If you have lived in the Lumby area for a few years, you may remember the thrills and excitement of the Lawn Tractor Races that used to be held every year where the Monashee Mews now stand. Have you been waiting for their return?

Well... wait no longer!

With some enthusiastic help and support from a few locals racers, volunteers and businesses, the races will be back for 2022!

The races will be held in the field surrounded by the new section Salmon Trail near the western entrance to Lumby. Two temporary tracks will be built in the field with four classes of races available. Super Stock (ages 10 to 13), Modified class (ages 14 and up) and Super Modified class (ages 16 and up) and the Open Class (Just bring what you have and race it.) With a full set of racing rules, as well as rules for each class of tractor, anyone can become a lawn tractor racer!

Don't have a racing tractor yet but want to enter? Don't worry, there is still time to get ready. The first Qualifying Races will be held on May 28 & 29, 2022 and the Preliminary Races to be held on June 4 & 5, 2022. Although not officially associated with Lumby Days, the Finals will be held on the same weekend (June 10, 11 & 12, 2022). Come on out and support this fun family event!

ICBC Relief Rebate Coming For Drivers VICTORIA - The Province is announcing that B.C.'s public auto insurer will provide a one-time relief rebate of $110 to customers to ease the financial burden of increased gas prices caused by the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.

This rebate will total more than $395 million and comes at time when the global increase in gas prices and other cost pressures have affected day-to-day life for British Columbians.

"People are facing increased costs through no fault of their own, but as a chain reaction that started with Putin's illegal war in Ukraine," said Premier John Horgan. "As a result of our work to fix ICBC, we're in a position to put money back in people's pockets to help a little with these increased costs."

Most ICBC customers with a basic auto insurance policy during the month of February will be eligible for the $110 relief rebate. Most commercial customers will receive a rebate of $165 because they generally incur higher expenses.

ICBC is in a position to provide the relief rebate as a result of its forecast annual net income of $1.9 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022. The remaining income will be reinvested into ICBC's capital reserves to ensure rates remain affordable for the long term.

"This rebate is going to help a lot of people in this province," said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public

Safety and Solicitor General. "This is another opportunity to put money back in the pockets of the hardworking people who make this province a great place to live."

Eligible ICBC customers can expect to receive their rebate in May if they are registered for direct deposit with ICBC or as a refund to their credit card. All other customers will receive cheques in June.

The relief rebate follows two COVID-19 rebates issued by ICBC last year, which provided drivers with a combined average of $300. ICBC's COVID-19 rebates were made possible because crash rates fell during the early part of the pandemic when British Columbians were driving less. Enhanced Care refunds were provided to eligible customers after the launch of the new insurance model on May 1, 2021.

As of Dec. 31, 2021, most customers renewing their full-coverage personal auto insurance under Enhanced Care have had annual average savings of $490, or 28% per policy renewal, compared to the previous model.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM

As happens every year, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) wants to hear from YOU! The T-4 slips are coming in the mail. T-4’s will be issued to all persons who received “CERB”, “CESB”, “CRB”, “CRCB” or “CRSB” benefits in 2021. Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is up and running again this year. Beth and Marilyn will be starting the program on Tuesday, March 1st as follows: All locations and times are at the OAP Hall (under the red roof) at 1765 Glencaird Street.

a person with a disability, or know someone who is, the CVITP is a program where volunteers will complete and file your income tax return for FREE. You bring in your information, the volunteers complete and file the return and you come back and pick up the paperwork. It’s that easy!

The deadline for filing is Friday, April 30, 2022. After that date, there are late filing charges assessed and if there are monies owing, interest charges may be applied. If you do not file your return, the GST, Child Tax Benefits (if applicable), and the Guarantee Income Supplement may be interrupted/discontinued as well as other benefits you may have.

How Does A New Gardener Learn To Garden?... By Trowel And Error!!!

Almost all signs of snow have disappeared from my yard and daily more signs of life are appearing. Lilies are up a few inches and the garlic is up through it’s mulching of leaves. Most trees and hedges are in bud, grape vines are just about the last to show life every year and true to form no signs of life are apparent yet. More yard clean up can be started but be careful as some plants like Lambs Ear grows on last years growth and some small plants can be easily be mistaken for weeds and knocking the head off a Lilly will prevent it from blooming and with other plants kill it. Sunshine has been a little lacking this past week but the temperatures are pleasantly warm and even the nighttime temperatures are above freezing. Very few pests are out except for flies and a few smaller moths but they will arrive soon enough and if you have seedlings growing in your greenhouse or on your windowsill get be sure to keep are sharp eye on the plant leaves particularly the undersides for aphids and spider mites or their eggs and be prepared to mix a small amount of soap and a litre of water in a spray bottle to mount your attack. Most flower, herb and vegetable plants should be started by now, Brassards like cabbage, Cauliflower and Broccoli should be started this week and seeds of Cucumber, Squash, Zuc-

Heart Rate and Health

A really good glimpse into your health is to give your heart a check. Knowing your heart rate is an easy basic step in giving yourself a health check.

Colleen’s Corner

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Reminiscing

Okay, I know it;s just the beginning of Spring, but summer is right around the corner! So, here is a picture of one of my many, many, favorite summer scenes. I had taken it a couple of years ago in Parksville BC. It wasn't summer yet as it was in late March but this beach scene made it feel that way. It was still cool enough to wear my jacket, but hey, I got to wear my sunglasses! You know my expression by now: "It's always a good day when you can wear your sunglasses."

It was a good trip out there. You probably can't tell from this photo, but people were way out in what should have been water. The tide went out so far that you would be over your head in water when the tide was in, but yet they were way out there. Tim and I took a walk out there ourselves, it was fantastic. While we were out there we found a lot of Sanddollars, we didn't bring any home as the motel we stayed at had strict rules about taking the Sand Dollars away, plus they would not make the trip back here and they would die. But they were still pretty cool!

When the tide came in, you could see the Seals bobbing in the water. All you could see was their heads.

When we went for a drive later, we saw a lot of Seals laying on the rocks getting warm in the sun. There

must have been at least 40 of the Seals basking in the sun, just in one area and 40 more on the next set of rocks so of course I took quite a few pictures.

Funny, I used to live on the island some time ago, I don't remember seeing any Seals. Maybe I did, but because I was living there it was probably something I was used to and it became a part of everyday life.

Friends and I would go clam digging, and looking for oysters. One of my friends had found a beautiful Pearl in an oyster and gave it to his mom for her birthday, she was ecstatic about this great find. She had a really nice ring made out of it.

Although the weather was good while we were there on our trip, coming back was pretty scary. On the highway the snow was coming down really fast and hard. Visibility was next to none. It was very treacherous, but we made it back safely.

Of course on the island there are a variety of different animals and things that we don't have here, sometimes while taking the ferry to cross over if you are lucky enough you might spot a Whale or two. What a beautiful sight this is. Some of the birds are not what we have here, and of course as well as plants and flowers because we have different zones.

I would like to see as many as I can, I have started a bucket list of all the places in Canada I would like to see, sure there are great places all over the world, but I just want to see Canada. At this time I don't want to travel outside of Canada, at least anywhere here our dollar is actually worth a dollar!

But wherever I go, you know I'm going to take a trillion pictures, some of them you will see. Hopefully everywhere I go the weather will be nice enough that I can wear my sunglasses, because then of course it will always be a Good Day!

The Stars hosted the valleys and opened the tournament with a 7-7 tie with Salmon Arm 4. Scorers for the game were Zachary Young, Tye Krause, Linden Catt, Ryder Quibell were all 1+1, Jack Laventure added 1 goal. Faith Seehaver sniped the tying goal from the point with just over 6 minutes left in the third period. Tori Maltman picked up one assist while James Wraight and Tyra Cunningham shared the net roles.

Stars sadly lost one of their forwards Grady Krause to a broken hand and was out for the rest of the weekend.

The Stars second game was against Lillooet and they were victorious over them with a 11-0 win. Linden Catt had a hat-trick, Ryder Quibell two goals, Jace Catt 1+2, Tori Maltman 1+1, Colton Young one goal while Zachary Young was 2+2 for the morning. Riley Dewhirst picked up 2 assists and Jack Laventure 1 assist. Tyra Cunningham earned the win in net. Stars lost a defense player Faith Seehaver to a sprained ankle for the weekend.

The Stars being down by two players due to injuries, still won their third game against Princeton 4-3.

Linden Catt, Jace Catt and Ryder Quibell each had 1 goal, Tye Krause 1+1. James Wraight had the win in net. Outstanding defensive play by Mia Maltman and back checking from Ben Gillick.

Stars were off to the semi-finals Monday morning placing 2nd and facing off against a very strong and well coached Princeton team.

Princeton was up by two when Tye Krause with a pass from Linden Catt scored for the Stars on a power play in the second to bring the game within one. Princeton answered back at the beginning of the third and were up 3-1. Coach Cole Young pulled the goalie with 2:25 left in the 3rd!. Zach Young scored at 1:09 from a pass by Ryder Quibell to bring the stars within one.

Then 11 seconds later Tye Krause had a pass from

Linden Catt to tie the game and sent the Stars and Princeton into overtime. Overtime is a 4 on 4 format for 5 minutes. There was 21 seconds left when Jack Laventure sniped a bullet pass their amazing goalie and the Stars won 4-3 in overtime. Tyra Cunningham was outstanding in net, making save after save.

STARS are going to the finals against Kelowna.

Lumby Stars met Kelowna 5 in the finals Monday afternoon with a packed house at Pat Duke Memorial Arena. Kelowna opened the scoring in the first and the Stars answered back with 2 goals by Linden Catt assisted by Colton Young and Tye Krause, Jace Catt set up Ryder Quibell to end the 1st. Second period scoring by Tori Maltman with a sweet pass from Ryder Quibell put the Stars up by two. Zachary Young sniped a goal with a pass from his brother Colton Young and Tori Maltman. Stars leading 4-1 at the start of the third. Kelowna came out strong in the third with 2 quick goals and brought them within one. Linden Catt got his second of the game to put the Stars up by 2 again!! Kelowna scored again a minute and 40 seconds later to bring them within one again.

Score is now 5 for the Stars and 4 for Kelowna with 9 minutes left in the game. Jack Laventure and Tori Maltman set up Zachary Young to put the Stars up by 2, there was no turning back for the Stars. Tye Krause set Ryder Quibell for a sweet goal and then Ryder Quibell returned the favor and set up Tye Krause.

The Stars scored 6 powerplay goals in the game and won 8-4. James Wraight stood on his head and earned a win between the pipes.

be cooked to deactivate its famous sting and must not be eaten after the plant has flowered or gone to seed.

Nettle can be grown from seed, cuttings or root divisions made in the autumn. The young shoots are an excellent vegetable, and you can cut the plant back three or four times a season to bring on new growth.

Its therapeutic uses are legion: • Extracts of the root are useful for symptoms of prostate enlargement, such as decreased urinary flow, nighttime urination and retained urine. Compounds in stinging nettle are anti-inflammatory and may help stop the growth of the prostate. Some blends combine the root with saw palmetto berries.

• The leaves are full of nutrients that contribute to healthy bones, teeth and hair. Nettle has about 2900 mg of easily absorbed calcium to each 100 g of the dried leaf. It’s also high in magnesium.

• Nettle is an important herb for women, a daily infusion of nettle helps improve iron levels and can be used during pregnancy. Used during pregnancy it can help improve energy, strengthen the blood vessels, reduce varicose veins calm leg cramps, prevent anemia and decrease the likelihood of hemorrhage during childbirth1. The same infusion supports healthy menstruation. Regular use can decrease menstrual cramping, probably due to its magnesium content.

• Seasonal allergies? It’s not too late to start drinking nettle tea to reduce symptoms. For best results start a month before the allergy season is in full swing.

Freeze dried nettle leaf capsules are also good for the management of hay fever.

• Thomas Culpepper knew well the rash caused when the tiny hairs of fresh nettle brush the bare skin.

He used it to good purpose in what is called urtication, the deliberate stinging of the skin to reduce musculoskeletal pain. I tried this myself in Europe when suffering from joint pain caused by arthritis.

It worked, but the area tingled (not unpleasantly) for about a week.

• Osteoarthritis, extracts of stinging nettle leaf have shown good results in decreasing pain. The leaves and seeds are used as a diuretic.

• Some folks are very allergic to nettles, and must avoid the plant. Other possible side effects include possible upset stomach, and rash. If you take med-

icines for diabetes, BPH, high blood pressure, anxiety or insomnia consult your care provider before starting stinging nettle treatments.

Here’s a recipe that sounds so good, I can’t wait for the first nettles to appear: Nettle Soup • 1 tbsp EVO, plus a bit for drizzling • 1 onion chopped • 1 carrot, diced, • 1 leek, washed and finely sliced • 1 large starchy potato, thinly sliced • 1 L vegetable stock • 400 g young stinging nettle leaves • 50 g butter, diced • 50 ml heavy cream Directions 1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Add onion, carrot, leek and potato.

2. Cook 10 minutes until veggies start to soften.

3. Add stock and cook 10-15 minutes until potato is soft.

4. Add nettle leaves, simmer for 1 minute to wilt, blend the soup.

5. Season to taste, stir in butter and cream. Serve drizzled with extra oil.

New Homestay Website Launches To Help Newcomers Find Temporary Homes New immigrants moving to the North Okanagan from around the world for permanent work through the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot now have access to a new website to obtain accommodation while they settle into the community.

The North Okanagan Cultural Homestay Program has been created through an innovative partnership between Happipad and Community Futures North Okanagan and Social Planning Council for the North Okanagan with support from the Local Immigration Partnership Council and the Vernon & District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS).

Funding to promote this portal for homeowners and newcomers to connect is through the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior and the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. The site is available at https://happipad.com/rnip/ Homeowners with extra room in their home can join the platform to connect with newcomers through this or other Happipad home share programs. A simple application form will get homeowners connected with an intake professional who will help match homes to people seeking accommodation.

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) is a pilot of the Federal Government designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities by creating a path to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers and their families. RNIP immigrants have been offered full-time permanent employment in our community in a variety of occupations.

Executive Director, Leigha Horsfield of Community Futures North Okanagan one of the website partners, and manager of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, says “This website addresses a growing need for employers who are attracting new talent to our communities. Housing is a significant part of the addressing our growing labour force needs.”

Horsfield adds, “Our pilot area includes Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby and Lake Country and we encourage homeowners throughout the region to consider offering extra space in their homes through this program to help newcomers get acquainted and settle more quickly.”

This new North Okanagan online platform, created by Happipad can enrol as many homeowners as want to participate. A variety of home options will be needed for individual, couples, and families. Ideally homes should offer a shared or separate kitchen area and bathroom as well as a private bedroom.

Annette Sharkey, Executive Director of SPCNO, says, “Local homeowners can have a positive experience sharing their home with someone from another culture while playing a significant role helping newcomers adapt and feel welcome in their new community. We feel excited that if many homeowners sign up, this North Okanagan homestay program may be expanded beyond this pilot group.”

The program offers an added benefit to newcomers as Philipp Gruner, Interim Executive Director of VDICSS explains: “Newcomers are often at a disadvantage when looking for housing on arrival to Canada as they do not have an established tenancy record here. This collaboration is beneficial to both newcomers and their hosts: it gives local residents an opportunity to open up their homes and participate in cultural exchange while helping immigrants gain first rental references in Canada.”

Homeowners set their own price working with Happipad which also manages the monthly rent transactions between the two parties. As a home-sharing option, the rental tenancy laws do not apply; however, both homeowners and homestay guests will sign an agreement through Happipad.

Cailan Libby, CEO of Happipad says, “Our team welcomes the opportunity to provide the Happipad

platform in partnership with RNIP because we know it can create a more positive welcoming experience for newcomers in the North Okanagan. This type of collaboration has the potential to be expanded to other regions and especially where there are housing supply pressures for immigrants.”

In the past, artists have used their self-portraits as a kind of business card: “here I am and this is the quality you can expect”. This was important to artists who relied on the patronage of the rich and titled. The modern selfie often shows the things we are interested in, our passions or our fears; what we had for dinner. This approach can illustrate our world view as well as our emotional being.

Come into the Village Gallery and reacquaint yourself with the wonderful faces of our Community in this collection of Realism, semi-realistic and abstract works of all media and artists of all ages.

Call for Artists “Farm and Field” “Being a farmer means shaking hands with nature”Unknown With April coming up quickly and many farmers and ranchers in our area already tending to new calves and lambs, the Monashee Arts Council couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate those who help put food on our tables as they work tirelessly tending the land.

Theirs is a job that does not end when they clock out of the office, from repairing the broken fence, checking on expectant mothers in the middle of frigid January nights and drying a new born calf, to sowing seeds in the fields after a long sleepy winter, cutting and baling the hay in the heat of our Okanagan summers. It is a life that begins before the sun rises and well until after it has set.

It is a respect for life in all its forms from the first tender blooms on the fruit trees that will become some of our favorite treats, the first gasping breaths of a new born lamb to the final harvest and all the moments in between and beyond that keeps the wheel turning.
