Exercise for People Over 60 Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room on each side. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb bags. Then try 50-lb bags and eventually try to get where you can lift 100-lb bags. After you feel confident at this level, put a potato in each bag. Why Did The Tomato Blush?... Because It Saw The Salad Dressing
The Tomato
It’s been an extremely busy week both at the Lumby and District Public Market and at the Monashee CoOp and at the greenhouse as well. Everyone is busy planting their gardens and yards and with the wonderful weather we had this last weekend I’m sure everyone has been as busy as I have . Many more are still prepping their garden beds and I’m sure that many of us still have a lot more work ahead of us to finish up. Still lots of time to get it in as now the weather should be in our favour and the season has really just begun. The Tomato is probably one of the most rewarding and productive additions to most gardens. There is nothing tastier than a garden fresh Tomato especially if it is grown in your own garden and it is not difficult to be a success at growing them even if its in a pot on your balcony. They do however require some attention and the right nutrients and of course some loving care. The varieties of Tomatoes are endless and with the many new hybrids that are disease resistant everyone can grow enough to provide themselves with this delight. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that should be planted deeper that the soil level that your plant will be when purchased. This allows for more roots to develop and that will mean more nutrients will be taken into the plant. There are some perils to be considered when growing the plant as over and under watering can be a problem. They are fairly hardy and most errors in their care can be corrected quickly if you pay attention to the progress of your plant. Once your Tomato plant is planted and established it enjoys a good deep watering of about 2” in depth weekly this of course may have to be increased if the weather becomes extremely hot. Growing them in pots will be different and you should ensure they receive good moisture without drowning them. Mulching can be used to conserve moisture and suppress weeds however, if we do receive a lot of rain over a long period of time this mulch may need to be removed. Watch for yellowing leaves as well as a change in their texture to make your decision. Pruning is also important, suckers that grow from the main stem near the base of the plant should be removed as well as the growth that

appears in the axis of the branches that grow from the main stem. Also remove any leaves that are yellowing or that extend down and are touching the ground. This can help prevent any fungal diseases that can be picked up from the soil. If you smoke cigarettes be sure to wash your hands before touching the plant as mosaic virus can be transmitted to the plant from tobacco. Tomatoes should not be planted in the same area of your garden for at least two years and should be spaced at least 2 feet apart. Many people put egg shells in the planting hole being used for their Tomato plants and this can be good as calcium is vital to the plant to prevent blossom end rot. If there is a spot at the bottom of the fruit it can easily reversed for the upcoming fruit by applying a calcium based fertilizer, using egg shells at this point will not work unless you make a tea from egg shells as it take some time for the calcium to be extracted and absorbed and the plant needs calcium immediately. Epsom salts are great treat for your Tomatoes as well as most of your other household and garden plants but should be used sparingly 1 teaspoon in a gallon of water once a month is sufficient. This will give your plants trace minerals and will help with uptake of calcium that your plant requires. Look forward to seeing you at the market on Saturday at the greenhouse or head to the Monashee CoOp where you will find a good selection of plants that will to fill that open spot or make a nice addition to your yard and garden! Healthy Camping Tips
The long weekend is now behind us and marks the start of camping season. Camping is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors, as it is good to get in touch with nature and get away from it all. No phones, computers, TV’s or notepads (at least hopefully for the most part), helps us slow down and ground us. Reading, fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, time with family…whatever it may be, are all part of the experience. Although this “get away from it all,” attitude can reflect into the foods we choose to eat. Snacking and meals can go to the wayside with lots of chips, cookies, hot dogs, hamburgers and other highly saturated fatty, salty, and sugary foods as well as drinks. To enjoy camping and still eat half decent, here are a few tips. Planning: Plan out meals and snacks before you go, aim for a balance between meals that require cooking and no-cook meals. No-cook lunches and snacks are great and can save camp stove fuel and prep time.
Meals: • Plan for some one-pot meals like chili or rice pilaf. These are easy to prep and serve along with little clean up. • Store and label foods in container pre-measured so all will be used and stops from overeating. • Bake high fiber muffins, energy balls, homemade granola prior too. • If not baking then source out healthy gra-

Drinks: • Bring frozen berries and add water, to further the flavour mash them up to release juice, drink the liquid and eat the mash after. • Herbal teas like rooibos, chamomile and hibiscus if not liking plain water, add flavour without caffeine or sugar • Have water in-between alcoholic drinks and stick to clear spirits and mix with carbonated waters like bubbly to add flavour and cut down on calories. By balancing out most of your meals and snacks to be healthy, you can still have room for a camp favourite, like the Smore. There are even ways to make this favourite a little healthier with still including the main ingredient, the marshmallow. Substitute milk chocolate for 70% or higher dark chocolate and forego the graham cracker by inserting the dark chocolate into the marshmallow. Still tastes great and is a fun over the fire snack. Hopefully as mentioned in the beginning there will be some form of exercise. But if just going to relax by fishing or reading, it is still great to try get in some form of exercise. Just simply going for an early morning brisk walk or afternoon stroll, can further help ground us, reduce stress from regular life, improve sleep and change mindset as you take in the peace and tranquility of nature around you. It is like a reset for your body. Mikkie Nettles, Certified Personal Trainer Holistic & Sports Nutritionist Follow DEEM Health on Facebook, or contact info@deemhealth.ca

Photos and Memories From The Lumby Museum About one km west of Greenbush Lake there was a small log cabin nestled in a grove of very old hemlock, fir and cedar trees. Art Haycock built the cabin 1915 and would spend his winters there working his trap line that extended from Mabel Lake in the west to the summit of the Monashee range in the east. In the 1960's, Gordon James Sr. bought Art's trapline and used the same cabin. Little remains of this interesting piece of our history as in 2020 a large dead hemlock leaning over the cabin fell on the cabin and destroyed the structure. Art Haycock Cabin
helps improve your memory and concentration. Bridge isn’t a game of chance. It’s a strategy game that requires reasoning, mental calculation, creativity and decision-making skills. It’s a real mental exercise and may even help prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. If you want to give this card game a try, look for a bridge club in your area.

If adopted, Bylaw No. 844 will authorize the Village to borrow up to $2,901,696 to be repaid over a period not to exceed 25 (twenty-five) years to provide a portion of the funding required. $2,901,696 is Lumby’s contribution to the $10,880,000 project with $7,978,304 being funded by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) grant. The borrowed funds would be used to construct the upgrades for the existing wastewater treatment plant (lagoon system). Improved wastewater treatment is required to bring the Village into compliance with the British Columbia Municipal Wastewater Regulation and to continue to meet the Federal Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations. The project funds borrowed ($2,901,696) will be repaid through accumulated reserves. A copy of Bylaw No. 844 and a proposal summary are available at the Village office located at 1775 Glencaird Street, Lumby, B.C., during each business day between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or online at www.lumby.ca. Municipal Office is closed daily between noon and 1:00 pm for lunch. ERF’s must be submitted to the Village on forms that can be obtained during regular business hours from the Village Municipal Office located at 1775 Glencaird Street, Lumby, B.C., or downloaded from www.lumby.ca. The only ERF’s that will be accepted as valid are the ones provided by the Village or an accurate copy of the form. The only persons entitled to sign the Elector Response Forms are qualified electors within the Village of Lumby to which this Alternative Approval Process applies. There are two (2) types of electors: 1. A resident elector is an individual who is qualified to vote in a jurisdiction by virtue of living (residing) in the jurisdiction. Resident electors signing the elector response form must provide their name and address. To sign an Elector Response Form as a resident elector a person must: • • • • •
be 18 years of age or older; and be a Canadian citizen; and have lived in British Columbia for at least six months immediately prior to signing the Elector Response Form; and lives in the jurisdiction (Village of Lumby); and not be disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.
2. A non-resident property elector is an individual who does not live (does not reside) in the participating service area but is entitled to vote by virtue of owning real property in that jurisdiction. Non-resident property electors must provide their name and the address of the property in relation to which they are entitled to register as a non-resident property elector. Property owned in whole or in part by a corporation does not qualify under the non-resident property elector provisions. To sign an elector response form as a non resident property elector a person must: • • • • • •
not be entitled to register as a resident elector in the participating service area; and be 18 years of age or older; and be a Canadian citizen; and have lived in British Columbia for at least six months immediately prior to signing the Elector Response Form; and not be disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law; and owns property in the jurisdiction (Village of Lumby).
Be advised that only one non-resident property elector may sign an Elector Response Form per property, regardless of how many people own the property; and, that owner must have the written consent of a majority of the other property owner(s) to sign the response form on their behalf. Non-resident property elector consent forms are available at www.lumby.ca or contact info@lumby.ca to request a form be forwarded to you. NOTE: There is no Corporate Vote – no corporation is entitled to be registered as an elector or have a representative registered as an elector and no corporation is entitled to vote. Original, signed ERF submissions will be accepted in person, by mail, fax or email to: Corporation of the Village of Lumby PO Box 430 1775 Glencaird Street Lumby, BC V0E 2G0 info@lumby.ca / 250.547.6894 [fax] *Note: Postmarks will not be accepted as the date of submission. Further information regarding this Alternative Approval Process, including elector qualifications, is available on www.lumby.ca or by phone 250.547.2171.

OBITUARIES Ronald Earl
Genier
July 28, 1933 ~ May 21, 2022 Ron passed away at Hillside Village. Prior to that he had lived with his sister and family in Salmon Arm. Predeceased by his parents, Mary and Earl Genier; sons, Ronal and Andrew; first wife Irene (Janicki); and partner Virginia Reed. He is survived by his sister, Mern (Rod) Gerow and family of Salmon Arm; brother Noel, of Penticton; three children, Shawn (Brad), Jacqueline, and Roger (Maria); six grandchildren, Sierra, Cole, Tyson, Taylor, Alexis (Damion), and Chad; one great grandchild, Mackaye; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Ron grew up on the Genier farm in Lumby, farming, milking cows, hunting, and fishing. Ron decided he wanted to drive truck. His first truck bought in 1959 started the Legend. Known as Junior, Old Black, Skinner, Francis and many other names. He had many trucks with many names on his Reineg Trucking Trucks. Ron’s Doberman, Pinch, rode shotgun and many wondered who was boss. Ron could have a full beard or be clean shaven. Tough on the outside but soft on the inside. He was 100% committed to whatever was happening, playing ball, fishin’, hunting, heckling, talking with his fists, helping a friend or stranger, telling a story, playing crib, being the best big brother. He declared himself unofficially unelected mayor of Golden. He will be missed by family and many friends. He had a warm heart and beautiful smile. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Club Shuswap Golf Resort, 5751 TCH N.E., Canoe, V0E1K0.
