Drivers Reminded To Expect More Horses, Riders On Roads As warm weather draws more people outdoors, drivers in rural areas are reminded to stay vigilant and share the road with others, including horses and their riders.

Horses and their riders are recognized road users under the Motor Vehicle Act. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are expected to share the roadway and give appropriate space to horses.

Signs in rural areas alert drivers to use caution and be courteous when encountering and passing horses and riders. Drivers are advised to watch for these signs, especially at the start of any roadway or along narrow or winding rural roads. Even when signs are not present, people are reminded to share the road with all travellers to keep everyone safe.

Drivers are reminded to always expect a wide range of road users, and to keep everyone safe, drive accordingly, even when there are no signs.

Here are some tips for drivers encountering horses: • Slow down long before getting close to horses.

• Pass at a slower speed and give the horse and rider a wide berth (typically a one-car width).

• Brake and accelerate gently to avoid making extra noise or spraying gravel.

• Turn off stereos. Do not honk, yell or rev the engine.

• If travelling by bicycle, scooter or motorcycle, ride quietly and approach single file.

• If a horse appears agitated, wait for the rider to get it under control before passing.

Once past the horse and rider, accelerate gradually.

Horse riders should use caution when travelling on narrow roads or in times of low visibility, such as dusk or dawn. Riders are advised to wear reflective vests, and when possible, outfit horses with high-visibility leg bands.

Will Spring Arrive?

With exceptionally cool weather and everyone chomping at the bit to get their gardens planted there looks to be some encouraging weather in our near future! It’s been so disappointing to get up to see frost on the ground every morning and feeling a distinct chill throughout the day. Although for the long weekend temperatures climb to around normal it is supposed to be rainy. This has been one of the coolest springs in many years, almost record setting and has played havoc with gardeners everywhere in BC. There was a nice amount of people at the Lumby and District Market this last weekend although it was cool and cloudy.

At least we were spared torrential downpours and sleet like we had on the first market. With the cool weather and lack of sunshine I was told of some issues with fungal problems and although the client had done some research and determined that it was a fungal issue she was interested in finding out what measures she could take to solve the problem. I did recommend Cinnamon as it is a natural fungicide that I have used to stop and prevent fungal problems in my greenhouse.

Other fungicides that may help are baking soda, Neem Oil and Sulphur which all should be applied weekly and then reapplied after rain. Removal of leaves is also helpful be sure to burn them or dispose of them in the garbage. Watch for rust to appear first on the

lower leaves and then spread upward. Keep weeds removed from the area as this will help prevent the spread of this disease to other plant like Asters, Carnations, Geraniums, Irises, Lily’s, Pansy’s, Snapdragons, Sunflowers and Sweet Peas which can all become affected. Although it is not fatal to the plant the yellow or orange red spots are unsightly and will affect the overall vigour of the plant. When watering try not to water the leaves of the plant and be sure to do your watering early in the day. Air circulation to help prevent the onset and spread is important so try not to over plant and don’t plant against the side of buildings. You may have noticed higher prices at the grocery stores these days, but have you noticed items priced the same but with less food in the package? According to a story by Global News, food makers are known to shrink package sizes (or the amount of food in the package) to manage rising costs while keeping prices the same. Cranberry Benefits

Cranberries are not only considered a super food but are also native to us! They grow on around 58,000 acres of farmland across Canada, the northern United States and Chile. They are considered to be a superfood, because they offer a range of health benefits due to their high nutrient and antioxidant content. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals, sometimes called “free-radical scavengers.”

Historically, Native Americans used cranberries as a treatment for bladder and kidney diseases, while Early settlers from England used them to treat poor appetite, stomach complaints, blood disorders, and scurvy. More recently, cranberry research has linked the nutrients in cranberries to a lower risk of UTI’s (urinary tract infections) UTI’s start with the bacteria E. coli sticking to other bacteria in the urinary tract forming a layer or a biofilm allowing bacteria to grow and multiply and produce infection. Women are more prone to UTI’s than men, being 1 in every 3 women and men 1 in every 10. Repeat infections are likely especially in women. Cranberries have been touted as being beneficial for UTI prevention. Obviously, you should always seek your doctor’s advice. But here is the deal with cranberries.

Cranberries have a sort of a tag team affect against UTI’s. There is an active compound in them that does not get destroyed in the digestive system and they work to fight against bacteria. This compound is called xyloglucan oligosaccharides. There is also A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), molecules inside cranberries, and these interfere with the bacteria’s ability to stick to the bladder wall. Working in conjunction with one another they help fight against UTI’s.

Most people only know cranberries as a sauce accompanying a turkey at Christmas time or in the form of juice. The problem either not enough is getting consumed and or with most cranberry juices out there, is the sugar content in them. Sugar in itself, can

increase your risk of UTI’s. The same bacteria that the cranberry compounds are fighting against, love sugar, and allow them to multiply. So unfortunately, the benefits may cancel themselves out. There can me as much as 28 grams of sugar in one cup of cranberry juice blends out there, that is more than some soda pops! Then there are sugar free versions with artificial sweeteners. Sad to say these too can cause an imbalance in bacteria, reducing beneficial bacteria, possibly negating the benefits of the healthy compounds in the juice.

Dandelions And Stinging Nettle

Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Poor dandelion, it gets very little respect. The humble yellow plant’s root is one of the best-regarded tonics for the liver by increasing bile flow. Take dandelion root tincture in small doses (1-15 drops) in water, ginger ale or lemon-flavoured carbonated water. One of my personal favourite uses for dandelion root is in managing iron deficiency, the most common deficiency worldwide. You’ll need 14g each of dandelion root and yellow dock root, water and ½ cup of blackstrap molasses. Simmer the herbs in 4 cups of pure water, uncovered until reduced to one cup. Strain the liquid and compost the spent roots, then add ½ cup of blackstrap molasses, stirring until thoroughly blended. Cool to room temperature before refrigerating. It will last about 2 weeks in the fridge. Dose 1-2 tbsps once or twice daily, depending upon the severity of the anemia.

What Does “Hometown Pride” Mean?

The Monashee Arts Council is getting that question a lot lately. It is interesting how little the theme resonates. It seems the recent bout of flag waving is an anomaly. We are not patriotic in the same way as our neighbours to the south. Is it because so many of us relate to the larger rural setting or the bio region and not to the “town” or “village”? Or because so many of us have “come from away” rather than being born and raised here? Or is it that “pride” is not a very Canadian emotion?

We are encouraging creative souls of every age to consider entering this show, even if you don't think your work of art reflects the theme “Hometown Pride”. You could define “hometown” as anywhere

on earth or indeed in the galaxy.

After all, what would “Hometown Pride” mean to you ...if you were a visitor from Alpha Centari ?

Entries will be accepted up to May 30th . Entry forms are available at the Village Gallery. The show is open to all residents of Area D, E and the Village of Lumby. There is no charge.

Monashee 50+ Club Needs You!

The Old Age Pensions organization held a general meeting on Friday, May-13th. The turnout to this meeting was very disappointing, to say the least, as there were only 8 people there (4 of whom were on the executive).

These meeting dates have been the 2nd Friday of each month for the last 10+ years. We have a committee that makes phone calls to remind members of up coming meetings, but unfortunately that did not happen this month. Sorry folks. However, the committee did phone people for the April 2022 meeting and guess what – only 9 people (mostly executive) showed up.

We are aware that COVID-19 will influence some folks for get-togethers, but the restrictions have been relaxed throughout the country and Lumby seems to be okay with gatherings these days.

This organization has several events planned this summer and we are in need of volunteers. We currently have over 90 members, yet we have only seen

6 people come out to help – the same 6 people that help with Bingo, Cards, Markets, Meals, Entertainment. They also handle the organizing, setting up, and day to day operations. If you can help at Lumby Days, or Canada Day, please contact Cheryl at 778-473-7603 or Cindy at 250-306-6381 or Nancy at 250-558-7087 The OAP meetings have been retired for June, July and August but will resume in September. If meeting attendance does not improve at that time, the Lumby branch of the Old Age Pensioners will seriously look at dissolving. That would mean no more Bin- community groups and special occasions. go; no more Markets; no more Friday Nite Cards; The Lumby OAP Hall really needs the assistance of no more Meals; no more Pool; no more Christmas its members and our wonderful community to keep dinners or Sunday socials; no more hall rentals for going.

It is a respect for life in all its forms from the first tender blooms on the fruit trees that will become some of our favorite treats, the first gasping breaths of a new born lamb to the final harvest and all the moments in between and beyond that keeps the wheel turning.
