For the first time in 17 years, Rugby was back at the Oval. On Tuesday May, 3rd the Charles Bloom junior boys rugby 7’s team hosted their first home games. They had a tough loss against Fulton, but put another mark in the win column with a 17-7 victory over PVSS. Rugby 7’s is new to school sports.

Needing smaller rosters than traditional 15’s, rugby 7’s allows for smaller schools such as Charles Bloom to offer the sport to it’s student athletes. When given the choice, 16 enthusiastic grade 9 & 10 boys jumped on the opportunity to learn the game and re-start the tradition of Charles Bloom Rugby.

Passing on a firearm Dear Editor, Would you like to give a firearm to your son or daughter?

Don’t do it … without first calling the RCMP. Giving a gun to your child or grandchild will be illegal starting May 18 without getting permission from the RCMP. Even if you already own the firearm you want to gift.

Feel safer now?

For decades all that has been required to give, buy or sell a firearm was both parties had to have a firearm licence. That’s worked fine. There is no need to crack down on honest people.

The Trudeau Liberals say this new rule is to fight criminal violence.

They can’t be serious, because the Trudeau Liberals force the province to let violent criminals out of jail on their “catch and release” policies for gun crimes.

This is insane.

The police know that gangsters get their guns by smuggling. But the Liberals refuse to beef up border security. Or even keep violent criminals in jail.

A Much Cooler Spring

Our first Lumby and District Public Market was an interesting day to say the least. We had rain, hail, wind and thankfully intermittent sunshine. It was cold over all but it was so nice to see some of our regular clients and so wonderful to meet so many new arrivals to our area and from so many different places.

I know everyone is ready to start putting in their garden. However this has been one of the coolest springs I can remember and last year many people lost their plants to frost just around this time. Supposedly this is the 4th cooler spring on record and even I lost a few plants to frost in my greenhouse and this has never happened so I am advising people to hold off putting sensitive plants outside at this time. The night time temperatures are on the cool side and Friday it is only forecast to be 2 degrees and that will mean frost in many parts of this area. Saturday looks like a pleasantly warm day and the evening temperatures are much better but I will still be wearing my thermal underwear to the market.

The traditional planting time for this area is the long weekend in May but there are several plants that you can start or transplant at this time of year. Spinach, Kale, Lettuce and Peas are all cool weather crops and can be started now or transplanted from plugs. I would not put Tomatoes, Squash plants and definitely not cucumber outside now, all these types of bedding

plants on my table at the market were unhappy by the short period of time they were outside and they are hardened off. Seeds such as Carrots, Beets and other root crops should be okay now especially if you can put row covers over them as the sensitive roots could be harmed if you live in an area where there is still a chance of frost.

Your yard may have more protection than some others depending on where you live and other factors which you may be aware of. Beans should not be planted yet as they require a soil temperature of 60 degrees otherwise the seed may just rot in the ground, I have not even started them in my greenhouse. Trees, Shrubs and other perennial plants are well planted at this time of the year when heat stress and the usual spring rains will be of benefit. It’s nice to see more leaves on the trees and so many blossoms on some of the fruit trees and the beautiful blossoms of the Tulip and Daffodil. Grape vines still look as if they did not survive the winter but I know that they still need some time to show some life.

Many of the usual garden pests have not been so evident thus far due this cooler weather other than the lovely young lady that works for me being stung in the face by a wasp. I will be diligently watching for them now as they are one of my most feared and disliked pests even though in the spring they tend to stick to a

Caution Your Loved Ones About The “Hang-Up Delay” Scam

A phone scam that uses landlines has been making the rounds in BC. Here’s what you need to know about the “hang-up delay” scam so you can protect you and your loved ones from getting duped.

How the “hang-up delay” scam works The scammer calls you on your landline to tell you that your money is at risk and pretends to be your bank, a police officer, or someone of authority. To convince you further, they ask you to call another credible institution (such as a bank or the police) to re-affirm the charges. The scammer makes you believe you are speaking to multiple people and making more than one call to verify the information, but in fact, you’ve only

been connected to the scammer the whole time.

This scam only works on landlines and here’s why.

What many people don’t know is that because the scammer initiated the call on your landline and they’ve secretly remained on the line, you (unknowingly) cannot end the call. This is because the person who initiates a call on a landline has to end the call for the other person to be able to dial out again (this is how landline systems work). This means that the initiator of a phone call (on a landline) has to hang up in order for the receiver of the phone call to be able to use their phone.

Some call it the "Ant Plant" because it does attract Ants to the plant. It also attracts the Bees and the Hummingbirds, downside, it also attracts aggressive Wasps. The Chinese Peony, what a large beautiful flower. Planting it near shade is helpful as they don't like to be in the sun for longer than 4 hours.

Although they can tolerate full sun, it will shorten the Chinese Peonies' already too short lifespan. Their short lifespan is only about 7- 14 days with shade, without it they may only last a few days. There are some of the other types of Peonies that do well in full sun, but the Chinese Peony will do better with well drained soil and some shade.

You may find that your Peony's are on the slower side of growing, as it takes about 3 years or so before it is mature enough to have blooms. But just think that once it starts to bloom, how beautiful it will be, and if taken good care of the Chinese Peony can bloom every year for about 100 years or more, they will be around long enough for your great grandchildren to admire as well. The wonderful scents that can come from the Peony will thrill your nose. The smell can range from a woodsy smell to a very sweet smell. They will bloom from late spring to about early summer, planting them in the Fall. As a cut flower they are outstanding with the other flowers

in the vase. They are not a good flower for your rock gardens.

Deadheading is advisable with the Chinese Peony, as soon as they start to fade.

In Chinese Culture The Chinese Peony stands for Wealth and Prosperity, Love, Honor,Happiness, Romance and of course Beauty.

Barb is survived by her husband Merv, they would have been married 64 years this year; their four children, Joyce, Terry, Peggy and Bruce; her grandchildren Alicia, Tyra, Keith and Keyvn; and her great-grandchildren Jayden and Taya. She will be laid to rest at the Lumby cemetery with a service on Friday May 13th, 2022 at 10am. Until we meet again, we love you. Purple Deadnettle

Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator They’re hard to miss in downtown Lumby, masses of plants with purple flowers and leaves that look similar to mint. It’s an aggressive grower that will pop up wherever it can. Named because of its resemblance to stinging nettle (without the bite), deadnettle is a member of the mint family. While I haven’t noticed patches of its often confused for cousin henbit, I’m sure it too will soon be flowering in Lumby. If you’re thinking of getting rid of your patch of deadnettle, move quickly. It's a wily plant that goes to seed long before you’ve got the mower out. Small groups can be pulled up by hand. Don’t leave any fragments on or in the ground…they’ll quickly re-establish.

Although considered a pesky weed by some, deadnettle is an important food source for pollinators in early spring and very attractive to bees and I’m told both henbit and deadnettle are beloved by chickens and ducks.. Deadnettle leaves can be eaten in salads (henbit is tastier), soups, blended into smoothies or made into tea. With anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties deadnettle is also herbal medicine. Look-alike henbit is also edible. Both deadnettle and henbit are useful emergency plants, deadnettle salve can be used topically on minor cuts and bruises. As with any wild herb, be sure you know what plant you’ve harvested* before ingesting, and never ingest deadnettle if you’re pregnant.

RDNO Breaks Ground on New Facility for Vernon Search and Rescue Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) members, the Chair of the RDNO Board and other significant contributors, gathered at the site where the new Search and Rescue facility will be built to celebrate the start of construction.

“We are overjoyed to be at this milestone and cannot wait for this new purpose-built facility to be completed. The new building will enable us to quickly respond when required, properly store our specialized equipment, and provide critical training for our members,” said Mark Forsyth, Director and Search Manager with Vernon Search and Rescue.

Over the years, the VSAR’s membership has grown along with the amount of equipment it uses to undertake different types of rescue missions. The RDNO owns the facility and facilitated an expansion in 2004, but a second expansion was found to not be possible due to the environmental sensitivities in the surrounding wetlands. Without the option to expand the existing facility, the RDNO and VSAR decided that a new building was required.

In 2018, the public approved the borrowing of $3.5 million through an Alternative Approval Process.

Since then, the RDNO and VSAR have worked hard to secure a location, determine facility needs, and ultimately get the project to the construction phase.

“The RDNO appreciates the invaluable service that Vernon Search and Rescue provides to the entire North Okanagan. The new facility will better accommodate their growing membership, and we look forward to getting together again to cut the ribbon when it’s complete!” said Kevin Acton, Chair of the RDNO Board.

The new building will be located at 5150 Silver Star Road. Crews are expected to mobilize to the site shortly and complete the building in 2023.
