Just for Fun Don’t Step on the Ducks Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven: When they get there, St. Peter says. “We only have one rule here in heaven, don’t step on the ducks!”

So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck and although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one.

Well, along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says. “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly man!”

The next day, the second woman steps accidentally on a duck and along comes St. Peter, who doesn’t miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment as for the first woman.

The third woman has observed all this and not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very careful where she steps.

She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks.

And then one day St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on - Very tall, long eyelashes and muscular.

St. Peter chains them together without saying a word.

The happy woman says. “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?”

The guy says. “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck!”

Re: Unsatisfactory Road Cleaning To the Editor: Wow! How nice to see that full colour front page of the Jan. 17th Lumby Valley Times with a huge THANK YOU to the Village of Lumby crews.

I haven’t heard hardly any complaints about road mtce. because most of us know the conditions this year are like nothing we’ve seen before.

The snow just won’t quit, giving the road crews a week or two to clean up. It snows most every day and it’s hard for homeowners to keep their own driveway cleared! And the mountains of snow that has to be trucked somewhere. Thanks for the positive words, Andrew.

Whether it’s our village, a city or highways, it’s impossible to make our roads the way we would like. I was up on Saddleview Ave. last week and my car got stranded over deep snow as a crew

was working on snow removal. A large machine (skidder with blade?) and 3 strong fellows, along with a shovel got me on my way. Thanks, guys.

Regarding Ken Caldwell’s very negative comments about the new highways crews. It’s been noted they had to clear roads and trails for B.C. Hydro to restore power. The snow hasn’t stopped for them either and they have countless roads to maintain. Shuswap River Dr. being narrow - well, the streets up above Lumby last week were also narrow and barely room for two cars to pass. Vernon streets are the same along with being glare ice on main streets.

By the way EMCON was replaced years ago

by JPW. I lived on Shuswap River Dr. for 25 years and there was a few times the road became narrow. One of the worst years, there were also logging trucks hauling out of there - now that was scary! And that hill coming up off Mabel Lake Rd. was quite often nerve wracking if you didn’t have good winter tires and a 4 x 4 vehicle. Nothing new there.

Sitting Dangers

What can 30 seconds every 30 minutes do for your health?

Did you know that sitting is the new smoking and now causes as many deaths? It can bear some of the same chronic diseases as well as others; heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol, obesity or weight gain, varicose veins, blood clots, certain cancers as endometrial or lung cancer, dementia, depression and for older women higher chance of breast cancer and weak bones. An interesting and very important note is that sitting more than 4 hours a day can cause these undesirable affects regardless of your level of activity! Keep working out! I am not telling you to give up your workouts by no means, as this adds to your prevention of getting all these diseases and other huge benefits which I will touch on in another corner. So don’t fret as there are many easy ways to combat this in your everyday life. Health Canada has made recommendations with regards to smoking and now for prolonged sitting. Individuals are encouraged to get up more often with every half hour being optimal and for employers to follow suit with their employees as there are benefits to their bottom line.

According to “getcanadastanding.org” 70% of sedentary behaviour takes place at work. By Employers taking action there is a correlation with cost savings to the business as productivity increases, absenteeism is reduced, engagement increases and staffs well-being are improved.

People feel better after a combination of sitting and standing and it has been shown that those who sit for 1 or 2 hours at a time without moving have a higher risk of early death than their peers who sit just as long but are getting up for short bouts of movement. Here are a few interesting stats below to support this: People are: • 87% more comfortable • 76% more energized • 75% healthier • 62% happier • 10-30% more productive • Burning an extra 50 calories more than when sitting per hour.

There are many ways employers can make the workspace more sit free, by providing sit stand desks, desk mounts or risers, sit stand chairs or stool, balance boards, treadmill desk, ....There are also many less expensive

than 30 minutes but you are not doing other activities as sweeping or dusting.

The main important point is: Do not sit for prolonged periods of time, to help ensure your longevity!

Here are some ways to achieve this: 1. 1. Set an alarm every 30 minutes – move for 30 seconds (whether at home or at work) during an 8 hour work day = 8 minutes a. Stretch - touch toes – reach to the ceiling.... b. March on the spot c. Do chair squats d. Go to coffee station and get some water or coffee e. Desk push-ups 2. Go for a 30 minute walk either on your lunch break, before starting your day or at end of your day.

3. While watching TV get up at commercials or at a pause or lull in movie or program. If watching for 2 hours you could get 2 minutes here.

4. Do chores, stand while folding laundry, and almost all cleaning like sweeping, dusting...requires you to move and not sit you could get 10 minutes or more. Also when preparing dinner and cleaning up afterwards you will most likely be standing for 30 minutes at least or more (loading dishwasher or doing dishes, cooking....

So if you total all these minutes in red = you are easily over 71 minutes. These may differ and you may be prepping dinner longer so you are standing/moving more

Winter Safety for Seniors During the winter months, frigid temperatures, snow and ice can make life much more challenging for anyone, especially seniors. Driving, even walking, can suddenly become potentially hazardous. Being prepared can assist in preventing common cold weather issues.

Make sure to wear footwear with good traction and nonskid soles. Ice cleats fit nicely on almost any shape and size of boot and are generally available at most pharmacies, department stores and on-line shopping sites. Retractable grips can also be fitted over a cane or walking aid. Remember to take off outdoor footwear as soon as you return indoors because snow and ice attach to the soles and, once melted, can lead to slippery conditions inside.

When heading out into the brisk weather, remember to dress in warm layers and to factor in the wind chill temperature if planning to be out for an extended time. As wind increases, a person cools at a faster rate and a body temperature should not drop below 95 degrees.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Too Much Snow Ugh! Do you know where the place in this picture is?

Well if you guessed my back yard you are correct.

I feel like saying “help my backyard fell under a whole whack of snow and it can’t get out! This time there is no LOL to follow.

This is how people get “Cabin Fever” also called “ Stir Crazy” and yes it is a real thing. It can occur when confined to the indoors for any length of time.

You might or might not have some symptoms like being Restless, being Lethargic, having Sadness and or Depression, Trouble Concentrating on different things, Irritable, Craving Food, Less Motivation, Isolated from social groups, Hard to wake up in the morning, taking a lot of naps during the day, a change in your weight, etc. these symptoms may not be just “Cabin Fever” if they continue for any length of time, please see a professional person to help you with this.

This winter has been overwhelming. I am just glad we don’t live in Newfoundland, those poor people out there, yikes!

So last week when the weather was cold, but not to cold everything in my car worked fine (of course it did) wait a minute this is not completely true as my wipers decided not to work, they would turn on, but then when I shut them off they wouldn’t go back to

their holder, so there they sat on the middle of my windshield until I would turn them on again.

The next day it got extremely cold, so guess what happened to my car?

Yup! If you guessed that my car heater and the fan no longer works, then you guessed right. And of course this is when I have to drive back and forth to Vernon for appointments ( good thing they are not in Kelowna or further).

It is weird that the heater or fan is not working, but yet the heated seats are still working, which is a good thing so we are not entirely frozen in my car as we drive back and forth to Vernon or other places. Oh yeah the radio still works too.

And even weirder the wipers are working again.

So, you say the weather is starting to warm up a bit for this week that is good, but it is not going to be enough to get rid off the snow in my backyard. Maybe I should rent it out as a small ski or snowboard hill (now here comes the LOL) before it gets too cold again soon.

A couple of my friends are pretty lucky right now they went Mexico for a couple of months. They should be back in time for No More Snow!

Years ago a friend of mine that used to drive a transport truck in this area (he now lives in Nova Scotia) told me one day, that where he traveled to he saw a

lot of snow, but he said and I quote “ that Lumby got more snow that the other places he had been to , but the place I lived in got the most snow he had ever seen.”

If he was to see my backyard now he would give me a sly smile, and say “wow I was right your place gets the most snow I have ever seen”! And he would be right.

I am surrounded by mountains, one large in the front of my place, one large at the back, and about 4 smaller ones in my yard.

I can’t wait for Spring, just so I can find my yard again, when that happens I think I will sit out on my swing and just welcome Spring, and maybe give it a little heck for taking so long to get here.

Applications open for BC Parks Student Ranger Program

Young adults keen to work outdoors this summer and to acquire a diverse range of job skills can now apply for the BC Parks Student Ranger Program.

Now in its third season, the Student Ranger Program provides 48 young adults with training and employment opportunities in B.C.’s parks and protected areas. Indigenous students are encouraged to apply as the program has a 30% Indigenous hiring target.

“Our government is committed to providing opportunities that encourage young people to play a key role in environmental stewardship,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “The meaningful work completed by student rangers during the last two years has a lasting impact on our parks and protected areas, and I hope it inspires more young people to consider a rewarding career looking after our spectacular natural spaces.”

Funded by the federal and provincial governments, the Student Ranger Program offers hands-on work experience through a variety of projects related to conservation, recreation, community outreach and Indigenous relations. Twelve crews made up of four student rangers will be located throughout the province, focusing on initiatives such as ecosystem restoration, invasive species control and outdoor education, as well as trail building and maintenance.

“Working outdoors all summer as a student ranger, I gained a deeper appreciation for our parks and protected areas, and realized how important they are

to everyone,” said Eva Gribbon, who led the 2019 student ranger crew based out of Goldstream Park.

“I travelled to more than a dozen parks and protected areas, engaging with the public, removing invasive species and rehabilitating trails. The experience strengthened my skills in project management, problem solving, conflict resolution, cultural humility and leadership, and I am deeply appreciative for the opportunity to participate in the program.”

The ‘Helper’s High’: Why Volunteering Makes You Happy

Common wisdom tells us that by giving, or giving our time, we receive something in return — tangible or otherwise. True to this principle, very often volunteers affirm that volunteering makes them feel happy. This positive effect of volunteering has been called the “helper’s high.”

But what causes this feeling? The field of positive psychology provides a compelling explanation with their research on happiness. Martin Seligman, the field’s leading figure and past president of the American Psychological

Association, maintains that there are three types of happiness, or rather three kinds of happy lives: • Pleasant life or life of enjoyment • Good life or life of engagement • Meaningful life or life of affiliation Seligman outlines these modes of happy living in his books Authentic Happiness (2002) and Flourish (2011).

The first mode of living involves the pursuit of pleasure and affords us only transient happiness. The second involves engagement in tasks in which we feel adept and is a source of durable happiness. The last involves participation in something larger or more permanent than ourselves and is also a source of durable happiness.

It’s the third type of happiness in Seligman’s model, that which derives from a “meaningful” mode of living, that is relevant to volunteering. For Seligman, this happiness stems from a sense of belonging, meaning and purpose. According to both a large body of research and volunteers themselves, volunteering frequently generates these very effects.

Volunteers obtain a sense of belonging from engaging with their community and expanding their social network, and a sense of meaning and purpose from their perception that they’re making a positive difference.

Hence the sense of happiness, or this “helper’s high,” that so many volunteers report feeling.

Bantam Lumby Stars Bantam Lumby Stars sponsored by Bannister GM started this past weekend with a late night Friday game at the South Okanagan Minor Hockey tournament facing a team from States and sent the Spokane Jr. Chiefs back across the border with a huge 6-0 win!

Grady Krause and Tori Maltman each supplied 2 goals, while Colton Young and Noah Rannelli each snipe one.

Jace Catt earned two assists and Jenna Maltman, Kiel Hayward and Riley Dewhirst each picked up an assist.

James Wraight had the shutout between the pipes.

Game two was against the home town South Okanagan which the Stars tied 1-1. Dewhirst went end to end and got the lone goal of the game. Great defense

The Flyers were the first to get on the score board half way through the first period and Jace Catt tied it up with 15 seconds in the first with a nice pass from our goal tender James Wraight. No scoring in the second and the Tori Maltman went end to end to snipe one past their goal over his right shoulder. Jace Catt got another goal with a scramble in front of the net and Noah Rannelli finished the scoring with assists going to T Maltman and Jaida Sauvie. Wraight got the win in net.
