% of our province’s land base – it’s so important for food security. The proposed changes, if implemented, would provide additional residential flexibility in the ALR. Publicly sharing this proposed policy direction now gives those interested an opportunity to review and comment, leading to better outcomes. We recognize that rules by the previous government do not reflect the needs of British Columbians and as a result, we are proposing to allow more flexibility for small secondary residences. Under the proposal, a small secondary residence would be available for farm-workers, family members or anyone else,

by Rosalee de la Foret: Place 20-30g of Astragalus root, 1 1 tbsp dried orange peel, 2 tsp minced fresh or dried ginger, ½ tbsp cinnamon bark or chips, ½ tsp whole peppercorns, 1-2 cardamom pods, two whole clove and 2 ½ cups of water in slow cooker.

Let it simmer overnight covered at low heat, adding water if needed. Strain, add milk and honey as desired. Drink within 36 hours. Cautions: do not use Astragalus during acute illnesses, or combine with immunosuppressive drugs.

New ICBC Collision, Glass Repair Programs To Save Costs, Improve Accountability

ICBC and industry partners have worked together to redesign collision and glass repair programs to generate savings for ICBC and promote high-performing shops to serve drivers better.

Once fully implemented, repair shops will be ranked by performance based on various metrics. The ranking will be placed on a shop-locator ICBC webpage, enabling drivers to make informed choices about where to take their vehicles for repair, while encouraging shops to be top performers.

“After consulting with industry leaders, the redesign of the collision and glass repair programs will improve transparency and accountability of repair shops for drivers who get into accidents and need to choose which repair shop they go to,” said David Eby, Attorney General. “By publicly ranking the repair shops by performance, where repair shops strive to be the top performers, we expect that this will help curb some of the rising claims costs and pressures that ICBC is facing.”

The new collision program will take effect Feb. 3, 2020, and the new glass program will take effect March 2, 2020. Combined, both programs will encompass approximately 1,000 collision and glass repair shops throughout the province. However, the repair shop ranking will be made available only after significant data is collected.

“ICBC appreciates the repair industry’s willingness to work with us to manage performance effectively, and we will continue to consult with our industry advisory committee and technical working group to continuously improve the new programs over time,”

said Nicolas Jimenez, CEO, ICBC. The changes to the glass and collision repair programs come after government launched an operational audit of ICBC, which resulted in recommendations on ways to improve management of material damage vendors.

Quick Facts: • The redesigned programs were developed after more than a year of consultation with industry, including 33 sessions with collision shops and 31 sessions with glass repair shops throughout the province.

• Savings will come from improved performance and enhanced governance that drives higher efficiencies via faster processing of claims, faster repair cycle times and greater autonomy for high-performing suppliers.

• The new programs are another initiative of government to improve the financial sustainability of ICBC, in addition to improvements to road safety, high-friction pavement and limits to minor injury payments.

Victor Ralph Levi January 28, 1931 – January 7, 2020

We regret to announce the passing of Victor Ralph Levi, born January 28, 1931 in Vernon, BC, died January 7, 2020 in Lumby, BC. He was a certified journeyman mechanic and diesel mechanic, and an uncertified designer, builder, mechanic of aircraft. He was a multi-talented man, witnessed by many projects from motorized trike to building and modifying aircraft.

“There is no music as sweet as the sound of a welltuned engine,” but sweeter still was the sound of his whistling of long-forgotten tunes while he fed the cows.

He is survived by his loving wife Victoria, to whom he was married October 19, 1957, his pride and joy descendants who have inherited his talents and are his legacy; children Lorena (Dwight), Guy (Jenn), Joel (Elise), and Ben (Lori), grandchildren Melissa, Jessica, Jenna, Alexis and Matt and their partners, his many great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step greatgrandchildren, half-brother Richard and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his father Tony, his mother Berneice, his step-father Andy and his sisters Marlene, Elsie and Betty. There will be no services. We wish to thank everyone concerned with his medical care and the staff at Polson Extended Care and Monashee Mews for their care, teasing and laughter.

His spirit is now free to fly with the eagles, so when you see an eagle flying overhead, side slipping . . .
