School Sports, Bloom put a team in and competed in AA and AAA and went to those provincials and came back with an 11th place finish. This years squad had athletes on that team and at the time were in grade 9. School sports, Provincial Championships and Ultimate have been on hold since then. So the team hopes to end their high school athletic careers with an Ultimate win with their senior squad.

Just for Fun Living in a Small Town

• Our town is so small we don't have a town drunk, so we all take turns.

• You can tell who's driving by your house by the sound of their truck.

• Your teachers either taught your parents or are your parents.

• When someone asks, "Where are you from?", you then describe the general area that your town is in, referencing the nearest city that they might have heard of even though it's 4 hours away.

• People say they're from a small town with 10,000 people. You're like... uh... That's a city, fool.

• When you are out at the store, you see someone you know. When you are out for dinner, you see someone you know. When you're out in the bush hunting, you see someone you know.

• Being 'stuck behind a tractor', is a totally legitimate reason for being late.

• If you don't want the whole town to know about it, then you better not do it.

• Your city friends talk about their high school and they have more people in their grad class than you have in your entire school.

• You still know most of the people from your kindergarten class.

• That whole 'Don't date your friends Ex' or 'Don't date a friends cousin' is a difficult thing.

Police Warn Of Increase In Counterfeit Cash The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is warning the public of a recent rise in counterfeit cash being circulated in the North Okanagan.

Since May 5th, police have received numerous reports of counterfeit bills showing up at banks in the North Okanagan. The majority of these counterfeits have been Canadian $50 bills, however, several U.S. $100 bills, and Canadian $5 bills have also been discovered. It’s unknown if the transactions are related at this time, but police are issuing a reminder to the public that there are steps that can be taken to prevent these counterfeit transactions from taking place.

"Canadian currency in general has several unique security features designed to prevent counterfeiting," states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. "By far, the most recognizable feature is that Canadian currency is made from polymer, not paper and the difference is immediately noticeable. The holograms in real currency are embedded, fakes will have them taped or glued leaving an unfinished, rough edge.

These differences are easy to spot if you know what you are looking for."

Tips to prevent counterfeit transactions • Be wary of people using large bills to make small purchases. Fraudsters will do this to try to make off with the largest amount of legitimate currency possible; • If you suspect a person has given a counterfeit bill, remain polite, refuse the transaction, and ask for another bill or form of payment. Remember, the person may have no idea the bill is counterfeit.

• Provide staff with information and training on how to spot counterfeit bills; • Develop store policies around accepting larger cash denominations, such as asking for ID. Additional information for staff and security features of currency can be found by visiting the Bank of Canada Website.

Time To Plant

Well the traditional planting time has arrived and all my weather channels say the evening temperatures are excellent and on an upward trend. It was wonderful to see all the familiar gardeners at the market this weekend as well as the ones that have come to the greenhouse for their plants. I look forward to seeing more of you over the coming weeks! I have been extremely busy but I did manage to get some planting done and look forward to a pleasant few days doing more. I am pleased to have met so many newcomers to Lumby, I’m sure you’ll be very happy with your move to this area.

One of the items that people asked about planting now were beans and if you plant them too early and the soil temperature is less than 60 degrees there is a high risk of the seeds just rotting in the ground.

Peppers require a fairly high temperature to do well but should have no problem being planted now as temperatures will be increasing nicely now.

Your seedlings and bedding plants should be watched closely for any sign of damage. Slugs, Earwigs and Cutworms can do a lot of damage in a very short time. Slugs and Earwigs work at night so one often only sees the damage and is unaware of what might be causing it. It is best to take a proactive step while you are planting to prevent the destruction.

Coffee grounds are a great deterrent to slugs just sprinkle them around the base of your plant and gently mix it in the dirt. Not only does this work well it is very good for the soil. Strong smelling herbs such as Basil works well and will also attract pollinators.

You can also lay wet newspaper around your plants slugs and earwigs like the habitat and in the morning you will see exactly what has been doing the damage. Just roll up the newspaper and dispose of it in sealed bags in your garbage or burn if you are able. They also love the wrappers from your favourite fast food places they love the aroma and are quick to get caught up in the trap although you may have to weigh them down with rocks to keep them from blowing into the neighbours yard. A soup can half filled with soapy water can be placed around the garden bury the tin about half way down and for extra enticement put bacon grease on the inside lip of the tin. Also shallow dishes containing beer work well too just bury them to about a quarter inch from the lip so they have easy access.

My husband is not so much in favour of this method but it does work! Cutworms are easily identified as they curl up when exposed. Diatomaceous Earth should be sprinkled around and worked into the top few inches of the soil. You can also place a cardboard cuff around your plant again down a couple inches to protect it from damage. Once the plant is a bit larger the damage is not so devastating.

Creating A Legacy: Inaugural Indigenous Youth Entrepreneurship Day A Success

Tasha Swite, owner of Spirit of the Lake Native Boutique, speaks to School District No. 22 students at the district head office Thursday for the Indigenous Youth Entrepreneurship Day. Organizers hope to expand the event next year to include more learning, business pitches and opportunities to gain materials they need to take their business ideas forward.

When Tasha Swite introduces herself at the inaugural Indigenous Youth Entrepreneurship Day in Vernon, she says: “I’m a mother. I’m a wife. And I’m a fourth-generation entrepreneur.”

Also, the first woman among that long line of self-employed Swites.

Tasha Swite is the owner of N'ha-itk, Spirit of the Lake Native Boutique in West Kelowna, and she was one of several people sharing her story of entrepreneurship to help educate and inspire Indigenous high school students Thursday.

life into my business—and I love every minute,” Swite told the students, now three years after taking the leap to open the gift shop that sells everything from intricately beaded earrings to handcrafted-in-BC rabbit fur moccasins. In addition to supporting Indigenous artisans, she says it’s also her way of sharing Syilx culture. Her great-grandfather was a trapper on Swite Mountain, her grandpa ran a horse corral and sold firewood, and her father ran a fruit stand and is now a contractor. “This, now, is my legacy as well.”

Giving Indigenous students from across School District 22 a chance to see themselves in other entrepreneurs was just one of several reasons why the district, along with Community Futures North Okanagan, set up the first Indigenous Youth Entrepreneurship Day, which ran May 5 at the district office.

“One of our wishes is that these students who want to start their own business someday will know that it’s absolutely possible, with hard work,” says Debbie Meyer, career coordinator, School District No. 22. “We also want them to know that they don’t have to do it alone—there are resources in the community to support them. And we wanted them to have that connection with mentors to make it more of a reality for them.”

Twelve students from across the school district attended the event, filled with activities and speakers from the local Indigenous entrepreneur community.

Daniel Drysdale, a 17-year-old Charles Bloom Secondary School student said the day has helped him begin to imagine his dream of running an HVAC business after he graduates.

“I liked hearing about other business owners’ stories, the challenges they’ve been through and how they’ve overcome them.”

Andrea Mack, a 16-year-old Kalamalka Secondary School student, says, “It has been a great learning experience. Now I know that starting a business is probably not going to be a straight line,” and her hands zig and zag to indicate the winding road that is running a small business.

Yesterday, it was beautiful outside. We haven't felt the warmth on our faces for a while now. It felt wonderful. We went for a drive to Greenwood, to see some people. I know, you are thinking "you went for a drive, with these gas prices, are you crazy?" Maybe, and yes it did cost us an arm and a leg ($126.50 and we were not even on empty yet) but hey the gas is probably not going to come down for quite some time and we can't just not carry on with our lives.

So anyways we took the Rock Creek way to get there, which in some areas you still see the devastation from the huge wildfire from a few years ago.

On the way home we took the Penticton way. This was very beautiful but we should have left Greenwood sooner, it took a lot longer to get home than we thought it would. But it was still a nice drive. I forgot how beautiful Osoyoos is as we haven't been that way in a very long time. In the distance you can still see the mountains covered in snow, they are truly amazing as here it is mid- May the farm fields are dry and clear of the snow, not one inch of it is left on the ground. The farmers have their tractors out and the cattle are grazing. And yet, if you look behind the field and look at all the snow It looks like it hasn't come down at all. I just could not help taking a picture of this beautiful sight. There was no place to pull over so the picture was taken while we were driving at 100 kilometers. Nope, I wasn't driving Tim was, I thought I should clarify that hahaha. The town is nicely looked after, there were tons of people walking around or riding their bikes.

In Penticton we stopped at a pub called the Peacock Perch to have our dinner. The food and service were okay, but kind of expensive.

On our trip not only did we see all the snow on the mountains, but we also saw 5 White Tail Deer, all bouncing around or eating in a field, none on the side of the road this time (that was good to see.) A Golden Eagle was munching on some carrion on the road, expanding his large wings to fly away before vehicles could get too close to him and run him over (good thinking on his part.) We also saw about 6 or 7 Ospreys in their nests along the highway. Some Ducks and Seagulls too. There was an Ostrich farm that also had some beautiful Painted Horses there as well. Basking in the sun on the cement barrier on the highway was of course a Marmot, looking like he was enjoying the sunshine very much.

It was a great drive yesterday, we probably won't go for a drive again for awhile, but I am glad we did, seeing those beautiful mountains covered in snow while everything else was clear of it, was a good part of my day. The mountains in all their glory took my breath away.

Now we are back home and it's time to do some yard work.

FUTURE FIRE FIGHTERS?

The Sparks and Brownies would like to thank the Lumby Firehall for putting on such an amazing tour for us. We were able to watch them put on all of their gear, go in to every truck and learn about them, do a scavenger hunt, and even use the hose! We all had such an incredible time and I think we may have some future firefighters with us now!

Gluten-Free Doughnuts

Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator This is my last article. I’ve completed one novel and am working on two others. Writing is addictive! So I have decided to dedicate more time to writing historical fiction. As my final article, it seems appropriate to rerun a recipe many people requested and seemed to love.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease after a crisis where I lost 21 pounds in 20 days. All tests were negative until a stubborn internist doctor (a lovely Asian woman) refused to give up on me. If not correctly managed, usually with a gluten-free diet, Celiac Disease can make the body receptive to other conditions such as “celiac” rash (DH), anaemia, diabetes, osteopenia, and T cell lymphoma. For me, the diagnosis was a life changer. After two weeks on a strict GF diet, the weight loss halted. In a few months my chronic fatigue, skin problems, and constipation disappeared, and at last, an explanation for the sub-clinical anaemia that had dogged me most of my life. So far, I have avoided lymphatic cancer and type II diabetes that occurs so often in my family’s medical history.

While I don’t miss most of the things excluded from my diet, the smell of mini-donuts at fairs drove me near mad with longing. You may recall that I began experimenting with creating gluten-free doughnuts. Baked, not fried. I’m delighted with the resulting recipe. You don’t have to be Celiac to enjoy these delicious treats.

As with most GF baking, the magic begins with the right blend of flours: Basic Flour mix: • 2 cups white rice flour, 1 cup tapioca flour, 1 cup potato starch, 4 tsp xanthan gum. You can add 1 cup of Quinoa or Amaranth flour for a 5 cup flour mix.

• Preheat oven to 400F, and lightly grease doughnut pan(s).

Ingredients: • ¾ cup granulated sugar mixed with the grated zest of 1 lemon.

• ¾ cup of almond milk, stir in 1 ½ tsp of lemon juice (or use buttermilk).

• ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter.

• two large eggs.

• 1 tsp pure Watkins vanilla extract.

• 1¼ cups GF flour mix.

• ¼ cup GF cornstarch.

• 2 tsp GF baking powder.

• ½ tsp GF kosher salt ground fine Directions: • 1. Whisk sugar, milk, oil, eggs & vanilla in a large mixing bowl.

• 2. Sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt in another bowl. Add to liquids and whisk until you have a smooth, fluid batter.

• 3. Fill doughnut cups ¾ full. Bake 8-10 minutes until doughnuts spring back to the touch but are not browned. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan.

• 4. Tip out of the pan and coat while still warm.

Coatings: • Lemon: coat with ¾ cups granulated sugar to which finely grated zest of one lemon has been added. Chocolate glaze: 2 tbsp almond milk, 3 tbsp pure cocoa powder, 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (increase for thicker glaze). Vanilla glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar,

Cinnamon: 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter melted, mix together ½ cup sugar, ½ tsp ground cinnamon. Dip doughnuts in butter, then in the sugar-cinnamon mixture.

Lumby Junction

Last week I took a walk through the Community Garden just behind the OAP Hall. While I was there I ran into Linda Vlasveld watering her Tulips. We chatted for a bit, and Linda told me some interesting facts on her pretty Tulips.

As you know Holland is famous for their Tulips, in 1950 Hubertus (Bert) Vlasveld and his wife Maria left Holland to immigrate to Canada. When coming

The tracks crossed Whitevale Road and extended to Highway 6 (Vernon Street), crossing Miller Street to terminate at the MacGillis & Gibbs Pole yard (located in the vicinity of the Monashee

Mews today). It was Joseph Gallon (1892-1975) who won a contract to make 5,000 ties for Carling Brothers to build the railway from Vernon to Lumby. The ties were cut from Joseph's homestead on Mabel Lake Road. In the mid 1970's, the tracks to MacGillis & Gibbs were removed.

NOTICE TO ELECTORS OF AN ALTERNATIVE APPROVAL PROCESS VILLAGE OF LUMBY

The Corporation of the Village of Lumby Wastewater Treatment Facility Upgrades Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 844, 2020 Electors within the “Village of Lumby”, are advised of the Village of Lumby (Village) intention to adopt the Village of Lumby Wastewater Treatment Facility Upgrades Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 844, 2020.

The Village Council will have the authority to adopt Bylaw No. 844 unless at least 10% (percent) of the electors in the Village of Lumby sign and submit an Elector Response Form (ERF) opposing the adoption of the Village of Lumby Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 844, 2020 by Wednesday July 6, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. The number of Elector Responses required to prevent the Village of Lumby from proceeding, unless a vote (referendum) is held, is estimated to be 162. A report respecting the basis on which this determination was made is available on our website.

If adopted, Bylaw No. 844 will authorize the Village to borrow up to $2,901,696 to be repaid over a period not to exceed 25 (twenty-five) years to provide a portion of the funding required. $2,901,696 is Lumby’s contribution to the $10,880,000 project with $7,978,304 being funded by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) grant.

The borrowed funds would be used to construct the upgrades for the existing wastewater treatment plant (lagoon system). Improved wastewater treatment is required to bring the Village into compliance with the British Columbia Municipal Wastewater Regulation and to continue to meet the Federal Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations.

The project funds borrowed ($2,901,696) will be repaid through accumulated reserves.

A copy of Bylaw No. 844 and a proposal summary are available at the Village office located at 1775 Glencaird Street, Lumby, B.C., during each business day between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or online at www.lumby.ca. Municipal Office is closed daily between noon and 1:00 pm for lunch.

ERF’s must be submitted to the Village on forms that can be obtained during regular business hours from the Village Municipal Office located at 1775 Glencaird Street, Lumby, B.C., or downloaded from www.lumby.ca. The only ERF’s that will be accepted as valid are the ones provided by the Village or an accurate copy of the form.

The only persons entitled to sign the Elector Response Forms are qualified electors within the Village of Lumby to which this Alternative Approval Process applies.

There are two (2) types of electors: 1. A resident elector is an individual who is qualified to vote in a jurisdiction by virtue of living (residing) in the jurisdiction. Resident electors signing the elector response form must provide their name and address. To sign an Elector Response Form as a resident elector a person must: • • • • •

be 18 years of age or older; and be a Canadian citizen; and have lived in British Columbia for at least six months immediately prior to signing the Elector Response Form; and lives in the jurisdiction (Village of Lumby); and not be disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.

2. A non-resident property elector is an individual who does not live (does not reside) in the participating service area but is entitled to vote by virtue of owning real property in that jurisdiction. Non-resident property electors must provide their name and the address of the property in relation to which they are entitled to register as a non-resident property elector. Property owned in whole or in part by a corporation does not qualify under the non-resident property elector provisions. To sign an elector response form as a non resident property elector a person must: • • • • • •

not be entitled to register as a resident elector in the participating service area; and be 18 years of age or older; and be a Canadian citizen; and have lived in British Columbia for at least six months immediately prior to signing the Elector Response Form; and not be disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law; and owns property in the jurisdiction (Village of Lumby).

Be advised that only one non-resident property elector may sign an Elector Response Form per property, regardless of how many people own the property; and, that owner must have the written consent of a majority of the other property owner(s) to sign the response form on their behalf. Non-resident property elector consent forms are available at www.lumby.ca or contact info@lumby.ca to request a form be forwarded to you.

NOTE: There is no Corporate Vote – no corporation is entitled to be registered as an elector or have a representative registered as an elector and no corporation is entitled to vote.
