ARTBEAT Arts & Culture from the Edge The Monashee Arts Council will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 8th at 6:30pm over at the White Valley Community Centre (2250 Shields Ave. Lumby, BC) and everyone is welcome to attend. We’ve got several new board members on board this year and would love for you to stop by to meet them and to find out how you can become more involved in the arts and culture scene in our community!

Meet the Artist: We’ve been working in conjunction with the Okanagan Regional Library (Lumby branch) for the past few years on a local art initiative.

The Meet the Artist program is hosted monthly at the library and features MAC members’ artwork in their display area. There is a meet-and-greet event near the end of the show at the library where the public has the opportunity to meet the featured artist and ask questions or watch a demonstration. If you are interested in being one of the artists involved, please give us a shout!

wondercafé.live! Rises Again Mabel Lake farmer Herman Harlos and retired social worker Dave Bosomworth met in a cyberspace discussion site and gelled. Both are self-proclaimed spirituality nuts who not only discovered they were from the same rural community but also that they shared a common vision. They’ve created wondercafé.live! as Lumby’s new social venue. [“Good Discussion Encouraged”, The Morning Star, B7, Oct.18, 2008 by Greta Cooper] From September 5th, 2008 to April 20th, 2012, Coordinators Harlos(lft.) and Bosomworth(rt.) presented a total of 69 programs hosted by the local Lumby United Church, ranging from the deadly serious “Monsanto: Poster Child for Corporate Manipulation and Deceit” (Neville O’Grady) through the slightly quirky “Close Encounters of the 5th Kind: Protocols for contacting Extra-Terrestrials” (Deborah Warren) to the entertaining “Maybe a Fish Does Need a Bicycle: Songs and Insight from an Incredible Journey” (Michelle Nickerson). All that was needed was a microphone, a simple 4’ x 4’ blocked stage, small groups of 4 to 8 tables, coffee/tea, a passionate volunteer Presenter and enthusiastic community guests, prepared to listen and participate in discussion. From 2012 to 2014, Bosomworth continued the program showing documentaries and movies that had discussion points worth showing.

Geoff, a famous Bubbleman, author and speaker throughout parts of Canada and the USA, will speak on the rewards of expanding and even stepping out of that particular bubble into a greater place of possibility. The Coordinator and Community Team are proud and honoured to have Geoff and Jen as the opening guests for wondercafé. live! Happy New Year!

The time of resolutions and the newest fitness crazes and diets. Unfortunately, this is where many people fail by going in too hard too fast and placing unrealistic goals upon themselves. The best advice is to start with something that you can realistically stick too. Break your goal down into achievable pieces. Many resolutions are to lose weight, which is a big goal. Fortunately there are many components attached to it that can be achieved 1 at a time. There are 4 main components (D.E.E.M) Diet, Exercise, Education and Mindset in no particular order.

1. Diet - setting up a balanced nutritious food plan designed for you and not the next big diet fad or product or what someone else is doing that is the polar opposite of you.

2. Exercise - starting with something that is achievable within your means and limitations.

Many will go for the gold immediately causing injury and or defeat, then just quit all together.

3. Education - researching or talking to a professional in certain fields to understand your limits and what is realistic for your body and lifestyle. Be open, trust and be willing to accept the information provided.

4. Mindset - envisioning your success. This can actually be the most important component as when you meditate in a way as seeing yourself succeeding you will achieve what you set out to do, as long as it is realistic.

A big thing to keep in mind is that changing your life to be healthier does not have to be expensive, fancy, overdone or too hard to do. When it comes to general health, do what is within your means, you don’t need the most expensive fitness gear or clothing to do a workout, you can go for a walk, jog or bike ride in almost anything you are comfortable exercising in. You don’t have to join a gym, maybe it’s a local fitness class or a home workout plan. You don’t have to spend too much time if you don’t have it; 30 minutes a day is all you

need whether spread out in 5 - 10 minutes blocks or all at once. You don’t have to start with exercise you can start with cleaning up your diet, maybe it’s changing out a couple of coffees, juices or pops for water or cutting out sweets during the weekdays.

All of these are small easy changes that can be slowly added together to reach an overall goal.

Still with all that you may have some fear and need some guidance on where to start. Hiring a professional is money well spent. Make sure to seek someone that has certifications in the areas you need help with. Many fitness instructors or personal trainers will have a basic nutrition but are not certified nutritionists or vice versa. This comes into great importance if you have any chronic conditions, allergies, diet restrictions, vegetarian or vegan, new to exercise or an athlete training for a specific sport.

Proper nutrition, safe and specific exercises are crucial to your success.

No matter where you start, just start! You may think a little thing like not adding sugar to your coffee is so miniscule what is the use, but it’s better than doing nothing at all. Once you achieve that first little thing no matter how small, you will have the willpower to do the

next little thing and sooner or later all those little things turn into a really big thing and you have success in something you can sustain and be proud of, even if it takes a little longer.

Tens of thousands of families were helped with lower child care costs, while Medical Service Plan (MSP) fees were lowered by 50% and will be eliminated beginning in the new year. People also continued to save money on lower-cost ferry trips and eliminated bridge tolls, as the government works to put people first.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Hand Over All Your Chocolate And Nobody Gets Hurt! LOL Yum, Chocolate. This is a gift that is good any time. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, or just because. it doesn’t matter if it is given to you, or you bought it yourself, it is still a great gift.

I got some Chocolate for Christmas, it was great.

My favorite is Ferrero Rocher Chocolate has been around way before any of were born or even thought of.

It is believed that the Aztecs around 450 BC were the first founders of this tasty food which they called xocoatl this was a drink that was very bitter that had been brewed from cacao beans. They thought that the cacao seeds were a gift from their gods ( I believe that to be true) one of their gods in particular their God Of Wisdom Quetzalcoatl. They believed that it had magical powers, which was used not only as a drink or a food but was also used in other events such as birth, marriage, and of course death.

Wow that would be a lot of Chocolate let’s try it see what we can buy with Chocolate LOL) The cacao tree named Theobroma cacao has a special meaning can you guess what it is? Okay I’ll tell you : “Food of the Gods” of course it does what else could it mean! At first Chocolate had a very bittersweet taste to it, it was when the Europeans tasted this bittersweet substance that they discovered if they added cane sugar or honey to it it would take away the bittersweet taste and leave them with a flavorful substance that they could enjoy.

In the 17th century drinking Chocolate was the thing to do, but at that time you had to be rich to enjoy it, it was thought this drink for the rich had a lot of properties to it, that is was medicinal and that it could cure a lot of illnesses, or that it was an aphrodisiac (this was a favorite of Casanova, he always had some on hand to woo the ladies.)

In the late 1700’s the steam engine made it possible for everyone to get it.

In 1764 Dr. James Baker and his friend John Hannon created Bakers Chocolate, but at that time the company was called Hannon’s Best Chocolate, they kept this name for 15 years, then John went to the West Indies in 1779 and never returned that was when the named changed to Bakers Chocolate.

In 1828 powder Chocolate was made by a Dutch Chemist.

In 1847 Joseph Fry created the first Chocolate bar.

In 1868 Cadbury Chocolates hit the scene in England. A few years later Nestle came out with Milk Chocolate.

During the Revolutionary War, in lieu of a pay-

Gas Price Clue Mystery Game

by Kris Sims, B.C. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation A funny thing is happening with the province’s investigations into soaring gas prices. It’s like a game of Clue, but some pieces are missing so nobody can prove it was Colonel Mustard in the library with the lead pipe.

For the gas-price investigations, key pieces are off the table to make sure nobody finds the real answer: it was the premier, in the legislature, with bad policies.

Motorists in British Columbia know they are getting hosed at the gas pumps and they know it’s mostly because of government.

Premier John Horgan has jacked up taxes on fuel and his NDP-Green team has been fighting against expanding the Trans Mountain Pipeline, a piece of infrastructure that supplies gas products to the Lower Mainland and stops along the way. Then the premier

wonders why the fuel prices are so high. But everyone knows what happens when you hike taxes and choke supply.

Horgan goes much farther than on-camera soliloquizing at Victoria’s legislature.

He ordered the British Columbia Utilities Commission to play a game of Clue with gas prices while taking key pieces off the board.

Taxes, special fuel regulations and pipelines are all out of bounds. Investigators weren’t allowed to examine the real evidence.

The utilities commission released its summertime report on Aug. 30. It couldn’t explain why prices were on average 13 cents per litre higher than they should be. Then they put out another report in November, for some reason, saying the same thing.

But this isn’t an unsolvable mystery. As petroleum experts have explained, factors such as supply and demand play a role. And government is a major factor.

Gasoline and diesel are in high demand and relatively short supply in the Lower Mainland, with the small Burnaby refinery not able to produce enough to fill the area gas stations to the point where retail prices would drop. More pipeline capacity would expand supply.

An even bigger factor is taxes. In Metro Vancouver, taxes eat up about 54 cents per litre of gasoline.

The carbon tax is now 8.9 cents per litre, and the TransLink tax is 18.5 cents per litre. Both recent tax hikes are Horgan’s doing. The rest of B.C. forks over about 40 cents per litre in taxes. B.C. also has the provincial excise tax at 8.5 cents per litre. Horgan has the power to lower or scrap them, but instead he increases taxes and conjures crippled inquiries to chase wild geese.

What’s perhaps most mysterious in this caper is motive. What is Horgan driving at with these handcuffed inquiries and reports? Aren’t unaffordably high gas prices something he wants?

Horgan and his NDP-Green team have repeatedly said that a high carbon tax is needed to reduce peoples’ use of fuels, so they will “alter their behaviour” – that’s fancy political speak for “jack up the gas price, so people can’t afford it.”

And yet, when Metro Vancouver routinely has the highest fuel prices in North America, often at about $1.60 per litre, Horgan wrings his hands and beats his breast, wondering what’s causing the unaffordable prices for the people of his province.

Which Horgan is the real one? The one who says the jacked up taxes are necessary so people alter their behaviour or the person who says he cares about the working class and wants to make life in B.C. more affordable?

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation delivered 504 shiny Gas Price Detection Tools – mirrors – to the premier this summer so he could get a good look at the person pushing up gas prices.

After he identifies the culprit, he needs to do the right thing for British Columbians: lower taxes on fuel and stop blocking the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Lumby Midget Stars - Last Game of 2019

Lumby Midget Stars travelled to Salmon Arm for their last game of the 2019 year.

The Stars faced the Salmon Arm Rec#2 team on Dec 21st The evenly matched teams ended the first period scoreless. It wasn’t until 12:45 of the second period when Zach Young buried the first goal of the game from a series of beautiful passes from line mates Tage Kineshanko and Jordyn Morris to put the stars ahead. A couple minutes later the Salmon Arm squad evened it up. The Stars kept the pressure on with D man Peter Romailler firing a hot shot to beat the Salmon Arm Keeper to go up 2-1. Kineshanko

received his second assist with Ryder Quibell. Then with only 40 seconds left in the second period Young got his second dinger from Morris and Romailler to put the Stars ahead 3-1. The third period was an exciting one with Salmon Arm narrowing the Stars lead to one with a goal at 16:55. Stars Linden Catt provided the 4th Stars goal of the game at 14:47 on a feed from Andrew Rannelli. But the game wasn’t over. Salmon Arm answered back with only 2:34 left in the game with lots of pressure to make it intense right until the end. Tyra Cunningham and Ethan Keber shared the goal keeping duties and both made several spectacular saves to keep their team in the game.

Lumby Atom Stars

After their Christmas break, the Lumby Atom 2 Stars were back in action this past weekend.

On Saturday the team met up with Vernon 2.

Quinn Church opened the scoring and it was tied 1-1 at the end of the first. Into the second period, Lumby took the lead and Vernon just couldn’t get shots passed goaltender Isaac Pol. This was another game where the whole team worked together to take the win. Logan Beeswanger had 5 goals (2 were assisted

by Lincoln Alger and Lane Moger), Locklyn Quibell had 4 goals and an assist (2 goals were assisted by Caydence Quibell and Paxton Holbrook), Jaxsin Macleod had 2 goals, Jonas Cournoyer scored on a how-

itzer from the blue line and got an assist and Finley Baines scored a goal on a slapper from the blue line.

On Sunday, Lumby went up against Winfield 2.

Goaltender Isaac Pol had another awesome game with only one shot getting through. Quinn Church and Logan Beeswanger each got a hat trick (+1), Paxton Holbrook, Jaxsin Macleod and Locklyn Quibell each got 2 goals (+1) and Caydence Quibell got 1 goal and 2 assists. Forwards Lane Moger, Finley Baines, Lincoln Alger and Sierra Shaw contributed with their relentless forechecking and back-checking. Defense Jonas Cournoyer and Kayden Moger stuffed the opposition and helped Lumby take the win.

PAT DUKE ARENA CHANGE ROOM RENOVATION AND EXPANSION PROJECT UPDATE

Construction services for the Pat Duke Arena change room renovation and expansion project are set to be issued for procurement by February 1, 2020.

Challenges that were encountered due to the age of the building, including the requirement of structural reinforcement, have now been resolved and the project is officially in the detailed design phase. After the procurement of construction services in February 2020, the project will be completed using a phased approach to avoid impact on the ice season. The arena will not be accessible in the dry-floor season of 2020 (March – September), as construction will be underway.

Upgrades will include a full suite of four newly constructed change rooms, a north warming and viewing area, entryway and modest improvements to existing change rooms.

Background The Pat Duke Memorial Arena provides ice time for a variety of users, including minor hockey, figure skating, ringette and leisure ice uses, and has been serving the community since 1967.

Unfortunately, due to its age, the needs of all of the facility users are not being met. Due to an insufficient number of change rooms, female ice users have had to use inadequate facilities during co-ed play. The arena

also poses challenges for users with mobility issues and does not meet today’s standards for accessibility.

As part of a community effort that began in 2016, residents and users came together and initiated fundraising to improve amenities in the arena. As a result of these efforts, Lumby won Kraft Hockeyville 2016, receiving $100,000 to put towards improving the facility.

Leveraging the community momentum that was generated through the successful Kraft Hockeyville win, in March 2018 the Village of Lumby and the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) were awarded an additional $2,595,625 million dollars to make improvements to the Pat Duke Arena in Lumby, B.C. Additional funding for the project included a grant from TELUS, and community fundraising totalling $75,000, and $230,000 provided by the RDNO through the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture service The $3 M project is focused on adding four new change rooms and renovating the existing change rooms, but will also include upgrades to make the facility more operationally effective, safe, and energy-efficient.

The funding for this project has enabled a significant renovation and expansion to this cherished community arena, allowing it to continue to serve the North Okanagan well into the future.
