The Dog'O'Pogo Agility Club held a trials over the weekend at the ball diamond. Agility is a timed obstacle course for dogs. There are many interesting obstacles through which the dog must maneuver; a dash into the tunnel, along the raised dog walk, through the tire, onto the pause table for a 5 second count, up and over the A-frame, carefully along the tilting teeter, over the jumps, through the chute and in and out through the weave poles and across the finish line. However, it isn’t as easy as all that! For one, each course is different and each day brings it’s own challenges.

Just for Fun Funny Tales

The Lost Senior Citizen When I went to lunch today, I noticed an old man sitting on a park bench sobbing his eyes out. I stopped and asked him what was wrong.

He told me, 'I have a 22 year old wife at home.

She rubs my back every morning and then gets up and makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground coffee.' I continued, 'Well, then why are you crying?' He added, 'She makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favourite biscuits, cleans the house and then watches sports TV with me for the rest of the afternoon.' I said, 'Well, why are you crying?' He said, 'For dinner she makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favourite dessert and then we cuddle until the small hours.' I inquired, 'Well then, why in the world would you be crying? He replied, 'I can't remember where I live.'

Married Men Only Apparently in a small town somewhere in the Okanagan Valley there is a large sawmill that will only recruit married men. One of the local women, we will call her Brenda, a feisty young lady, was angry about this and demanded to speak to the manager to find out why.

Brenda demanded to know, 'Why is it you limit your employees to married men? Is it because you think women are weak, dumb, cantankerous.......or what?'

'Not at all, Ma'am,' the Factory Manager replied.

'It is because our employees are used to obeying orders, are accustomed to being shoved around, know how to keep their mouths shut and don't pout when I yell at them.'

RDNO Encourages Businesses to Reduce Food Waste The RDNO is encouraging food businesses to ReTHINK and keep food waste out of the garbage with changes to regulations around disposal of large food quantities at RDNO Diversion and Disposal Facilities.

Beginning July 1, 2022, RDNO Municipal Solid Waste Management Bylaw No. 2832, 2019 will be amended to include “Commercial Food Waste” to its list of Regulated Materials. Loads containing Regulated Materials can be assessed a higher disposal fee than general refuse. This is intended to encourage businesses to prevent food waste, distribute or donate surplus food, and compost remaining food scraps. The first six months that this bylaw amendment comes into effect will be an education and implementation period. Enforcement is planned to commence starting January 1, 2023, and will focus on those loads found to contain primarily food waste from large grocers and food processors. After the first year (July 1, 2023), further enforcement to other sectors of the food service industry will be considered.

ultimate goal is to have all businesses keep food waste out of the garbage. The RDNO offers guides and resources to help businesses implement a food waste diversion that works for them. Some key suggestions for businesses to prioritize are: • Prevent food waste and reduce the cost of collection service.

• Donate safe and healthy food through food recovery organizations.

• Compost separated food scraps.

“More than half of all food produced in Canada is wasted” stated Jim Schubert, Environmental Services Manager with the RDNO. “If all food wasted in the world was produced by a single country, it would be the third largest carbon emitter, after China and the USA. When edible food is wasted, all resources from producing that food (including water, land cleared, fertilizer, labour and fuel) are also wasted. Wasting food is also expensive. Retail food stores and food service in B.C. lose an estimated $1.3 billion worth of food per year. This is 57% more than the estimated profit in those sectors”.

Many organizations in the North Okanagan are already leading the way with successful programs to divert food waste from the garbage. Retail food stores and business can play a critical role in supporting the sustainability of the North Okanagan. Resources including comprehensive and condensed guides developed from industry tested ideas and solutions, and food donation guidelines can be found at www.rdno. ca/commercial-food-waste.

The RDNO ReTHINK Waste Project Grant Program provides funding to support innovative, collaborative and community oriented projects that prevent waste. Initiatives that involve distribution of surplus food and community composting are encouraged.

I’m Sure Going to Miss Him!

Container Gardening

I’m sure that by now everyone has heard the news that our Premier Horgan has been banned from going to Russia. This I’m sure is devastating news to him as I’m sure like the rest of us that this was the number one destination this year. Putin sure knows how to hurt a guy. I am so amazed at the tenacity of the Ukrainian people and I pray they get the supplies needed to endure and survive this unimaginable atrocity. If there was not enough woes in the world this monster has played his deadly hand.

Evening temperatures are finally climbing and within a month it will be time to plant the garden. But if you don’t have a yard to plant a garden there are many ways to make your balcony or windowsill beautiful and productive. Container gardening is just perfect for those who still wish to plant whether you have a sunny spot or shade. I’ve heard that more plants are sold now for use in containers than for beds and borders. Even with a yard you can utilize more area and enhance more space by the use of containers. There is less weeding, less water used and no digging involved so it actually simplifies the gardening chores. You also can display your plants better and you are more able to control pests.

However you must make up for the lack of compost that can be used in the form of fertilizers but with the ever widening variety of organics available that is easily overcome. Even perennials can be grown in containers but must be over wintered in the house. I have 4 large tree like plants that crowd my house over the winter but it is well worth it when they are put out in the yard for the summer. I usually jump the gun on these and have some major damage to overcome to bring them back to the beauties that they can be. This year I’m going to wait until mid to late May to ease the transition from an indoor plant to outdoors.

Herbs are an easy container plant and can be grown in hanging basket arrangements or window box type planters or in individual pots. You can easily put all your favourites in a relatively small container and using them as they grow will keep them healthy and contained.

Tomatoes are a wonderful plant in a container and it is amazing the amount of tomatoes you can produce with the right plant. Cucumber too is great, trail it up along a trellis or use netting to trail it up a wall. You can also grow onions, lettuce, radish and some short rooted carrots, zucchini and egg plant too. I always grow potatoes in bags easy to care for and easy to harvest.

Strawberry baskets are a given but with a medium sized container you can grow other berries as well, they now even have dwarf stock in apple and cherry trees that can be grown in relatively small containers. Beans as well can be grown and trellised to run up along a wall or net that can be also used to divide up an area.

Now lets talk about flowers! There is no end to the flowers that can be planted in a container whether hanging or standing. Try a combination of bulbs and bedding plants, the combination is stunning. The advantage with containers is that if it is too sunny and hot you can move them to an area that is more suitable or provide another plant to give them some shade. Almost all flowers can be grown in pots including roses but roses need to be towed in for the winter and you can do this leaving them in the pot you grow them in and just bury the pot up to the exposed graft then top with leaves.

As for containers there is no end to the variety that is available and the cost can be minimal or outrageous depending on your taste. As the container will not be able to be seen once the plant is established and growing you can use anything that will hold dirt and the plant.

You can get quite creative and plant in containers such as old teapots, that soup tureen that never gets used, wicker baskets, old pots, fish tanks that leak and won’t hold fish, Drawers from an old dresser can be stacked to make a planting tower just stack them at an angle to the one below it so each corner can be planted. This is where you can get creative even before you start planting.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM As happens every year, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) wants to hear from YOU! The T-4 slips are coming in the mail. T-4’s will be issued to all persons who received “CERB”, “CESB”, “CRB”, “CRCB” or “CRSB” benefits in 2021. Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is up and running again this year. Beth and Marilyn will be starting the program on Tuesday, March 1st as follows: All locations and times are at the OAP Hall (under the red roof) at 1765 Glencaird Street.

You bring in your information, the volunteers complete and file the return and you come back and pick up the paperwork. It’s that easy!

The deadline for filing is Friday, April 30, 2022.

After that date, there are late filing charges assessed and if there are monies owing, interest charges may be applied. If you do not file your return, the GST, Child Tax Benefits (if applicable), and the Guarantee Income Supplement may be interrupted/discontinued as well as other benefits you may have.

When Was The Last Time You Were Here?

Tim and I went to Kelowna yesterday,and thought we would stop for breakfast. We went to the IHOP. We haven't been there for well over 25 years. I got to tell you, it was a great breakfast! But it was very busy, so busy in fact we waited over 35 minutes before our breakfasts came.

One thing I found annoying about it was how loud it was. There were so many people in there, having their meal, and with everyone talking at once it was hard to hear what each of us were saying to each other.

Ah well, it was still a great breakfast.

Did you know that IHOP started way back in 1958 in Los Angeles California? From 1958-1973 they were known as the International House Of Pancakes.

A marketing company came up with the acronym of IHOP, by 1976 it was such a hit that the acronym stayed.

They really are international, serving food from the USA, Canada, Middle East Countries, South America, Japan, and other places as well.

Although the name states Pancakes.

There are so many other things on their menu. Chickpeas As Superfood?

Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator It’s true, chickpeas are recognized by the United Nations as a bona fide superfood. So it must be useful beyond hummus. In fact, they are healthy, delicious and their nutty taste blends well with many aromatics, vegetables, grains , salads and pasta. Chickpeas are also environmentally friendly because they can fix their own nitrogen from the atmosphere. That leaves a store of nutrients in the soil for later crops to consume.

As a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fibre, chickpeas have a number of health benefits such as aiding weight management, supporting digestion, and are an excellent food for folks who don’t eat meat or animal products.

• Weight management: combined with its low calorie density, the protein and fibre in chickpeas may keep you feeling full and reduce your appetite.

• Type 2 diabetes: they have a low glycemic index, a marker of how rapidly your blood sugar rises after eating a food, making them a good choice for folks with type 2 diabetes. Chickpeas are a good source of magnesium and B vitamins found to reduce the risk of developing T2D. • High blood pressure: a great source of magnesium and potassium, which may support heart health by helping prevent HBP.

• Iron deficiency: they’re an excellent source of iron, approximately 26% of Daily Value in just 1 cup.

Chickpeas are affordable and easy to add to your diet.

Here’s a much loved recipe for roasted chickpeas. You’ll need 2 X 14-15oz cans of chickpeas AKA garbanzo beans. And 2 tbsps EVO or coconut oil.

1. Drain and rinse chickpeas. Remove super loose skins off beans.

2. Spread beans and dry on a paper towel or tea towel. (about ½ hour) 3. Preheat oven to 400°.

4. Line cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper 5. Evenly spread beans on cookie sheet.

6. Bake 40-60 minutes. Check at 40 minutes, they should be crunchy, if not return to oven.

7. After baking, quickly transfer to a bowl and mix with the 2 TBSP EVO or coconut oil.

8. Add seasonings of whatever flavour you are using to the bowl and mix well.

9. If you’re using the honey cinnamon flavour, after coating, put the beans back into the oven for 5 minutes or less to carmalize them.

10. With the ranch recipe, mix 2-3 tsp of the whole mix into your baked chickpeas and refrigerate the rest for use in other recipes.*

Seasonings • Honey Cinnamon: 1 tsp ground cinnamon; 1 Tbsp granulated sugar; 2 Tbsp local honey.

• Garlic: 1-2 tsp garlic powder or 2 cloves fresh minced; ¼ tsp fresh cracked pepper; ½ tsp sea salt.

• BBQ: 2 tsp paprika; 1 tsp cumin; 1 tsp chili powder; 1 tsp onion powder; 1 tsp garlic powder; 1 tsp salt; 3 tsp brown sugar • Ranch: ¼ cup black pepper; 1 ½ cup parsley flakes; ½ cup kosher salt; ¼ cup granulated garlic; ¾ cup granulated onion; 2 Tbsp dill weed.* • Sesame Seed: 1 tsp sesame oil; 1 tsp garlic powder; ½ tsp sea salt 1 Tbsp sesame seeds.

Text Message Refund: It's A Scam

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are warning the public not to fall for a text-message scam that's circulating in the community.

The scam is initiated when the victim receives a text message indicating they are eligible for a refund or rebate.

The message contains a clickable link the person must follow in order to deposit and claim their money. The link redirects the victim to a phony website that prompts them to enter personal and/or banking information. On the other end of the page is actually the fraudster who now has full access to the victim’s personal or financial

information, which can have devastating consequences.

Never click on an unsolicited text message offering money, states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. Again, this is a good reminder that ICBC, BC Hydro, utility companies, Revenue Canada, and any legitimate business or government agency will not issue any rebates via text messages.

In order to protect themselves, police are warning residents to be suspicious of any unsolicited emails or text messages.

Protect Yourself • Never click on a text message offering a refund, rebate or free money; • Avoid providing sensitive email through email or text; • Notify your financial institution immediately if you sense anything fraudulent about a transaction; • If you’ve shared banking information with a scammer, contact your financial institution to place alerts on your accounts; • If you've shared personal information, contact Equifax and Trans Union to place fraud alerts on your account.

These links aren’t going to lead to money, they’re only going to lead to trouble, adds Terleski.

As with any scam, if you have not provided personal information or lost any money, you do not need to contact the police. Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre.ca or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

Watershed Restoration Creates A Healthier Future For B.C. An ongoing effort to restore watersheds and wetlands in the province is creating a healthier future for British Columbians by mitigating the impacts of climate change on communities, strengthening ecosystems and securing quality drinking water.

Premier John Horgan highlighted the Budget 2022 commitment of $30 million to continue to improve B.C.’s watersheds.

“Healthy watersheds and wetlands are critical for climate adaptation,” Premier Horgan said. “They serve as a protective buffer for communities against flooding, droughts and wildfires. This new funding will help safeguard B.C.’s watersheds and wetlands for generations to come, while continuing to create good, local jobs for people throughout the province.”

Over the past few decades, B.C.’s diverse ecosystems have been impacted by human activity, and the $30 million in grants will help: • restore and maintain ecosystem services and watershed health; • support climate resiliency;

• support local organizations in meeting their mandates; and • maintain and create jobs.

Half of the funding ($15 million) will be provided to Watersheds BC through the MakeWay Foundation to co-ordinate watershed restoration projects led or co-led

by First Nations. The remaining $15 million will go to six organizations to support watershed restoration work throughout the province. They are BC Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Living Lakes Canada, Redd Fish Restoration Society, Farmland Advantage (Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC),and the Rivershed Society of BC. The new restoration projects will also support reconciliation with First Nations communities and partnerships across levels of government and non-governmental organizations.

“A priority for my ministry is ensuring that water and watersheds are respected and valued, in part through the development of a Watershed Security Strategy and Watershed Security Fund,” said Josie Osborne, Minister

of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship. “The work that’s already being completed on wetland and watershed restoration is producing positive results and environmental benefits that will last for years to come.”

This funding builds on the success of the Healthy Watersheds Initiative (HWI), a government-funded program under the StrongerBC economic plan. The Province partnered with the Real Estate Foundation of BC (REFBC) and Watersheds BC to administer $27 million in grants to non-profit groups, First Nations and local governments working on a variety of projects to conserve and restore watersheds and wetlands throughout the province.

In advance of this announcement, Osborne met with Cowichan Tribes Chief Lydia Hwitsum for a tour of watershed restoration work, both completed and underway.

They visited two projects: a water sustainability plan for the Xwulqw’selu Sto’lo (Koksilah River) to benefit fish and water users, as well as sediment removal and habitat rehabilitation for the Koksilah and Cowichan rivers, an integral part of its five-year river management plan.
