Thousands of B.C. Families Benefit from Expansion of

$10 a Day ChildCareBC

Thousands of families are seeing dramatic savings on the cost of child care with 84 more $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites available throughout the province.

"We believe child care should be a core service that families can count on when they need it, at a price they can afford," said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care. "We've heard from families that receiving $10 a Day child care is life changing. That's why, as part of our ChildCareBC plan, we've committed to making low-cost child care a reality for families."

Under Budget 2021, the Province committed to expanding the number of $10 a Day spaces in B.C. by converting 3,750 licensed child care spaces into lowcost spaces for families. The B.C. government has now surpassed this goal by creating 4,015 $10 a Day spaces for families in communities throughout B.C. One of the $10 a Day ChildCareBC providers is Dorothy Lam Children's Centre in Vancouver. The centre is now providing $10 a Day child care for as many as 142 families at a maximum of $200 a month per child.

"This was fantastic news to share. I'm so pleased for families and especially for mothers who now have more choice and flexibility to continue with their careers," said Bernice Scholten, CEO, Vancouver Society of Children's Centres, which includes Dorothy Lam Children's Centre. "I see these reduced child care fees as the start of significant change for the child care sector overall, bringing all families one step closer to quality, affordable and accessible child care."

Leah Zielinski, a parent receiving $10 a Day child care, said: "We went out for a celebratory dinner after learning we would be receiving $10 a Day child care at Dorothy Lam. It is a huge win for my family.

We are now paying $200 a month for full-time child care for my four-year-old daughter instead of $1,200 a month. This is such a relief for so many families, especially after a few years of the pandemic, and it's an even bigger deal for families who have more than one child in in full-time child care."

This expansion more than doubles the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces available for families, from 2,500 when the program began in 2018 to more than 6,500 spaces. By partnering with the Government of Canada through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces will nearly double again to 12,500 by December 2022.

In addition to the $10 a Day sites, tens of thousands of parents are saving as much as $1,600 a month per child, through other child care investments such as the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative and the Affordable Child Care Benefit. In partnership with the federal government, the average rate of child care will be reduced by 50% from 2019 levels for children five and younger by the end of this year.

Funding through this partnership allowed the Province to convert approximately 2,500 licensed child care spaces, with a priority on infant and toddler care, into low-cost spaces at existing child care facilities.

The initial spaces converted to $10 a Day were called prototypes because their goal was to help the Province understand the best way to provide funding to child care operators in the long term, reduce fees for parents and ensure that child care professionals are well compensated.

Now referred to as $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites for the expansion, through provincial funding, 84 child care sites in B.C. have signed agreements with the Province to become $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites.

All licensed child care providers were eligible and invited to apply for this latest $10 a Day ChildCareBC expansion in summer and fall of 2021. Priority was given to: • non-profit/public organizations; • Indigenous-led providers; • child care based in municipal/community centres; • child care on school grounds; • home-based child care; and • child care in locations where $10 a Day providers are not already available.

What Sound Does A Wasp Make When It Hits Your Windshield?... Bee Flat!!!!

What an amazing array of weather we’ve had this past week. I can’t remember having so much wind and Saturday it dared to try and snow. The last few evenings have been quite chilly and the cool mornings leading to the warm afternoons have me dressing in layers. The Lumby and District Public Market will opening on May 8, just in time for Mother’s Day and I will my plants in the Monashee Co-op a few days before that! I will include a price list in the Lumby Valley Times as well so you can phone and come out to the greenhouse to shop for your garden plants., In Plenty of time for the traditional long weekend planting date. Many pests are now out and I actually found and killed my first Yellow Jacket Wasp. I’m pretty sure that this was not a Queen but a worker wasp and it’s not working anymore!

Yellow Jackets are a predatory social wasp and one of the most menacing insects known to mankind. Unlike other wasps or hornets they are the most aggressive, they can bite and sting and can do this multiple times as their stinger does not break off their body after they use it. On top of that they will attack unprovoked and may leave a chemical behind that will mark you out as a threat, summoning other Yellow Jackets to attack. Only female Yellow Jackets have stingers which are located on their abdomens and they are very defensive of their nests.

the Queen to over winter in a sheltered spot where in spring she will awaken, create a small nest and lay a starter group of workers. They will hatch and create a larger nest so the Queen can do her job of creating more workers and the workers will take care of the offspring by gathering the necessities of life. In spring and early summer this consists of gathering protein in the form of mosquito, caterpillar, and other garden pests. In late summer and fall this turns to a more sugar based diet and this is where the problems start. This is when picnics, barbecues and other social festivities become a magnet for their attention any meats or sweets become a open invitation to them. To give yourself a fighting chance at a enjoyable out of door event there are a few things you can do prevent unfortunate and painful stings or bites.

Hopefully they will not be too big an issue this year.

Many of our beautiful birds are back now and I have the same crazy Robin fighting at all his reflections of course the mirrors on the truck are his favourite. Soon the Humming Birds will be back and the Grouse Beak as well. Ah, Spring in all its glory!

As mentioned this website provides searches for deeper family lineage as well templates that are easy to fill

and print to safe keep for your own family history.

Take some time with younger generations and bring up some family history to share and chart together.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM As happens every year, Canada Revenue Contact Whitevalley Community Resource Agency (CRA) wants to hear from YOU! The T-4 slips are coming in the mail. T-4’s will be issued to all persons who received “CERB”, “CESB”, “CRB”, “CRCB” or “CRSB” benefits in 2021.

Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is up and running again this year. Beth and Marilyn will be starting the program on Tuesday, March 1st as follows: All locations and times are at the OAP Hall (under the red roof) at 1765 Glencaird Street.

Easter Eggs!

If the Easter bunny only brings chocolate eggs, be sure to eat your regular eggs too, don’t just colour them. Eggs, are highly nutritious and one of the best protein sources out there! They contain all essential and nonessential amino acids that our body requires.

Amino acids build proteins, which are the main building blocks of our body. There are 21 amino acids and 9 are essential, meaning they cannot be produced by our body and have to be obtained from our diet.

A high-quality protein source, contains the correct amounts and ratios of these amino acids. Egg’s win!

When looking at other proteins, the biological value or measure of quality, is often evaluated by comparing it to eggs, which are given the perfect score of 100.

Sometimes it is still thought, because eggs carry cholesterol, that if you have high cholesterol, you should avoid them. But now luckily, we know that is not the case, as the small amount of bad “LDL” in them has little to no affect on your levels. The even better news is, that they can actually help increase your healthy “HDL”!

They are a rich source of iron and choline. Choline is a vital nutrient for healthy neurological function, nerve function, and control of our muscles.

They carry the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, that are very important for our eye health. Lutein fights macular degeneration and zeaxanthin protects our eyes of harmful effects of UV light. They both can reduce the risk of developing cataracts. So, it’s not only the Easter Bunnies love of carrots, that can improve our eyes!

They carry a variety of vitamins crucial to our me-

tabolism and health.

1. Vitamin D - needed by the body to absorb dietary calcium, which we know is vital for bone health along with promoting healthy teeth and muscles.

2. Selenium - an anti-inflammatory nutrient vital for cardiovascular health – deficiency has been linked to cardiovascular disease and cardiac arrest. 1 egg carries ¼ of our daily requirement 3. Zinc - a trace mineral that plays a crucial role in the body's immune system 4. B Vitamins- maintain energy levels, as they assist in the healthy metabolism of carbohydrates into energy. a. They also play a vital role in producing neurotransmitters, which carry messages in the brain and regulate mood. i. B2 and B3, are found in the whites, while B5 and B12, are almost entirely contained within the yolk They contain healthy and essential fatty acids, MUFA & PUFA’s. Yes, they do have saturated fat too, but only 1/3 is saturated. The rest are heart healthy Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) – omega 9 and essential Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) – omega 3 & 6, which also contribute to a healthy brain and nervous system.

Standoff Ends Safely With Arrest RCMP intervention brought about the safe conclusion to a standoff involving an armed and barricaded subject near Lumby on Sunday.

On Sunday, April 10th, 2022, at 8 a.m., the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP was called to assist with a situation involving a man in mental health crisis threatening to harm himself. The responding frontline officers were led to a rural property near Bobby Burns Road where the man, believed to be armed with a firearm, had barricaded himself inside a building. Officers established a containment area and additional, specialized RCMP resources were called to the scene to assist.

The Southeast District Emergency Response Team, along with a Critical Incident Commander, and an RCMP Police Dog Service Team were deployed, states Constable Chris Terleski,

Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. Police continued attempts to call out the man so he could safely be arrested. After several hours, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the man exited a building and members of the Emergency Response Team, with the assistance of an RCMP Police Dog Services, safely took the man into custody.

To ensure the safety of the public, our response necessitated restricting access to the area and we want to thank the public for their patience and co-operation as we worked to safely resolve this situation.

The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to a hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

The Monashee Community Forest has answered the call of the Lumby & District Health Services Society!

The society is needing to replace the imaging (X-ray) equipment and software at a cost of $160,000 and is fundraising for this effort. The Monashee Community Forest has committed to provide $5,000 in funding each year for the next 5 years for a total of $25,000!
