This new company is trying to do our roads on a shoestring. We live on Shuswap River Drive off Mable Lake Rd. For years I have plowed the beginning of the road knowing that the main roads must be cleared first. My neighbours many times have diffi-

culty otherwise starting up from Mable Lake Rd. This year it has been much worse. The road so narrow it is dangerous when 2 vehicles meet. We pay taxes for 1 main benefit, road maintenance. The other parts are only a small portion.

Please get EMCON back or give the new company a reason to improve there services dramatically.

The Monashee Arts Council will be holding a Winter Dance Party on Saturday, February 1, 2020 (710pm) at the White Valley Community Centre! There is a meet-and-greet event near the end of the show at the library where the public has the opportunity to meet the featured artist and ask questions or watch a demonstration. Four Great Ways To Give Back To Your Community

Looking for a way to give back to your community?

Here are five charitable or neighbourly deeds you can perform on an ongoing basis.

1. Share your cooking. When cooking for yourself, make extra portions to offer to a homeless person or a low-income family in your neighbourhood. Or, alternatively, when getting take-out buy an extra portion to give to them.

2. Organize a neighbourhood cleanup. Share your love for the environment with your friends and neighbours. Gather a group of four or five people to pick up litter in you area. Make an event of it by finishing with a barbeque or potluck.

3. Collect food bank items. Set out a bin at your workplace that you and your coworkers can fill with non-perishable food items for the poor. Bring the donations to a food bank in your area every week or two.

4. Decorate for someone else. Do a bit of holiday decorating for an elderly person who lives alone, is sick or has reduced mobility. For instance, something as simple as balloons or flowers can set the stage for Valentine’s Day or Easter.

While working with a charity is a great thing to do, so is volunteering to help out in smaller but equally meaningful ways within your community.

Cold Air Tips

Mikkie Nettles,Certified Personal Trainer/Holistic & Sports Nutritionist So with winter upon us and now a cold snap, I thought this week’s corner should focus on exercising in the cold. You may hear of people suffering from heart attacks, particularly when shoveling snow. If you have underlying conditions, are sedentary, or are elderly it is extremely important to keep warm and not push yourself in the cold weather. The reason for this is a drop in temperature concentrates blood flow in the body’s core, which increases blood pressure - placing more strain on the heart. In the cold the body is already working harder to generate more heat. When you combine that with physical exertion those who are susceptible are at a great risk. Also since blood flow is concentrated in the body’s core we can’t forget about our outer extremities as frostbite can be a risk factor as well.

In -15 C with no windchill the risk of frostbite is less than 5% but add windchill and the risk goes up.

Frostbite in windchills near -25 C can occur in 15 minutes or less. Make sure to cover up head, hands, feet and face properly as these are the areas most likely to be affected by frostbite. These might seem obvious but sometimes overseen. Another area to take precaution is your mouth and neck, which should be covered loosely with a scarf, especially in the area of

your mouth. If you breathe in cold air vigorously or for a period of time it can cause the airways to spasm which will lead to some unpleasant symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness and even exercise induced asthma, even if you don’t normally suffer from asthma.

Take extra measures in the extreme cold. Being prepared and dressing in layers if you do have to go outside should look as follows: Your inner layer should be a material like polyester, spandex, wool... that can wick sweat away moisture from the body. Moisture is the enemy on a cold day whether from rain, snow or perspiration. Evaporation is a cooling process and if you are wet and not dressed properly that cooling process is happening right on your skin.

Your second layer should be insulating, like sweaters, fleece, and sweatshirts. They can be snug but not too tight, this will keep you warm as a thin area of air between you and the material, will allow your body heat to warm up that space.

Your last layer should be water and wind-proof, if those are the elements happening outside. They are usually made from synthetic materials that repel water and wind indicated on the label. If there is rain, snow or wind it is very important to protect your insulating layer.

With gloves and shoes, think the same way. Consider wearing footwear that is a half size larger to be able to wear thicker insulated socks.

To finalize when it snows, take care. Dress as above and when shoveling PUSH rather than LIFT the snow. Better yet buy a snow blower or hire someone to do it for you, there are many school kids eager for extra money.

On January 24th and 25th there will be another drive up service in town.

BC Breast Cancer Screening will be bringing their state of the art, mobile mammography unit to Lumby and will be parking in the Sheardown’s lot for two full days.

The first piloted mobile mammography service began in British Columbia nearly thirty years ago, in 1990. Nowadays, this essential travelling service visits more than 170 rural communities across our province.

Since its conception, the mobile units have converted from film to digital. This conversion allows for greater efficiency in sharing images and being able to do this in a timely fashion. Technologists are now

able to see images right away, which instantly ensures image quality.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, no matter a person’s race or ethnicity. It can sometimes take up to three years for any breast abnormalities to be felt so mammograms are absolutely the best tests that physicians have to find breast issues.

Mammograms are recommended for women aged 40 – 74 and there is no referral required if you are over 40. Women can make an informed decision to screen by visiting www.screeningbc.ca/breast or by speaking to your health care provider.

Herbs For Older Men

By: Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., H.Ed. It seems daily we see a new herb or supplement advertised for older women. Menopause has become a “cashcow” for the pharmaceutical and supplement industries.

But, what of older men? There’s little “buzz” around the areas of health-related supplements for ageing men.

For both men and women, it’s usually better to get your nutrients from food. However, after 50, your body may need more of some vitamins and minerals from foods or supplements. These include Calcium; Vitamins D and B12.

Listed below are some of my favourite herbs of specific interest to men as they age. These are supported by solid scientific, clinical and historical evidence: Ashwagandha root, a tonic herb to support the body’s overall well-being, and an adaptogen used traditionally to support the emotional aspects of the heart, including grieving. Ashwagandha is one of the most popular herbs to nourish and restore nervous and immune system health. It helps normalize sleep and improve reactions to stress. There are no known precautions or contraindications to this herb. It’s effects usually take about 1-3 months to become apparent.

Extracts have been well-researched for supporting many different aspects of heart function and cardiovascular system health. The fruit in capsules, teas, infusions, decoctions and tinctures are all used. Though well-tolerated and safe as recommended, it is always best to consult with your health care provider before taking any cardiotonic herb.

Maca, a cruciferous vegetable related to turnips and radishes, is found naturally in the Andes mountains of Peru. Maca supports a healthy libido and promotes energy and stamina. It does not increase testosterone or affect mood. Because it is a food, the powder (1 tsp daily is sufficient) makes an easy addition to juice, oatmeal and smoothies, but can also purchased in capsules. Generally

Stinging Nettle leaf and root, probably my favourite herb. Not only does it grow freely locally, it is a fabulous food and tonic. The leaves support a healthy inflammatory response and contain histamine, making them a useful antiallergic. I use Nettle tea when faced with allergies, fatigue or iron-deficient anemia. For bone health, 100g of dried nettle leaf packs a whopping 2900 mg of highly absorbable calcium. It’s also high in magnesium. The roots are used for men’s health to support healthy function of the prostate gland. In some people, Cautions: Nettle acts as a strong diuretic, and it is a drying herb-use with caution if your constitution is dry.

Saw Palmetto is native to the southeast U.S.; its berries used medicinally. Saw Palmetto has long been recommended to support healthy prostate function associated with the natural processes of ageing. Clinical trials have demonstrated its usefulness in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH.) This herb is not for adolescents because of possible hormonal effects - treatment of acne under the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner may be an exception.

Reishi Mushroom, known in China and Japan as the “mushroom of immortality.” In addition to immune, liver and blood sugar support, Reishi is noted for prostate support, improving urinary symptoms in men with BPH. Generally safe, but caution advised in people with immune dysfunction, autoimmune disorders and those taking immunosuppressive medications.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom, a white, globe-shaped fungi with long, shaggy spines. Research has focused mainly on supplements. Results suggest that Lion’s Mane may offer a range of health benefits, including supporting healthy fat metabolism, reduced inflammation and improved cognitive function.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Pretty But Can Be Dangerous: This time of year you see them hanging every where.

These icicles were hanging off my arbor. As you know icicles can occur anywhere. If they are on your roof, or your gutters it is probably not a good idea to knock them down as they are more than likely attached to your shingles, so you are actually knocking off your shingles, or gutters not the icicles!

I love taking pictures of them they look so beautiful and elegant, but don’t be deceived on how they look as they can be quite dangerous to a person, or even a vehicle.

Icicles are formed from snow or ice on your roof (or other areas like my arbor) combined with below freezing and the sun usually on the south side of your buildings.

The sun helps to melt the snow or ice which forms water drips. The water drips in the below freezing air temperature which makes the drops freeze again, and bang you now have icicles! They usually look like a

long thin carrot or cone shape. This happens because as the thin water sheet is dripping off of something, the outside of the icicle gets colder while it reaches the bottom, then the bottom refreezes and will add to the length of the icicle. This will happen because of heat energy that rises, it will insulate like a blanket making it thicker at the top where the icicle stays warmer, and the dripping water will continue to flow near the bottom of the icicle where it is thinner making the drops freeze again. While the weather conditions are the same with below freezing and some sunshine the icicles will continue to happen.

At about 35 degrees Fahrenheit the icicles will start to fall off the buildings.

There has been recordings of gigantic icicles around the world in 2006 Accu Weather in North Carolina thought that a webcam had found a 100 foot icicle but this one was never measured. In Scotland at the Dulnain Bridge a icicle grew from 12 feet to 27 feet within weeks.

How does the SIM swapping scam work?

Cannabis Edibles, Extracts And Topicals Available Soon In B.C.

The Province is now distributing new categories of legal non-medical cannabis products.

This begins the second phase of available products since legalization began in October 2018.

The Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) received its first shipments of products under the new categories on Dec. 18, 2019, and has made them available to private and public retailers throughout the province via its wholesale customer portal. Consumers can expect to see these products on legal retail store shelves in late December, in accordance with LDB’s shipping schedules.

The LDB, the sole wholesale distributor of non-medical cannabis in British Columbia, has registered more than 260 individual products that are within the new categories of edibles, extracts and topicals to make up its initial wholesale product assortment. However, only a small number are expected to be available for retail sale within the first few months of 2020. Availability of products is dependent upon a number of factors, including the ability of manufacturers to meet demand from other markets across Canada.

“The addition of edibles, extracts and topicals represents the provincial government’s commitment to providing safe, regulated non-medical cannabis products to B.C. consumers,” said Blain Lawson, LDB’s general manager and CEO. “A lot of work has gone into procuring these products, and we look forward to working with our suppliers as they continue to introduce new products to market.”

In the last month the Vernon and North Okanagan RCMP have received almost 60 reports of items being stolen from vehicles. These crimes have spanned across the North Okanagan.

The items stolen have ranged from money, suitcases, ski equipment, purses, wallets, tools, sunglasses and computers. Some vehicles had been left unlocked, and some had their windows smashed to steal the items inside.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a few hours, overnight, or several days while on a trip” said Cst Jocelyn Noseworthy of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “If it’s valuable to you, chances are a thief will think it’s valuable too. Protect things by not leaving them in your vehicle.”

Better Supports For People Facing Poverty

People experiencing poverty now have better access to income and disability assistance through a series of changes designed to give them the help they need, when they need it.

“We took a careful look at the existing policies for income and disability assistance and asked if they’re helping or harming the people they are meant to support,” said Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “All of these changes are removing unnecessary barriers that prevent people who were already struggling to get the support they need to break out of the cycle of poverty.”

Changes to the Employment and Assistance Act and the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act and regulations took effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

These include: • ending the requirement for seniors to pursue Canada Pension Plan retirement benefits before the age of 65; • expanding access to security deposits and introducing a pet damage deposit; • amending the definition of spouse; and

Simpson made the announcement while meeting with one of the new community integration specialists (CIS) at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. Through the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, the CIS position is designed to bridge the gap between some of B.C.’s most vulnerable people and supports and services. CIS workers go into communities to connect people to their local agencies and organizations.

The CIS team and policy amendments are part of a cross-government effort to better connect people with the services they need. Barriers, like a lack of identification or a security deposit for a home, can prevent people from receiving important services, accessing income assistance or finding stable housing. Government is identifying and reducing barriers by updating policies and ensuring that the changes reach the people they are designed to help.

The changes are part of a series of amendments. The first set of changes took effect in July 2019 and included expanding access to the identification supplement, removing the $10,000 asset limit on a primary vehicle and expanding the moving supplement for people to move anywhere in B.C. All of the changes reflect the principles of affordability, accessibility, social inclusion and reconciliation, as laid out in TogetherBC: British Columbia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Delivering on the Poverty Reduction Strategy is a shared priority between government and the BC Green Party caucus and is part of the Confidence and Supply Agreement.

5 Problems Cars Are Prone To In Winter And How To Fix Them Winter weather can lead to mechanical mishaps and be the cause of various issues with your car. Here are five common cold weather problems and how to solve them.

1. A frozen lock Use a lock de-icer, windshield washer fluid or a hair dryer to melt the ice. If your key is entirely made of metal, you can use a lighter to heat it before slowly inserting it in the lock and (hopefully) melting the ice.

2. Iced over windows Use a defrosting product in combination with a good quality scraper to quickly clear your windshield.

To stop ice from accumulating on your windshield and windows, use a tarp or large piece of cardboard to cover them while your car’s parked.

Finally, prevent frost from developing inside your car by leaving a window cracked open to let the humidity escape. Alternatively, leave a container filled with cat litter open somewhere inside the cab.

3. Stuck wheels Try to wedge pieces of cardboard, wood or

something else that’ll provide friction beneath the wheels. Traction aids, sand, cat litter and gravel are other options. Gently press on the accelerator until your tires are free.

4. Frozen car door Pour lukewarm water or windshield washer fluid over the door joint (don’t use hot water). Once your car door is open, make sure to wipe it thoroughly to remove all traces of the liquid.

To prevent this issue from happening in the future, apply a protective product to the rubber seal.

Alternatively, place a large plastic bag between the seal and the car’s frame before closing the door.

5. Unscheduled roadside stops Stock your trunk with warm clothes and an emergency blanket in case you’re forced to stop on the side of the road, either to wait for help to arrive or for the weather to ease.

If you’re in for a long wait, crack a window so air can circulate and turn the engine on every 15 to 20 minutes.

Finally, make sure to keep an emergency kit in your trunk so you can deal with any other unfortunate winter surprises.

Car Washes: An Essential Component Of Winter Car Care Driving in winter means contending with ice, snow, gravel, salt, slush and sand. It’s therefore no wonder that cars get exceptionally dirty at this time of year. Unfortunately, an accumulation of dirt and debris on your car can damage it, which is why it’s important to clean it regularly.

As a general rule, you should wash your car once a month. However, certain factors may prompt more frequent cleanings, such as lots of slush and particularly heavy use of salt or gravel on the roads.

Whether you use an automatic car wash or do the job yourself, make sure to focus on the undercarriage.

This is the place where dirt and grime accumulate the most.

If possible, avoid cleaning your car when it’s very cold. Pick milder days when the temperature is above the freezing point, especially if you’re washing it outside. In any case, make sure to use a microfibre cloth to dry

the rubber seals on your doors and trunk. This will prevent them from freezing shut.

Cleaning your car regularly will help mitigate the development of rust by eliminating sources of corrosion. However, no amount of washing, no matter how thorough, can replace an anti-rust treatment.

B.C. Home Owner Grant confirmed for 2020

The 2020 homeowner grant threshold in British Columbia has been set at $1.525 million, maintaining that 92% of homeowners continue to be eligible for the B.C. Home Owner Grant.

The threshold is down from $1.65 million in 2019 due to moderating housing prices throughout the province. The threshold has again been set to ensure the same percentage of residential property owners are below the threshold and eligible for the full, basic grant amount. In years prior, rapidly rising housing prices led to an increase in the threshold.

The homeowner grant reduces the amount of property tax people pay to a municipality or to the Province for people who live in a rural area.
